Following the winter sponsored walk in -4 C,

the spring walk brought out more support for

the RAID campaign.

On Sunday 9th May, residents enjoyed a stroll in

the countryside area to the north of Hatfield,

this time in the spring sunshine.

RAID continues to raise funds, to assist in

fighting the DEW project appeal, in Stainforth,

which will affect all the villages in the DN7

region.

For more information see website

www.hatfield-raid.co.uk

RAID Spring walkers start to gather

A Coffee Morning was held at the Hatfield Barn

on the 24th April in aid of the Dunscroft,

Hatfield & Stainforth Branch of the Royal British

Legion.

The event was opened by the Hatfield Town

Mayor Patsy Panks who also covered the Prize

Draw, this raised the sum of £170-32.

"Spike" Window - Mbe,Rvm our Parade Marshal

and Coordinator thanked the Mayor and Mrs

Brenner for their donations and those attending

for their generous help and support of the

Branch and it's work in respect of all Ex

Servicemen and Women.

"We will remember them"

THANK YOU to all who attended and

supported my recent quiz night at Hatfield's for

the RNLI. Although the turnout wasn't fantastic,

those who did attend enjoyed themselves and

helped me raise a further £111, thank you one

and all.

Thanks must also go to Hatfield's, where before

the quiz I enjoyed a very nice meal, as did quite

a few of the people who attended the quiz,

thanks to Ron for the sale of the raffle tickets,

and those who supplied some prizes, and finally

thanks to Wayne and Ann Brown of Stainforth

Carpets who once again sponsored the winning

team prizes.

Artesian Spas. The Spring Bank Holiday week-

end will be our "10th Annual Spring Bank holi-

day Sale" with up to 40% off and a minimum of

10% off everything (*except chemicals and ac-

cessories). It will be for 29, 30 & 31 May only. It

started as a "waterfun weekend" when we were

at Branton. But since moving to Wheatley Hall

Road it has just been an "Annual Bank Holiday

Sale" as we cannot set up the same "family fun"

atmosphere with it being indoors.

Stuart Wade, from Hatfield, competed on

11th April at the 'Judgement Day' international

open tournament held at Ponds Forge in

Sheffield. He placed third in the 'Men's

Traditional Forms' category, competing against

practitioners of

Korean, Japanese and

Chinese martial arts.

The judges

commented after the

category was finished

that the standard of

competitors in the

category was

incredibly high (the

top three including

Stuart have won

medals at World

Championships in their respective styles in

recent years). Due to injury problems this was Stuarts first

tournament since winning the European

Championships in Rome last October. Due to

the injury lay-off he was satisfied with his

placing, although truth be told, he is never

totally happy unless he is stood on top of the

podium!

NORTH EAST DONCASTER CITIZENS

ADVICE BUREAU

Advice Column

I got a letter telling me I was overpaid tax credits dating back to the time I separated

from my husband. This came as a total shock. I don’t have the amount of money they

want me to pay back. I don’t know what to do – please can you help?

You may be affected by recent changes to the way some overpayments of tax credits are calculated.

If you have been overpaid because you separated from your partner or started living with a new

partner and reported this change late, your overpayment may be reduced or even written off.

This is because under the new rules, HM Revenue and Customs will work out what you would have

been paid if you had reported the change and made a new claim on time. They will offset the

overpayment against this amount. HMRC calls this „notional offsetting‟.

Ask the Tax Credits Helpline on 0845 300 3900 for more information or write to the Tax Credit Office requesting that they look again at the amount of your overpayment.

If you have been asked to pay back tax credits and you don‟t understand why, or you think you

don‟t owe the money, you should ask the Helpline for an explanation of how the overpayment

occurred.

If you don‟t agree with the Helpline's explanation of the reason for the overpayment, you can ask

HMRC to look at their decision again. This is called disputing an overpayment. You can do this in

writing or by filling in form TC846 which you can get by calling HMRC on 0845 300 3900.

For more information, or help with sorting out a tax credit problem, contact your local Citizens

Advice Bureau. If you require any advice/assistance concerning the above or any other

issue, please contact North East Doncaster Citizens Advice Bureau on 0844 499 4137

News from Sheep Dip Lane Primary School Sheep Dip Lane Primary School received

a special visitor in May in the form of

local radio station host „Barghy‟ from

Trax Fm.

The school were invited to be on the

morning show and to take part in „Small

Talk‟ where the children from the school

describe an object and listeners of the

show call in to guess what it is that‟s

being described.

