I’m sure that most of you saw the posters around the village telling you that the Village Hall would shut in December unless more active members of the CCA were found. Well, the CCA had an amazing response with fifteen people offering to help. There was a meeting in May where Andy Collinge offered to become Chairman temporarily. Martin Sanderson was very happy to have Christina Eggleton offer to take on the role of treasurer. They will work out a handover period between them. Martin has been the treasurer of the CCA for 35 years and for that we thank him dearly! Certainly, that’s dedication for you! Lee Harrison and Carl Whalley will sort out hall maintenance between them and if there are any jobs that need tendering for, then Charlotte Fuller has volunteered to get quotes from people. The role of secretary is being shared between Dot Hunter and Claire Sidnell. Claire has also offered to bring the CCA into the 21st century and keep a website/Facebook page maintained. Finally, Trisha Mennell has taken on the role of Social Secretary. There were quite a few people willing to help organise different events so Trisha will organise meetings to come up with some good ideas. Some ideas already given were boot fairs; mind, body and spirit fairs; events for the children; Hallowe’en parties; New Year’s Eve parties, etc. This is what we wanted. More people to take a share of the jobs so that doing those jobs will actually become a pleasure again! Lynne, editor If you have any queries about the Village Hall, don’t hesitate to contact myself or Tamsin, not Jo please. (Numbers on page 2)

Ernie Says...
Many of you may know that my ministry responsibilities stretch across 4 churches in the area and each of them is very different in character and culture. Village life here in Canewdon is a great reminder of just how diverse but interconnected this community really is. It’s almost a tangible life that runs through every aspect of community living, this I have witnessed first-hand over the last couple of months. I have had the utter joy of presiding over Baptism for Bertie Dalton in February and Sophie Phipps in May, it was joyous to be with the families as they committed their children to the Christian faith, but alongside this joy comes times of sadness as we gathered to say goodbye to some well-known and well-loved characters of Canewdon, Ann Lane & Don Bedford, 2 people who will be sorely missed by the whole community. It was a privilege to be able to minister at their services and I marvelled at the way so many people came to offer support to the families concerned, this is a part of village life I hope you never lose. Life is full of ups, downs and turns and I believe that we have a God who travels that journey with each of us, even if we choose to deny it, I want to assure you that I do and will continue to hold all the folks in Canewdon in my daily prayers and I thank you for your interconnectedness; it is a great reminder of what village life should be. Stay Blessed
Revd Ernie

Canewdon Parish Council Annual Report Chairman’s Report
It has been another busy & interesting year for the parish, but it has also been a year of continuing health problems & changing circumstances for some of our Councillors. We wish them all well for the future.
During the year we were pleased to welcome Myriam Sohail onto the Parish Council. Myriam hopes to provide a closer link between the Parish Council & the residents of Wallasea & has already been very helpful & active in parish business, particularly setting up & running the Parish Council’s Facebook page. The Parish Council also has a new website & email address.
On land owned by Canewdon Charities we continue to provide & support the allotments in Anchor Lane. Some shrub planting was carried out in 2018 so as to enhance & improve the boundaries of the land. Councillor Shirley Kirton, as the Parish Council’s allotment representative, is doing a really good job of keeping the allotments running & looking tidy. She has also managed to let several of the plots that were previously vacant.
We have made applications to the Community Initiative Fund for grants to replace 2 pieces of equipment in the play area & a green gym in the recreation ground, although we are still awaiting the outcome.
The last public meeting regarding the Neighbourhood Plan was held in December 2018. The process was put on hold because of some significant changes to the way in which housing development is likely to be allocated by Rochford District Council & it was considered prudent to allow that process to progress further before we got to drafting our planning policies. However, I recently attended some training, when advice was sought about this matter & reported to a recent Parish Council meeting. Based on this advice, Councillors have decided to resume the Neighbourhood Plan process, but only with consultation & close liaison with RDC.
Neighbourhood Watch has also been kick-started again with a public meeting in March 2019. Whilst not well attended, those who were there were enthusiastic & had some good ideas for the future.
Our District Councillors have also supported & assisted us with various issues throughout the year & we continue to appreciate their support.
We understand that the 40mph speed restriction for Lark Hill Road has been agreed, although we are unsure as to when the change will be made. The Parish Council, with the persistence of a particular District Councillor, is also pursuing Essex County Council regarding the unacceptable condition of the footways in Sycamore Way & requesting better directional signs at some of the important road junctions in the parish.
9
Community Speed Watch continues & does have a positive impact on reducing the speed of vehicles on the roads in & around our parish.
The Christmas Buffet was not as well attended as previous years, but those who were there seemed to enjoy the event, made all the more enjoyable by the performance of the School Choir.
Our Clerk, Kelly, is paramount in ensuring that the Parish Council operates in accordance with all requirements & she continues to be an extremely valuable asset to the parish. She has now completed a Level 5 foundation degree in Community Governance, with a distinction, & is also continuing to complete Level 6, which will result in a BA Honours degree. We also have her to thank for organising the Christmas Buffet, but also for so much more.
I would like to thank all of our Councillors for giving up their time for the benefit of the parish. All of their time is given voluntarily, with no remuneration & they are often involved not only in attending the various meetings of the Parish Council, but also training courses & representing the parish at other forums.
We look forward to a successful 2019/2020.
Lynne Van Houten. Chairman of Canewdon Parish Council.

