WATERFALLA message from

As the year draws to a close and the holidays begin, we would like to wish all our residents, and workers, a wonderful holiday season. This time of year promises to be filled with fun

at Waterfall, with the Mall of Africa here for the first time –and determined to make a big impact!

In this edition we have included an article on behalf of the Mall called ‘Keep It Simple’, suggesting five (fun) ways to ensure the best festive season yet. There’s nothing simple about the Mall’s own extravaganza though, where a nightly show, featuring plenty of entertainment, enough to keep all ages enthralled, is set to become a highlight of the holidays for many.

Look out for the article that gives further details on the show, ‘Fantasy of Light’, which includes more than 100 costumes, a waterfall of lights, a concert and a captivating storyline. It runs until the 24th December 2016 – so don’t miss out.

We are sure you’ll agree that the Mall is a tremendous addition to life on the Waterfall development, with its shopping and entertainment activities that add to the convenience and enjoyment of living here.

As we near the end of the year, we reflect on an interesting period, both financially and politically, and we hope that 2017 will bring more stability to South Africa and the rest of the world. Even the weather has been erratic, but of course we are thankful for the rain and hope it brings some relief during this severe drought. Please do continue to use water sparingly, even if at times the skies deliver far too much of it.

Finally, this month Netcare has highlighted another relevant topic – that of childhood fevers. Many of our residents are parents, given that Waterfall is such a

wonderful place to raise a family. Childhood fevers are a common worry for all parents and we hope this article will provide some good insight and prove reassuring.

It just remains to wish you all a very happy and peaceful holiday season.

We trust we will see you safely back for a happy and healthy 2017.

Kindest regards,Waterfall Management

As 2016 draws to a close, it’s

fascinating to look back and see

how much has been achieved at

Waterfall in the past 12 months.

It’s odd to think that a year ago there was no operating Mall of Africa, which is now the cornerstone of shopping and social requirements for many residents and workers on the various Estates.

While the enormous Mall has been the most visible sign of progress, Waterfall CEO, Willie Vos points out that a lot of smaller, but equally important projects have been completed to make living and working at Waterfall a more pleasant and rewarding experience.

Great news for parents of young children, Grade R – Grade 7, is that the Curro Waterfall Primary School with space for 1 200 pupils is due to be completed by the end of this year. The Embury Teacher Training College to be run by Curro will also be completed by year end. “The college will have a maximum capacity of 700 students. Curro sees the value in training quality educators not only for all the schools they plan to open, but for South Africa in general,” Vos says.

Waterfall Issue 11 2016 5

This year also saw the opening of Waterfall Wilds, an eco-friendly development centred around the Keith Kirsten nursery. The Wilds also features the Turn & Tender and the family-friendly Nostimo restaurants.

“This year was almost as busy as last year, as we completed a number of projects that we started last year,” Vos says. “We didn’t start that many new projects this year, but a number are lining up to begin in 2017.”

The results of all these activities continue to be award-winning. In September, The Waterfall Development competed against the best property professionals across Africa and the Middle East, to be recognised as winners in the Mixed-Use Development and Residential Development categories in South Africa and Africa.

“We have planned and watched this new city unfold over the last few years and such recognition truly emphasises the excellence of this project that we are building – setting a new standard for mixed-use developments in South Africa. Waterfall not only offers a more convenient lifestyle but its strategic location and attention to detail in all areas of development is ecologically sensitive and provides a new standard in quality estate living,” Vos says.

Among this year’s other developments was the completion of a BP petrol station,

providing yet another essential service for residents.

On the business and industrial side, new premises for Torre Lifting Solutions by Attacq and Atterbury were completed, including warehouses, offices and stands for equipment storage. New premises for the popular tiling companies CTM and Italtile were also completed, again proving that Waterfall’s business district is becoming the hottest location in the province.

On the residential side, Century will complete The Sheds @Waterfall, a cluster of 72 homes available for renting, by the end of the year. Meanwhile, on Century’s Waterfall Crescent development the first 24 houses are completed, with a total of 49 houses

within Waterfall Country Estate to be completed by August 2017. These four- and five-bedroom homes were pre-built to remove the wait for a home to be built, for people without the time or enthusiasm for a custom-built creation. Century will also commence with construction of houses in Jukskei View Ext 41 and Ext 42 early next year. This will be the last phase to be launched inside the Waterfall Country Estate.

The last houses have been completed at Waterfall Valley Mature Lifestyle Estate and the community spirit is thriving. For anyone wanting to secure their future here, Century still has about 12 completed homes for sale.

Since Century has now finished about 90% of its residential developments on Waterfall, the inconvenience of construction work is a thing of the past. The value of the houses should also start to rise as people can no longer buy into most areas except through a resale property.

