Happy Summer (-ish)!We had a great time during Glitch Thanks to all who came along to the workshops and exhibitions. Keep an eye out for the Glitch Vending Machine in RUA RED. We’re really excited about our new exhibition A Very Normal Place by Northern Ireland photographer Adam Patterson. The exhibition features over 30 black and white photographic prints of Adam’s time in West Tallaght. Adam lived in Jobstown, met his neighbours, spoke to local people and involved them in the making of the work. We wanted to create an exhibition that was personal to west Tallaght. Check it out on page 1, you might spot some people you know!We’re also excited to announce the application dates for our annual Open Show. Find out how to apply on page 8.RUA RED loves supporting artists, in all art forms, ans this year we’re happy to offer support to a limited number of companies performing in this year’s Absolut Fringe by providing free, daytime rehearsal space. The evening helicopters drone overhead – out of reach like an annoying fly. Dogs are barking, big like lions, just another night in Jobstown. I have fallen in love with the life that flows through this place. There is an innocent beauty casting back to older times. Shooting in black and white I am trying to do this justice, a method of preserving the timelessness of the street games children play, of the friendliness people are offering me here.

3 A VERY NORMAL PLACEA Very Normal Place is a photographic exhibition by Northern Ireland photographer Adam Patterson about his time in West Tallaght. Gallery Two will feature three short films that follow moments in the lives of west Tallaght residents that Adam met during his time in the area, while Gallery One will feature over 25 photographic prints shot entirely on film, in black and white.

“I arrived with ideas and plans. Much had been written about WWest Tallaght and my aim was not to correct or offer an alternate view. The purpose was to record my personal time living in the area, through those that opened their doors to me. This work is about people - their faces, their gaze and their thoughts. The series depicts moments of my place in that corner of time. In every sense it is a collaboration with locals that took me into their world. These photographs could not have been formed without their guidance and trust.

I have always found photography to be a fantastic excuse to learn about people’s lives. Often my resulting photographs resemble a brief sketch of my limited time attempting to understand them. People are often cautious about a stranger with a camera and yet with a careful approach and explanation doors will open. This was certainly the case in Jobstown, Killinarden, Fettercain and Brookfield – areas I was warned about by people I met in other parts of Dublin. It is sad that infrequent and unfortunate events in-volving crime and violence can cast a dark show over an entire area. The reality is that these places are primarily ordinary in every sense, with people just trying to live their lives. Issues arise because others form judgment without taking the time to witness this normality. If they were to walk the streets and talk to the residents, they would likely meet people very much like themselves.

These photographs are an attempt to portray the routine, the moments that form a sense of what a place really means.”

Curated by Hilary Murray (2012 Curatorial Residency) Plastic Art sees the commissioning of new work, by artists Barbara Knezevic, Maghnild Ophøld and Seamus McCormack. The exhibition explores the notion of the biological network through its manipulations of form, plasticity through the re-working of material, seriality and the interplay of physical change with recognition.

The artist makes use of well-known memory images and changes the form of each to allow for other manipulations and remembrances to occur, as such, this interplay itself mimicsbiological plasticity. The creation of new form through the re-working and optimisation of old form creates a platform for the viewing of art on an intimate cellular level.

Barbara Knezevic is an Australian born artist practicing in Dublin. She is the recipient of a Project studio at Temple Bar Gallery and Studios, and the South Dublin County Council’s Artist’s Bursary Award. Barbara is the co-editor of the online publication Paper Visual Art Journal.

Magnhild Opdøl was born in Norway and is now living and working in Ireland. In 2011 she was awarded the Tony O’Malley Residency. She has widely exhibited both in Ireland and internationally, and her work is included in many public and private collections.

Seamus McCormack attended Limerick School of Art & Design and received a First Class BA Fine Art from DIT. He has recently completed a Masters in Fine Art at NCAD. Recent shows include Treading the boards, Ballina Arts Centre, Mayo and I’m Crying & Everything, Signal Arts Centre, Bray. He has also shown extensively in group shows in the UK and Ireland

One of the busiest shows of the year, the annual Open Show is a fantastic opportunity to have your work seen by curators and exhibit in one of the finest gallery spaces in the country.

We like to help you get the most out of our exhibitions and what better way than to become the artist yourself! The one hour Art Trolley sessions involve hands-on, take home activities and is led by artist Jane Fogarty.

This season you will explore the large black and white photographic prints of our Gallery One exhibition A Very Normal Place by Northern Ireland photographer Adam Patterson. The exhibition features over 30 photographs of Adam’s time in West Tallaght so you can have fun spotting local scenes and people!

The art trolley sessions are suitable for children aged 3 to 8 years accompanied by a parent / guardian. 2 children maximum per adult.

In the back of a small car, in a small aquarium, resides a small chameleon (Johnny Depp). The only living creature in his ‘environment,’ Rango has fancied himself as an actor, with several inanimate object as his friends and fellow thespians.

In his self-contained world, Rango’s ‘friends’ tell him that even though he fancies himself a hero, he needs a challenge.

Rango is always on the lookout for action and adventure, except the fake kind, where he directs it and acts in it.

After a car accident, he winds up in an old western town called Dirt. What this town needs the most is water, but they also need a hero and a sheriff. The thirsty Rango instantly takes on the role of both and selfishly agrees to take on the case of their missing water.

Outside a movie premiere, enthusiastic fan Peppy Miller literally bumps into the swashbuckling hero of the silent film, George Valentin.

