Taylor named semifinalist in U.S. Presidential Scholars Program
James Orv Taylor, a graduating senior at St. Marys High School, has been named one of 630 semifinalists in the 2018 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. The semifinalists were selected from nearly 5,300 candidates expected to graduate from U.S. high schools in the year 2018.Inclusion in the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, now in its 54th year, is one of the highest honors bestowed upon graduating high school seniors. Scholars are selected on the basis of superior academic and artistic achievements,
leadership qualities, strong character and involvement in community and school activities. The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964 by Executive Order of the President to recognize some of our nation’s most distinguished graduating seniors for their accomplishments in many areas: academic success, leadership, and service to school and community. It was expanded in 1979 to recognize students demonstrating exceptional scholarship and talent in the visual, creative, and performing arts. In 2015, the program was expanded once
again to recognize students who demonstrate ability and accomplishment in career and technical fields. Annually, up to 161 U.S. Presidential Scholars are chosen from among that year’s senior class, representing excellence in education and the promise of greatness in America’s youth. All scholars are invited to Washington, DC in June for the National Recognition Program, featuring various events and enrichment activities and culminating in the presentation of the Presidential Scholar Medallion during a White House-sponsored ceremony.

Black Panther
Black Panther
I recently watched Jumanji Welcome to the Jungle (and yes I know it’s not a new movie, but I didn’t have any internet to watch something new), which is a movie about four teenagers who all get detention and find an old video game during their punishment. When they start up the
game, they choose their characters. Once chosen, they are sucked into the game and are now living as the characters that they have chosen. Now the only way they can get out is by working together through all of the dangerous challenges to finish the game. The movie stars’ people such
as Karen Gillian, Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, and Nick Jonas. Overall the movie was pretty good. There were some cheesy moments, but the movie was actually really funny for the most part. I would recommend this movie to anyone that enjoys comedies or action movies.
In February, the movie Black Panther was released. This movie is a science fiction and action movie. The movie takes place in a nation called Wakanda, where T’Challa returns to after he hears about the death of his father. He then takes his place as King. It is then that T’Challa, Black Panther, must overcome the many obstacles that are threatening his title as king. He must fight for his kingdom when it is endangered by enemies. Black Panther must prove his strength to save his people. The actors
seemed very real throughout the movie. Some of the main actors are Chadwick Boseman and Michael B. Jordan. The storyline wasn’t very predictable, which created suspense. The scenes and lighting in the movie made most of the parts look really realistic. The songs played in the background of the movie became really popular was they were released. The songs featured popular artists like Kendrick Lamar, 2 Chainz, Future, the Weeknd and Travis Scott. I would watch this movie again and recommend it to teens and adults. I would rate this movie four out of five stars.

Track A strong showing in the relay events helped guided St. Marys High School’s girls’ track team to a fourth-place showing in the Class A, Region 1 Championships Chuck Schofield Memorial Sta-dium in Ellenboro. The Lady Devils placed sec-ond in three relay events
and third in another as they finished behind Wheeling Central. St. Marys also qualified nine times for the state meet in the open or individual events. Kylie Myers, Ci-ara Bennett and Marissa Cottrill a legs for the both 4 x 100 and the 4x 200.
St. Marys High School boys’ track team will have a full arsenal at its disposal when it travels to Charleston to defend Class A state championship. Four differ-ent athletes captured individual regional crowns for the Blue Devils. Dalton Hous-er made a statement in the 110-meter high hurdles with him time of 16.22 seconds allowed him to take the top prize in the event. Senior Brady Gorrell led the way as he dominated the distance events with a stunning first-place prize in the 1600 meter run and 3200 meter run. Fellow se-nior Walker Hashman posted a winning effort in the 800-meter run and finished
behind Gorrell for the second place prize. Sprinter Matt Eichhorn placed in two open events for St. Marys. He was sec-ond in the 200-meter dash and recorded a fourth place effort in the 100-meter dash. Zac Long (400-meter dash), Isaak Mooney (high jump) and Levi Britton (pole vault) all notched second-place fin-ishes and qualified for the state meet. St. Marys also punched its ticket to Charles-ton in four relays with a first-place finish in the 4x200 second place finishes in the 4x100 and 4x400 and a fourth place fin-ish in the 4x800.
Senior Walker Hash-man put forth a domina-tion performance and three other Blue Devils joined him on the all-conference squad as the St. Marys boys captured a runner-up showing in the LKC Track and Field Championships at Chuck Schofield Memo-rial Stadium. Hashman won individually for ti-tles in two events. Isaak Mooney, Matt Eich-horn and Dalton Houser also earned spots on the 15-person all-conference unit for the Blue Dev-ils. St. Marys entered
the meet ranked number one in the all state in Class A and was defend-ing LKC champion. The Bulldogs finished with 127.5 points while St. Marys was second with 90 points. St. Marys ran without one of its top performance sprinters, Zac Long who was side-lined with a hamstring injury. Brady Gorrell and Wyatt Shultz also added to St. Marys points to-tal. Gorrell was third in the 3200 meter run and Shultz placed fifth in pole vault
Jessy Higgins earned all-conference honors, and she received plenty of help from her teammates, as they scored top 5th the LKC. Higgins registered second, and third place finishes in a pair of dis-tance races. She was also legs on two different re-lays. Higgins strong ef-forts lifted the team to 4th place in the meet overall. Higgins was the story for Mrs. Cottrill to brag about. She ex-celled in 800-meter and 1600-meter runs with a second and third place finish respectively. She
also ran key legs for the 4x400 and 4x800. On the 4x400, Ciara Bennett, Marissa Cottrill, and Bralynn Davis accom-panied Jessica. On the 4x800, Kylie Myers, Em-ily Meeks, and Bralynn Davis helped Higgins for the long run. Cottrill, Davis, and Addie Furr placed individually to go to the State Meet. The 4x100 team consisted of Myers, Bennett, Cot-trill and Jaden Hatcher. The shuttle hurdles were Bennett, Paden Hatcher, Cottrill and Alexis Hash-man. The Williamstown

