Total VictoryThis Aug. 14 will be the 70th
anniversary of the celebration ofTotal Victory in 1945. Thinkabout where you were at thattime... It is hard for mygeneration to imagine what thatfeeling was, but I would guess itwas like a giant cloud liftingfrom over your heads, and thesun coming out to shine brightlyon your lives. Chris Welch and Iare working on a specialcelebration on that day youdont want to miss!
I suppose we seldom think ofwhat it was like on the otherside. On an island near Okinawaa teenage boy named Kinjo wasassigned the gruesomeresponsibility of making surenone of their people survived tobe captives of the United States. In their culture it is morehonorable to die than to becaptured. One of his peers cameover the hill just before he tookhis own life and said, Lets stopall of the killing, and as ithappened, they did. This wordspread, saving many lives onthe island.
Kinjo and his friends stillfeared being captured by theAmericans, so they hid andraided supplies of the US troopsfor their food.
They were eventually capturedand put into the brig. After twoweeks for an interpreter toarrive, Kinjo and hiscompanions feared for theirlives. When the interpreterquestioned them, Kinjo asked,When are you going to kill us?The interpreter assured themthat they were not going to bekilled, but helped, with food, with finding their families, andreestablishing the community.Kinjo was totally surprised bythe mercy of his captors andsaid, I guess my Japanesephilosophy has failed me. Notlong after, Kinjo was the firstperson to be baptized in aDisciples of Christ missionfounded on Okinawa, and hebecame a great leader in thecongregation.
Total Victory means a lotmore than winning a war. It alsomeans winning the peace afterthe guns fall silent. Some of themost amazing work of this timewas done in the rebuilding ofcountries that had just beendefeated. The work of GeneralGeorge Marshall in Germany, and General Douglas MacArthurin Japan, went a long way toaccomplishing that task, and attimes it was an expression oflove for the enemy. Wheneverone of our occupying forces gavea piece of candy or gum to ayoung resident, they made afriend forever. Total Victory isworking together with Him tomake friends of all nations.
Happy Fourth of July! Brad
