JULY NEWSLETTER July 3, 2017 Our Website: www.oncjc.org President’s Letter to Membership PREZ SEZ’--- HAPPY SUMMER As July begins the second half of summer, ONCJC continues with the second half of our 20 th Anniversary celebration. Over this 20 years, many people have joined our club and have enjoyed the many benefits that have been offered. I would like to take this opportunity to recognize several people who have been in it “for the long haul!” The following members joined during the first 5 years and are still current active members of our club: (LM)—Lifetime members Kap & Lou Chermak Diana & Jack Williamson Barbara Bennett Ted & Diane Mosko Chuck Magda Lee Ferry (LM) Fred Standridge Dave & Nancy Wilson Joanne & Bob Folatko Nick & Sue Godzinski Wanda Kyser Bill & Roberta Robinson Jerry Galas Bob Marx Dan Clancy (LM) Frieda Ballon (LM) George & Esther Makar (LM) These are the people who served on the committees formed, cooked for the events, decorated and cleaned up, advertised, did dance demos, developed our song play list, and worked very hard to give our club the strong foundation on which we stand. So if you happen to see one of them, be sure to say “Thank You” for all they have done. As I gathered this information from our archives, I apologize if I have omitted anyone. Our celebration continues this month with our yummy Ice Cream Social, July 5, hosted by Marlene and Cecil Cook. A sale of gently used dance shoes and apparel will be conducted that evening. To make things easier for Joyce Smolen, who is coordinating this event, please pin an envelope labeled with your name, amount you are asking, and the size to the item for sale. Anniversary club shirt orders will be taken at this time also. Our General Membership Meeting will be held at 6:45pm on July 12 th prior to our Wednesday dance. We are always on the lookout for new ideas. Your input is very valuable and much appreciated. Until next time, stay cool and enjoy a safe summer. Cheryl Minnich. Yes, I dance in my car. “Do you want to Dance?” John I.

The past two months I have written about the importance of taking quality lessons in the style of dance you

prefer. But what happens after lessons, “How do I put into practice what I’ve learned?”

Gentlemen or leaders, don’t be pushy, remember that the art of leading is the act of providing the follower with

the opportunity to do a move. It is NOT the act of telling, forcing or commanding your follower into a move they

do not know how to do or you don’t lead well.

Ladies or followers, stay relaxed but maintain your frame so the leader can lead you through a move.

Leaders, remember, simple first. Make sure you can perfect the basic moves before you move onto more difficult

movements. Your follower will appreciate you more.

Watch how others dance. Both leaders and followers can learn from watching other dancers. Sometimes you

can learn what NOT to do as well as, what someone else is doing well.

Above all else, remember it’s all about having a good time. Smile, laugh and enjoy the moment. There’s really no

other purpose to dancing, besides happiness is healthy.

Oh, by the way, in the first paragraph I said what happens after lessons? The answer is, never stop taking lessons

when you get the chance. Both leaders and followers can always learn something new or perfect what you

    already have learned.

  • MY MEMORIES OF O.N.C.J.C By Diana Williamson

Twenty years ago, too long ago for me to remember years and dates, we were asked by Lou and Kathy (Kap) Chermak many, many times to come and meet them in the Valley to listen and dance to this guy’s music. Only thing was it was on a Sunday night. Who wants to go out on a Sunday night, right? We finally broke down and went and what can I say... WOW... HOOKED!

Hooked on Beach Music: We had never heard of this kind of music before and I fell in love with it. Joe Price, Best DJ I have ever known, and his wife Jackie were so nice. They enjoyed every minute of playing and dancing together. That is where we meet Patty and Don Ondecker, Don and Karen, Dave and Lil, Burt and Betsy and a few other Cleveland people. It was then that Burt had known about the American Bop Association and was getting details on starting a club. Jack and I left for vacation and WOW our club was formed.

Fast forward to the Moose on old RT. 8. We reorganized and again started dancing there. Jack and I taught lessons for many years. We went to all the weekend functions the other clubs hosted. We took the classes, learned the steps and brought them back to the club for everyone to learn.

During 2005 and 2006 I was the President of the club. For many years we only had about 70 members. We had our spring, fall and Christmas dances all hosted by so many of the couples and single girls and guys, some of who still belong to the club. I would like to thank them all for their help. Bob and Joann, Ted and Dianne, Esther and George, Lee, Keith and Chris, Barry and May, Sue and Nick, Bill and Roberta, Chuck, Nancy and Dave, Fred, Barb, Jerry, Jack L., Jack W. Cathy, and Leo. We didn’t have the money to have the dances catered. Everyone pitched in and made the food.

Then came the closing of the "Boot Scoot". Our club started growing at this time. We ended up with some truly nice people from there. We then tried to have Friday night dances at the Barberton Center. I had organized a Saturday workshop that turned out pretty nice. We filled the place and Jim and Georgia Watson from the Columbus Club came up and helped us out, teaching a West Coast swing lesson. The Center was sold, so ….. no more dances there. I also tried to have some Friday night dances at the Hibernian Club, but they were really not willing to work with us and that was short lived.

One thing everyone seemed to like was our bus trips to Parkersburgh for their club’s picnics. It was always an awesome day, dancing by the river and the food was great! Even when it poured down rain one year, we danced through it. Just ask some of the ones who went, about the NEW BUS breaking down. What a night! Thanks to our friends at Thomas Limousine for our safe travels. Right Jimmy, Joyce and Leigh?

Soon we out grew the Moose Club and started the dances at the Quirk Center. They had a nice Big dance floor; many, many more people heard about us, and Our club grew even more. Soon Bruce and Cheryl took over the lessons, Kap was still doing the newsletters, and Jerry was now President.

The Club is still growing and many people volunteer for working the door, working the special nights at club and hosting the special events. Thanks to Jack Lavis for two terms as President and now we have Cheryl. The club is doing Awesome. Big Thanks to all the DJ's; Lou, David, Roy, Fred, Jerry, Eddie, and Mary. Thanks to Les for the Pancake Breakfast and workshops. Thank you goes out to Barry and May, Bill and Roberta, Nick and Sue for working the "Support your Team Night" and Jack L. for providing the grill; Carol for the Charity Committee, and Karen, Roy, Kathy S., and Sally for Cake Night. So many of the new girls have been working the kitchen now for the special events. THANK YOU ALL. Thanks for all who volunteer as the door greeters. And for all who Work the dance lessons; Linda, Jerry, Joyce, Frank, Jimmy, Chris, Cheryl, Bruce, Jack L., Lou, Kathy, Jack W., Diana, David, Steve and Maria.

As a Past President I do have many stories about the club, but I'd rather just say Thank you all for making our club a GREAT PLACE to come. Without you there would be NO club.

  • CHARITY EVENT

“Gone, but not forgotten!” As you might be able to tell from the pictures, our Charity event was an evening full of fun. An amount of $443 was raised towards our 2017 donation to Springtime of Hope. The event was chaired by Mary Friberg who spun the tunes of artists who had passed. May they always live on in their songs. Thank yous go out to the Board for their continued support of “dressing the part,” the Charity Committee for planning and executing such a memorable time, and to the members for being so generous with your donations.
