My Friends,
Please join me in thanking
John Cuomo for his long and
dedicated service to our
Kehillah/Community. His
thoughtful leadership, even
temperament, honesty, quiet
confidence, and integrity were
the right mix of strengths to
have successfully guided us
over the last two years. I hope,
with your help, to continue
creative strategies for growth to
meet the needs of all our people
within our sanctuary and school
while at the same time serving
our broader community.
Living Gratefully.
The motto of the Utah Food
Bank’s annual Thanksgiving 5K
and 10K Human Race is to
“Run with an Attitude of
Gratitude.” Through our Social
Action Committee, currently led
by David Sonnenreich and
Bonnie Rokeach, Kol Ami has a
deep commitment to working
together as a congregation for
the wider common good, to feel
good by doing good.
This coming school year,
Kol Ami will inaugurate a
partnership with the Utah Food
Bank by participating in the
Utah Food Bank Mobile School
Pantry. This amazing program
was developed but a few short
years ago to complement the
school meal programs for the 1
in 5 Utah children who cope
with food insecurity. Now, once
a month during the school year,
a truck arrives from the Utah
Food Bank onto school property
where volunteers working with
Food Bank staff and school
administrators distribute about
20 pounds of food to each
eligible child/family. We have
been offered the opportunity to
sponsor Riley Elementary
School (1410 South 800 West,
Salt Lake City). As sponsors of
this program, we will have both
a financial ($5,000) and
volunteer time commitment.
Each month (nine in total over
the year), we will need eight
volunteers to assist in food
distribution for three-hours. If
you have not yet been involved
with a Social Action program,
this could be a wonderful
opportunity for you to
experience first-hand the
dedication and Simcha of Social
Action volunteers. As the school
year nears, we will provide you
with further details about this
program and thank you for
your participation.
Rabbinic Search.
As you know Rabbi
Schwartzman’s tenure at Kol
Ami ends next spring after eight
years of dedicated service. The
Rabbi and Art are looking to
move closer to their support
systems with the arrival of their
daughter Sabine. We recently
held a Town Hall meeting to
begin our discussion on the
process of searching for and
selecting our next spiritual
leader.
This was a motivating and
encouraging meeting. The
progression of activities
following this Town Hall
includes: selection of a search
committee, further self-
evaluation on the attributes we
seek in our future Rabbi, formal
application to the movements,
candidates resume reviews,
voice/video interviews,
reference contacts, visits,
decision, and negotiation. I am
pleased to share with you that
Nicole Fenwick and Jim
Isaacson have agreed to lead
this process. We have a busy
year ahead.
We look forward to hearing
from inspirational voices so that
we might understand the shared
needs of our Kehillah. In
addition, we need your energies
to make this a successful
mission. To share your