“There are only about 20 vacant stands still available here and there, although people may pick up a resale house if somebody emigrates,” Vos says.

Amazingly, only about 35% of Waterfall’s total planned developments have been completed so far, although on the west of the N1 about 60% is complete while the eastern side of the motorway remains ready for development. TM

CHILDHOOD FEVER FRIEND OR FOE?

Fever is one of the most common reasons for patients to seek medical attention. It is also often a cause of great concern to parents, compounded by the fear that their child or baby could have a seizure or fit

associated with the fever.

WHAT IS FEVER?Fever is part of the body’s normal immune system response to illness. As such it helps to facilitate and speed up recovery. In children, fever is defined as a core body temperature of 380C and above. The fever, in itself, is not dangerous but it is rather the underlying cause of the fever that may or may not need to be addressed.

WHY DO WE TREAT FEVER?In a child who is otherwise well, mild fever often does not require treatment. When treatment is initiated, the goal is to alleviate associated discomfort which in turn results in improved feeding, hydration, activity and reduced irritability.

Advice on some common concerns. By Dr. Rustie Maloney, Waterfall City Hospital Emergency Department

Dr. Rustie Maloney

Waterfall News

14 Waterfall Issue 11 2016

HOW DO I MEASURE TEMPERATURE?In a home situation, the most appropriate ways to measure temperature in a child is either in the ear or under the arm (axilla), using the appropriate device.

When measuring underarm temperature, a digital or glass thermometer tip is placed in the armpit while the arm is held gently against the body.

For ear temperature monitoring, an infra-red tympanic thermometer is used with the probe of the thermometer being placed in the ear canal while the ear lobe is gently pulled backwards.

WHEN DO I NEED TO BE CONCERNED?Fever is often related to self-limiting mild viral infections. If a child is older than 3 months, is eating/drinking well, breathing normally, behaving normally and the fever is of recent onset (less than 2 days) and there are no rashes or seizures, the underlying cause is unlikely to be of too much concern. Any fever in a child younger than 3 months is worrying, however, and the child should be examined by a doctor. He/she should also be assessed if he/she is lethargic, having difficulty breathing, not eating or drinking or looks ill.

As a parent, you know your child best and your instincts are very important. Guidelines and knowledge about fever are helpful in reducing stress associated

with assisting your ill child, but you should never feel afraid or ‘silly’ for seeking medical attention or advice when you are worried.

HOW DO I TREAT FEVER AT HOME?Common medication to treat fever includes oral or rectal paracetamol and oral ibuprofen and can be given to make your child more comfortable. It is very important to confirm and use the correct dose appropriate for his/her weight and age. Ibuprofen is probably a better choice than paracetamol these days, based on recent research.

Children sometimes verbalise feeling cold and may even shake and be warm to the touch while experiencing fever. These are called ‘rigors’ and are a natural response to the fever. Warming the child will worsen the situation; it is better to dress the child lightly and avoid wrapping him/her in blankets. It is also very important to encourage your child to drink fluids regularly.

WHAT IS A FEBRILE SEIZURE?It is a convulsion/fit that can occur in young children during an episode of fever. Not all children with fever are at risk of having a seizure. There are factors, some still poorly understood, such as a family predisposition, which make someone more prone to having a seizure.

Generally, febrile seizures occur from the age of 6 months and up to the age of 5 or 6 years and affect approximately 2% to 5% of children. Although it is frightening for any parent or carer to witness a febrile seizure, most of these simple febrile seizures last from seconds to minutes, are self-limiting and harmless. Simple febrile convulsions do not lead to brain injury or affect intelligence.

WHAT SHOULD I DO WHEN MY CHILD HAS A FEBRILE SEIZURE?Stay calm – this old cliché is easier said than done, but being aware of some basic tips may be helpful in relieving

some stress in this inevitably stressful situation.

Note the time of onset of the seizure, in order to estimate the duration, as your healthcare provider may find this information helpful when investigating the possible causes and trying to determine if the seizure is of the simple febrile type.

Do not try to restrain the little one, rather place him/her on an appropriate safe surface to prevent falls and injury (by bumping into objects).

Do not put objects in the infant’s mouth to ‘press the tongue down’ but rather place him/her on their side. This is important to prevent choking as positioning a person on their side will automatically help to keep their airway open and free from secretions or vomit which could obstruct the back of the throat and air passage.

Seek medical attention, especially ifit is a first episode, to make sure it is indeed a febrile seizure and not due to epilepsy or other medical conditions.

WILL MY CHILD HAVE FURTHER SEIZURES?If your child or baby has had one episode of febrile convulsions while sick, there is a slightly increased risk of this happening in subsequent instances of fever. It does not mean, however, that he or she will definitely have further episodes of febrile seizures.

