Becky MaguraReceives the PBS

Development Professional of the Year Award

In 2006, she became the station General Manager and CEO. Magura continues to give back to public media and has served two terms on the PBS Board of Directors, where she was Chair of the PBS Interconnection Committee. She also served as Chair of the NETA Board of Directors.

WYNONNA JUDD: CONCERT AT MY PLACE had its debut at a new podcast WCTE is producing in partnership with Cookeville Creative. The podcast, BEHIND THE SCENES: STORIES FROM YOUR FAVORITE PBS SHOWS, is hosted by Hal Harder (editor of Close-up) and me, Becky Magura!  Cookeville Creative’s Luke Ramey is our producer, and WCTE’s Bobby Adams is our distribution manager.

Wynonna and her husband, Cactus Moser, came across in our Zoom interview as personable, gracious, and very much committed to each other. Their love of classic country music was evident, as was the joy that their latest show has found its place with PBS!

All of this is part of the new digital strategy at WCTE under the direction of station manager Avery Hutchins.  We recognize that our audiences are gaining more sophistication with how and where they consume content; therefore, WCTE is following the lead of PBS to be wherever and whenever our viewers / listeners want to connect.

This new endeavor is so much fun!  So far, Hal and I have had a chance to visit with four national and international guests to find out more about some of the most exciting new shows coming from PBS.  In addition to WYNONNA JUDD: CONCERT AT MY PLACE, we took a look at THE BATMAN OF MEXICO from NATURE, THE MYSTERIES OF MENTAL ILLNESS, and the return of a PBS iconic Civil Rights series, EYES ON THE PRIZE.

I hope you will take advantage of all of the wonderful content coming your way from PBS and right here at home, including this new podcast!  Look for it on wcte.org, the WCTE app, and wherever you listen to your favorite podcasts (including iTunes, Pandora, Spotify, Vurbl, Amazon Music, iHeartRadio, and Google Podcasts). It is also featuredon WCTE on the Radio, Saturday mornings at 9pm.THE HUB, 107.7FM.   As always, thank you for your continued support, including our most recent fundraiser, WCTE’s Great TV Auction!  You make the difference in our ability to serve our region of Central Tennessee and for that I am most grateful.  Have a great summer!

OUR NEW PODCAST: BEHIND THE SCENES

For 39 years, Becky Magura has served as an inspirational leader and critical member of the WCTE team. She has held various roles within WCTE working across the areas of production, educational outreach and management. Magura launched a fundraiser in 1983 that helped to keep WCTE on air. The fundraiser (Great TV Auction) is still held each year and is the station’s largest single fundraising event.

“We applaud Becky and Maura (PBS So Cal) for their extraordinary dedication, passion and leadership to their stations and communities,” said PBS President and CEO Paula Kerger. “This award represents the highest level of professional achievement in the public broadcasting development community, and we are thrilled to recognize their contributions.”

PBS has named WCTE PBS CEO Becky Magura as one of the two recipients of the 2021 C. Scott Elliott Development Professional of the Year Award. The award was established in 1990 in memory of Scott Elliott, who raised more than $100 million for PBS member stations in Detroit, Buffalo and Cincinnati over the course of his career and was a standard bearer for integrity and professionalism in public media development.

WCTE PBS is proud to welcome our new Development and Marketing Director, Susan Luna-Hazlewood. Susan started in May and is responsible for overseeing and managing fundraising and coordinating promotion and station marketing.  As a nonprofit organization, WCTE relies on monetary support from public and private entities, foundations, and individuals to fulfill our mission.

Susan grew up in Cookeville and studied Psychology at Tennessee Tech. She went on to the College of Charleston and earned a Master of Public Administration, a Graduate Certificate in Arts Management and a Certificate in Nonprofit Fundraising. She is a Certified Fundraising Executive.

No stranger to the nonprofit world, Susan has worked for the Bryan Symphony Orchestra, the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, and the Tennessee Performing Arts Center.

“I have spent my career working in the nonprofit field,” Susan said. “I have worked for organizations that are smaller than WCTE and organizations that are larger in terms of scope and budget, both in Cookeville and in other cities and states. I think that my fundrais-ing and nonprofit knowledge and experience combined with my

Cookeville upbringing give me a unique approach to this role.”

What brought her back to Cookeville?

“Cookeville is my home. I can’t seem to stay away. I love this community. I am so excited to be here and to get involved in the community again. Growing up in Cookeville, I had so many great experiences and have wonderful memories. Not only did I want my daughter to have those opportunities, but I wanted her to be closer to her grand-parents and to my sister’s son, who is 5 months older.”