From our Cantor / Educator, Wendy Bat-Sarah
Once upon a time, Jewish
Education was fairly easy to
define. Girls learned Bible
stories, how to pray, how to
observe the holidays, and how
to keep a Jewish home. Boys
learned Hebrew, Torah, and
Talmud. How was “Torah”
defined for these students?
Quite simply, it was the Written
Teachings – all 24 books of the
Jewish scriptures – and the
commentaries. Jewish
Educators in America work to
give our students an even
broader sense of “Torah.”
In the United States almost
everything about living a Jewish
life changed completely and
irrevocably. From the
beginning, Jews were integrated
into American society in a way
that was unthinkable in Europe,
North Africa, or the Near and
Middle East. We grew up within
secular American culture,
watching the same shows,
experiencing the same political
moments, wearing the same
clothes, and dancing to the same
music as everyone around us.
This was a completely new
development for Jewish
civilization and it has led to a
completely new model of
Jewish education and social
involvement. As we learned
from Rabbi Belle Michael on
Shavuot, Rabbi Mordechai
Kaplan helped to re-define and
broaden the scope of Jewish
Education in America. He
encouraged the inclusion of all
of science, art, literature, and
music within our understanding
of God’s Torah. Given the open
inquiry encouraged by most
American education, we cannot
expect our children to value
Judaism unless we include the
fullness of their experiences.
Rabbi Kaplan’s approach
led to the growth of synagogues
as cultural hubs offering books
clubs and bingo, and to the
development of Jewish
Community Centers throughout
America. It has also
significantly broadened the
scope of Jewish Education.
Within a Conservative,
Reconstructionist, or Reform
setting, educators are expected
to provide their students with an
all-encompassing experience of
Jewish life that includes the
following:
Knowledge of Hebrew, both
Modern and Biblical.
Familiarity with details of
Biblical stories, as well as
the ability to analyze them
for literary or ethical content.
Knowledge of ritual
observances, along with
traditional prayers and
creative ways to mark Jewish
occasions.
Traditional and modern
prayer music, Israeli folk
dance, and arts and crafts
with Jewish themes.
Knowledge of Jewish history
and of Jewish cultural
variations – not all Jews eat
gefilte fish!
An ability to carry a Jewish
ethical outlook into the
Sciences and the Humanities
or any career.
A sense of responsibility to
the local Jewish community
and to global Jewry.
The ability to comfortably
live a cross-cultural life as a
Jew within American culture.
A love of the Land and the
State of Israel and an ability
to analyze the complicated
dilemmas the State of Israel
faces.
A sense of belonging to a
People with a unique history
and outlook.
An experience of Holiness,
whether as a connection to
God or to the community.
This is exciting and
challenging work. Those who
engage in the task of educating
the next generation and those
who fund this work are
knowingly involving themselves
in a truly herculean task, a task
which requires many hours over
the course of a lifetime, a task
which calls upon teachers and
parents to constantly learn and
engage with their community.
I am so deeply proud of the
way that this community
supports the building and re-
building of Jewish life in each
generation. The fullness of
Jewish American culture is
wonderfully rich and truly
astounding. Through your hard
work and commitment, our
community is able to provide
our children access to this
ancient and constantly evolving
tradition.

For Preschool Age Children & their Families
Hadassah’s Training Wheels allows preschool age children or
grandchildren of Hadassah members to discover the joys of being Jewish
in a hands-on, pressure off, friendly environment. You will experience
nine fun-filled sessions celebrating Shabbat, Rosh HaShanah, Sukkot,
Hanukkah, Tu B’Shevat, Purim, Passover, Yom Ha’atzmaut, and Shavu’ot.
We are excited to be moving
forward with plans for our New
Discoveries Preschool at Kol Ami
(NDP@KA) preschool. Over the next
few weeks we will be setting up Room
8 in the Youth Wing as our first
preschool room. We’re also adding a
new playground in the outdoor space
between the main building and the
Youth Wing, which will become the
beautiful entry to the New Discoveries
Preschool. New fencing will also be
added in the area to protect our little
discoverers.
We will be offering a quality
competitively priced program that
utilizes The Creative Curriculum, the
same curriculum used by our JCC , and
we are grateful for the support of the J,
and PJ Goes to School “ a companion
program to PJ Library® dedicated to
using PJ Library books to start
conversations, build relationships, and
bring Jewish values to life in your
school community”. NDP@KA will
also take advantage of Esther’s Garden
in the curriculum and we welcome
children across our diverse
community.
In the future when we have five
full rooms of preschoolers we project
six figure revenues to help balance our
budgets for years to come.
We will begin open enrollment,
after licensing, with a soft opening in
the January and full opening in the fall
of 2018. The NDP@KA will have a
website with program and pricing
information up soon.
We encourage you to consider
enrolling your preschoolers
into our New Discoveries Preschool.
We hope everyone will help us spread
the news of our preschool to your
friends, coworkers, family, and
networks.

