Let me say first of all what a privilege it is to be standing here right now giving the valedictorian speech for the grad class of 2014.
There are some things in life that provide a perfect analogy for certain other things. And for me, what came to mind was white water rafting. Each year the grad rafting trip is held, and I feel like it holds a significance. The whole end of high school grad trip. Funny, that when you think about it, that something so simple can represent something so large.
I can guarantee that none of us could have imagined exactly how our high school expe-rience would be like. We started out scared and timid, trying to seem like the confident young people we are today. We had our elementary school cliques. Oyama, Davidson, and Peter Greer. Just like before going rafting you start off at the docks, all excited, nervous, not knowing what to expect, that was us. But slowly we started to expand our friend-ships. Now, you can’t even tell who came from which school. Of course there are the Pursuits and the people who came to high school along the way, who didn’t necessar-ily come from one of the three elementary schools. They all jumped onto our little boat, joined our small family. As we moved up in high school, we were slowly doled out decisions. Grade 8 was the huge choice of band or no. Grade 9 gave us more electives. Grade 10 even more so. Grade 11 was a year where we looked at the grade 12s trying to imagine what it would be like sitting where they were a year ago. And here we are. Grade 12. Graduation. But graduation hasn’t been the only milestone that we have reached. Getting our drivers licenses. That was huge!!!! Not having to wait for the bus, or call our parents. Being able to go to Tim Horton’s or Subway at lunch was like the greatest feeling ever. Then there was the fact that we were comfortable enough with ourselves to show up to school in sweats, no makeup. We also
had to decide what to do with ourselves after high school. The big question. What’s next?
Coming to high school, we had no idea what would be in store for us. We had no idea that Mrs. Middleton owned the hall-ways. We didn’t know that Mr. Penner could light tables on fire. The fear of not being able to open our lockers on the first day. Even as grade 12s funny enough, we still sometimes can’t. You’d think that being able to open our lockers is a graduation requirement. We had no idea of some of the amazing memories that we would make in the next five years. And just like rafting, you all get onto the same boat, perhaps not knowing each other that well. But believe me when I say, by the end, you almost feel like family. We all travelled through the same rapids and waves together, but each had their own experience and what they took out of it, whether that was a great memory, a good laugh, or even sometimes something we learned.
And there were so many great times. Mrs. Morin and the wall sits she made us do if we were being loud or not focused. Almost everyone had really toned legs by the end of that year, particularly Bryce and Colton. Mr. Penner and his nature walks. Everyone remembers and misses those. Even as grade 12s we try to pressure our teachers into let-ting us have nature walks but it doesn’t work anymore. Mr Geier giving some of us girls bonus marks to work with those annoying boys. Band trips of course. Forgetting to set the alarm and waking up 5 minutes before the bus leaves. We laugh about it now, but it was not funny at the time. Or that feeling when we would all play a song, knowing that we were all in harmony, and marveling at the amazing feeling that can give each of us. Knowing that 32 other people are in perfect sync with you, knowing that you had conquered that song you had been practicing over and over again. And finally, it would just click.
We all learned together, laughed, cried sometimes, but stayed strong through thick and thin.
Mr. Andrejew made certain that we knew the date of Canada’s confederation (July 1st 1867). He also made sure we knew that Montreal is not the capital of Quebec, Quebec City is. Who knew? That was not me by the way, and in defense of that person, it’s hard to give a right answer when you have a meter stick being pointed at you. Mr. Wellwood always made a point of insulting every persons favorite car. Mrs. Ramsey taught us stoichiometry, solubility and how to laugh at ourselves when we had done something silly, like spilling chemicals all over our partners lab book on the first lab of the year. Mr. Frehlick and his sarcastic comments, that he reserved for no particular person. Mr. Mackenzie taught us all about calculus, physics. I remember him always saying, if you don’t like the way it looks, just change it. And of course, it really comes in handy in calculus, but when you look at it in a broader scope, it can apply in so many different ways. If you’re not happy with something. Change it. Whatever that may be. Your job, your grades, anything.
And so many, many other teachers and the lessons they taught us, that weren’t always in the curriculum, that I may not have mentioned but will always be engrained in our memories. and we thank them for that.
Just like in white water rafting, some peo-ple are absolutely terrified to set out on the journey, while others are just itching to get started. We had no idea what kind of rapids would be hitting us, what would be around the bend, what types of rocks or other such obstacles we would have to dodge. Our life-jackets were our family, friends, and teachers. There were so many turns and twists, some unexpected, others you could tell they were coming. You never knew what would be

coming around the bend. And sometimes there would be a fork in the river, and you would have to choose which way to go, not knowing what either held in store for you. But like everything, going white water rafting is an opportunity, just like high school. However, some cannot wait to get off while others will miss it.
Some of the rapids that came our way steered our course for us. Others we would go against the grain to get to where we are today. There were a myriad obstacles. For each of us, they represent our very own unique story. But all the way throughout we were given support , from whomever that may have been. Everyday aspiring doctors, engineers, lawyers, and nurses walk these hallways. Artists, design-ers, musicians, writers, electricians, mechanics, athletes, teachers, you name it. We are now free to choose what we want to do next. Each is a different path, down a different river.
Dear grads, please follow your dreams and passions. Believe in yourselves, persist, persevere, and do what you want to do.
Graduation has crept up upon on us, and whether we know it or not, we ARE ready to set out on the next stretch of our journeys. Look around you and remember this moment, and especially the people you are surrounded by. We have grown up together and some of us will be parting ways at the end of this month, while others will keep in touch all throughout their lifetimes. We have all made everlasting friendships, even if they remain only in our memories from now on.
But either way, we’re here. We’ve made it. Congrats to the class of 2014, you’ve earned it! It’s smooth sailing for now. Until the next bend. Thank you all.
