From July to September, we have lined up a few exciting short trips overseas trips for you. Look out for a 1-day Durian Trip to Johor Bahru on Saturday 13th July 2019, a 3D2N Genting Trip from Friday 9th to Sunday 11th August 2019 and a 2D1N Bentong Tour on Saturday 24th & Sunday 25th August 2019. Register early for a relaxing getaway with your family and friends, and have some fun bonding time.

I am pleased to announce that ACC and OCC Social & Recreation (S&R) teams have merged from May 2019 onwards. With this merger, ACC members will get to take part in a greater variety of social events at the same price as OCC members. We hope to encourage enthusiastic participation and also build closer ties with our Sister Club. Along with this initiative, both Clubs are also introducing a new joint “Care Interest Group”. Members can join this interest group as volunteers and participate in meaningful events to give back to our community, thereby cultivating a more caring and inclusive society.

Before I sign off, I would like to congratulate Mr. Chong Kee Hiong, Director of Pasir Ris Resort Pte Ltd, for being conferred the prestigious ‘May Day Awards 2019: Meritorious Award’ in recognition of his significant contributions to the Labour Movement.

Greetings from Sunny Aranda!

How time flies; it’s already the second half of 2019!

We commenced repainting, water proofing and roof repair work to renew and enhance the Club premises, on 3rd June 2019. The project is progressing well and we target to complete it by October 2019. We will do our best to minimise any noise disruption and inconvenience and would like to thank you for your patience during this upgrading period.

I am pleased to update that with effect from 1st July 2019, members will get to enjoy 20% discount for purchase of all categories of Wild Wild Wet tickets when you present your ACC membership card. This offer is specially extended to all members by NTUC Club, Downtown East. We hope that our continuous efforts to enhance your membership privileges will make your Club experience an even more enjoyable one.

Our annual signature run event – Aranda May Day Run 2019 concluded on 25th May 2019 with great success as 103 runners conquered 5.5km at Pasir Ris Park. Congratulations to all the winners and thank you for the overwhelming response received for this year’s run! We look forward to your enthusiastic participation again in 2020.

The Club’s Sports Interest Groups are also going strong in 2019. A total of 108 bowlers are getting ready to battle it out at the 6th ACC & OCC Bowling Championship on Sunday 14th July 2019, while our runners from the Running Interest Group are looking forward to a good night race on the golf courses at OCC’s annual Nee Soon FUNtARTstic 3Ten Run on Saturday 27th July 2019. Do show your support and cheer them on at these events!

Our members are not only sporty; they also have a big heart for the community. Our cyclists from GP Riders will continue to take part in the annual ‘Ride-For-Rations 2019’ fundraising event from Friday 23rd to Sunday 25th August 2019, where they will cover an arduous 264km from Malacca to Batu Pahat, before cycling back to Singapore. As they say, when the going gets tough, the tough gets going – especially when it is to help the less fortunate. We wish them all the best!

The Battle of Opium Hill at Pasir Panjang was one of the fiercest battles that took place in Singapore during World War II. Take a leisure afternoon ramble around the forest of Opium Hill with us and experience what the invading Japanese soldiers went through as they fought their way uphill against a brave but heavily outnumbered troop of the 1st Malay Regiment. It is rumoured that this hill is still haunted by the spirits of

soldiers who have lost their lives. As part of the trek’s highlights, you will get to admire the flora in the area as well as the Canopy Walkway, before we end our day at the Reflections of Bukit Chandu.

Explore the Rail Corridor all the way from Kranji to Bukit Timah. Our trekking trail, which used to be along the tracks of the Malayan Railway, will bring us through secondary forests, railway bridges and various townships. Along the way, we will get acquainted with the flora and fauna that forms part of the scenery. Gather your friends and family and have fun with nature!

2D1N Bentong Tour

True adventure seekers will know the beauty and thrills that await at Bentong, Pahang in Malaysia. This trip brings adventurers to Chamang Waterfall, a majestic waterfall that appears to burst out from the mountains and into a fast-moving river – perfect for picnics and dips in the water.

There are also opportunities to explore various farms, including those that specialise in goats, prawns, fishes and vegetables. Our group will also visit local Tofu Puff and Hakka Kuih factories as well. Reserve your seat early to avoid disappointment!

Gathering at Orchid Bowl @ OCC, ACC and OCC bowling enthusiasts put their bowling skills to the test as they competed for the top three placings. Strong bonds were also fostered among the members as they brushed up on their competitive skills in these monthly medal events. Congratulations to all winning bowlers!