Jewishkeit/Yiddushkeit means a Jewish way of thinking
and a Jewish way of life. It includes our customs and rituals,
as well as an approach to life that supports social justice and social action, Tikun Olam, and it
speaks to our Jewish identity and experiences. At Kol Ami our goal is to honor our heritage
while exploring new ways to celebrate and evolve our Jewishness in a caring, inclusive,
egalitarian, and dynamic community.
As we’ve begun a new fiscal
year (on July 1) and, as we approach the new Jewish year 5778 (on the eve of September
20), it is a time to take account of our blessings; including how
fortunate we are to have Kol Ami as our Synagogue. Kol Ami offers us a place to pray and
learn and, just as importantly, a place where we gather to socialize, explore Judaism, and
be with old and new friends. Here families, singles,
children and seniors, new Jews, black, Hispanic, LGBTQ,
Interfaith, physically challenged, visually and hearing impaired, and those with cognitive
disabilities, as well as the stranger who comes in our doors to visit and leaves as a new
friend, each increase our diversity and strengthen and support our identity and our
mission. Kol Ami truly is a place where everyone is welcome and everyone counts! There is so
much to be learned from our diverse community and so much to be gained from our shared
experience. On behalf of our membership we are grateful for
each member and your support of Kol Ami and participation in our shared journey.
So much is going here as we prepare for the holidays and the New Year. Though this year will
bring more change, we are rooted in a common journey and
a deep desire to preserve our Jewishness. Thank you to
everyone involved; our donors, volunteers, leadership, clergy, staff, and all our members.
This year. as you consider your approach to the coming year and the years ahead, I hope
that you will recommit to your Jewishness and to maintaining the Jewishkeit/Y iddushkeit that
we seek to preserve and enhance at Kol Ami.

Our Jewish Community
Our tribute to outgoing
President John Cuomo was well
attended and in the words of
Larry Green was “Crazy Fun.”
This was our 11th production and
perhaps out best. It will be
memorable for many things the
many people did to make it so.
We moved indoors because of
windy weather and it made for a

So much to report!
We were honored to
announce the Bunk Fox

Bunk’s extremely generous gift
is greatly appreciated and we got
a chance to personally thank him
at Koffee House.
We had a chance to rib and
roast John but in all seriousness,
John has been a great President
tirelessly working to serve us
among all his other
responsibilities, including
working round the globe. We’ve
been lucky to have him.
Liz Paige began by calling
up Past President’s of Kol Ami
to welcome John to the club.
Beside Liz, there was Jay
Jacobson, Danny Burman, Karen
McArthur, Art Warsoff, Ray
Kesner, David Sonenriech, and
Rick Rappaport all present!
Art began with a geography
quiz for the audience to identify
John’s whereabouts. (Hint: he’s
on the back row, still hiding
out.) Then, the Kol Ami Players
launched into the musical Where
In the World Is John Cuomo?
That would be yours truly,

thoughts, ask questions, or offer to
work on the search, please
contact Nicole and Jim at
Rafi Schwartz Religious School
(RSRS).
RSRS’s guiding principle is to
“foster an appreciation and awareness
of Judaism in all its facets.” We all
know how committed our teachers are
to direct our students, our children, in
this process. Under the leadership of
Cantor Bat-Sarah, the religious school
is seeing significant growth in
enrollment in the younger grades,
which portends well for the future
strength of our school. The new RSRS
Committee (thank you Joy Fisher,
Religious School Committee Chair) has
already met to plan for the 2017-2018
year.
Bunk Fox has been a generous
and dear supporter of our community
for many years. As I hope you have
heard, he has now broadened his
commitment to Kol Ami by
establishing a scholarship for students
at the RSRS. This scholarship, this
blessing, which reduces tuition by
25%, is available to all Kol Ami
members. A revised school registration
form to reflect this scholarship is being
prepared. In addition to saying thank
you to Bunk, we need to work to
sustain and grow this precious gift. If
you can, consider donating the savings
provided by Bunk’s gift back into the
scholarship fund so it continues to
support the next generation of students.
This Old House.
Our home for over 40 years is
showing some wear and tear (actually
some days it feels like a lot of wear and
tear). We cannot thank Fedor and
Victor enough for their skills and
passion in maintaining our synagogue
on a shoestring. Danny Burman, Larry
Green and Knute Peterson are working
assiduously to repair and replace the
pieces as they decay over time. It is
time that we develop a more practical
and sustained plan to maintain this
wonderful place. I will be asking the
Board of Trustees after the (secular)
New Year to begin developing a capital
campaign for our future.

