GRAND KNIGHTS CORNER – Lee Nuttall Greetings. I’m the new Grand Knight for this Council. First, I would like to thank my predecessor Chet Ostrowski for his leadership and guidance over the last two years. I’m very proud and honored to take over the leadership of the Dooley Council. Our council consists of Catholic men that care about helping people in need and truly making a difference. Also, our members are working toward being better Catholic men – better Christians, husbands, fathers and citizens in the community. My personal journey has been interesting. I am a convert. I was raised Protestant and was blessed to marry my wife, Kaye … a devout Catholic. I was still an active Protestant when we were married. Initially, I began my faith journey by going to St. Colette to simply support her in her faith. But, not long after we were married I felt the true presence of Jesus enter my life. I realized that coming to the Catholic Church wasn’t just to support her … the Catholic Church was coming to support me. My journey, however, was just starting. I needed to find a way to put my faith into action. I picked up a copy of the “Dooley Echo” -- what you are looking at right now -- and saw the good things that this Council was doing. My wife suggested joining the Knights … a suggestion that gave me a specific way I could put my faith into action. It’s been 9 years since I joined this Council. It is a blessing and now an honor to lead this group of good Catholic men. Life is a journey … enjoy the ride … and why not make a difference along the way. Call me or Bill Alderman if you’re ready to take a great ride.

Active Knights can Earn Shining Armor Award The Knights of Columbus Shining Armor Award recognizes Knights who are active in their Councils and recruit new members. Have you earned one yet? If not, what are you waiting for? There are two versions of the Shining Armor Award – one awarded by Supreme for Knights in their first year of membership, and the other awarded by the Michigan State Council for Knights who have been members for more than one year. For a new Knight to be eligible to receive the Supreme Award, he must complete the following in his first year of membership:
• Be involved in at least three Council programs.
• Attend at least three Council meetings.
• Receive his Second and Third Degrees.
• Meet with the Council’s insurance representative.
• Recruit at least one new member. Any Knight who completes the above Shining Armor Award requirements – no matter how long
he has been a member – is eligible for the Michigan Shining Armor Award. If you believe you have met the above conditions or have any questions about the award,
please contact one of the Activation Team’s co-chairs – PGK Dan Vecchioni at 734.591.9318, email [email protected], or John Glennon at 734.968.2286, e-mail [email protected].
Mark your calendars for 2018-19 Euchre Parties A new fraternal year brings a new season of our Council’s popular and fun-filled Euchre Parties. Nine Euchre Parties are scheduled, beginning in September and running monthly through May 2019. It’s not too early to mark your calendars. All the Euchre Parties are held in the St. Colette Activities Center and begin at 6:45 p.m., unless otherwise noted. Here’s the schedule:
• Friday, Sept. 14.
• Friday, Oct. 12.
• Friday, Nov. 9.
• Friday, Dec. 14.
• Friday, Jan. 11.
• Friday, Feb. 8.
• Friday, March 22, at 7:30 p.m. (after the Lenten Stations of the Cross).
• Friday, April 12, at 7:30 p.m. (after the Lenten Stations of the Cross).
• Friday, May 10. As always, the games are open to Knights, their families and their friends. Cost is $5 per person, plus 25 cents per euchre, with all the money returned at night’s end in prizes and raffles. Complimentary snacks and beverages are provided. The emphasis each night is on fun and fellowship. You don’t need to be a card shark. In fact, newcomers interested in learning how to play euchre are welcome, with free lessons available when arranged in advance. For more information, contact Mike Felczak at 734.462.2355. So please join us at one or more of our 2018-19 games. We’ll have a seat waiting.

Buyers and sellers needed for FootballMania! To raise additional funds for our Council’s charitable activities, we are participating again this year in FootballMania! FootballMania! is a sweepstakes-based way to enjoy the upcoming pro-football season. For $25, you receive a card that assigns you three randomly-selected pro-football teams for each week of the 17-week season. If your three teams score among the highest total points in a week, you win between $25 and $400. If your teams score among the lowest total points, you win $25 or $50. There also are grand prizes of $600 for the highest-valued card of the season, and $300 for the lowest-valued card of the season. Also, our Council is participating again in FootballMania!’s Guaranteed Winners program. This guarantees that we will have at least one winner every week of the football season just among the cards our Council sells. Each week, you can check how your three teams are doing by going to www.charitymania.com. But you don’t have to. We’ll inform you if you have a winning card in any given week. And the beauty of FootballMania! is that our Council gets to keep $17.50 out of every card we sell. We’re looking for Brother Knights who are interested in buying cards for themselves and who are interested in selling cards to their family members and friends. The football season kicks off in a little less than two months, so we’re asking for your help now. Please contact Norb Giczewski at [email protected], or Dan Vecchioni at [email protected].