DOES MY CHILD HAVE TO TAKE ANY TREATMENT TO PREVENT FURTHER SEIZURES?Treatment is generally not necessary, but in some circumstances, especially if they are experiencing multiple seizures or seizures that are not simple febrile seizures, the treating doctor may recommend that preventative medication be used. In these situations, the treatment is usually temporary.

Waterfall Advertorial

In a residential estate, agility, safety, convenience and cost-effective operation are what people want and there is no vehicle in South Africa

that delivers on these features like the Club Car Precedent i2 and the Club Car Villager 4 golf carts from Smith Power Equipment (SPE).

The Precedent i2, probably the most advanced golf cart ever built, has set the standard for style and performance. Powered by the Club Car electronic fuel injection (EFI) engine, it is arguably the most economical petrol engine on the market. If preferred, one could also opt

for an electric motor, which offers the quietest and smoothest ride. From its 360° wrap-around bumper to its ergonomic seats, the Precedent i2 provides comfort, stability and safety on the undulating ground conditions of a golf course or on the streets of Waterfall, where your Club Car will handle like a sports car.

“The attention to detail is remarkable,” says Stephen Mangold of Smith Power Equipment. “Each detail takes the user into account, from the Monson top, which channels the water away from the passengers, to the newly-designed interior with more storage space for personal items.”

With the Villager 4, the most economical personnel carrier in the Club Car range, the entire family can be transported around the estate! Whether you choose the petrol or electric model with the renowned and innovative Excel™ Electric Drive System, your ride will be fast, smooth, quiet, safe … and classy!

Some of the more important features of the Villager 4 include impact and UV resistant body panels, a 360° bumper system, specially-designed ergonomic seats ensuring the most comfortable ride, and Club Car’s exclusive aluminium chassis that

eliminates rust and corrosion significantly, extending the vehicle’s life span.

Mangold stresses that Club Car has one of the lowest costs of ownership in the industry. “With the E.R.I.C. (Efficient, Reliable, Intelligent and Connected) advanced battery charging system and the new Subaru EX40 EFI engine, which Club Car chose for its best-in-class power and reliability, Club Car now enjoys a 35% power boost while using 35% less fuel.”

“The longer you own these machines, the greater the return on your investment,” he says, “because their lower operational, maintenance and fuel costs accrue year after year, repaying your investment with long-term returns.”

Finding people in the industry in South Africa to sing Club Car’s praises is not difficult. Two of these are the well-known CCJ golf director, Bevan du Plessis who says: “Club Car is one of the foremost brands in this industry….”, and Dave Usendorff, the Els Club Copperleaf Operations Director who says: “the quality of Club Car is unquestionable!”

OUR SPOTTED THICK-KNEE (DIKKOP) FAMILY

Article and photographs by Ron Searle

It was mid-September when the two eggs were laid in a scrape in the ground of the flowerbed of our next door neighbour, no more than 5m from our glass-enclosed patio doors. It was in fact whilst sitting on our patio one

evening, enjoying a sundowner, that I first noticed the adult Dikkop incubating the eggs under the shade of the bushes in the flowerbed. There followed a month of devoted incubation by the two adult birds and a period of very interesting observation on our part, which included a number of noteworthy events.

One morning, the arrival of the STM staff to spread a pile of topsoil on to the flowerbeds required that I immediately inform them of the presence and exact location of the Dikkop nest, urge them to give the incubating bird a wide berth when

Sleepy parent with both chicks.

spreading the material and to minimise, if at all possible, any disturbance to both adult birds, so as to avoid desertion by them of their nest. Needless to say, the STM staff were fully co-operative and a potentially disastrous situation was averted.

Our neighbour was initially unaware of the Dikkop nest and every second evening the incubating adult bird duly received an apparently very refreshing 20-minute shower occasioned by the sprinkler system. When this neighbour departed overseas, shortly after the introduction of water restrictions, and having delegated responsibility for the hand-held hose-watering of his flowerbeds to his neighbour in turn, a second intervention on my part was necessary to interrupt and inform him during his evening watering duty, of the presence and location of the nesting Dikkop pair and to make a plea to him to exercise care in watering that particular flowerbed, which he did of course.

Then, three or four days prior to hatching, I noticed on one of my infrequent visits during the early afternoon to our patio, when temperatures are very high, that the Dikkop was sitting (both birds take it in turn to incubate) on only one egg – the other had disappeared. Panic-stricken I grabbed my binoculars (always handy and which make it so much easier to see the cryptically-coloured domestic-hen-sized eggs) and began diligently searching locally for the missing egg. And there, in the shallow ditch marking the edge of the flowerbed in the blazing sun lay the errant egg which had somehow moved from the safety of the nest-scrape and then rolled down the slope coming to rest in the ditch a metre away. Quickly I retrieved and replaced the egg next to its twin much to the consternation of both adult birds who fearlessly and fiercely confronted me with angry hissing noises plus wide-spread open wings to enhance their size.