When the Religious Practices
Committee (RPC) met on March 27th.
The agenda included: Consideration of
the bagels from The Bagel Project (8th
South & 5th East) as Kosher for use at
Kol Ami Oneg/Kiddushim and events.
Discussion: The ingredients used
in the baking of the bagels have been
reviewed and the ingredients in their
bagels and baked goods are Hecshered
and The Bagel Project is a dairy-only
bakery. The concern then arises from
the fact that the Bagel Project is open
on Shabbat. After lengthy discussion
on this issue at multiple meetings, the
committee recommended to the Rabbi
and Board that we approve The Bagel
Project’s bagels for use at Kol Ami.
Consideration was given to the fact
that this is our only option for Kosher
bagels in Salt Lake City, and we were
not condoning the opening on Shabbat
but only approving the baked goods
for use at Kol Ami. This decision was
backed up by a decision of the
Rabbinical Assembly of the
Conservative Movement. See
“CONCLUSION: We therefore
propose the following solution.
Rabbinical Assembly members may
extend supervision to Jewish-owned
and/or operated establishments which
bake and/or remain open on Shabbat.
At the same time, rabbis should
emphasize that acknowledging the
Kashrut of the food made in such
establishments does not endorse being
open on Shabbat. We are giving our
approval to the baked goods, not the
baker. Please note that the fish, fish
salads, hummus, cream cheese spreads
are NOT Hecshered and are NOT
approved for use at Kol Ami events.
We do feel that given the existence
of communities where food prepared
under rabbinic supervision is difficult
to obtain, we should do everything in
our power to make such food more
readily available. At the same time, we
must make it clear that we are also
committed to the observance of other
Mitzvot, in this case Shabbat.
I have served as Chair of the
Religious Practices Committee for four
years. During that time, we have
considered a variety of questions of
religious ritual and practice at Kol
Ami. I have enjoyed every minute of
the discussions and debates and I am
proud of the committee members I
have served with and the decisions and
recommendations we have made to
keep Kol Ami’s value to honor our
past while exploring new ways to
celebrate Judaism and be inclusive of
our diversity.
It is now my pleasure to announce
that Myles Greenberg has taken over
as Chair of the Religious Practices
Committee. Myles has both deep
knowledge of Judaism and a
commitment to address the religious
practices at Kol Ami. Please contact
him with your questions, concerns and
interest in participating on the RPC.
Best wishes for a L’Shana Tovah!

June 2017
Michele Greenberg August 5, 2017
Michele is excited to be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on August 5th.
She has been attending The McGillis School and Kol Ami’s Rafi Schwartz
Religious School since our family moved to Utah from Connecticut in 2014.
She will be starting 8th grade in the fall. Her favorite part of the McGillis School
curriculum is the Outdoor Environmental Education program and also Hebrew
and Ethics classes taught by our very own Yotam Livnat and Liz Paige.
Michele’s passion is for any activity outdoors – skiing, hiking, camping,
fishing, climbing - you name it, and she probably likes it. Unsurprisingly,
Michele chose an outdoor activity for her Bat Mitzvah project - to plant and care
for a section of Congregation Kol Ami’s Esther’s Garden intended to produce
food for refugees who now live in Utah. Thanks to Lisa Cohne and Siamak
Khadjenoury for helping her make this project possible.
Michele, often called Shelly by her friends, is named after her grandmother, zichrona livracha, who
shared her love for small children and animals and also her red hair! In fact, Michele’s Bat Mitzvah date
happens to fall on the week of her grandmother’s Y ahrzeit.
We would like to thank Cantor Bat-Sarah, Rabbi Schwartzman, Rabbi Wenger, David Asman, Liz Paige,
and Gillian Friedman for helping Michele to prepare for this special day. Michele looks forward to celebrating
her Bat Mitzvah along with the whole Kol Ami community, her McGillis School class, her three sisters, Anna,
Rebecca, and Sadie, and her parents, Carolyn and Myles. Her only disappointment is that her dog Monty can’t
come! Please join us if you are able.

