Call to Confession

Prayer of Confession

God of all truth, who can stand before you? We judge by outward appearances, but you

examine our hearts. We see what is on the surface, but you discern beauty deep within. We

measure importance by paychecks, but you find value among those we deem lowly and

insignificant. You offer us the deep and profound joy of living in your realm. We forget your

promises and turn to pursuits that separate us from you and destroy community. We seek

forgiveness and a new direction for our lives. Amen.

Affirmation of Forgiveness

Friends, believe the good news of the gospel.

In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.

* Gloria Patri Henry Greatorex

Glory be to the Father,

and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

As it was in the beginning,

is now, and ever shall be,

world without end.

Amen, Amen.

Moment for Children Heather Mikes

Anthem: “Sing, Praise and Bless the Lord” Jacques Berthier

Children’s Choir and Michele Byrd, Soprano (1923-1994)

Sing, praise and bless the Lord.

Peoples! Nations! Alleluia!

Praise the lord, all you nations, praise Him all you peoples.

Alleluia. Alleluia! Alleluia. Let everything living give praise to the Lord.

Psalm Reading Psalm 20 1 The Lord answer you in the day of trouble! The name of the God of Jacob protect you! 2 May he

send you help from the sanctuary, and give you support from Zion. 3 May he remember all your

offerings, and regard with favor your burnt sacrifices. 4 May he grant you your heart’s desire, and

fulfill all your plans.5 May we shout for joy over your victory, and in the name of our God set up our

banners. May the Lord fulfill all your petitions. 6 Now I know that the Lord will help his anointed;

he will answer him from his holy heaven with mighty victories by his right hand. 7 Some take pride

in chariots, and some in horses, but our pride is in the name of the Lord our God. 8 They will

collapse and fall, but we shall rise and stand upright. 9 Give victory to the king, O Lord; answer us

when we call.

The Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

Children’s Song: “Jesus Loves Me” William Bradbury Jesus loves me, this I know, For the Bible tells me so.

Little ones to Him belong, They are weak but He is strong. Yes, Jesus loves me, yes, Jesus loves me.

Yes, Jesus loves me, the Bible tells me so.

Prayer for Illumination

The Gospel Reading Mark 4:26-34 26 He also said, “The kingdom of God is as if someone would scatter seed on the ground, 27 and would

sleep and rise night and day, and the seed would sprout and grow, he does not know how. 28 The

earth produces of itself, first the stalk, then the head, then the full grain in the head. 29 But when the

grain is ripe, at once he goes in with his sickle, because the harvest has come.” 30 He also said, “With

what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable will we use for it? 31 It is like a mustard

seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; 32 yet when it is

sown it grows up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs, and puts forth large branches, so that the

birds of the air can make nests in its shade.” 33 With many such parables he spoke the word to them,

as they were able to hear it; 34 he did not speak to them except in parables, but he explained

everything in private to his disciples.

The Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

Message “Something Bigger Than Ourselves” The Rev. Robert J. Marrow

Offering

Offertory: “Prayer of St. Francis” Allen Pote

Michele Byrd, Soprano & Colin Gerlach, Violin (b. 1945) Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love. Where there is injury, thy pardon, Lord.

Where there is doubt, let there be faith. Where there’s despair, let me bring hope. Where there is darkness, let there be light.

Where there is sadness, let there be joy. O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console. To

be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive, and it is in pardoning that we are

pardoned. And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.

Prayers of the People and the Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come; thy will be done, on

earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we

forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the

kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

* Hymn: “Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee” HYMN TO JOY

1. Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee, God of glory, Lord of love; Hearts unfold like flowers before Thee, Opening to the sun above. Melt the clouds of sin and sadness; Drive the gloom of doubt away; Giver of immortal gladness, Fill us with the light of day.

2. All Thy works with joy surround Thee, Earth and heaven reflect Thy rays, Stars and angels sing around Thee, Center of unbroken praise. Field and forest, vale and mountain, Flowery meadow, flashing sea, Chanting bird and flowing fountain, Call us to rejoice in Thee.

3. Mortals, join the happy chorus Which the morning stars began; Love divine is reigning o’er us, Joining all in heaven’s plan. Ever singing, march we onward, Victors in the midst of strife, Joyful music leads us sunward In the triumph song of life.

*Commission and Blessing

Walk by faith, not by sight.

God will add to your understanding day by day.

We will seek to view others as God sees them.

We will claim them as sisters and brothers.

Alleluia.

Amen.

Benediction Response:

“Let There Be Peace on Earth” (Copyright 1955 by Jan-Lee Music. Renewed 1983. Used by permission.)

Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me. Let there be peace on earth the peace that was meant to be. With God

as our Father, children all are we; Let us walk with each other in perfect harmony. Let peace begin with me let this be the

moment now. With every step I take let this be my solemn vow. To take each moment and live each moment in peace,

eternally. Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me.

Postlude: “Gigue” J. S. Bach

each day. Our mission project for the week is the Heifer Milk Money program. Bring your spare change to fill

up the milk jug in our Narthex through Sunday, June 13. Explorers can give the gift of good nutrition to

A Prayer for Wisdom for our Graduates:

Dear God, we ask that you help our children to walk in your

wisdom and grace. We pray for spiritual eyes and

discernment in all things. Help them to be wise leaders and

influencers in this generation, not conformed to the world,

but transformed by your power. We ask that you would equip

them with all that they need to make a difference for your

purposes. Help them to live as salt and light in a dark world

that so desperately needs to know your truth. We ask for

your power to help them to walk continually in honesty and

integrity. Build within them deep godliness, that they would

be more concerned about their character than their

reputation. We pray that they would seek to bring honor to

You throughout their lives, that they would have a vision and

heart for the world. Extend their boundaries and give them

incredible influence with people and nations. Make their

hearts and spirits open to every plan and purpose you have

for them, and to be willing to boldly go wherever You call.

Amen.