Mid-October at 11h00 the first egg hatched confirming a gestation period

of close to 30 days. The following morning only one adult (both adults are very similar in appearance but the larger of the two is probably the male) was present at the nest site, but no egg, chicks or other adult. Later, however, we were absolutely delighted to notice one of the adult birds standing with a chick tucked under each wing, only the relatively long legs and feet protruding and not making contact with the ground. Quite a feat! (excuse the pun). Both eggs had hatched successfully despite one of them having been exposed to full sunlight for an undetermined period.

The following day the whole Dikkop family, or so I had thought, moved from the flowerbed overlooking the river to the flowerbed along our boundary with Plover Road. Later that afternoon, as darkness approached, I was puzzled by an incessant two-note chirp apparently emanating from the former flowerbed. Before retiring inside from the patio, I made a final effort to trace the unidentified sound which had continued unabated for 20 minutes or more, and there, in a clearing in the flowerbed, I spotted a tiny bundle of camouflaged fluff, the smaller and weaker of the two chicks which had apparently been, probably unintentionally, left behind

by the rest of the family earlier in the afternoon. For the fourth occasion I ‘intervened’ and rescued the chick and surprisingly had no trouble in re-uniting it with its two parents and sibling.

A visit to our neighbour’s garden by a pair of Slender Mongooses, ferocious little predators not averse to a meal of Dikkop chick, was another alarming event for the parents, the one advancing menacingly with outstretched wings towards the Mongooses, the other protectively crouched over and brooding the two chicks. Fortunately the Mongooses aborted their foray and left hungry.

Three weeks after hatching, the Dikkop family of four revisited our garden having more recently taken to moving further afield each day for foraging and roosting during daylight hours (Dikkops are nocturnal and crepuscular).

Although my wife and I lived on an agricultural plot 2 km downstream on the Jukskei River and had 47 years of the pleasure of observing numerous resident Dikkops, we never have experienced such close and intimate contact with these lovable birds so common on Waterfall. TM

LOW FAT CHEESECAKE RECIPE• 180g plain biscuits (such as digestive or Marie)• 90g unsalted butter, melted• 250g low-fat cream cheese• 250g low-fat cottage cheese• 250g low-fat plain yoghurt• 2 eggs• 2/3 cup (150g) caster sugar• 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extractPre-heat the oven to 160°C (not fan-forced). Line the base of a 20cm cake pan with baking paper. To make the base, crumble the biscuits in a food processor, add the melted butter and process to combine.Place mixture into a pan and use your hand to press down fi rmly in the base. Bake in the oven for 10 minutes, then remove and cool.To make the fi lling, mix remaining ingredients in a food processor until smooth. Pour over cooled base, then bake for a further 35-40 minutes (it may still have a slight wobble, but will fi rm on cooling).Cool the cake in turned-off oven with the door slightly ajar (this is to prevent top from cracking). Serve with seasonal fruit.

Ice creams: We all love ice cream! However, ice cream is high in fat and sugar. Opt for yoghurt-based ice pops or lollies. They are delicious and easy to make at home.

JAMIE OLIVER STRAWBERRY ICE LOLLY• 250g strawberries• 100ml natural yoghurt (or apple or orange juice) • 1 teaspoon honey.Whizz up the ripe strawberries, natural yoghurt (or apple or orange juice) and the honey in a blender or food processor. Taste, and add a little more honey/xylitol if you think you need to. Divide the strawberry mixture between 4 ice lolly moulds, then pop a stick into each one. Put the ice lollies in the freezer for at least 4 hours or until solid.

Always stay active! Take regular walks, jog, play tennis, swim or even continue to hit the gym if that is what you enjoy. At least the excess kilojoules get burned up and you feel much lighter and maintain better energy levels during this season.

It is that time of year again when the Christmas decorations start going up and we realise that another year has gone by in the blink of an eye. We all do look forward to some of the special

treats we make over the Festive Season, however we are aware that many of the treats are not the best to keep our waistlines in check.

Let’s take a closer look at some of our treats. Remember we are trying to make the better choice here and still have a treat.

The recommendations are: Alcoholic drinks – use a light version and dilute

drinks with sugar-free cold drinks or ice. Try and have an alcoholic drink with one main meal only instead of drinking all day.

Excess sugar should be avoided. Use sugar-free cold drinks and low-cal juices. Sweets and chocolates should be taken as a treat instead of eating them daily.

Water must be taken in suffi cient amounts. Alcohol dehydrates you and sugar competes with water in the gut, thus making constipation more likely to happen over the festive period. Drink 2,5 – 3,5 litres of water daily to stay well hydrated.