Alex went first, introducing herself and

then explaining how „Hair Gel‟ is “sticky

and gooey and most people use it”. Millie

and Bethany followed with excellent

descriptions of a Greenhouse and a Car

Jack, Owen explained how the internet “gives lots of information and you can get it on

your phone and computer” and Bailey concluded that a pencil was “thin and round and

you get different grades and shades”

The children thoroughly enjoyed meeting Barghy and taking part in the radio programme

and everyone from the school, along with parents and friends listened eagerly to the radio

each morning on the week commencing 17th May when the show was broadcast.

For ladies of a certain age,

Who‟s waistlines have expanded, A little exercise is good. In fact it is demanded!

I‟ve never been inside a gym,

To push and pull at weights Or jog along the treadmill hard, And extend aerobic rates.

I suppose I must be lazy It has no great appeal To grunt, sweat and just get hot

Seems quite a ropey deal! That‟s why I like the „Tables‟

The toning beds are fun

And quite a place to meet your friends When all is said and done! I‟d love to shed a few more

pounds And trim my waist and thighs, I‟ll have to work harder then

instead of telling lies! So beds that swing or rock or lift, Seem pretty good to me

They tone my flabby muscles And help my poorly knees. J.A.T.

ROBERT FORSTER CHARITY

Robert Forster lived in Hatfield

before moving to London. He

wrote a will on 22nd January

1619 that became the basis of a

charity that came in to being in

1965 and is still in operation

today.

Following a talk given by Eddie

Durdy, to the Local and Natural

History Group, it was suggested

that a plaque should be made

and placed in Hatfield Library.

Mazel Durdy, Doris and Stan

Thompson along with others

held a coffee morning to raise funds for the project. Mrs Durdy and friends, along with the

secretary, the late Harold Edwards, and the treasurer undertook the task of finding a

manufacturer to make the plaque.

The plaque was placed in the library. Further information and a copy of the will are now

available to read in Hatfield Library

Curry Sauce? On your chips?

Regular readers will know I often look back on my youth

with a sense of gratitude. I had fabulous parents and superb

family, a huge garden to grow up in and also the wonderful

village of Hatfield Woodhouse on my doorstep.

Woodhouse had everything a healthy young lad could

possibly want in the days when mobile phones and the

world wide web were more suited to an episode of Dr

Who. There was a great school with lush playing fields, a

village hall often bustling with one social function or

another, a paper shop, butchers, Chinese takeaway, toy

shop and acre upon acre of farmland to spend the summer

holidays exploring in. But there was no mistaking one of

the true icons of Woodhouse was Lol Harper's chippy!

Unlike the average chip shop of today, offering a

compendium of gastronomic concoctions to make most cardiac doctors reach straight for a

defibrillator, Harpers carried only three items on its menu. Fish, chips and peas! If you asked Lol for

a portion of chips, some chicken kebab meat, chilli sauce and a bottle of Apple Tango the chances

are you would have been barred. Open three midweek nights and Saturday afternoons, queues

would stretch for miles as the RAF staff from Lindholme would land on Lol's doorstep - not literally

mind - for their fishy fix. The menu remained constant for years but eventually Lol decided to

embrace the 20th Century and placed his daughter-in-law's homemade sausages on the menu.

This was not without its problems though as Lol discovered he didn‟t possess a “u” in his collection

of white plastic letters that made up his menu board. For the next 12 years banger lovers in

Woodhouse sounded like they were on a day trip from the West Country as they ordered their

“sasages”. You try explaining that to a South African airman as a pimply-faced 11-year-old.One of

the most astounding facts about Harpers was it sold the cheapest chips in England, appearing on

Calendar sometime in the 1970‟s to confirm the fact. Even now I find myself in drunken debates

about how cheap you can remember them (I can go back as far as 5p per bag). Outside the chippy

was the centre of the universe as far as any Woodhouse adolescent was concerned, particularly the

wooden gas box. It was while sitting on this box that I first tasted Top Deck shandy, showed off my new pod shoes, snogged Andrea Daniels and first caught glimpse of the goddess of love that was

Wendy Woofenden. Life was simple. We would all gather to eat the best-smelling chips known to

man and generally have a laugh. There was no such thing as an i-phone or Facebook, we actually

talked to one another face-to-face. It was on my Friday night chippy run that I witnessed one of the

most impressive romantic gestures Woodhouse had ever seen and one that has been etched into

my mind ever since. I joined the bulging queue as normal and could see Lol had roped off an area

with baling twine and hung a “reserved” sign, made out of some cardboard. Within the area was a

table and chairs for two, complete with tablecloth, tea pot, buttered bread, salt, vinegar and finally

some fancy looking cutlery.

I ordered my bag of chips and left feeling rather curious as I took up my usual seat on the gas box.

