JUMPSTARTJumpstart is a national early education organization that prepares pre-school children living in some of the most under-resourced neighborhoods across the country for kindergarten. We recruit and train college students and community volunteers, known as Corps members, to implement our research- based curriculum in preschool classrooms nationwide.

Since 1993, Jumpstart has partnered with universities, preschools, government officials, and local/national organizations to transform the lives of preschool children and their families, enabling them to be ready to learn, thrive in school, graduate from high school, and create a strong foundation for future success.

THE NEEDChildren who start school academically behind their peers are more likely to stay behind and this gap only widens over time. Every child deserves the chance to reach his or her full potential, yet children from low income neighborhoods start kindergarten 60% behind their more affluent peers.

In the Classroom

About Our CurriculumOur curriculum is carefully designed to provide strategies for our Corps members to maximize the time they spend with children, and targets specific language and literacy skills that are most important to a child’s future academic success.

How it WorksJumpstart sessions take place more than 1,000 times each week across the country. Each session revolves around a core storybook and one book serves as the focus for two sessions. Session plans are organized in six unit themes: Family, Friends, Wind and Water, The World of Color, Shadows and Reflections, Things That Grow and use the following routine:

Jumpstart is the only national preschool program of its kind, leveraging adult-child relationships to create an environment rich for early learning.

ELCOME: Children transition to Jumpstart from their previous activity. They build alphabet knowledge through exploration of name cards and

over time develop an understanding of meaning and use of print.

W EADING: Children and Corps members engage in a shared reading experience to develop an understanding of selected vocabulary and deepen

their comprehension of the story and related content knowledge.

R

IRCLE TIME: Children participate by singing songs, playing word and letter games, and reading poems. The whole-group learning experience

builds a sense of community among children and adults.

CENTER TIME: Centers are set up with materials and activities that support children’s language and literacy skill development. Activities are inspired

by the unit theme and core storybook, deepening children’s understanding of the book and providing opportunities to use story vocabulary.

C

ET’S FIND OUT ABOUT IT: Small group activities are designed to build children’s concept knowledge and vocabulary. Here, children have the opportunity

to explore new ideas and information, learn about objects and their use, and understand how things work.

L HARING & GOODBYE: Children talk and listen to others share their favorite session activities in a large group setting. Corps members use rich

vocabulary or examples of children’s work from Center Time to support the conversation.

S

More than 90% of Jumpstart children make gains in language and literacy skills, a key component of kindergarten readiness.