Congregation Kol Ami’s
Annual High Holiday Appeal
2017/5778
PLEASE SUPPORT OUR COMMUNITY!
Donations will be matched!
help us reach our goal of 100% participation!!!
Those who came before us preserved our heritage for us.
Now it is out time to preserve it for our future.
Dear Congregant,
With 100% membership participation in our High Holiday
Appeal and the generous support of our matching donors
we can support our vision and build for our future!
As we enter into a new year, may we go from strength to
strength with the assurance that Kol Ami, the
congregation for all our people, will thrive this year and
for many years to come. Membership dues alone are not
enough to support our synagogue (or any other) these
days. They don't cover our operating expenses, much less
the myriad of programs and support services we provide.
In addition to the capital improvements that are needed,
programs like the Religious School, Adult Education, and
Social Action are only possible because of generous
support from Congregants. Your participation in the High
Holiday Appeal is crucial to maintaining Kol Ami, which is
more than a religious school, more than a place to pray,
more than a place for social gatherings. It is our
community's Jewish home.
As we come together during the holiest time of the year,
please make a contribution to Kol Ami’s High Holiday
Appeal. Your gift will not only help us cover this year’s
expenses but will help build an endowment to ensure our
Community’s home for years to come.
L'ShanahTovah from the
Board of Trustees of Congregation Kol Ami.

A Guide to the High Holidays – Jewishlearning.com
When Does the High Holidays
Season Begin?
The High Holiday period begins
on the first day of the Jewish month of
Elul (August 22nd). In the Ashkenazi
tradition, during this month of soul
searching, the Shofar, or ram’s horn,
is blown each morning except on
Shabbat, to call upon listeners to begin
the difficult process of repentance.
Also, in Elul special Haftarot -
prophetic portions - focusing on
consolation acknowledge the
vulnerability of an individual grappling
with personal change. During the week
before Rosh HaShanah, intensity
increases as Jews begin reciting
Selichot, prayers that involve
confessing sins and requesting God’s
forgiveness and help. On the Shabbat
before Rosh Hashanah (September 16),
the Selichot are chanted at night, rather
than their usual early morning hour.
What Are the 10 Days of
Repentance?
The culmination of the High
Holiday period occurs during the Ten
Days of Repentance, which begin on
Tishrei 1(September 20th) with Rosh
HaShanah and end with Yom Kippur
(September 29th). Not only is Rosh
HaShanah the Jewish New Year, which
commemorates God’s creation of the
world, but also the Day of Judgment,
when God remembers and judges all
human deeds. Except on Shabbat,
services are punctuated with the call of
the shofar, which according to
Maimonides, is saying, “Awake, you
sleepers, from your slumber…examine
your deeds, return in repentance, and
remember your Creator.”
What Happens on Yom Kippur?
Yom Kippur, known as the Shabbat
of all Shabbats, begins with the Kol
Nidre service immediately prior to
sunset. The heartrending poems and
prayers of the Machzor, the prayer
book used for Rosh HaShanah and
Yom Kippur, which express the themes
of repentance, human frailty, and
humility before God, combine with the
Nusah, or musical style of the service,
to express the momentousness of the
day.
Within the Ten Days of
Repentance, Y om Kippur is the
pinnacle of intensity, moving toward
the decisive moment at its close when
God is imagined as sealing the books
of life and death. The day’s total focus
on spiritual concerns is exemplified by
fasting and abstaining from everyday
activities.
The day closes with the Ne’ilah
service, during which penitents pray
before the open ark, with one last
chance to repent before the book of life
is sealed. The very name of the service,
Ne’ilah (locking) refers to the imagery
that the gates of repentance, open
during the High Holidays, are now
shutting. A lengthy sounding of the
Shofar, called a Tekiah Gedolah,
releases the Jew back into the realm of
the everyday bolstered by a final echo
of the call to repentance.

