I want to say thank you for your membership in the Boca Chamber – and if you are reading this, but not yet a member of the Chamber – thank you for your interest in the Boca Raton business community. The Boca Chamber is working to enhance the superior quality of life in Boca Raton by building the strength and vitality of the local business community. As you may know, the Boca Chamber is celebrating our 60th year of operation and our diamond anniversary is turning out to be a very promising and very exciting year on many levels. This year, the Chamber became the first Chamber in the State to hold a Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!). This 33-week program, which was made possible through our partnership with FAU’s Adam Center for Entrepreneurship and Florida Power and Light, brought 24 students in 7th through 12th grade through the process of starting their own business. The objective is to instill in these students the desire to create a job, not just take a job. The business ideas were impressive and innovative and, with the help of local leaders who served as mentors, the students worked diligently to create a thorough business plan. In May, the students presented their business plans to a local investor panel. Each student impressed the panel so much that each business was granted 100 percent of their desired funding. That same evening, the panel chose a winner to compete in Rochester, New York, in the national YEA! competition. And that young woman, Rebecca Zerbo, came in first place in the entire country with her company, Positive Pocket, an anti-bullying campaign! Positive Pocket is now a Chamber Member and Rebecca is still attracting national attention. The Chamber is looking forward to continuing this success when the next class begins in the fall. You can read more about YEA! on page 5. Speaking of emerging leaders, the Leadership Boca Class of 2012 just graduated after months of getting to see up close all that goes into making this community great. One of the many benefits of this program is the relationships that are built during the journey and the class is already looking forward to working together to help better our community. Congratulations to the graduates!

One of the best ways to help our community is to support the many non-profit events that occur during the month of August – known as Boca Festival Days. This program is the Chamber’s outreach to the non-profit community. There are many fun and entertaining events happening throughout the month, so we encourage you to attend as many as you can, especially the Boca Chamber’s Wine & All that Jazz on Saturday, August 4th. Visit www.bocaratonchamber.com/BocaFestEvents for details on the events. As part of our community outreach, the Chamber has partnered with Lynn University to create the Official Small

Business Debate Partnership program for the final 2012 Presidential Debate. Our business community is banding together to show a united front when the world’s attention turns to Boca Raton in late October. I encourage you to take part in this once in a lifetime opportunity. See page 8 for more information. Your Chamber continues to represent your business interests on the local, regional and state level and to provide outstanding opportunities to build your business. Many of the members of the Chamber team sit on local and statewide boards and committees. I am honored to once again have been asked

to serve on the board for the Florida Association for Chamber Professionals. FACP focuses on developing chamber professionals to serve their chambers and communities better and advocating for business statewide to create a pro-business environment so your company can be successful. As you work to promote your business, we encourage you to Buy Chamber goods and services. Support your business community by supporting your fellow Chamber Members. See a list of highlighted Chamber Members on page 4. Have a great summer and thanks for your confidence in the Boca Chamber to continue to lead the business community down the road to success.

For now, I want to say congratulations and thank you to these students for making this a memorable inaugural year:

Rebecca Zerbo – Eagles Landing Middle SchoolSam Steiner – Saint Andrews SchoolAlex Heatzig – Saint Andrews SchoolJordan Rosen – Eagles Landing Middle SchoolJackson Parell – Saint Andrews SchoolJack Meyers – Don Estridge High Tech Middle SchoolZach Elgart – Saint Andrews School Yoli Navis – Spanish River High SchoolSara Brenes – Boca Prep International SchoolHarrison Brenner – Saint Andrews SchoolDaniel Nascimento – Boca Raton High SchoolKyle Dagnan – Woodlands Middle SchoolAndre Heizer – West Boca Raton Community High SchoolSabrina Ungerman – Saint Andrews SchoolMatthew Butzer – Saint Andrews SchoolTyler Martin – Saint Andrews SchoolRyan Wennick – Saint Andrews School

I'm the lucky one who gets to chart the course of this amazing effort on behalf of the Boca Chamber, but at the end of the day, everyone involved makes a difference.

