“The group made its first visit to ‘t Slothuys in Spanbroek, in the north of Holland. We arrived on a bright sunny Sunday afternoon. On previous holidays we had always stayed in 4* accommodation, ’t Slothuys was an ex-nursing home and it came highly recommended as previous Jumbulance groups had stayed there. The accommodation was ideal for the disabled, each room consisted of a sitting room, a large bedroom with twin electric beds, a large wet room and smaller bath-room again large enough for a wheelchair with a toilet and sink. All rooms were on the ground floor which we appreciated. The staff made us very welcome and were eager to help. We had very mixed weather, summer sunshine, torrential rain and gale force winds. I had researched the area and with Les’s knowledge of the area we were able to choose

where to go on any particular day. We took a boat ride in heavy rain, some remained on deck unperturbed by the changing weather just glad to be on holiday. Holland had many hidden gems, we visited Harlingen crossing the Zuider Dam. Einerkusen we accessed by boat. Mid week we visited Amsterdam taking in the sites and some shopping ‘til they dropped. On Thursday we took a magical mystery tour to the clog and cheese factory which proved a great hit. We completed our week with a visit to Hoorne. Our

thanks as ever go to Les and Jim, they worked tirelessly throughout the week in making sure we had an enjoyable holiday.” Angela Kennedy

VOLUNTEER HELPERS

If you have previously travelled or would be interested in travelling on a Jumbulance as a volunteer helper and carer and find you are unable to join a local group for whatever reason then please contact the office as we have trips departing from all over the UK, all needing volunteers. We may be able to match you with a suitable group and would be happy to help arrange transport to and from the departure point. David Cotterrell is taking a group from Louth in Lincolnshire to Blackpool for a week’s holiday in June and is looking for additional help. He has offered financial assistance to anyone who might be interested.

Austria was the destination of the Border

Group this year which proved to be an

unforgettable 10 days in the beautiful Tyrol

region. After 18 months of planning the 20

strong group for the first time took the

overnight P&O ferry crossing from Hull to

Rotterdam, during which everyone enjoyed the

excellent facilities on board, including the

comfortable wheelchair-friendly cabins,

excellent food and lively evening entertainment.

The day after arriving the group took a cable car ride to the top of Mount Schmitten Hohe

from where they enjoyed the spectacular views and refreshments. The short journey to

Lake Konissee on the Monday saw the group taking a boat trip on the tranquil lake from

where they could see the Eagle’s Nest, Hitler’s retreat during the Second World War. The

evening brought the eagerly-anticipated ‘Do Something Night’ during which group members

entertained with song and verse. Tuesday the group enjoyed the magnificent scenery and

buildings of Salzburg, followed by a quiz in the evening, Wednesday was a free day for all

with a fancy dress party in the evening at which everyone had a great time. One of the

many highlights of the trip was Thursday’s expedition to the foothills of the Grossglockner

ice path where the group took a lunch-stop in glorious weather, before heading to Ferleiten

Wildlife Park where one VIP commented it had been 30 years since she had visited a zoo.

The group would like to thank the family Grisseman and all the staff at the Hubertus for

looking after them so well and giving them a ‘home from home’.

A POEM FROM Shirley Tomlinson, a traveller from LiverpoolA POEM FROM Shirley Tomlinson, a traveller from LiverpoolA POEM FROM Shirley Tomlinson, a traveller from LiverpoolA POEM FROM Shirley Tomlinson, a traveller from Liverpool

A Poem kindly sent to us by Shirley Tomlinson, a traveller from Liverpool

We all set off from Huddersfield one bright October day, plied with tea and coffee on a cunning little tray.

Then Margaret and her gallant crew served lovely salad lunch, and brought round tea and biscuits and sweets for us to crunch.

Then when we got to Dover we’d a nice hot meal as well, and I began to notice a distinctly belly swell I thought that I might loose some weight and shed my rolls of fat

but Margaret and her saboteurs had just put paid to that. The movement of the ferry boat seemed hardly to advance.

In fact we were surprised to find we’d reached the shores of France But that night, what a drama ….. John was missing from the bus

and people rushed around and searched creating lots of fuss. He wasn’t hiding in the loss, or on the luggage rack …..

Then Margaret gave a stern command, “You can’t go on! GO BACK!” So Jumbulance was turned around, Les took the wheel from Jim muttering,

“when I find the b….. I”ll tear him limb from limb”. And when at last we found John, somewhat shaken but not stirred,

we knew that we were dealing with a very wily bird He climbed on board the Jumbulance acknowledging his fame

then Janice found some handcuffs, lest he escape again

“From leaving Scunthorpe on 6th September to returning on 16th, everything was first class!! The drivers were a credit to the Trust, smart and immaculate at all times and nothing was too much trouble and the bus was always kept clean and tidy. Without their experience and knowledge we would not have seen so many lovely places. Having been to the Tyrol many times before, some of them were even new to me. Sailing from Hull, a first but it was great, P&O were very helpful and gave us lots of help both ways, nothing was too much trouble and we were given VIP treatment at all times both on and off the boat, the food was first class and entertainment excellent! This was our first trip to Albert’s new Hotel and on arrival Albert was there to meet us and welcomed us like long lost friends. The Hotel is lovely, the rooms are quiet big and all wheelchair friendly, some have showers, others baths, the swimming pool is very nice and again wheelchair friendly including larger wheelchairs. The food is really good and the staff are very nice. Once again, a great holiday enjoyed by everybody.” Cynthia Huby

As we neared our destination we piled bags in a heap to clear the bed space needed for folks to go to sleep

……..er……….. reallocation? drawing lots or lucky dip? I decided that it added an excitement to the trip. Would I p’raps get Margaret’s knickers, frilly lace and subtle pink?