I found this report in a 1963 Southend Standard and thought you’d find it
amusing! Canewdon Easter Parade
Whatever the weather, Spring was certainly in the air at Canewdon Darby
and Joan Club on Wednesday week, when both the men and women took
part in an Easter Bonnet Parade. Winner of the women’s competition was
Mrs Morgan in a delightful creation featuring hand made flowers. Second
was Mrs W. Brown. Mr J. Rollins was the champion hat maker for the men
and runner up was Mr W. Wright. The hard task of judging the hats was
given to Mrs K. Pudney, who was presented with a bouquet. A rummage
and bring and buy sale was held, and members sang birthday greetings for
Mrs Gale. Speaker on Wednesday was Rev. N. Kelly who told of his visit to
Russia and illustrated his remarks with slides. Coun. Mrs R. Fox presented
each member of the D. and J. with a packet of cigarettes as an Easter gift.

The Beavers have had their first sleepover under canvas at the renewal of promise camp, which all of our groups attended, and as usual had a fantastic time taking part in activities
including rock climbing, zip wire, and laser tag. They have also had a visit from a local specialist Paramedic (thank you David Elkington) who taught the beavers what to do in an emergency and how to wrap a bandage; all of which will go towards their first aid badge. For more information contact [email protected]
As well as the renewal of promise camp, the cubs have made ballistas, seeing who could shoot an egg the furthest. They made a scouting TV advert using stop motion, and came up with 100 forms of transport, with all
session activities going towards the Essex 100 badge. They also had a treasure hunt around the village and had a go at archery. For more information contact [email protected]
The scouts enjoyed a Medieval tournament with apple dunking, archery and jousting. They constructed and cooked from cardboard box ovens.
They made outside campfires and cooked on them. For more information contact [email protected]
Congratulations to Alfie, Gracie, Josh and Harry for receiving their Sliver scout awards; and Archie for getting his Gold scout award......Fantastic!!

Canewdon Then and Now - Lambourne Hall
Parts of Lambourne Hall date to 1267, making it the oldest non-religious building in the Rochford area. It was named after William de Lambourne who had gained ownership of the property via marriage to Hawise de Polsted. William was named Sheriff of Essex in 1286 but his debts soon mounted up. When he died in 1300, he was still in possession of Lambourne Manor in Epping which included Lambourne Hall in Canewdon. This was passed to his son James. The property passed to the Sutton family in 1361. It seems that William Totham was renting Lambourne Hall when he bought it for 200 marks in 1376. The Totham family had a side chapel at Canewdon church to the north of the chancel that no longer survives. The memorial remnants, thought to be from this chapel, that include a painted head, are mounted in the bricked up south doorway in the chancel and the Totham coat of arms (three rows of diamonds in a 3-3-1 configuration) is on the second pillar in the church. The inheritance eventually ended up with William Totham’s great grand-
daughter Thomasine Barrington who married three times and died a widow in 1498. She was buried in Canewdon church and her memorial stone that previously had brass effigies of herself and her three husbands now forms part of the porch floor. Thomasine’s son, William Lunsford, from her first marriage, inherited the property but did not live in Canewdon. For the next 400 years up to the 1920’s Lambourne Hall was a tenanted farm,
15
the owners/landlords being the Lunsford family up to 1581 and then the Campion family, both living in Sussex. The current family have owned Lambourne Hall since the 1920’s. During WW2 it was occupied by the army and on December 8th 1944, a V2
rocket landed nearby resulting in damage to the house and buildings. This was one of five V2’s that hit Canewdon in 1944 and 1945, but only two caused any damage and luckily, no one was killed.
Thanks to Brian Meldon for supplying this information.

