or about 10 years now, Jazz à Vienne festival has been encouraging a dialogue between jazz and graphic novels with the event “Traits de Jazz” (understand “Jazz lines”), in partnership with JML Arts and the bookshop Bulles de Vienne. Each edition comes with exhibitions, book signing events, workshops and masterclasses confirming the strong relationship between the two arts.

.In 2021, for its 40th anniversary, Jazz à Vienne

decided to organize the exhibition

“40 bulles de Jazz”

This unique project with original pieces from 40 major cartoonists of today presents an eclectic overview on contemporary graphic novels. Enki Bilal, Pénélope Bagieu, Christophe Blain, Blutch, Charles Burns, Hermann, Manara, Art Spiegelman, Florence Cestac and Chris Ware, to name but a few, all crafted their own inimitable style and share a passion for music.

From different countries and generations, they represent the many trends in graphic novels over the past 40 years. For this exhibition, they come together around a common interest: to wit, jazz. Each of them explores, with their own techniques, the rich spirit of this music: an imaginary world enchanting and unreal one moment, funny the next, yet always moved by a great sensitivity.

The exhibition “40 Bulles de Jazz” is all about the drawings. Yet comics and graphic novels would not be the 9th art without words. In response to the cartoonists’ creations, we invited 40 well-known writers, journalists and artists to set pen to paper and write their feelings about their favourite drawing and/or the overall work of the artist.

Throughout the exhibition, visitors will be able to hear a selection of jazz tracks chosen by the cartoonists and the writers. Also on display will be the 3 concerts with live drawing co-produced by Jazz à Vienne and the international comics festival of Angoulême for Jazz à Vienne 2018, 2019 and 2020.

Drawings, writings and music will be the heart and soul of this three-dimensional exhibition.

performances

The live drawing performance of Juanjo Guarnido and Hugh Coltman was one of the key moments of the 47th edition of the international comics festival of Angoulême. The live meeting of a cartoonist and a musician gave birth to a rich, hybrid piece, crafted with talent and humour right in front of the delighted audience.

This live-drawing performance took the audience on a trip to Africa, cradled by Rokia Traoré’s music and songs in Bambara and enchanted by the drawings of Rubén Pellejero, the cartoonist who brought Corto Maltese back to life with his partner Juan Diaz Canales in 2015. Watch him work his magic and improvise to the mixed music of the Malian artist.

EXHIBITION PROMOTION AND COORDINATIONBenjamin Tanguy (Jazz à Vienne)

Created in 1981, Jazz à Vienne is now the first jazz festival in France and the first cultural event in the French region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Every year, the festival brings together more than 200 000 festival-goers in the Roman Theatre and around various free stages. It has gained international recognition in the eyes of the audience and the artists. For 2 weeks, the legendary places of Vienne vibrate to the sound of the festival: the Roman Theatre, which is the true gem of the festival, the Italian theatre of the Club de Minuit and the garden of the Cybele stage with its ancient ruins… From noon to 3 a.m. every day, Jazz à Vienne invites the festival-goers to discover and experience jazz music in all its riches.

JAZZ À VIENNE

Created for artists, the company JML Arts is based on a simple idea: promoting artists through international events. Be it illustrations, drawings, comic book pages or contemporary art, JML Arts supports emerging and renowned artists alike when dealing with institutional and museum entities, and with the artistic market. Along with Jeanne Pujol, Jean-Marc Lonjon curated the exhibition dedicated to Nicole Claveloux Pujol on the 47th edition of the international comics festival of Angoulême. JML is a chosen partner in the Jazz à Vienne festival and mounted 3 exhibitions for the festival, on the artists Brüno, Chabouté, Juanjo Guarnido, Jacques de Loustal, Julie Rocheleau and Brecht Evens.
