The institute said it had suc-cessfully tested the vaccine inhumans, but that more testingwould be required in areaswhere the parasite is mostcommon, mainly in Africa andSouth America.

The freshwater parasite canpenetrate people's skin, andchildren are at especially highrisk because they swim andbathe in contaminated water.

Brazil has some 2.5 millioncases of schistosomiasis, which initially causes an itchyrash, followed in subsequentweeks by fever, chills, cough-ing and muscle aches. After afew years, the disease candamage internal organs.

"While the mortality rate islow, schistosomiasis causes in-capacity, which makes it a dis-ease that is caused by povertyand one that perpetuatespoverty," Araujo-Jorge said.

BRASILIA (AFP) - Brazilianresearchers say they have suc-cessfully tested a vaccineagainst schistosomiasis, a dis-ease caused by parasiticworms that afflicts more than200 million people worldwide.

"This is an unprecedentedbreakthrough in medicine thatinvolved 30 years of scientificwork," Dr Tania Araujo-Jorge,of the Oswaldo Cruz Institutein Rio de Janeiro, said Tues-day. The institute receivespublic and private funding.

"We are confident thatwithin three years Brazil willbe able to distribute the firstvaccine against parasites, andhelp combat schistosomiasis, adisease that strikes the poorestbecause it is spread by unsan-itary conditions."

The vaccine against the par-asite, which also afflicts cattle, was developed from the recon-struction of a protein found ina species of worm.

Sigin is, in Trinidad, thecommon name of the treewhose scientific name isMoringa oleifera. Its othercommon names include: thedrumstick tree (its long podslook like drumstricks),horseradish tree the taste ofits roots being like that ofhorseradish), Saigin, inGuyana. It arrived fromSanto Domingo (the Do-minican Republic) with thename Merengue, which isbelieved to be a distortion ofits technical name Moringa.Or, perhaps, the sight of its

waving, swirling, flexiblebranches in the wind re-minded the people of theirpride and joy, the meringuedance.

In years gone by whentimes were really tough inAruba, fruit-bearing trees likethe meringue were brought into stave off human and ani-mal starvation. But in rosytimes, such as the present, friends of the past are dis-carded. Thus, though theMerengue still struggles tohold its own in Aruba it isdoing so only because it re-fuses to die. It breaks myheart to see its pods black andshriveling in the sun, and it’sbunches of white blossomsbegging to be looked at.

So let’s give the tree a fairlook.

As Food. Every part of thetree is edible. For centuries ithas been the staple diet ofpeoples in the East and West.

In countries such as Surinam,Guyana and Trinidad, a com-mon belief was – and, per-haps, still is: “On Arubamoney grows on trees.” Icame to Aruba with this be-lief, but was soon disap-pointed to find that on Arubamoney does grow but not ontrees, but from hard work andsacrifice.

As time went by and I be-came knowledgeable aboutAruban life, especially aboutits flora and fauna, it dawnedon me that in Aruba moneydoes, indeed, grow on trees, but not in the form of notesand coins, but in their equiv-alent – food and other lifesupports provided by theSigin tree. The sight of thistree growing wild and neg-lected amazed me because inTrinidad the tree was treas-ured for its food and othervalues. It ranked withspinach, okra, beans and

Number one on the list ofgoodies is its long pea-likepods. When young they arecooked in many ways: boiled, stewed with or without meat,or prepared like okra orbeans. Its tender leaves andflowers make a tasty and nu-tritious salad. Every now andthen they grace my dishes atlunchtime – a contribution ofmy boyhood diet, and proofthat they might lead to a longhealthy life.

Vitamins and Mineralscontents. Protein 42%, cal-cium 125%, magnesium60%, potassium 41% iron71%, Vitamin A 27%, vita-min C 22%. Its leaves containseven times the vitamin C inoranges, four times the cal-cium in milk, four times Vi-tamin A in carrots, the timesthe protein in milk, threetimes the potassium in ba-nanas.

Oil Production. The bark, sap, roots, leaves and seedsproduce oil which is used forcooking, cosmetics and lubri-cation.

Water Purifier. In certainparts of India, crushed, driedseeds are used to purifywater.

Sexual Dysfunction. Insome countries the seeds arebelieved to be effective in re-lieving sexual dysfunction inmen as in women. Hence, perhaps, the reason why it ispopular in Santo Domingo, but frowned upon in Aruba.

The Meringue Tree is, in-deed, a “miracle” tree. Butlook how it has become anonentity tree in Aruba. Myrecent survey shows the fol-lowing:

On my 32 km, 2-hourdrive from Barcadera toTanki Flip and environs I sawonly three Merengue trees;one in my orchard, and an-other at Santa Rosa where Ihad expected to see manyplants on sale. This showsthat if the trend is not re-versed the tree would soon belost to Aruba, as has hap-pened on Curacao.

Of five persons I person-ally interviewed, only one –an elderly woman – knows itsname. None had ever eatenany part of the tree.

Therefore, we’d betterwake up before it’s too late.Let’s not be lazy or snobbish.Let’s be grateful and dancethe Merengue under aMerengue tree.

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The

US Anti-Doping Agency has

brought formal doping charges

against seven-time Tour de

France winner Lance Arm-

strong, the Washington Post

reported on Wednesday.

According to the newspa-

per, the action was outlined in

a letter sent to Armstrong and

several others and could cost

the Texan his titles in the

world's premier cycle race.

The Post reported that in

the letter, USADA alleged it

had collected blood samples

from Armstrong in 2009 and

2010 that were "fully consis-

tent with blood manipulation

including EPO use and/or

blood transfusions."

According to the Post,

which obtained a copy of the

letter, USADA claims it has

witnesses to the fact that Arm-

strong and five former cycling

team associates -- including

Italian doctor Michele Ferrari

and cycling team manager

Johan Bruyneel -- engaged in

a doping conspiracy from

1998-2011.

USADA officials could not

immediately be reached for

comment on Wednesday.Armstrong, who won the

Tour de France from 1999-2005, and used his fame tofuel his charitable work for