Rabbi Wenger Wonders
A few years ago,
filmmaker Roberta
Grossman gave us a
two hour movie
about a question few
ever stopped to ask:
What is the history of the old song
Hava Nagila - Let us rejoice?
It's the one Jewish song that
everyone knows. Harry Belefonte,
Connie Francis, Neil Diamond, Bob
Dylan, and Glen Campbell have all
sung Hava Nagila since the 50s. Is it a
19th Century, wordless Hassidic
Bigun? Is it an Israeli pioneer song
from the early days of the Y ishuv?
Many of us stumbled through a flying
hora at a wedding or a B’nai Mitzvah
to Hava Nagila, but who knew? Well,
here's the answer (Thank you Forward
magazine).
The melody was born in Sadagora,
Ukraine, where the Ruzhiner Rebbe,
Yisroel Friedman, established his court
in 1845. From there it traveled to
Palestine early in the 20th Century,
where Abraham Zvi Idelsohn, the
father of Jewish musicology,
transcribed it and added lyrics. Hava
Nagila became an overnight hit among
Jews of the Y ishuv after it was played
in a 1918 concert celebrating the defeat
of the Ottoman Turks by British forces
in World War I. It quickly became a
staple of Zionist culture in pre-state
Israel. Hava Nagila traveled across the
ocean to enter the folk song repertoire
of American Jewry. Referred to simply
as a “Palestinian” or “Hebrew” folk
song, it appeared in children’s
songbooks and was recorded by
cantors and folk music performers. By
the 1940s, it could be heard at almost
every B’nai Mitzvah and Jewish
wedding.
Summertime is the season for
Hava Nagila, for happy times:
Vacation. Concerts. Sunshine. We all
should sing it to Sabine Kieres, Rabbi
Ilana and Art's new baby girl.
But, summertime is not entirely a
happy time for Jews:
In July, there are two fast days,
one minor and one major. This year,
July 11th is the Fast of the 17th of
Tammuz. On that day, the walls of the
Temple in Jerusalem were breached by
the forces of General Titus of Rome in
70 CE.
It also commemorates the breach
of those walls by Nebuchadnezzar of
Babylon in 586 BCE. The Mishnah
adds four other tragic events to that
date:
1. The breaking of the two tablets of
the Torah by Moses in the wake of
our worship of the Golden Calf.
2. The cessation of the daily sacrifices
in the Jerusalem Temple.
3. The burning of the Torah by an
otherwise unknown Roman,
Apostomus.
4. The erection of an idol in the
Temple by the Romans.
The fast of the 17th of Tammuz
begins a period of time called the
Three Weeks, Die Drei Vochen,
Shloshet Shavu’ot. This period of time
is properly called bein hameitzrim, "
between the straits" following the text
of Lamentations I:3, as follows:
Judah is gone into captivity
because of affliction and because of
great servitude. She dwelleth among
the heathen. She findeth no rest. All
her persecutors overtook her between
the straits.
This year the Three Weeks begins
on Tuesday, July 11th, and ends on
Tuesday, August 1st. It is a per iod of
mourning which consists of two parts.
The first, from the 17th of Tammuz to
the 1st of Av, is of lesser intensity. The
second is a period of greater intensity
from the 1st of Av until Tisha B'Av,
the 9th of Av. The celebration of
marriages and all festive occasions are
prohibited during this time. Other
limitations are added by traditionalists.
The Haftarot, the readings of the
prophets consist of prophecies of
doom.
The Three Weeks end with Tisha
B'Av, the Fast of the 9th of Av, a major
fast day lasting 24 hours. In the words
of the Talmud:
Disasters recurred again and
again to the Jewish people.
On that day, Beitar, the last
stronghold of Bar Kokhba, was
captured by the Romans in 135 CE.
We also mark the destruction of the
first and second Temples, the plowing
of Jerusalem in 136 CE, the expulsion
of the Jews from Spain in 1492, the