As I gobbled up my supper I noticed local couple Mr. and Mrs. Johnson looking rather dapper as

they strolled down in Lol's general direction. It was time for action. I made a strategic purchase of a

can of dandelion and burdock to sneak a peak, as it was the perfect accompaniment for chips, and

could see the happy couple were sat enjoying a fish and chip supper with a 'Happy Anniversary' card

on the table. They sat chatting to the queuing customers as they ate their anniversary meal, both of

them reveling in their special occasion. About 45 minutes later they left the shop and headed to the

Working Mens' Club just in time for the bingo session - probably washing their special supper down

Page 25: Jun 10, Issue 54, The Hatfield Arrow

with a few light ales and a laugh with their mates. Now some of you may be thinking that a night out

at the cheapest chippy in England is not exactly pushing the boat out, but I beg to differ. The couple

in question are still married after 40-odd years, have a great family, and can often be seen taking a

stroll through on a Sunday afternoon.

What it taught me was it's not about throwing money at something to make it special. That fish

supper followed by a session of bingo and beers with the one you love meant more than any posh

nosh at a swanky hotel. Not long after the event Lol left the chippy and it was taken over by his son,

who gradually introduced fancy delights such as homemade fishcakes and pukka pies. You can only

imagine the gossip in the village when curry sauce was eventually introduced. There will never be a

better smell than the aroma of those chips wafting their way down Main Street on a cold Saturday

afternoon and there was never excitement like it in the Wright household than when our Dave

would come home on his bike with six bags of chips under his jumper to keep them warm. Sadly,

Woodhouse chippy closed in the late 80s and is no more. However, I speak for anyone who lived in

Woodhouse and loved that chippy when I say it might be gone but it has never been forgotten. They

say progress is to be embraced but with the chippy, post office and a sad-looking derelict Robin

Hood pub there are getting fewer and fewer meeting places for people to pass the time of day with

each other. On the other hand though there is still a lovely friendly community, a Working Mens'

Club, newsagents and swathes of countryside for people to explore and enjoy. And so one day, if I

ever win the lotto or marry a rich woman, I will move back to Woodhouse and smile at the happy

times that I spent there as a child.

COMMUNITY CHALLENGE CUP

The Thorne & Moorends Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) have gone head to head with Thorne Colliery football club in a “community challenge cup” to celebrate the end of the football season and

the funding they have received for next season.

Thorne Colliery Football Club under 16‟s team took part in the match against the SNT on 5 May at

the recreational ground in Moorends.

The under 16‟s won the match by an impressive 12 goals to nil and were awarded with the

community challenge cup trophy.

The SNT is fully supportive of the football club,

which is funded through the ABC+ programme,

and were delighted they have received funding for

the 2010/11 season. This will enable the club to

book pitches, buy equipment and send players on

training programmes.

Manager of the club John Frost said, “The ABC+

funding we receive is vital to keep the club afloat.

We are a small club and the funding will help us

expand the number of teams we can train. This

will enable the young people from the area to

train with us and keep them from hanging around

on the streets. The game is a great way of bringing

the local SNT and young people together.”

PS Stuart Rowse from the SNT said,” Sport is an

excellent way of offering young people challenges

and alternatives. I am hopeful that this game will

be an annual event and will be looking at ways of

how to actually score goals against them in future

games. I would like to thank the players involved

for taking time out to play in this game and also

Steve Redfearn from Youth Intervention Services

(YIS) in Thorne for supplying the trophy.””

Before the game against Thorne Colliery Football Club under 16‟s and the SNT, Thorne Colliery

Under 10‟s, played the under 11‟s team on and beat them 3-0.

The under 10‟s had just returned from a successful weekend tournament at Butlins. Each player put

100% effort and commitment into every game and conducted themselves equally as well off the

pitch.

The manager, parents and supporters who travelled with the team to the tournament were all very

proud of the team and their performance!

The Manager and team would like to

give special thanks to Howarth

Timber and Building Supplies of

Thorne and manager John Brandon for

sponsoring the team and supplying

t-shirts for the presentation evening.

Thorne Colliery JFC are looking for

players to form teams at under 6‟s and

under 7‟s as well as players to

strengthen their existing squads at

under 11‟s, 12‟s and 17‟s (ages for next season).

Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School News!

Welcome to another busy month at Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School. Today we (Charlotte and John)

are working with a new reporter: Rhys from Foundation 2, who won a golden ticket to help us.

New Entrance

Have you noticed our new door and entrance to the

school? On Friday 30th April we opened our new

entrance officially. We all dressed in clothes from

different eras the school was open – from Victorian

times to modern dress in order to make the day

special.