Keep your starches in check. Summer is a great time to eat more veggies and salads with protein. Have a starch at one main meal only.

Christmas Fruit cake: a piece of fruit cakecan easily be equivalent to two slices of bread-worth of carbohydrates with additional kilojoules depending on the amount of alcohol in the cake. It is an energy-dense food as it is packed with nuts and dried fruits. Rather opt for a low-fat cheesecake that can save you some carbohydrates and kilojoules. If you can make your own cheesecake you can use a low-fat cream cheese, making it lower in fat.

THE BEST CHRISTMAS TURKEY

EVERBy Jeannette Malan

At a recent dinner party at the Four Season’s Hotel (previously called The Westcliff) I had the honour of meeting the wonderful executive chef Dirk Gieselmann. What a remarkable man!

Unfortunately, the job of cooking that “perfect” Christmas

turkey still often falls on the shoulders of women. According to a survey 67 percent of South African females will be in charge of Christmas dinner this year. For all these lucky women Chef Gieselmann was kind enough to share his wonderful Turkey recipe.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT EXECUTIVE CHEF DIRK GIESELMANN

Cooking for Dirk Gieselmann was once just a hobby. He recalls his eureka moment halfway through his university studies. “I wanted to impress my girlfriend by serving her lobster. But I wasn’t sure if the frozen one I had purchased was already cooked. Needless to say I cooked it just in case – and the result was awful! I realised then, I really wanted to learn how to cook professionally.”

Determined to learn the ropes in one of the best restaurants in his home city, Gieselmann ditched his engineering studies, and began an apprenticeship under Uwe Quitter and Maurice de Boer at the former Michelin one-star Restaurant Gala in Aachen, Germany. His hard work paid off, taking him to kitchens all over the world, from La Réserve de Beaulieu and Le Negresco in Nice to the Intercontinental Tahiti Resort in Papeete and New York City’s Le Cirque.

For the past seven years, the 43-year-old German worked as Chef de Cuisine alongside owner Marc Haeberlin at the famed Michelin three-star Auberge de l’Ill restaurant in Illhauesern in France’s Alsace region.

While travel and mentoring by great chefs has played an important role in shaping Gieselmann’s career, he believes that reading about the rich culinary traditions of different countries has been essential to developing as a chef. “You must soak up as much as possible. My whole life revolves around food,” he says with a chuckle.

The move to Johannesburg opens an exciting new chapter for Gieselmann. “This is an incredibly vibey, bustling city,” he says. “I’m really excited about creating dining experiences here that embrace Johannesburg’s energy and showcase the exceptional local produce and wines, offering its residents and visitors something exceptional.”

Committed to using seasonal ingredients sourced from trusted local suppliers, Gieselmann’s passion for French cuisine, twinned with his experience in kitchens all over the world, make him uniquely placed to bring contemporary yet classic cuisine to the Four Seasons Hotel Westcliff Johannesburg’s restaurants. Diners at Flames will experience Gieselmann’s refined take on informal eating, with a menu of snacks and classics made using the very best ingredients in an outdoor braai kitchen. View, Gieselmann’s signature restaurant, showcases his unpretentious yet exquisite cuisine – “an expression of myself, my own take on food,” he says.

Truffled Turkey with chestnuts and apples For 6 persons

1 Young turkey of 3kg with its liver 80 g Foie gras terrine 120 g Butter 8 Red dessert apples40 g Black winter truffle 40 ml Brandy2 tbsp Port wine1 tbsp Sugar200 g Chestnuts peeled ¼ l Chicken stock 2 slices Bacon

Empty and draw the turkey, leaving the skin of the neck very long so that the opening of the bird can be secured firmly when trussing. Insert beneath the skin some large slices of truffles that have been seasoned and soaked in brandy.

Remove the gall bladder from the turkey liver and pound the liver with the foie gras, 75g butter and 2 tablespoons of port wine.

Coat the chestnuts with some butter and sugar, add the stock and cook until tender. Let them cool down, strain the remaining stock and chop coarsely.

Peel the apples and remove the seeds. Cut into thick slices and brown them in a frying pan with some butter.

Season the bird with salt and pepper inside and outside.

Mix together half of the apples, the chestnuts, the chopped truffle trimmings and the livers. Season with salt and pepper and the remaining brandy. Stuff the bird with this mixture.

Place a thin strip of bacon on the breast and the back of the turkey and tie up firmly. Cook the turkey in a preheated oven at about 200°C for about 2 hours for a 3kg bird.

The bird is cooked if the juices released when the skin is pricked, are clear.

Put the remaining apples in the roasting pan with the turkey and toss them in the juices of the turkey. Remove the bacon and crisp the skin of the turkey under the grill of the oven if needed. Carve the usual way and serve with the apples.

Accompany the dish with potato Roesti and sautéed wild mushrooms.