Susan has “a wonderful and supportive husband, Mike Hazlewood, and a two-year old daughter. We also have a cat and hope to add a dog to our family soon.”

So how’s it going so far?

“It is going great!  I started 2 weeks before our biggest fundraiser, The Great TV Auction, so I just had to jump right in and get started. Now that the Auction is over, I hope I will be able to unpack a few boxes and actually get settled into my new office.”

He was the most famous athlete of his time, whose stunning triumph at the 1936 Olympic Games captivated the world, even as it infuriated the Nazis. Despite the racial slurs he endured, his grace and athleticism rallied crowds around the world. Yet when the four-time Olympic gold medalist returned home, he couldn’t even ride in the front of a bus.

JESSE OWENS is the story of the 22-year-old son of a sharecropper who triumphed over adversity to become a hero andworld champion. But his story is also about the elusive, fleeting quality of fame and the way Americans idolize athletes when they suit our purpose and forget them once they don’t.

Our plan is to partner with three local elementary schools to provide students with access to the WCTE PBS Kids channel by providing them with indoor antennas.

According to research, educational television, such as PBS, engages and motivates children to learn. PBS is ranked #1 in reaching children ages 2–8 in lower-income and minority communities. This grant will help support our mission to support lifelong learning in our region.

WCTE is grateful for this generous grant from the Dollar General Foundation and its support of our initiative.

WCTE is proud to announce that we are one of the recipients of the Dollar General Literacy Foundation grant to fund our Lifelong Learning initiative.

In June, we held our largest fundraiser, the WCTE PBS Great TV Auction. This year, the Auction had a pirate theme. After 13 days of

an online auction and 5 nights of live TV showcases, the station raised $78,306.19!

Thank you! Money raised from the Great TV Auction helps support WCTE’s programming and education initiatives. This year, we had over 900 items donated from generous businesses and individuals. There were a total of 6,327 bids placed on items.

We are incredibly thankful for all of the sponsors, donors, auction hosts, auctioneers, volunteers, and bidders. You are the heart of the Great TV Auction!

Tuesday, August 3 – 9pm

June 22, 1938. Though the Great Depression rages and war looms, the eyes of the world are on Yankee Stadi-um in New York where German Max Schmeling and American Joe Louis are squaring off for the heavyweight championship of the world. More than 90,000 people crowd the stadium to watch the encounter, and millions more around the world — the largest radio audience in history — listen to what one commentator would call “two minutes and four seconds of murder.”

The pressure on each fighter is enormous. Louis is not only fighting for the honor of the country; he is quite literally holding the hopes of all African Americans. For Schmeling, the fight will be a demonstration of Hitler’s racial theories; should he lose, many fear what could happen to him. Theirs was a rivalry that would draw in two nations inching closer to war, and take the measure of two men who had been fighting all their lives.

"Often individuals become symbols of larger ideas and regimes. This was no less true in 1938, on the eve of World War II," said the film's director, Barak Goodman.

The two fighters met for the first time in Yankee Stadium in 1936. Louis, whose rise to the top of the heavyweight ranks was accomplished with unprecedented speed and brilliance, was the prohibitive favorite, so much so that not even the Nazi government thought Schmeling, with an up-and-down career in the ring, had a chance. Only Max himself was confident, believing that he had spotted a tiny flaw in Louis’ overwhelming attack.

THE FIGHT explores the 1938 heavyweight bout and finds two men who, in the shadow of war, became reluctant symbols of equality and supremacy, democracy and fascism.

LUCY WORSLEY’S ROYAL MYTHS & SECRETS

Join beloved royal historian Lucy Worsley on a journey to sort out fact from fiction about tumultuous times when radicalism and rebellion threatened Europe’s monarchies. From political earthquakes to a “mad” king, from the Tower of London to the streets of Moscow, Lucy reveals that royal history isn’t always what it seems.

In the continuing series, Lucy examines three pivotal historic periods, uncovering the artworks and artifacts that monarchs used to enhance their power and prestige, and the attempts, often successful, to bring them down. Featuring interviews with experts and authors, who uncover long-held myths and shine light on the exagger-ations, the series reveals the lesser-known stories behind three historical moments, and how the use of “spin” by the powerful has long preceded our modern era.

Henry VIII’s Reformation (Sunday, August 29)Was Henry VIII’s desire to divorce Catherine of Aragon and marry Anne Boleyn the real reason for England’s split from Catholic Europe? Or was a secret political agenda at work?