It was the sister of Corporal Harper Mrs Joan Willis,

who pulled open the ribbon to open the doorway.

Corporal Harper was a pupil at this school and

during the Second World War he lost his life when

trying to save the town of Merksplas in Belgium. He

was awarded the Victoria Cross. Year 5 and 6 learnt

all about Corporal Harper when his nephew Mr

Harper came into talk to us about the Victoria Cross

and showed us a DVD about the life of Corporal Harper and his memorial in Merksplas. The primary

school children in Merksplas take turns to polish the memorial every week and consider it a great honour.

Health and Safety Inspection

We are celebrating more success because our school received a grading of outstanding for a recent

health and safety inspection. The inspector was looking for things like

Fire risk assessments and fire practice records

How safe the main entrance of the school is

How well Mrs Acton and the teachers consider the risks involved in any school activities to make it

as safe as possible and the safety training records of staff

The School Emergency Plan

Mr Pettigrew (site-manager) and Mrs Acton were delighted with the result and are already working hard

on the few action points raised.

Maketon Sign Language

All the teachers and teaching assistants at school have been learning about Maketon sign language. They

are now teaching the children how to say „line up‟, „talk‟ and „listen‟ in Maketon. Rhys thinks it is fun.

SATS Week

Year 6 had the week they had been waiting for this week. It was SATS week and they were all hard at

work. We hope they get the marks they deserve and that these results will put them in the appropriate

sets in their new secondary schools.

Trips out and Visitors in!

After a busy SAT week our year 6 children, also to be accompanied by the year 5s are looking forward to

a trip to Hatfield Water Park. We will also have a great time on Hatfield Moors when we go walking for a

full day. I wonder if we will be as fortunate as the year 3 children who saw a wild snake going into its

burrow on a recent trip to Austerfield. We will tell you more about it next month – hope the sun shines

for us!

We will also be able to tell you about the year 2,3,4 and 5 children having an experience they will never

forget when the parcel company DHL will be teaching then about truck safety. One of their lorries will be

pulled into our play-ground.

Travis pays tribute to a much loved site manager.

The reporters have had an emotional challenge this month

because their task has been to interview the adults around

school following the death of our caretaker, Bob Riley. Bob was

caretaker at Travis School from September 2004 until

November 2009 when he was forced to retire as a result of ill

health.

Our younger children may not have known Bob as he had been

poorly for some time; however, during his time at Travis school,

he was much loved by both children and the staff alike.

The children asked the adults around school for their favourite

memories of Bob and here are some of the answers they

received.

He loved the children when they got a golden ticket and they chose him.- Anya (Bob lead

one of the Golden time activities)

Mr Riley put the oven on at 6am in the morning for Christmas Day. Mr Riley was chief

tester for all Jane‟s new recipes.- Alex T

He always had a smile and he always followed the golden rules- Cody.

He polished the floor until you could see your face- Joseph.

Mr Riley did his job with enthusiasm, energy and always with a smile. Nothing was too

much trouble for him- Lauren.

Every morning Mr Riley used to go on his leaf sucker and suck all the leaves up and then

the next day all the leaves were on the floor again so he would suck all the leaves up, this

made him angry!- Oliver.

Mr Riley went on to the roof to collect all the lost balls- Maisy.

Bob Riley was a wonderful colleague and friend, a man who made a positive contribution

to the life of our school. Our condolences go to his dear wife Carole and family.

Five Tips to Prepare Your Car for Summer

Dear readers,

After a long winter of wear and tear through snow, salt and potholes - and volcanic dust - your car

will be in need of a little TLC. Being prepared for the summer and making checks now can save you

a lot of money in the long run. Try to deal with any minor problems and repairs as they happen, as

they can become very expensive if left to build up over time. Here are five tips to prepare your car:

rusting if left on the bodywork. If possible take your car to a car wash that specializes in

under-car cleaning to get rid of every trace.

replacing your car‟s pollen filter annually is a vital investment. Keeping your air-con well maintained

will help, too.

-con will help your car smell better. If it smells stale when you turn the

heating on, it could well be a sign that mould is building up in your condenser.

windscreen and headlamps when you stop for fuel is also important as windscreen wipers won‟t get

rid of all the fly debris.

remember to replace them regularly. After the dust that has fallen from the volcanic ash

cloud, it is particularly important that you clean them regularly to avoid damaging your

windscreen.

Certain checks should be made regardless of the

season: Anti-freeze contains corrosion inhibitors

so you should keep your car topped up with the

right mixture all year round; going without could

lead to expensive internal damage such as a blown

head gasket.