Thank you to our business plan mentors for guiding the students through a very grown-up project, Digital Media Arts College for working with the students on their logos and websites, HERLIFE Magazine for the incredible cover and feature story and each and every member of the investor panel for such amazing time, dedication and generosity. Lastly, thank you to the YEA! professional instructors - Joe Pores of Call4Health, Chim Francisco of JuicePlus, and Bonnie Kaye of Kaye Communications - for helping to steer the curriculum and the program's success.

Many have asked me to reflect on the inaugural year of the Boca Chamber Young Entrepreneurs Academy. There are many highlights, so how do I capture all of them? It’s just not possible, so I've decided to write from my heart to put a personal spin on it.

Leading the Boca Raton community in such an educational and new experience is a source of true pride for the Boca Chamber and for me personally. This adventure, involving partnerships with businesses, educational institutions, parents, students and others, has created a wonderful sense of camaraderie in our community.

The success of our YEA! class would not be at all possible without the fantastic partnership and friendship with Florida Atlantic University's Adams Center for Entrepreneurship, the sponsorships provided by Florida Power and Light and Saint Andrew's School.

After spending seven months with these students, week after week, I have watched these young people grow in so many ways. But most of all, I’m impressed by how they have matured into such fine young people. I have seen each and every one of their confidence levels increase to the point that these young men and women stood proudly in front of a panel of distinguished business leaders and presented their business plans with impressive ease and professionalism.

Throughout their classes, the students respected the advice of seasoned professionals who mentored their progress. The young entrepreneurs interacted with these professionals in a kind and respectful manner that restored my faith in direct person-to-person learning – a nice relief from today’s seemingly absolute dependence on the Internet as a source of information. Don’t get me wrong, the Internet is an excellent tool, but today’s students need a strong mix.

Back in the fall, everyone at the Boca Chamber knew YEA! would be a big undertaking. It was a decision we are very proud to have made. It has been my personal privilege to lead the Boca Chamber YEA! and we are already

anticipating great things from next year’s class

Many of us have sedentary jobs. We sit at desks clicking away on computer keyboards. When we do move around the building, we rarely walk up and down stairs, opting instead to take the elevator. Recent studies show that sitting for long periods of time, and not taking the stairs, can be dangerous to employees’ health. This lack of movement leads to increasing health care costs, lost time and productivity. But all is not lost. Big and small companies can encourage employees to make healthier lifestyle choices in the workplace that will benefit workers and, ultimately, the employers’ bottom line. The best news of all is that many of these activities cost little or no money. In this CONNECTION issue and the next, we will provide some easy-to-implement program ideas that can help companies of all sizes improve the health of their workers. Educating employees is a first step. This can be done with a company-wide awareness campaign about wellness. Provide information explaining what wellness means; why it’s important to employees and to the company; and the goals and upcoming activities. Encouragement is critical to the success of any wellness program. Intranet stories, e-mails about fitness classes, health tips and wellness seminars can all help to inform and inspire.

Here are some other wellness ideas that can be done easily at any company:

• Organize a lunchtime walking team & provide pedometers; make it a competition such as, “Walk Across Florida.”• Run a “10,000 Steps” campaign and recognize the top 5-10 employees publicly.• Encourage employees interested in similar kinds of activities and sports to form their own company- sponsored teams so they can work out & play as a group. • Implement a stair-use program (e.g., Friday Flights) to encourage employees to take the stairs, not the elevator.• Create a bulletin board or open wall space for a healthy recipe exchange, with different themes each month - January, for example, could be “Whole Grains” month.• Distribute wellness calendars that contain inspirational messages.

Keep an eye out for our next article. It will cover partnerships that can help you achieve your company’s wellness goals.

Business 101Your CONNECTION

to good business!

Are you thinking about relocating your business to a new commercial space this spring?

Assuming your business is financially fit for a move, there’s no better time than the present to take advantage of affordable rates.

Here are two tips to consider before relocating your business. Remember, the best move for your business has to be the right move for your business!

Do you have an up-to-date business plan? Before determining whether to relocate your small business, update your business plan to clearly identify whether relocation makes the most sense. A detailed business plan can help determine if a potential move is the right choice, and help you understand whether relocation will be successful and profitable.

Accurately updating your business plan also helps you assess whether a move is affordable. Review your business balance sheet, income statement and cash flow forecast, and include exact information on net worth and descriptions of assets and liabilities.