A total of 8 ACC and 12 OCC members participated as a team in the 25th Adult Inter-Club Bowling Mixed League, with OCC hosting the final game of Round 1. With a buffet dinner to start off the night, everyone was energised and geared up for the game. The match ensued after the bowlers had their practice rolls, and a great fight was put up for the night. We wish all bowlers the best of luck for subsequent games!

Two flights of our golfers took part in the monthly OCC-U Golf 9-Hole Night Series held at OCC. Everyone had a great time!

Entering its fifth year, the Club’s annual run event, Aranda May Day Run, saw an overwhelming response of 103 participants challenging themselves to a 5.5km run at Pasir Ris Park. Energised runners were raring to go as they waited for the flag-off in the morning by GM, Ms. Toh Poh Kuan. Racing their way to the finish line with unbridled enthusiasm, the runners were rewarded with refreshments at Ban Heng Seafood Paradise @ Aranda when the run concluded. Race winners and lucky draw prize winners were also honoured during the prize presentation. ‘Thank you’ to all participants and volunteers who made this event a success! See you again next year!

Chinese New Year BazaarSaturday, 19 January 2019It was a bustling Chinese New Year at the Club as members got to sample and grab good deals at the annual CNY Bazaar, with booths selling various homemade goodies, decorations, accessories, and apparels. Everyone was in full celebration mode for the festive occasion!

Members jumped at the opportunity for a relaxing shopping spree at Batam to pick up festive goodies. Everyone also got to do some sightseeing, savour scrumptious local food and enjoyed a complimentary massage to relieve their tired bodies from all that shopping!

It was a sweaty but fun day as participants got moving at a fruitful Zumba trial lesson. Everyone had a great time mingling and making friends with other active like-minded people, while experiencing what this workout is all about.

Who knew that something as small and simple as a button can form a masterpiece of its own? Arty kids had a crafty session of creating beautiful art pieces using unwanted buttons and acrylic paints, and everyone was all smiles as they held up their finished artworks with pride.

1D Kulai Hakka Village Tour

Saturday to Tuesday, 16 to 19 March 2019

Thirteen ACC and OCC members took a one-day trip to Kulai, a village in Malaysia, where they learnt more about the Kulai heritage and history at the Hepo Descendent Museum. Immersing in the rich Hakka culture, everyone had a taste of authentic Hakka delicacies before returning to Singapore with satisfied bellies!

Flying off to the idyllic town of Khao Yai, 18 members experienced another side of Thailand far away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Members had the chance to visit The Bloom, the largest flower garden in Thailand, Palio Village, a Tuscan-themed village with lots of greenery, and PB Valley Winery. The trip then ended with some therapeutic shopping in Bangkok. It was definitely a relaxing getaway for all!

Members embarked on a mission to locate iconic art murals and discover the interesting history and stories behind each location as they trekked through the heartlands of Singapore in the Everton and Tiong Bahru areas. What a rewarding experience!

The kids had a lovely afternoon showcasing their creativity as they decorated and coloured their very own Easter eggs with different craft materials. Nothing beats giving children the freedom to explore art on a weekend!

Guitar & Piano Trial LessonSunday, 14 April 2019When you have passion and a good instructor to guide you along, nothing is as tough as it seems to be. Members who have the interest in playing guitar and piano joined in for a trial lesson and got to learn the basics of playing these instruments. It was a productive day for all as they basked in a music-filled atmosphere.

2D1N Melaka TripSaturday & Sunday, 20 & 21 April 2019A short weekend getaway to Melaka saw members venturing on a heritage tour to various attractions like the Stadthuys, St. Paul’s Church, Christ Church and many others. Strolling through the famous Jonker Street Night Market was another experience in ittself as the street came alive at night with a flurry of activities and stalls selling an array of local treats and souvenirs. All the members had a great trip in this city that exudes charm!

Members made the wise choice by taking a proactive approach to care for their health as they sat in for an engaging talk. Everyone gained an insightful understanding of nutritional immunology and how to live a healthy lifestyle, and learnt what superfoods can build up their body’s immune system. Prevention is always better than cure! All in all, it was an interesting session which benefited members immensely.

Eight ACC and OCC staff together with 13 volunteers from “Joy-On-the-Go” church group made a trip to Apex Harmony Home and interacted with residents of the Apex Harmony Lodge (AHL). Singing along to songs and playing games with the elderly, everyone had a meaning afternoon bringing joy to the elderly and making a difference in their lives. We definitely look forward to our next visit to AHL as well as other opportunities to volunteer for a worthy cause!