George IV and The Regency (Sunday, September 5)The Regency Era, thought of as genteel and well-ordered, full of beautiful buildings and Jane Austen romance, was actually an age of revolution. Lucy examines the so-called “madness” of King George III and how it threatened the British throne.

The Russian Revolution (Sunday, September 12)Contrary to the oft-told story of the Russian Revolution—that Lenin and the Bolsheviks swept the Czar from power in October 1917 and Communism was born—a group of women workers actually started the revolution in Feb-ruary 1917. The Czar, forced to abdicate long before the Bolsheviks took control, was betrayed by his cousin, King George V, who opposed the British government’s offer of asylum, which would have saved the Czar and his family.

FRIDAYS, JULY 16 – AUGUST 13

MUSIC THROUGH THE LENS

A Six-Part Series That Explores the Thrilling World of Music Photography!

ICON: MUSIC THROUGH THE LENS follows the fascinating lives and often wild experiences of the artists who documented popular music in images, from the earliest darkrooms to the fast-evolving digital landscapes of the present day. Featuring irreverent interviews with some of the most famous music photographers, musicians, gallerists, music journalists and social commentators, the film is an eye-opening thrill ride that captures what it was like on both sides of the camera when the most recognizable images in history were taken. Viewers will learn about the origins of these enduring, iconic images and the future of music photography.

Friday, July 16 at 8pm – ON CAMERA What makes an image iconic? ON CAMERA explores how photographic images of Snoop Dogg, Bob Dylan and Madonna influence perceptions and how they communicate, through themes of interaction, technical skill, occasional luck and cultural impact. The episode goes back to Robert Johnson to find the genesis of music photographs that demonstrate the incredible power of a frozen moment in time.

Friday, July 23 at 8pm – ON THE ROADOn stage, backstage, on the tour bus—from the earliest days of live performance to the modern day, visually striking live music photographs have captured moments of pure magic and created era-defining imagery. ON THE ROAD features touring stories from early trailblazers who went on the road with artists such as Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, The Rolling Stones and The Who, mixed with tales from the punk era of CGBGs, the Clash and the Sex Pistols.

Friday, July 30 at 8pm – ON THE RECORDThe photography of record sleeves from jazz and early rock ’n’ roll is analyzed and explored, from the Beatles and Pink Floyd to the highly stylized and conceptual imagery on albums by Blur and Dizzee Rascal. Themes of nostalgia, resonance and asso-ciation run through the superb stories of classic album covers by the Jam, Lou Reed, Thin Lizzy, Bruce Springsteen, Iggy Pop, Joy Division and Crosby Stills and Nash. Highlights include Lynn Goldsmith on Patti Smith’s Horses, Jonathan Mannion on Jay-Z and DMX, and Elliott Landy on Bob Dylan’s Nashville Skyline.

Friday, August 6 at 8pm – ON THE COVERMusic magazines played a pivotal role in elevating music photography to iconic status, providing a visual context for some of the world’s greatest bands and their music. ON THE COVER explores the legacy of the early covers of Rolling Stone, Creem, NME, Mojo and Q. Journalists, musicians and publicists discuss the enduring appeal and importance of the printed page, with music photographers who shot many of the most iconic front covers telling some touching, scandalous and never-heard-before stories about these images. Highlights include Chalkie Davies’ story of how Elton John hoped to use an NME magazine cover to come out, a young Michael Jackson, Mick Jagger with a leopard and the Stone Roses with a lot of paint.

Friday, August 13 at 8pm – ON THE WALL The transition of music photography from being considered disposable to a highly collectable and valuable art form is examined by gallerists, publishers, art experts and featured photographers whose body of work now hangs on the walls of the world’s most revered institutions. Tracing the journey from the early days of low-paid assignments to the first gallery exhibitions of music photography and expensive coffee table books, ultimately arriving at individual prints now selling for six and even seven figures, ON THE WALL offers insight into this relatively new industry, exploring the relationship between art and commerce. Highlights include the section on Abbey Road - the “Holy Grail” of music photographs - Bruce Talamon on Miles Davis and how he got his Taschen book deal, Chris Floyd on waiting all day for the “real’ Paul McCartney, Jill Furmanovsky on her profile of a shy Charlie Watts and Bob Gruen on getting a surprise call from the UK’s National Portrait Gallery.

Friday, August 13 at 9pm – ON THE NETWhere does music photography sit in the contemporary popular culture landscape? The seismic switch from analogue to digital is discussed alongside the rise and influence of social media. ON THE NET ends the series in seeking, through the next generation of music photographers, whether music photography still has a role to play—does it still carry the same importance, and who are the new standard bearers of the profession?