The Blue Devils finished the regular season with a 9-9 re-cord and faced Roane County in a LKC placement game. St. Marys became their sec-tional game Tuesday when it hosted the winner of an opening-round game be-tween Magnolia and Ritchie County. Cody Burkhammer limited the Red Devils to five hits while striking out eight and walking only one. Burk-hammer had a shut out going
until surrendering three runs in the top of the fifth inning. Jack Hadley, Jonathan Da-vis and James Burgess and drove in runs. Paden City led 8-5 after four innings of play and broke the contest open by putting eight runs on the scoreboard. Hadley started and suffered the loss for the Blue Devils who were led at the dish by a 2-for-2 prefor-mance by Brenden Fox
St. Marys rebounded from a disappointing start to the sectional tournament in a huge way. 2 days after fail-ing to win against Magnolia, the top seeded Blue Devils made a claim against Ritchie. Playing on the home turf, St. Marys was never challenged as the score was 12-2. The game was stopped in the 6th inning due to a 10 run. St. Marys poked the bear in the top of the first inning by scor-ing 2 runs there. Them, they scored 6 more just the inning
after that. The Blue Devils led 9-0 after three innings of play, and maintained that un-til the top of the 5th inning, the Rebels scored their only two points there. St. Marys scored 3 more runs in the bottom of the 6th frame. Ja-son Clayton was beneficial to the Devils as he picked up the wins off his offensive plays. Jack Hadley contributed by helping pitch the final 2 in-nings only allowing Magno-lia to hit twice.
A walk off single by Mahay-la Nichols was all St. Mary’s needed to defeat Caldwell. St. Marys won the game 5-4 after 7 innings. The fresh-
man pitcher had 7 strikeouts. At home plate, Laura Fetty was the leading batter who battled for runs.
St. Marys couldn’t get start-ed when the played Raven-swood. They had a rough time on both offense and defense. The Devils only managed 4 hits in games. In the first game, the final score
was 11-1. The second game led to 10-3 and the decision was given to the Red Devils for the win. The new overall record for the Blue Devils was 7-7.
It isn’t a great sign when you have as many errors as you do hits. This was the case for St. Marys as the top seeded Devils opened a sec-tional game against Magno-lia. They loosed to Magnolia with a score of 13-2. That set the new record for the season to 10-10. They then started
to play in the loser’s bracket and played Ritchie next. St. Marys couldn’t get anything going against Magnolia in a previous game. Devils only managed 3 hits, and they were all singles. Magnolia recorded 12 hits and took ad-vantage of the Devils errors.
The High School baseball season came to a screeching halt for St. Marys Friday af-ternoon as the Blue Devils were eliminated from the Class A, Region 1, Section 2 tournament with a 2-0 loss to Tyler. St. Marys could not solve Silver Knight ace Luke Daughtery as he struck out
four, and only allowed 3 hits in pitching a complete game shutout. Jack Hadley did his best to keep his team in the contest. Doubles off the bat from Jacob Hoyt, Jonathan Davis, and a single from Brendan Fox. Hadley pitched scoreless baseballs after 6th inning.
The Rebels ended St. Marys 5 game winning streak with a 12-2 victory. The Reb-els never trailed against St. Marys as the score in the end of the first inning was 4-0. St. Marys had a difficult time getting anywhere on the plate. The Devils made a dent in the bottom of the third in-
ning when they scored 2 runs making the score 6-2. Bren-dan Fox and Jason Clayton were stars among the Dev-ils as they made it on base 3 times. Clayton pitched 6 in-nings, and took the loss. Fox also worked on the mound for an inning.
The two teams split a LKC double header. Jack Hadley pitched the Devils to a 2-1 victory in the opener before Wirt came to bat and powered through with a 12-2 night-cap. The double header was home. They ran the match at the Pleasants County Parks’
Dave Wilson’s Field. Jack Hadley limited the Wirt county offense to just 5 hits, and 6 strikes. The Blue Dev-ils scored both of their runs in the fourth inning. Caleb Tay-lor, and Joey Sanchez struck the ball to allow their team-mates to run home.

