Q: Where is the Stewardship at Guardian Angels Update? A: It will return after the SayHey5K on June 25!

The French – like our community’s founder, Fr. Augustin Ravoux – must have an expression for the awkward feeling of being known primarily by some association. Not by name or accomplishment, but through some relative: “Hey, your So-and-so’s brother, aren’t you?” Or known simply through some institution.Fr. For other requests, please contact the office.Communion for the Homebound...When we come together to pray at our Eucharistic liturgy, we do not forget the members of our community who are unable to be with us because of ill health. We remember them in our prayer, and we wish to include them in our Holy Communion. Members of our community bring the Blessed Sacrament to them to comfort them and to unite them with us in the Eucharist. We are not always aware of those who have this need. Please call the Parish Office to let us know if you or a member of your family would like to have Holy Communion brought to them. Jesus says “Follow Me” (Matthew 9:9). It’s not always easy to do. Our journey in life can be filled with obstacles and bumps in the road and can lead us to have doubt in God. Where is

God when we are facing challenges, hurts and disappointments? Where is He when there seems to be no one to turn to or when we are sinking into depression or becoming addicted to unhealthy habits? Where is He in times of loss and the in the daily trials of life? God is always there. God is constant. If we place our trust and faith in God we will come out stronger on the other side of these trials and disappointments. He promises “Come to Me, all who are weary and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). How comforting to know that God loves us and wants us to be happy. He knows our dreams and desires. “Delight yourself in the LORD and He will give you the desires of your heart” (Psalm 37:4). Jesus is always standing ready with His hand outstretched waiting to take your hand in His and to walk with you on your journey of life. We can’t always see God because of our blindness so “We walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7).

How Spiritual Doubt Can Make Our Faith Stronger

by Francis Wagner, O.S.B.Part IV (Conclusion) (Continued from last week’s bulletin):

Enduring doubt with the apostles and saints: Remaining steadfast is the key. The apostles and saints were human beings just like us, which means they doubted like us. Ultimately, what makes a saint is the commitment to grow in faith and do God’s will in the face of spiritual doubt and contradiction. In relatively recent history, the lives of St. Therese of Lisieux (1873 – 1987) and Blessed Mother Teresa (1910 – 1997) stand out.

In the final months of her short life as a cloistered Carmelite nun in France, Therese suffered terrible mental unrest that questioned the existence of God, heaven, and eternal life. Yet, she persevered. Mother Teresa is beloved for her compassion and care for the people in the slums of Calcutta. Yet she carried a heavy spiritual burden. In a prayer shared with her spiritual director, she says: “I call, I cling, I want, and there is no one to answer. No one on whom I can cling. No one, Alone. The darkness is so dark, and I am alone. Unwanted, forsaken. . . I have no faith.”

Neither of these holy women had lost their faith. On the contrary, their lives of self-giving demonstrated the paradox of true love. Immersed in doubt, they had become Christ, who cried out from the cross, “My God, my God, why have you

forsaken me?” Joined to Christ’s redeeming act, they discovered total trust in “the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things unseen,” and in the process became lights for other seekers.

Examining doubt through the life of the Church. God’s Word to us in Scripture and in the life and witness of the apostles and saints is a stead-fast source of this light for those struggling with spiritual doubt. Another is the life of the Church. It nourishes, illumines, and strengthens us.

Here are a few essentials for our faith journey:

• Surrender your doubt to the sacraments, particularly the Eucharist. Acknowledge your inability to understand fully, and profit from the unseen but immeasurable grace the sacraments provide. Ask the Holy Spirit to grant you the gifts of understanding and wisdom.

• Do some homework. Review the Scripture readings before Mass. Reflect afterward on what you have heard and how it applies to your journey of faith. If you have questions, take the initiative and do some research. The best place to start is the Catechism of the Catholic Church. A solid Catholic Bible commentary is also a good investment.

• Meet regularly with a qualified spiritual director. Spiritual direction is a time-honored, invaluable, no-cost tool in engaging your spiritual doubt. Going on a retreat is also a good idea.

• Above all, pray always, and keep it simple. Use Scripture as a jumping-off point. Implore God, “I believe, help my unbelief !” or, “Lord, increase my faith!”

Take heart. These are the ways Christ presents himself to the faithful, to the doubtful. As with the apostle Thomas after the resurrection (John 20: 24-29), Jesus is able to pass through the doors of doubt and offer peace in a world of contradiction. “Reach out your hand and put it in my side,” he invites us. Thomas sees Jesus, reaches out to him through his doubt, and then believes. For us the promise is much greater, as Jesus said: “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe.”

! We have not seen, and we come to believe. Not in an instant, and not without doubt, but over a lifetime, clinging to that “loose plank bobbing over the void.” The risk of being lost reveals the reward of being found, for “what no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the human heart conceived, what God has prepared for those who love him” (Cor. 2:9)

" This mystery beyond knowledge enfolds us just as surely as the welcoming arms of a mother around children who once were lost but now are found.