The Sofer visits
Kol Ami and our
Religious School
have sorely missed in the past. To
boot, Joe lined us up with Merrill
Smith to play accompaniment on the
keyboards throughout the evening.
Merrill is truly a patient, kind,
dependable and talented man who also
tunes pianos. Call me if you need him.
I will never work without him again.
Dave Asman added a piece from
Green Acres devoted to John.
We next turned our full attention
to Peter Intrator, our resident poet, and
were rewarded by his wry
observations of the great quotidian.
Then, we were treated to the
refreshing beautiful harmonies and
ukulele of the Schindler Sisters,
actually Andrea, (the Mother), Tahila
(the daughter) and Andrea’s niece
Rachel Wasser a new upcoming talent
for sure.
Art announced special guests
Rebecca Heal and Heather Stewart.
Rebecca is on the board of The
Friendship Manor (FM) and is
organizing the celebration of its 50th
year at a function at Rice Eccles
Stadium later this fall. Kol Ami, the
First Unitarian Church, the Holladay
United Church of Christ and First
Congregational Church, appoint
members of FM’s Board. Art, Virginia
Heckler, Fran Lapin, Mimi Turner are
currently on the Board and Betty
Yanowitz and Bob Prottas continue to
serve Emeritus past presidents.
Heather’s father, Justin Stewart, was a
well-regarded attorney, founder of
Friendship Manor, man of good
works, and a peer of my father, Wally
Sandack. FM provides housing and
services for senior citizens with HUD
financial assistance for those in need.
Back to the stage. Helene and John
Cuomo sang a send off (Leaving on a
Jet Plane) to Richard and Cynthia
Melenson who have sold their home in
Salt Lake and are moving to Israel to
be with their family. We are very
happy for them but they will be
missed.
The evening would not be
complete without the comedic deadpan
team of Bob and Ray, aka Danny
Burman and Jim Isaacson joining the
ranks of the greats, Burns and Allen,
Brooks and Reiner, and Martin and
Lewis whose preeminence is not
threatened.
Tennessee Ernie Emeritus Cantor
Lawrence Loeb gave us an acapella
rendition of Sixteen Tons, apropos to
the heavy lifting John has been doing
on our behalf for so many years. Turns
out Trump isn’t the only one who
loves coal miners.
Finally, Moshe Onwukenme,
Joseph Aguilar and Gary Guitar Guru,
rocked the house with Johnny B. Bad,
the Kol Ami Players back on vocals.
Go Johnny Go-Go, Johnny B. Bad.
The full house stayed until the end
and left happy.
Special thanks to Larry Green who
made the kosher hamburger patties
and for the hard work he, Jay Jacobsen
and Judy Intrator did cooking so many
of them and the hot dogs. To Mimi
Turner for her cole slaw. Debbie
Sandack, Ehud Ardon for set up,
Jackie Daniels, Sarah Stein, and Ben
Luks-Morgan all at the front door, and
Hank Levine and Stephanie Stewart on
the Bar. Even our President-Elect
Boaz Markewitz teamed up with Ellen
Burman as first class dishwashers.
And, the night would not have been
possible without Danny Burman and
Fydor Shashkov doing everything in
their inimitable ways. Lights out.
Thank you one and all,
Art Sandack
destruction of the Warsaw Ghetto
during the Holocaust, and many other
tragic events in Jewish life down to
our own time.
Tallit and Tefillin are not worn at
the morning service on Tisha B'Av.
The essential liturgical event of the
fast is the reading of Aicha, the Book
of Lamentations. In many
synagogues, this book of dirges is
read by dim candlelight while sitting
on the floor or on low benches.
Though many, including earlier
Reform Jews, avoid this sad season,
all of us know this summer is not a
completely happy time here in the
United States: Health Care. The
Environment. Congressional
Investigations. Homelessness.
Refugees.
Israel also has its trials during this
period: B.D.S. Palestinian hatred.
Corrupt politicians. Jerusalem. Illegal
settlements. Hamas.
And, in the World, you know:
Terrorists. Global warming. North
Korea. Russia. Racism. Sexism.
Genocide.
Perhaps this year, we should
pause in our summertime joy, to
mourn our lot. Our song cannot
always be Hava Nagila. Neither is it
Don't Worry, Be Happy. An old
Jewish saying put it best:
“One who does not mourn on
Tisha B'Av will not deserve to see the
days of the Messiah, the Messianic
Age.”
More, now than ever, this Rabbi
wonders!!