The Canewdon Trust (The Educational Foundation and Poor’s Charity)
The Canewdon Trust is a charity made up from money and land donations dating back some 400 years. Originally, these donations were made to help the poor in the village. In the mid 1800’s, some of the money started to be used towards educating the poor children in the village. In 1905, an order of the commissioners was made in which the whole of the endowment was to be used for educational purposes with the exception of £10 annually to be held for the relief of the poor. Around this time, the Trust owned quite a few properties in the village which they rented out. As the 1900’s progressed, some of these properties were sold off as they were too costly to repair. The only building that the Trust still owns today is the Trust House, formally known as the School House, built in 1863. Canewdon School is now and has been since 1952, a Church of England voluntary controlled school. This means that the Education Authority and school are responsible for the education, staffing and building works but the Trust still owns the land. Some of the other land owned by the Trust are the allotments, the village pond and Finches Nature Reserve. Money has been invested wisely over the years and it is the interest from this money that is used for grants. The Trust is administered on a voluntary basis by 12 Trustees, a group of local people. There are 5 co-opted, 6 nominated by the Parish Council and one ex-officio who is the current vicar. Anyone who lives in the village can apply to the Canewdon Trust for financial aid regardless of their financial situation. The Canewdon Educational Foundation can help children and young adults up to the age of 25. Examples of reasons to apply might be: • Dancing/swimming/riding etc. lessons. • Extra tuition for a core subject. • Bus fares to and from school or college
If you are elderly or struggling to make ends meet, then you may need financial help to pay for essential items such as spectacles, aids for disability etc. These are examples of how the Poor’s Charity could help you. All applications are handled with complete discretion. You will need to send in a receipt with an accompanying letter or email to: The Canewdon Trust, Trust House, Anchor Lane. [email protected].

In July, the meeting will be on the third Monday as usual, I.e., Monday 15th July at 8.00pm. There will be no meeting in August as some of us will be on holiday, but we can give advance notice of the following meeting which will be on Monday, 16th September, once again in St Nicholas’ church at 8.00pm. Please come if you would like to join us in praying for anyone in our village or if you

We thoroughly enjoyed the quiz that Carol 's daughter Lisa set for us on the
22nd May. We are all very compe&&ve - well some more than others! So a big
thank you Lisa for a fun a-ernoon.
Carol has made final arrangements for our trip to Barleylands later this month
and I will let you know how we got on in the next Brooms&ck. Fingers crossed
for good weather but regardless I know we shall have a good &me.
This year has flown by. We are
nearly half way through 2019
and Wednesday mee&ngs seem
to come round really quickly.
Bingo is always a popular
ac&vity. Our caller Janice always
makes it a lot of fun, and there is
nothing like being able to call
out "HOUSE" and collect our
winnings! Then we have a cuppa
- or cakes and wine for birthday
celebra&ons - along with plenty
of conversa&on pu<ng the
world to rights as well as a bit of
harmless gossip!
We were very sad to learn of the awful fall that our member Janet sustained
way back in April which has led to her needing a lengthy stay in hospital.
Thankfully she is slowly recovering and we send her love and best wishes, and
hope to see her soon.
I hope all villagers enjoy the many events taking place in Canewdon over the
next few months - have a lovely summer everyone.
Regards,
Rosemarie Barker - Chairman

CANEWDON HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY
Our garden visit to Hullbridge in May was a deligh?ul event. The weather was
beau&ful, and the evening warm and sunny. The garden was a haven of
tranquillity and so full of lovely trees, flowers, and shrubs. The event was
hosted by Sandra Hall, and she made us feel so welcome, and also provided
tea, coffee, and delicious cakes. Many members went home with their arms
full of plants which Sandra had generously offered to share with us, for a small
dona&on to Macmillan.
Our Speaker in July will be Frances Boardman who will give a presenta&on on,
"Plants That Have Changed The World". This sounds an interes&ng subject,
and we look forward to welcoming Frances, and hear what she has to say.
July is also the month that we hold our photographic compe&&on and as a
reminder the categories this &me are, A Flowering Tree, A Coastal Scene,
Curiosity, and Animal Magic.
Here's to a lovely summer, and an abundance of home grown flowers, fruit,
and vegetables.

CANEWDON
WOMEN'S INSTITUTE
I can’t believe how fast this year is going by. In April we held our Annual
Mee&ng and Elec&on of Officers, with our newly elected Federa&on
Chairman in aDendance. With no volunteers for change the same
commiDee and Officers were all re-elected. A-erwards we all enjoyed
cheese and wine and a chat.
For our May mee&ng Rob Thorogood spoke about the Canadian Pacific
Railway and the Birth of Canada. A most interes&ng talk and slide show.
We intend asking him for further talks as he was so clearly spoken.
Our monthly lunches are s&ll well supported and now “The Ladies That
Work” have arranged to have a monthly dinner. The first one will be at
Monsoon in Rochford. We try and get a variety of speakers and chari&es
each month and so for June, The Limbless Associa&on will be coming
along with details of their organisa&on.
In July we have an Open Mee&ng when all are invited to listen to The
Royal Na&onal Lifeboat Ins&tute talk. Our guests are asked for £3
entrance money and this will include a glass of wine. We look forward to
seeing you then.