Going undefeated during the first week of the Class A Region 1, Sec-tion 1 Softball Tournament the St. Marys conquered Paden City, Mag-nolia and Ritchie County to secure a spot in the sectional championship. The first three innings of the game were uneventful as both teams’ freshman pitchers dominated at the mound. Mahayla Nichols pitched the full seven innings for St. Marys with no batters walked and 14 strikeouts.
Dixie Price followed at the plate and struck out but, not before Nata-lie Payton stole home for the Lady Devils second run. Desiree Taylor being the final out of the top of the inning, the teams switched sides. As the team moved into the final two innings of play, Ritchie County at-tempted comeback. St. Marys ended up defeating Lady Rebels 2-1 and advanced the sectional champion-ship.
The Lady Devils entered the sec-tional tournament as the No. 5 seed, but capped their run to the sectional championships with a thrilling 3-1 extra inning win over Ritchie Coun-ty on the Lady Rebels home field. Freshman Mahayla Nichols was nearly untouchable on the mound as she limited Ritchie County to two hits in a complete-game masterpiece. Nichols struck out 12 and walked only two as St. Marys improves to
12-12 and advanced to next week’s regional tournament. After a base hit by Dixie Price moved Olivia De-Weese into scoring position, an RBI single by Desiree Taylor gave the Lady Devils an insurance run. Sum-mer Burkhammer finished with three hits to lead a 13-hit effort. As the game began, neither team was able to move around the bases regardless of a few good hits.
The Lady Devils played well in both of its games during the day, but suf-fered a pair of narrow losses. St. Marys fell to Clay-Battelle 7-4, in its opening game before dropping a 4-2 decision to Wirt County in its second game. Lara Fetty also had two hits for the Lady Devils, who fell behind 5-1 after two innings. In the second game, St. Marys trailed Wirt County
4-0 after four innings but sliced the deflect in half with two runs in the top fifth. Erica Payne was settled with the loss for the Lady Devils despite another string pitching ef-fort. Natalie Payton provided the of-fensive fireworks for St. Marys and Desiree Taylor enjoyed a multiple hit performance
St. Marys hosted Doddridge Coun-ty to Grape Island and defeated the Lady Bulldogs in a sixth inning. On the mound for St. Marys was Ma-hayla Nichols with 10 strikeouts throughout the game. The freshman pitcher was a force to reckon with as she struck out two batters in the top of the second inning. The third and fourth innings resulted in a rally once again by the Lady Devils as they scored three times in the bot-
tom of the third. At the plate for St. Marys were Natalie Payton, Anna Runnion and Sydni Hinton. Summer Burkhammer connected with the ball for a double and an RBI while Olivia DeWeese claimed two singles and an RBI for St. Marys. St. Marys took ninth place in the LKC after defeating Doddridge County with the record of 8-12. The Lady Devils traveled to Paden City to begin the sectional tournament
Doubleheaders against both teams Ravenswood and Frontier were on the itinerary for the St. Marys High School softball team last week. In the first game, Ravenswood took control in the first inning and did relinquish St. Marys as it went only one inning without scoring. Lara Fetty, Dixie Price and Erica Payne eaxh contributes an RBI to the three ones St Marys scored in the third and fifth innings. As the second game, started Mahayla Nichols was on the mound for St. Marys for five innings. St. Marys was able to take control, the Red Devils’ scoring bet-
ter this game. Ravenswood was un-able to score until the third inning with three runs while the Lady Blue Devils claimed two in the second. The Blue Devils traveled to frontier to compete against their rivals across the river. The doubleheaders resulted in two more loses for St. Marys. The first inning set the foundation for the ball game as Frontier scored seven Runs. Though behind eight runs, the Lady Blue Devils scored six runs. In the second game of the evening the Lady Cougars crossed the plate three times before St. Marys scored once.

As you graduate, we want to tell you how proud we are of your achievements. We know it hasn’t been easy for you being pulled
in so many directions by so many responsibilities in your life, but you’ve done it! You’ve held tightly to your dream and now it is no longer a dream, but a beautiful reality and a sign of a wonderful
tomorrow for you. We want to congratulate you and wish you a future that’s bright as this day and as full of hope as all of your
dreams.