In just a few short weeks, I will be starting my time as your pastor. It is generally viewed to be good pastoral practice to not change things during a pastor’s first year. I fully agree with this idea, but there are always some practical issues that require adjustments.I will be arriving at Guardian Angels

during a transition to a new leadership structure – one that will encourage a greater level of parishioner participation and responsibility. This is a good thing, and I am adjusting the daily Mass schedule to encourage parish leadership to gather at Mass prior to the start of Thursday meeting night. My day off pattern will also be different than Fr. Paul’s, consequently, the days of Word/Communion services will also change. The new daily Mass schedule, effective June 30, will be as follows:Monday, Friday, and Saturday will have an 8:00 a.m. morning Mass.Thursday morning Mass will be at 8:00 a.m. during the summer, 9:20 a.m. during the school year.Thursday will have an additional 5:30 p.m. Mass.Tuesday and Wednesday will have an 8:00 a.m. Word and Communion service.Wednesday Mass will be celebrated in the afternoon off-site at places such as the local nursing home. As the dust settles, I am hoping to schedule some sort of regular Wednesday afternoon Mass, but this decision will be delayed until its logistics are better understood. Should such a Mass be scheduled, occasionally it would be canceled on my days away, or if it conflicted with a funeral.I understand that change can cause tension, especially when they seemingly come arbitrarily “out of the blue.” I am announcing this adjustment now so that those who wish to attend weekday Mass will have a bit of time to prepare for this change. Additional opportunities to attend Mass will become available on Monday and Saturday mornings as well as Thursday afternoon, but the Tuesday and Wednesday morning Masses will be replaced by Word and Communion services. The weekend Mass and Confession schedule will remain unchanged.I am looking forward to becoming your pastor and I hope this revised daily Mass schedule will be beneficial to our community. I will be officially celebrating my first Mass at Guardian Angels on Thursday, June 30, at 5:30 pm. A BBQ will follow Mass - we hope you can join us! I am slow learning names – come get a head start! ~ Fr. Doug Ebert

As they reveal what they know, I nod my head. And smile. It’s a well-practiced habit.I’ll be frank. This being known by association reminds me of how I went through high school as “Mark’s younger brother” or “Anne’s older brother.”To be honest, it’s been good for me as a continuing lesson in humility. A lesson started several years back with my mentor, friend and former rectorymate – Fr. Bob Cassidy, former pastor of Our Lady of Grace, and now of happy memory. In my first year of priesthood, during a time when I think I was particularly full of myself for some minor parish project I’d overseen, Fr. Cassidy sat me down and set me straight. “Let me give you some advice that’ll keep you sane, Paul,” he matter-of-factly intoned. “No matter where you’re assigned, or how well regarded you might become someday, you WILL be largely forgotten by parishioners within five years of reassignment or retirement. No doubt about it.”I countered that he was still very much well-known and respected from his last assignment. To which he deadpanned, “It hasn’t been five years yet.”Being assigned to a super-engaged parish like Guardian Angels is especially humbling as I ponder my re-assignment on July 1, at St. Joseph’s in Rosemount. Over the next week or so, Guardian Angels parishioners are no doubt going to say pleasant and polite things about my pastoral experience at G.A. There will be very nice cards given me. A tribute or two. But truth be told …… each and every one of them will know, not so deep down, that their parish’s incredible growth, welcoming hospitality, ministry success and collaborative spirit are really parishioners’ accomplishments. Not any pastor’s.The new parishioner leadership structure will in fact be tapping into this spirit, and guide this parish and school community. Fr. Doug Ebert – very familiar with this structure at All Saints in Lakeville – tells me that he is very eager to work with this new structure. As the years go by, and the parish grows from 1,000 to 1,500 households, veteran G.A. parishioners will remember me as “You know, that guy who came before Fr. Doug Ebert … that bald guy … um, Fr. Bill.”And in Archdiocesan gatherings, I’ll hear “You’re that priest who used to be at GUARDIAN ANGELS! What are they up to now?”Which is the way it really should be.Not just because it is true. Not just because it keeps a priest humble – someone who doesn’t have a wife or kids to straighten him out. Not just because it prevents the blurring of the line between a pastors’ and a parish’s identity (a surefire recipe for emotional confusion). As Fr. Cassidy understood, it simply keeps the focus on who a parish is about, and always has been about:God. And parishioners. There’s no telling how far God and parishioners will go when there’s no parish or pastor identity crisis.~ “Fr. Doug Ebert’s predecessor” (Fr. Paul Jarvis, 26th pastor of Guardian Angels, one of the fastest growing parishes in the Archdiocese)

The Finance Council met Thursday, May 19thThe Next Finance Council meeting is scheduled for Thursday, June 16thTopics:

Trending/Tracking/Projections; Alumni Records, School Enrollment, CollectionsAudits; internal mini-audits will be conducted monthly for checks and balances. With staff/priest transition, we will hire outside firm to conduct audit. This is standard practice with parish pastor changes.Right Sizing/Balanced Budget; In the spirit of prudent operations management, we have a balanced budget. To accomplish this, it was recommended and approved to bring spending inline with contributions/revenues. As such, we identified key areas of opportunity and recommended staff reductions at the school. These reductions are based entirely on seniority and were based on significant research to ensure maintaining quality teacher/student ratios (said another way, based on enrollment, we were operating at higher than standard/optimal staffing levels). New Members; We welcomed 4 new members to the council (Thomas, Joseph, Martha and Stephanie). If you have interest in Finance Council, please contact [email protected]; We discussed SayHey5K (separate bank account, event June 25. The event is a mechanism to invite friends, family, neighbors, co-workers to engage in your community and your church), Top 10 List (refined and will be published shortly), Transitions (Jerry Roth will be moving on July 1, in addition our Accounting role will be modified), New Priest (Fr. Doug will be officially transitioned July 1st), Send Off (Fr. Paul’s send off Mass will be June 18th), Spring Fling (final numbers make this year’s Spring Fling the most successful [financially] ever), AngelFest (The Ken and Laurie Forner family is chairing the event. Look for changes/enhancements soon), Money Asks (the council was provided a calendar of main giving asks during the year, we will revisit parishioner feedback to determine if we need to modify frequency of money asks)YOUR church, YOUR finance council.