When I first arrived here at
Congregation Kol Ami, I noticed many
of the leaves on our Tree of Life in the
hallway outside the Sanctuary were
missing and many of the plaques were
blank. I was puzzled and confused by
all of this since I felt very welcomed
but the Tree looked more lost than I
was, having recently lost my wife and
my property.
As my children and I have slowly
recovered and become intertwined in
our Community, I made a promise, not
only to myself but to HaShem to bring
the Tree of Life back to life. For me,
it's a reflection of our community,
seeing the tree barren of names. I felt
the Tree was telling me that this
community was dying. I couldn't let it
happen, seeing that my family had lost
so much and we were doing well. I
couldn't allow
that Tree to
experience what
we had.
Seeing the
names of my
family and
friends in the
Tree of Life
brings me a great
sense of joy and
accomplishment.
It also
represents a
historical
record of those
who came
before and and
those who will
come after.
I hope you can join with me in
bringing this beautiful tree to it's full
grandeur. Just contact the office and let
us know who you wish to honor.

Questions and Answers
Grave Matters by Carol Hochstadt
What is the difference in
pricing of grave sites in
B'nai Israel, Montefiore,
and Shaare Tzedek?
Many people expect our
pricing to be based on
location. If we did this, would
it be based on view? on
proximity to certain famous
people? or on proximity to a
tree or the road? No....plots in
all three of our cemeteries are
priced the same and our three
cemeteries get exactly the
same level of care. Looking
up at the grass, won't the view
be the same no matter where
you are located?
The rules allow two
cremations in one grave in
the B'nai Israel cemetery; is
the cost of the grave site
different if it will have a
second cremation?
Prior to 2014, we
essentially were giving a
"2-fer" by charging for one
grave and allowing two
cremations. Then, we adopted
a policy that is in effect at
most cemeteries that allow
cremations - charging for a
"second right to burial." The
charge for the second right to
burial is equal to half of what
that person would be charged
for a full plot at the time of
purchase.
That means that if the
second right to burial is
purchased "at need," when a
plot would cost $3,000, the
charge would be $1,500. If
the second right to burial was
purchased "pre-need," it
would be half of the
discounted "pre-need"
member or non-member price
of a plot - whichever applies.
Reducing the differential
between buying a separate
plot and sharing a plot may
discourage relatives from a
cremation based on grave site
costs.
Burying one casket and
one receptacle with cremains
in the same grave also
requires the purchase of a
second right to burial but may
also involve additional fees as
well. Remember that besides
the crowding factor, only one
headstone is permitted on a
single grave, even if two
people are buried in it.
Can I donate my body to the
University of Utah School of
Medicine and still be buried
in a Jewish cemetery?
Yes -- in our B'nai Israel
cemetery only. Donor bodies
are cremated after they are
studied - between three
months and two years after
the donation. If you have
specified that you want your
ashes returned to your family,
they may be buried
in a plot that you purchased or
in a plot purchased by your
estate. A wooden container
will be required, and the
burial request must come to
us from a mortuary. Just
remember that, if you plan to
donate your body and for that
reason have not purchased a
plot, your body might not be
accepted by the Department
of Neurobiology and
Anatomy. You should have a
Plan-B ready in case this
happens. Make sure your
relatives know if you want to
be buried, not cremated, in the
event that your donation is not
accepted. Without instructions
to the contrary, if you have
not purchased a grave site, the
relatives might opt for
cremation because it is less
expensive. Even common
circumstances such as
obesity, edema, or recent
major surgery may lead to a
body not being accepted.
Why do people get
motivated to buy a plot
when they attend a funeral
and then not follow
through?
This is very common.
When we have a death of a
person who was not
extremely old, mourners tell
Cemetery Association trustees
that they want to buy a plot
for themselves. At that
moment, they realize that if it
happened to this person, it
could happen to them. They

picture how difficult it would be for
their family to quickly select a plot in a
moment of chaos. Sometimes they go
so far as to request contracts and
information. But generally as soon as
the memory of the funeral fades, they
drop the ball. Why? Because none of
us wants to accept the fact that we will
die...and if we ignore it, maybe it will
go away. If you are one of these
people who is on a plot-buying-
rollercoaster, there is a solution. Take
the plunge, expend the funds, and then
tell your family that you have taken
this burden away from them. They will
thank you.
Thank you to Charlotte Kirkwood,
for her generous donation to
the Cemetery Association.
