The school is currently in a process of rebranding and sought community consultation to assist us in our drive to embed the school’s identity into the 21 st Century. The final results of the voting on the school logo which closed at 4:00pm on Wednesday 19 November 2014 are tabled as follows: Proposed logo: 394 votes (49.56%) Current logo: 401 votes (50.44%) Total number of votes: 795 There were 454 Facebook votes, 172 Website votes and 169 school registered votes. The school would like to thank everyone who participated in the community consultation process. We also learned some of the history related to the development of the school logo which had been previously lost. It is believed that the logo resulted from a competition in the 1940s and that Dinny Leathem was the winner of the competition and thereby the designer and creator of our school logo. As the school moves quickly towards its sesquicentennial or 150 th anniversary in 2017 it is important that we embed these historal landmarks in the annals of the school. SCHOOL LOGO Since the introduction of the PBL

band system, day one this term, we have seen an increase in positive behaviours displayed throughout our school by our students. The students are rewarded under the three PBL focus areas; Respectful, Responsible Learners by means of a teal band. Students acrew these bands for displaying positive behaviours during school. HOW DOES THE BAND SYSTEM WORK? When the students gain three teal bands they trade these for a pink band. The students then gain teal bands to continue trading up gain three pink bands. Once they have three pink bands the students trade up to Purple bands and receive a merit card for their continued efforts

Positive Behaviour for Learning

Our wonderful Respectful, Responsible Learners in K – 6 are already displaying arms loaded with teal, pink and purple bands. Congratulations to those students who are continually Respectful, Responsible Learners. To receive a band students must be in school uniform Monday - Thursday and on Friday in sports uniform. At the end of each term ALL bands, except Rainbow, must be handed in to be washed and ready to be distributed the next term. It is not financially viable to allow students to keep all the bands collected each term. In terms 1, 2 and 3 the Rainbow rewards day will be held on the Tuesday of the last week of each term and in Term 4 it will be held on the Tuesday of the second last week. Students are encouraged to trade their bands each day so we have a better turnover of bands, especially Teal bands. No more than 6 teal bands can be traded at each time ie 6 teal bands = 2 pink bands. Once a trade has been completed students must wait until the next trade time to exchange bands. A third pink, purple or yellow band cannot be traded immediately for the next level band but must be traded the following day. This allows students to wear the three bands of each colour to proudly display their achievements for a day before trading up. “Hat on, play on” With the approach of the warmer weather we will be again closely monitoring the wearing of hats for outdoor activities. Students without a school hat are required to sit under the shelter and are not permitted in the playground during breaks. Please take this opportunity to check your children’s hats for labels, size etc. New hats are available through the front office for $15 each. Presentation Night Our school’s very important night to congratulate and applaud our students is on Thursday 11 December at 7.00pm in the J B Renshaw Hall. All students must be in full school uniform. Everyone is very welcome to attend and enjoy a wonderful evening. Year 5 Raffle To assist with costs for the year 6 Celebration Dinner year 5 are holding a raffle. Each ticket costs $2 and the prize is a wonderful hamper of Christmas goodies. Year 5 students are selling tickets and asking for more donations of goods to overflow the hamper. We are very appreciative of the donations sent in so far.

Caves Continue to Captivate When students from years 7 to 9 science classes visited Wellington Caves last week they were able to explore a site that has contributed to the development of one of the most significant theories in modern science. The group of limestone caves 8km south of Wellington is internationally significant for being home to one of the most prolific deposits of marsupial fossil bones in Australia. Historical records suggest that the evidence presented by the fossils contributed to English scientist Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection. Back in the 1830’s samples of mega fauna fossils from the caves were sent to England by Surveyor General and explorer, Major Thomas Mitchell, where they came to the attention of Darwin. Science teacher Mr Selween Chandra says he found it “pretty exciting” to have such a rich source of biological and geological history located so close to Warren and easily accessible. “The students were fascinated by so much of what they saw, including the Alter Rock which is one of the world’s largest stalagmites, as well as casts of the extinct marsupial Diprotodon, the largest marsupial known to have existed and Australia’s largest meat-eating mammal, the Thylacoleo.” A restored one hundred years old phosphate mine was also of much interest. Mining started on the site in 1914 to meet the demand for phosphate for use as fertiliser in agriculture but was abandoned in 1918 due to poor quality and yield. Students were able to experience what it would have been like to work in an underground mine at the beginning of the last century. Few of the students had actually been to the caves prior to the excursion but all agreed they were well worth the trip, though one did later own up to being more than a little relieved not to have encountered any of the Bent-wing bats known to use the caves as a roosting site!

A chance to learn something new With retirement looming, John Wood says learning new skills so he has a hobby that will keep him busy is the reason he is undertaking industrial design classes at Warren Central School. For others it’s the chance to learn to use equipment correctly, to learn new skills to improve employment opportunities or simply to undertake a subject they were not able to do at school.

John is one of our adult learners taking up the opportunity to further their skills and in 2015 we will be once again offering places to members of the community in a number of our classes. Course offerings will depend on demand but at this stage there is a Ceramics and Visual Art (day class), Industrial Technology (night class), Hospitality (day class), Computing Applications (night class) and Adult Literacy/Numeracy (day class). The classes are open to anyone and no prior experience is required. Most courses run for two years. On completion of their course students receive the appropriate award or qualification from the Department of Education and Communities. This will generally be a Statement of Attainment which lists the areas of study that have been successfully completed. There is no tuition or enrolment charge for any of the subjects however there is a charge for the material/equipment that is used in some of the subjects. Some of the subjects also require special clothing to be worn. If you would like to express your interest or find out more you can contact the school’s office or Dianne Hamilton on 6847 4438. Subject syllabi may be viewed at http://www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/syllabus_hsc/ . Mrs M. Irving - Community Liaison

RIP “Gordon” 2003 - 2014 Sadly last week “Gordon” the Border Leicester ram from the school agricultural plot passed away. Gordon, as he was very affectionately known, was purchased in 2004 from th e Irving family at “Toucan” Warren. He was introduced into the school flock as the vital link for breeding prime lambs. Gordon was the sire of numerous lambs and was particularly successful with twin and triplets lambs frequently being produced. Most recently he was introduced to four new “Haddon Rig” ewes where he again demonstrated his breeding power with a lambing of 140%! Gordon was a particular favourite with Mr Hawkes who spoilt him with all manner of treats – oranges and sandwiches were his favourite! Although sometimes difficult to manage – he was a huge 123kg at his peak – he will be fondly remembered and missed by the agricultural students and staff of WCS.

Year 10 Work Placement

Last week K/1 Diamonds had the pleasure of having Paige Shepherd and Tinesha Darcy-Hutchinson doing work experience on our class. The girls showed lots of initiative and were more than willing to help with whatever was happening. We really enjoyed having the extra help in the classroom and playground. The girls are welcome back anytime. Thanks girls for a great week.

Emily, Teagan, Shauni, Simone and Paula were all lending a helping hand at their respective

businesses.
