FROM FR.JOE On this Father's Day, let us draw close to Saint Joseph, the Patron

Saint of Fathers, as we pray: Glorious Saint Joseph, spouse of the immaculate Virgin, obtain for me a pure,

humble, charitable mind, and perfect resignation to the divine Will. Be my guide, my father, and my model

through life that I may merit to die as you did in the arms of Jesus and Mary. Amen.

Each year we celebrate at this time the Feast of Corpus Christi, the Feast of the Body and Blood of

Christ. Jesus clearly teaches, as recorded in John 6, it truly is his body and blood that he gives us when we receive Holy

Communion. But what does this mean for you and me? Why would he do something so radical and even strange sounding to

people of our culture?

First, it is no accident that he gives us himself under the form of Bread and Wine. These were staple foods of his

time. Bread properly made is so rich that one can practically live on it. This is not the case with rice or potatoes. When Jesus

calls himself the bread of life, he is saying he can meet all our spiritual needs just as bread for so many, basically did the

same for peoples bodily needs. Wine was also a staple food. Many of the benefits of a glass of wine are known to us. In

Scripture, in one of the psalms it is written: God gave Man wine to cheer his heart. And so Jesus gives himself under the

form of wine to remind us that he is the one who truly gives us joy.

Although what we receive in Holy Communion continues to have the properties of bread and wine, our faith

teaches us that the underlying substance is the body and blood, soul and divinity of Jesus. Why would Jesus do this, change

the underlying substance into his being through the prayers of consecration of the priest? It is a great mystery. But one

answer would be that he is trying to communicate that he is sharing his divinity with us through Holy Communion. He is

sharing his life with us, he is inviting us into his inner circle of friends. He has us eat not at the table for servants, but at his

family table, with his Father and Holy Spirit.

I suppose he could have just given himself to us spiritually, or symbolically. But Jesus never does things half way.

He wanted to give his entire self. In a similar manner he didn't have to suffer so overwhelmingly on the cross. The smallest

suffering would have sufficed to make up for all our sins because of his great dignity, his being the Second Person of the

Most Holy Trinity. But to better demonstrate his love, he chose to suffer in the most grievous form known to man in his

time. God the Son "desperately" desires to communicate the love of the Father and his love for us. So he died on the Cross

and left us with a Sacrament in which we receive his whole person. Let us approach Holy Communion understanding what a

great gift he gives us. And let us live according to the divine dignity that he strengthens within us each time we receive Holy

Communion in the state of grace. Fr. Joe

Parish Directory Time

2018 brings the Roman Catholic Diocese of Green Bay’s

Sesquicentennial (150th Anniversary), and a perfect time

for a Parish Directory to commemorate the occasion.

Cathedral & St. John’s will be doing so as well. You will

receive a free 8 x 10 of your portrait, a free copy of the

finished directory, and the ability to order additional

portraits. It is a wonderful opportunity to have your family

portrait or Christmas card photographs taken. Although

each parish will have their own directory committee,

parish members can have their portraits taken at either

parish’s photography sessions. We are looking for a team

of people to work with our organizers for each parish

(Mike Parins for St. Johns and Mary Fisher for the

Cathedral.) Please consider joining our current volunteers,

as we need:

Two coordinators from each parish.

Two layout volunteers with computer skills (per parish)

Sign-up volunteers.

Host/hostesses for check-in on picture days.

Follow-up phone callers.

Many hands make light work. What a great chance to get

to know your fellow parishioners! We hope you can join

us to create this wonderful directory. Please call Cathedral

office to share your time. 432-4348.

LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA 15 Things to Do in the Midst of Suffering

Suffering is a mystery we all face at some time

in our lives. Whether it is physical, emotional,

or spiritual, it will test our faith. Internationally

known speaker Jeff Cavins shares personal

insights he gained through his own physical

pain. He shows us how we can join our sufferings with

those of Jesus on the cross, bringing renewed meaning to

the suffering we experience in our lives.

Anima Christi Soul of Christ, sanctify me. Body of Christ, save me.

Blood of Christ, inebriate me. Water from the side of

Christ, wash me. Passion of Christ, strengthen me. O

good Jesus, hear me. Within thy wounds hide me.

Suffer me not to be separated from thee. From the

malicious enemy defend me. In the hour of my death

call me and bid me come unto thee That with thy

saints I may praise thee forever and ever. Amen
