PromptingsWhat will we pass on to our children and grandchildren? More to the point: what will we intentionally bequeath to them? I’ve got something more than estate planning in mind. I’m thinking about life orientation, that around which we center the living of our lives. What kind of life orientation might we hand on to those who come after us?
The core answer for a Christian goes something like this: “I hope and intend to pass on to my children and grandchildren a God-centered approach to living life.”
Doing so is not easy. Many things compete to function as the center of our lives, and quite a few of the competitors are attractive. They include work, play, hobbies, and relationships. Some of the competitors are evil: addiction to work or play, racism in any form or to any degree, sexism in all its variety, religious bigotry, tribalism, and the like.
Try asking yourself a question: “What might an impartial outsider observer conclude is the functional center of my life?” If the answer is anything other than God-centeredness, perhaps it’s time to slow down, think, pray, and reorder your life. Do it, not only for your sake, but for the sake of those who will come after you.