IS ALL STRESS NEGATIVE?

“Most of the stress we bring on ourselves is because of bad habits and bad attitudes.” Vikrant Parsai. By Bridget Edwards

Stress can be likened to a coin which we all know has two sides – heads or tails, positive or negative, beneficial or detrimental. With discernment and a level-headed approach, it is possible to determine

how best to handle stress, including daily stressors. Contrary to popular belief, not all stress is negative, or even detrimental.

To expand, I would like to share the following aspects for introspection of the stress in your life:

From a holistic point of view, the dualistic principles that govern all aspects of life naturally govern stress too. In duality both extremes coexist simultaneously, for example hot and cold, electric and magnetic, male verses female etc, and stress is no different. Every stressful situation has a positive solution. Unfortunately, for the most part, we

don’t easily see solutions when we are stressed. How we elect to see and react to stressful situations is the real issue. Naturally our stress reactions are unique for every individual – no two people respond to stress in the same way.

The determining factors of how one perceives stress, either positively or negatively, is governed by an individual’s belief system, their programming and perceptions, but most importantly, their ability to adapt and cope with change without putting up resistance.

Resistance saps one’s life-force energy, and is the opposite of acceptance or ‘going with the flow’. The more resistance, the more likely stress will escalate, and the effects are then negative – ‘what you resist, persists!’ Instead, and as best as possible, adopt a positive attitude and mindset, and focus

on acceptance while seeking possible solutions to a stressful situation. These two well-known sayings help to reiterate this point, ‘what you think about, you bring about’ and ‘what you focus on, expands.’ In other words, the more we stress the more stress we will feel, but the more we focus on finding a solution, the more likely we are to find that solution.

For the most part it is important to realise stress is both a matter of perception of the situation, but also a choice of where one decides to place one’s energies – in resisting the situation (negative), or in finding solutions (positive). As such, stress provides a great opportunity for reflection and re-evaluation. This can have a beneficial outcome for even the most stressful of situations.

It is important to understand the three stress response triggers inherent in all human beings, namely the flight, fight or freeze response and their effects. Two stress responses drive instinctual action (flight and fight), while the other appears inactive or passive (freeze), and depending upon the circumstances, any one of the three automatic stress responses can be appropriate for one’s overall safety and survival. Since survival is crucial for our existence as human beings, this is another positive aspect of stress.

Likened to a figurative guide or teacher, stress subtly encourages and at times coerces us to adapt, to cope, to change and to learn new things, new skills and new ways of thinking. At times stress may be painful, particularly as we feel stretched to capacity, torn apart or frayed at the edges but this is how we learn, grow and evolve as human beings. Most importantly, stress expands our awareness and consciousness which is absolutely necessary for man’s evolution. Everything in the Universe is constantly changing,

and a person is either growing or dying. I’m sure you will agree, growth is the only path to living successfully.

Einstein said, “Doing the same thing over and over again while expecting a different result, is the height of insanity.” In stressed situations we so often repeat habitual patterns of behaviour, and temporarily get stuck without realising it. Stressful situations can either control us, or stop us in our tracks (the freeze response). This is where procrastination sets in, we cannot think clearly, creativity and productivity are impaired, memory is affected, and in extreme cases, we’re rendered helpless or useless for a moment. With chronic or prolonged stress, these negative effects are exacerbated. This is why I’ve coined the phrase, ‘stress is a dream stealer’.

Alternatively, a stressful situation can propel one into action (fight or flight) to seek appropriate solutions and to think out of the box - to rise above current abilities or circumstances, and ultimately to make a different, more inspired choice that serves one better i.e. change jobs, leave a relationship, move to another city etc. In this instance, stress is a catalyst, and provides inspiration and motivation for change.

Over time, daily stress can leave one feeling pressured, overwhelmed, exhausted and frayed at the edges. This can create a potential health risk, and possibly place both work and relationships in jeopardy. In this case, we should not be in denial of the effects of our stressful lifestyle but view this as an early warning signal. In this light, the stressful situation should be embraced as a gift and blessing, not a curse. Perhaps now more than ever, it is time for you to make necessary lifestyle changes.

IS ALL STRESS NEGATIVE? EINSTEIN SAID,

“DOING THE SAME THING OVER AND OVER AGAIN

WHILE EXPECTING A DIFFERENT RESULT, IS THE

HEIGHT OF INSANITY.”

Heed those early warnings signals – be alert, aware, open and honest with yourself. Self-mastery and understanding is all about self-awareness and observation. Don’t play the game of being a martyr because that serves no one, least of all you. In reality, denial, resistance, and stubbornness don’t serve you either. These reactions often exacerbate the problem, and create further unnecessary stress. Honest reflection is vitally important when addressing stress and stressors, and when you know what to look out for, there are numerous telltale or early warning signals calling for your attention. The more you deny, resist and stubbornly refuse, the louder the alarm bells become. Be clear. Be congruent. Without doubt, stress is an early warning; take cognisance of that hunch and the tiny inner voice calling out for help.

