Springfield voters will have a chance to address both issues by voting “yes” August 7 in support of the renewal of the City’s 1/8-cent transportation sales tax. At its June 18 meeting, the Chamber Board of Directors endorsed continuation of this important program. The 1/8-cent sales tax originated in 1996 and has been re-approved by Springfield voters three times, with a four-year sunset clause on each renewal. The projects to be completed in the next four years will improve safety and traffic flow at several major interchanges and bridge locations throughout Springfield. If approved, the 1/8-cent sales tax will generate $4.5 million annually, to be allocated for the following: New Improvement Projects • Chestnut Expressway bridge over the BNSF railway west of U.S. 65 • New bridges with a Diverging Diamond Interchange at Battlefield Road & U.S.65 • Intersection improvements at Mt. Vernon Street & Orchard Crest Avenue Continuation Projects • Republic Road widening to five lanes from Scenic Avenue to Golden Avenue • Weaver Road widening to three lanes from Campbell Avenue to National Avenue Two bridges on Republic Road over James River Freeway City-wide Programs • Intelligent transportation system and signal system improvements • Turning lane improvements Bridge replacements at various locations Major street resurfacing and rehabilitation Alternative transportation (pedestrian, bicycle and transit) A key aspect of this program is how it uses City funds to match State and County funds as a means to accelerate construction on these high-priority transportation projects, which were chosen through a process that included significant public input. The City of Springfield has produced positive results and shown great accountability since the initial passage of the 1/8-cent trans- portation sales tax in 1996. This renewal will allow the infrastructure improvements to continue for another four years, with a specific plan of funding commitments identified. Businesses will benefit because better roads make the transport of goods and people safer and more efficient. Improving the local transportation system also benefits our quality of life, resulting in emissions reductions, reduced fuel costs, improved vehicle maintenance, and quicker access to vital services such as healthcare. In other action, the board heard a report from Gary Powell (Husch Blackwell, LLP), chairman of the Local Issues Public Policy Task Force, with an endorsement recommendation on the 1/8-cent transpor-tation sales tax renewal (see separate story on page 1). The Chamber board approved the recommendation to endorse the issue and also voted to provide campaign man-agement support for the election issue. Laura Ward (Webster University) and Matt Russell (The Law Offices of Matthew Russell), the current and incoming presi-dents of Leadership Springfield, provided the Chamber board with an update on recent activities and the 2012 - 2013 goals of Leadership Springfield. Springf ield’s fabric wonderland In the world of upholstery, quilting, and all around decorating, F.M. Store of Springfield has been providing its customers with the largest selection of fabric and trim for over 60 years. Todd Arbeitman, who owns the fabric store just off Sunshine, claims that “once you come in the door you’re blown away.” Arbeitman says what sets F.M. apart from all of its competitors is the excellent service as well as the low prices. “Our customers come to us from everywhere because of our low prices and good service. We are considered that diamond in the rough or Springfield’s best kept secret.” In the past years F.M.’s “best kept secret” status has grown so much to the point that Arbeitman has recently purchased land just off Fremont Street only half a mile away from the original store in order to make room for the growing demand. “We have more square footage and a much bigger park-ing lot to accommodate our customers. We plan on being open around the beginning or middle of September.” Be sure to check out F.M. for all your decorating needs. The store is located at 1368 E. Sunshine, approximately a ¼-mile east of the National and Sunshine intersection.

On June 7, The Network celebrated its fifth anniversary with a special celebra-tion at Wellington Place in downtown Springfield. With more than 100 young professionals and community leaders in attendance, The Network reflected on its mission of engaging, attracting and retaining young professionals, recognized previous chairmen, and honored out-standing members with the first Young Professional of the Year Award. Brad Erwin, chairman of The Network and owner of Paragon Architecture, served as emcee of the celebration, discussing the organization’s role in fostering leaders and recounting a personal story of how The Network impacted his professional success. Jim Anderson, Chamber president, reflected on the initial skepticism the Chamber encountered when considering a young professionals group, but how vital The Network has become in serving as the voice of young professionals in Springfield’s business community. The Young Professional of the Year

Award was established to recognize the outstanding professional leadership and community, civic and philanthropic involvement of Network members. At the anniversary celebration, The Network announced Teresa Coyan, CoxHealth Network, as the 2012 Young Professional of the Year. Coyan is a member of Junior League, a recent graduate of Leadership Springfield, and a volunteer with Ozarks Food Harvest, Team World Vision, Habitat for Humanity, and the American Cancer

Society. In 2010, Coyan founded Cox-Health Young Professionals (CYP) to help employees connect with their peers, the organization’s administration and the community at large. Parker McKenna, director of human resources for Springfield Public Schools, and David Ross, director of operations for Morelock-Ross Builders, were also finalists for the award and were recognized during the anniversary celebration.

On June 20, the Chamber led a delegation of 29 people on a day trip to the U.S. Army’s Maneuver Support Center of Excellence at Fort Leonard Wood. Participants heard a briefing from Fort Wood’s Commanding General Mark W. Yenter, toured the military base, and learned about the training programs conducted there. Economic development and business opportunities were discussed with procurement officials and leaders of the Leonard Wood Institute. The visit also provided an opportunity to expand the relationship between Springfield and Fort Leonard Wood. The Chamber signed an Army Community Covenant with Fort Leonard Wood in 2009 that pledged Springfield’s support for U.S. Army soldiers and their families. For more information on the Fort Leonard Wood visit, please contact Emily Denniston at 862-5567.