It’s also important to consider expenses. Will a new move lead to higher operational expenditures such as added transportation and energy costs? If a move requires shutting

down for days or weeks, calculate any loss in revenue into your plan.

Ask your banker for adviceWhen considering buying or leasing a new space, a commercial real estate agent might be the first person you’d think to contact. But what about your banker?

Ask your banker for the available mortgage products and services that best suit your current financial situation. A trusted, business banker should be able to give you easy-to-understand advice that allows you to make smart borrowing decisions on a mortgage product that meets your business’ needs today and in the future.

If you’ve already decided on a property to buy, be prepared to discuss with your banker your updated financial information, a personal financial statement and a signed purchase and sale agreement. Once a complete financial package is presented, the approval is typically within 72 hours and then 30 days to close after the appraisal is completed.

Following these tips will help you realize if relocation is the right step toward continued success!

By Ernie Diaz, South Florida Market President at TD Bank, America’s Most Convenient Bank® Submitted by Jason Javens of TD Bank.

2. What is the main goal of your business? Together we all share a common objective: to protect and grow your assets.

3. Who inspired you to go into business? My parents - They are true entrepreneurs. My mom, Mary, is a fabulous artist, had been a partner in a gallery in New York, and exhibited in many notable locations throughout Manhattan, Long Island and South Florida. It is important to me and my family to be in control as well as have the freedom, flexibility and creativity to navigate the journey.

4. What are the two greatest advantages of doing business in Boca raton / being a member of the Boca Chamber?

The Boca Chamber is an integral component of the business community in Boca Raton and Palm Beach County. 1. How long have you been in business? The company was founded by Ed Harper Jr. in 1956. I started to work here in 1966, working part-time while attending Boca Raton High School. I used this opportunity to put myself through Florida Atlantic University. After I graduated from FAU in 1972, staying on just seemed the natural thing to do. I liked the printing business, and still do.

2. What is the main goal of your business? Our main goal has always been to establish a close working relationship with our clients. When we understand their needs, we can provide the best quality printing at the most affordable price. In that process, we also hope to provide the highest quality related services too -- like timely completion of jobs, delivery, mailing services, and many others.

3. Who inspired you to go into business?Undoubtedly it was Mr. Harper. He was a perfect mentor. He was a gentleman; knew everything there was to know about the printing business back then; and he was a good teacher. Taught me everything. And I’d like to think I was a good student. Of course, since those early days we’ve made innumerable changes -- particularly in the areas of printing technology. In addition to traditional offset printing, we’ve gone digital; added greatly to our design capabilities for customers who need that, and a whole lot more. 4. What are the two greatest advantages of doing business in Boca raton / being a member of the Boca Chamber?I believe Boca Printing is one of the oldest members of the Chamber. Over the years, we’ve made a lot of contacts through the Chamber. And, being in Boca, we think we’re pretty centrally-located, serving customers from all over South Eastern Florida.

5. Where should I go to find out more? Just give us a call at 561-395-8404. Our office hours are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Of course, we’re sometimes here beyond those hours if necessary. Folks can also check us out on the web too at bocaprinting.com

One of the best things about our great City is the amazing work of our non-profit community - and the support and encouragement they recieve from you! Boca Festival Days is the Boca Chamber's outreach to our non-profit organizations as we help spread the word about all of the amazing events happening throughout the month of August.

With the help of Boca Festival Days 2012 Chair Jon Sahn, the events are created and run by a pairing of non-profit and for-profit Boca Chamber members to raise funds and awareness for the non-profit organization. These great celebrations and educational opportunities are held at different locations around Boca Raton all month.

This year, people are getting creative and getting involved! From playing mini-golf INSIDE the Boca Raton Museum of Art to singing kareoke for Hospice of Palm Beach County at The Dubliner to Bowling for Bread at Strikes of Boca for Boca Helping Hands, one thing is for certain: you will not be bored this August!

We have an amazing line-up of events - details and more can be found on www.bocaratonchamber.com/BocaFestEvents! Please note that events are in the process of being added, so check back frequently to stay up-to-date!

Because Community Matters...

Join the fun this August to show your Support to the Amazing Work of our local Non-Profit Organizations!

It is one of the beautiful compensations in this life that no one can sincerely try to help another without helping