The star reacts graciously and Peppy plants a kiss on his cheek as they are surrounded by photographers. The headlines demand: “Who’s That Girl?” and Peppy is inspired to audition for a dancing bit-part at the studio.

However as Peppy slowly rises through the industry, the introduction of talking-pictures turns Valentin’s world upside-down. Silent movie star George Valentin bemoans the coming era of talking pictures and fades into oblivion and self-destruction, but finds sparks with Peppy Miller, a young dancer lighting up talkies like no one else.

TALLAGHT YOUNG FILMMAKERS

Tallaght Young Filmmakers is an award-winning youth-led filmmaking group that meet weekly in RUA RED. They work with professional filmmakers to devise their own scripts and shoot their own films. Master classes with professional filmmakers focus on film critique, scriptwriting, sound, acting, directing, editing and more.

Jessica has just completed a dance film, Motion Sickness, as the first part of her residency at RUA RED. The film is a collaboration with award winning filmmaker John McIlduff and features three dancers, forty dead crows and the acclaimed Tallaght Youth Band.

Motion Sickness premiered at the international Dublin Dance Festival in May 2012 at the Irish Film Institute.

The second part of the dance residency will comprise of a live dance theatre production to be performed in Tallaght in the autumn. Jessica is interested in collaborating with professionals within the arts (dancers, writers, filmmakers, musicians) and with local groups from the Tallaght area.

Hilary Murray is a freelance curator based at the Irish Museum of Modern Art and has published articles in Circa Arts Magazine, Visual Artists News sheet and edits artdublin.blogspot.com.

ARTIST IN RESIDENCEMOLLY O’DWYER

Interdisciplinary in nature, Molly’s practice employs the use of video, performance, sculpture and installation, focusing in particular on the moving image within the context of contemporary art.

Hilary is curating ‘Plastic Arts’ as part of this season’s gallery programme, featuring newly commissioned work by Barbara Knezevic, Maghnild Ophold and Seamus McCormack (See page 5). She will also be producing a publication and writing alongside the exhibition. Hilary is a member of the curatorial panel for this year’s RUA RED Open Show.

RACHEL SWAN (Rachel had a Diva moment and demanded a can of Coca Cola with a straw or she wouldn’t participate!!)

HB: So, after your diva strop let’s start. What are you all about?RS: I’m Rachel Swan, goldsmith. I design and hand make contemporary silver and gold jewellery.

HB: What are you working on right now?RS: I’m working on my new collection of silver and 18 carat three dimensional cubes. They’ll be available to purchase from July.

HB: How did you get into this line of work?RS: I did a crafts course in the Liberties College. From there I trained as an apprentice with Alan Ardiff and then began working for myself.

HB: Did you find it hard coming from an apprenticeship where you’re working for someone else to setting up your own business?RS: Of course. It’s very challenging. You have to do everything yourself, I thought it was easy as making and selling, but there’s alot more involved in running a business!

HB: What is a normal day in your studio like?RS: I start off with a bit of admin like checking emails and orders. I then have a cup of tea from the RUA RED café, sit down at my work bench and begin making orders for my retail outlets or design and make new pieces.

HB: Where do you get your inspiration from? RS: I’m interested in architecture and sculpture, you can see these influences in my pieces. I try

Rachel Swan is a goldsmith based in Dublin. Entering the crafts industry through the traditional route of an apprenticeship, Rachel introduced her own range of contemporary jewellery in 2008.Working predominantly in sterling silver she gives all her pieces a signature satin finish that ensures a beautiful tactile surface.Since creating her first collection in 2008 Rachel has been the winner of two Future Maker Awards from the Crafts Council of Ireland.

HB: Who are you?MCB: I’m a playwright director /producer/actor and artistic director of Garbo Productions Theatre Company. Garbo’s main activities include Theatre production, Theatre-in education plays, drama and theatre based programmes and community projects. I also have ambitions to bring Garbo into the film production arena; we co-produced our first short ‘Ray’ in 2010 with ‘Hoohox Productions’ as part of the Darlklight Film Festival.

HB: What are you working on right now?MCB: Actually it’s been our most exciting year to date. I’ve just been accepted onto the artist’s panel of Dublin City Council. I‘ve also just recently reached completion on 3 major projects. I was commissioned to write direct and produce my play ‘Rudy’ by Dublin City Public libraries. This whole process started in 2011 and climaxed recently with a really successful tour of the play in libraries as part of the ‘Graffiti Art or Vandalism?’ for DCPL. I’ve also just launched a book of stories ‘Tales of Kishogue Cross’ which was the climax of an intercultural programme for Lucan East Educate Together School in which I co –authoured with parents from the school. Also our schools drama workshop programme ‘Garbo Code Name Green Warp’ climaxed with a parade of flags by the school studentsinvolved in the S.D.C.C chambers to launch Eco week 2012. Now I am looking at funding for new projects for 2013 setting up drama workshops in RUA RED and doing research on ‘No Way Out’ a teen novel which I hope to self-publish via the web.

HB: You work with a lot of children, I imagine this can be quite rewarding. MCB: After a performance of Rudy in the ILAC library a wom-en approached me and said a teenager she knew had gone through a terrible time because of peer pressure and that she

thought the play was really powerful because it so clearly showed the impact that peer pressure had on teenager’s lives while still giving them hope. This teenager in question had sadly apparently taken their own life. She said she thought the play should be put on in every school in Ireland. This meant so much to me; I want my plays to give a clear voice to people especially those who can’t always speak for themselves.