As a dear friend often said, “Truth is hidden in plain sight”, and so are our solutions to stressful circumstances. We simply need to be open, remove our blinkers and resistance, breathe, relax and get ourselves out of the way – again simple, not necessarily easy to do! If all else fails, ask your colleagues, family and friends for honest feedback about the effects of the stress in your life – they’ll tell you the truth if you ask for it.

Since stress is natural, and considered a normal part of life, it can serve a useful purpose. For many people the daily demands, deadlines, frustrations and hassles are so common that stress has become an accepted way of life. For some people, there is a warped perception that stress, or the amount of stress, is actually indicative of success and therefore a necessary ingredient of success, proudly worn like a ‘badge of honour’ says Dr Lissa Rankin. In other words, success and stress automatically go hand in hand – implying the more stressed or ‘hectic’ you are, the more successful you are. Be careful of that belief and expectation – it is not true. Stress implies strain, resistance, force, exerting willpower, or a refusal to change or accept what is. In other words, you’re not ‘in flow’ and not going with the natural flow of life; instead you’re trying to swim upstream, hence the resultant stress. Living this way is not conducive to successful living; the consequences are both delusional and dire.

I love this word ‘impossible’. It means ‘I’m Possible’. In other words, within me are all possibilities so anything becomes possible – referring back to our innate wisdom where anything and everything becomes a possibility because we are drawing from an infinite resource, or a universal consciousness. When we are stressed, we automatically block solutions

from appearing spontaneously. This is why applying breathing and relaxation techniques to stressful situations yields profound results.

Conscious breathing refocuses the mind to the body, and the present moment. Relaxation is a simple process, but may not be easy to implement – a good example is meditation, which is a simple exercise but it isn’t easy to quieten a busy and stressed mind! I cover a variety of stress relief techniques in my book, Stress Gone! How to Identify and Reduce Stress Easily. These simple yet effective techniques can be used in any day-to-day stressful situation regardless of whether you are in a board meeting, giving a presentation, stuck in traffic, on the phone or during a heated argument.

When we are clear, focused, relaxed and totally congruent about what it is that we want, life usually flows easily and so does the success. The real issue is that most of us are not clear or congruent with what we want, and these conflicting states cause us to vacillate, with stress as the result. Don’t get me wrong, a degree of stress is a necessary ingredient for motivation and inspiration, particularly in order to go above and beyond a perceived limitation.

Essentially, personal developement and growth hinges upon one’s success (or failure) in handling stress and stressful situations. What one learns from these situations boils down to one simple thing; our attitude. Adopting a positive attitude, together with an awake, aware and open mindset will go a long way towards one’s progress and success in life. Right attitude determines right results, and contrary to popular belief, life is constantly supporting us by giving us opportunties to learn and grow. Stress is so often a gift in disguise, your attitude will determine whether or not you receive the gift, or miss out completely. As the saying goes, when life throws you lemons, make lemonade!

PROACTIVE PARENTING: THE IMPORTANCE OF PARENTS

AS ROLE MODELS By Nicoleen Davies, Director Life Talk Forum

When you hear someone say, “Your child is a mini-you” or “The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree” or “Like father, like son” – doesn’t that make you feel really proud? But, have you

ever actually thought, as a parent, about your impact as a role model, in your children’s lives?

Research indicates that children grow up to be a lot like their parents. Children, who live in homes where parents smoke are more likely to become smokers. The same applies to

other substances such as alcohol or drugs and even to domestic abuse – these are cycles that tend to repeat themselves from one generation to the next. Sadly too, parents with low self-esteem often raise children with low self-esteem.

On the flip-side, children who come from happy homes tend to be happy adults; when they are exposed to love, care and support growing up – they tend to demonstrate those same characteristics towards others.

ROLE MODELLINGBy definition, a role model is a person whose behaviour, example and success others admire and then want to emulate. From a very young age, our children do just that, they take their cues from us, watching our every move. Whether it be through direct interactions with us, or observing how we conduct ourselves, how we behave in certain situations, how we deal with stress or anxiety, and even how we love and treat those around us, our children learn from our examples and are very likely to follow in our footsteps. And role models aren’t just parents – they can be any significant adults in your children’s lives. That is something to be aware of – especially if that person doesn’t share your value system and you don’t want them influencing your children directly.

WHY IS THIS SO IMPORTANT?We all want to raise well-adjusted children we can be proud of. As they reach their teen years, we hope that they will become young people with the ability to make good decisions in the face of many challenges and temptations. As parents, we can directly influence this. As our children grow, our roles as parents also change, all the while presenting opportunities to integrate learning activities. It is really vital that we are aware and cognisant of the influence we are having on our children’s perceptions of acceptable and appropriate behaviour.