Unlike my cotton stalwarts, well, it really makes you think. Would I spend a week in Roger’s shoes? Would I fit in Sheila’s bra?

Well I hope you will forgive me if you think I’ve gone too far. I’m going to stop my scribbling here, in case you’re getting bored and look out at the countryside as we trundle down to Lourdes

Lots of trips and lots of fun: wine, beer and gin and tonic—I never knew that Jumbos knew just how much to frolic We visited Hosanna House and looked around the shops,

then filled out bags with gifts for friends as if we’d never stop We took our coach on Tuesday to the City of the Poor, set in a truly lovely place …. An ever open door

Where those in any sort of pain who seek for solace, rest are given an abundant love as to an honoured guest. But watching wheelchairs pushed up hills, we happened just to glance

and Margaret B had pushed so hard, she’d even split her pants! And John too had some problems, how much more could he take and then he found that Michael had applied the wheelchair brake! Then the candle light procession…….a wondrous, moving sight, thousands of worldwide pilgrims, processing through the night.

A night we’ll all remember, yes the memory will remain of all our lovely Jumbo friends lit by a candle flame Wednesday … International Mass and photo’s by the score but then five minutes later the rain began to pour So afternoon at leisure, to sleep, chat, drink or read, and if you’re ambidextrous you could do all four at speed

Thursday … at the seaside but only the best for us, no fish and chips and stick of rock, we’re off to St Jean de Luz!

The eleventh of October, a time to celebrate, Andy’s ordered sunshine for Michael’s special date So happy birthday Michael, we wish you lots of fun, best wishes and much happiness, God Bless from everyone

And what a party was enjoyed, by Jumbos one and all The elegant dancing of Margaret and Maggie, held everyone in thrall

Rachel and Andy recited, Les tied two in a knot, Mac gave a poetic rendering, and then ...the singing spot … Father Richard sang (with gestures), Margaret G’s voice rang out clear,

will we see them next on the X-Factor when the series reappears? Then wheelchairs were all homeward bound when everyone was finished,

weaving a somewhat wayward route and still no care diminished. Our last night … presentation time to Rachel, Margaret, Mags and also Father Richard for ironing out all snags

And working so unceasingly to make our holiday, so very special in every kind of way So lots of love to all our friends and now I must get cracking, for we are off on Saturday and I haven’t done my packing.

Before we all departed Jeanette packed up with care but when asked “Where’s your Passport?”, she found it wasn’t there !

It wasn’t in her travel bag, it was difficult to trace but at last it was located at the bottom on her case ! Relief all round …. Her friends had feared, she’d have to stay behind so they’d all chipped in for a phrase book which I think was very kind.

However, I’ve no cause to feel full of efficiency, for when I opened up my bag I’d nicked the Hotel key ! When we go to Calais we were ordered off the bus to see if passport photos looked anything like us

And as we waited in the chill, two stately galleons danced and you will never see greater talent than this, the length and breadth of France

So if you go to Paris book seats for the Follies Bergere, for among the high kickers all flashing their knickers, our duo may be there …..

The customs then attempted to wake up one and all but Jim slept through the hullabaloo of this very early call When at last we go to Huddersfield, how sad it was to part,

but we’ll keep the folks of the Jumbulance forever in our hearts So thanks to you dear carers, Father Richard and all dear friends

And thanks to our wonderful drivers and here my saga ends!!

THE MIDITHE MIDITHE MIDITHE MIDI

“For our group travelling by Jumbulance was ideal. One VIP travelled in total

relaxation as she could use the bed to sleep on and everyone else enjoyed

being able to be themselves with people they knew. The holiday was a magical

experience. The Jumbulance staff and Disney staff gave us memories we will

not forget. Thank you!!”

Ann Cresswell, Group Leader from Blair House in Lincolnshire

2007 has been a great success for the Midi, taking groups for short holidays to Eurodisney, Bruges, Lytham St Annes and Llandudno and transporting the World Handcycling champions from Canterbury to Deal and Hyde Park as part of the Tour de France (left). We had several new bookings this year for long weekend breaks which all proved successful, enjoyed by all and demonstrated

the value of the flexibility offered by this particular Jumbulance and trailer. There were many day trips including Woburn, Southsea, Southend, Paradise Park, Slimbridge, Milton Keynes for a shopping trip, tours of London and the Christmas lights. All great fun and very memorable for those travelling. We also had the pleasure of collecting from Birmingham an elderly lady with her whole family, taking them to Llangollen where she had lived as a child then married. Her family wished her to see her childhood home as a birthday treat. Overlooking the beautiful river Dee and Steam Railway is where the family went for lunch. She travelled comfortably ensconced in a stretcher bed and on arrival transferred to her wheelchair. Her family were almost embarrassingly grateful to the Trust for making this trip possible.