But, we also know it is impossible to be perfect all the time and in fact, it’s totally unrealistic. Allowing our children to see that parents and adults are also human, flawed and can make mistakes is really important. In these situations, how we deal with difficulties and how we recover are the real life lessons.

Be as aware as possible, in the presence of your children, of how you deal with disappointment or anger; the way you treat others in terms of honesty or respect, tolerance and kindness; and perhaps even the way you socialise (how much you drink, smoke, swear and behave). These are all aspects which can

fundamentally affect the young people you are raising. POSITIVE OUTCOMESDay-to-day situations make for wonderful active learning opportunities. These suggestions might be valuable to consider:

Show your child how to behave – there is no better way! Walk your talk and lead by example!

Discipline yourself – especially when children are around. That’s a tough one but it’s a reality. We can’t really expect our children to stay off their devices and communicate with us when we don’t do it ourselves. How often does your child try to get your attention but you are busy replying to messages or are on Facebook?

When it comes to decision-making, include your children in the discussion. Let them observe how you and your spouse discuss things and make decisions. If appropriate, you can even ask them what they think and guide them in this.

Be aware of what you say, especially in a more volatile situation. Try to control your anger and aggression. According to experts at the KidsHealth website, children who display aggressive behaviour often learnt this from their role models in the home environment.

With matters relating to tolerance, respect and kindness – they can learn those skills simply from the way you treat them and each other in the home. Do try to demonstrate this outside of the home – so that they know that other people also matter.

Actively decide on the positive aspects of life you would like to role model for your family. This could be diligence, happiness, compassion, patience, respect and even self-respect. You could consider monthly themes for the whole family to participate in, to actively encourage thinking about behaviour and its impact.

Live with positivity – it can be very energising.

So, despite the fact that our children may mimic some of our less-than-favourable traits, good parenting can go a very long way. It’s up to us as parents to break any negative cycles that may exist within our families and to raise strong, resilient children through effective parent role modelling.

Maybe this can be the real gift you give your children this coming year – the gift of good role models with sound values and positive behavioural traits. You can actually shape your children’s behaviour in doing so.

In parting, if you have a moment, watch the YouTube clip on this link – it really does say it all!

VONDI’SHolistic Pet NutritionV

ondi’s Holistic Pet Food is both appetising and safe, containing meat steamed at 72°C to kill pathogens while

retaining goodness. It is then blended with nutrient-packed RAW VEGETABLES and WHOLE GRAINS.

Vondi’s was developed by a nutritionist and veterinarian, and they remain true to their original formula, making their food certifi ed under Act 39 as a complete pet food.

Vondi’s is also well known for being a solution to itchy skin. Itching can be caused by cells INFLAMED by an improper pH balance, caused by TOO MUCH ACIDITY in food.

This is why Vondi’s is an ALKALINE-BASED DIET, to neutralise those high acid levels caused by too much meat, chemicals, preservatives and the simple carbohydrates found in commercial dog foods.

According to Chinese medicine, herbs can either warm or cool the body. This thinking has also been part of Western medicine for almost 2000 years. This is why Vondi’s uses only cooling herbs to soothe itchy skin.

Vondi’s is totally natural and preservative-free. Their cooking process is scientifi c. Grains are cooked slowly and for a long period and NEVER together with the meat. Veggies and herbs are blended RAW and FRESH.

Vondi’s Natural Frozen Food is available in Chicken, Beef, Mutton, Ostrich, Special Chicken and Special Ostrich – these special formulas are ideal for pets with severe skin irritations and allergies.

Vondi’s nutritional claims: All ingredients are fresh, free range and

organic, where possible. Grains are of top quality and come from

credible sources. Omegas come from pressed olive oil

and real animal fat and meat. Strictly no preservatives are used.

Preservatives have been proven to be harmful and may be the cause of many diseases.

No extrusion is used and therefore all nutrients are retained and absorbed.

Low cooking temperatures ensure that protein and enzymes are not denatured.

Vondi’s is a low carb, low calorie, low fat wet food diet and preservative free.

Vondi’s also has a range of Healthy Biscuits. These include:

Diatomaceous Earth Biscuits (for de-worming and parasite control)

Spirulina Biscuits (for immunity and wellbeing)

Coconut Oil Biscuits (for a glossy coat)

Rosehip and Devil’s Claw Biscuits (for arthritis)

Mint & Rooibos Biscuits (for itchy skin), and

Puppy Crunchies (with added whole egg).

Vondi’s Natural Frozen Foods and Health Biscuits now available from Shinga Pet at Waterfall Corner (010) 596 8934.
