“Look at life through the windshield, not the rear-view mirror” – Byrd Baggett -

Dear Reader,

Welcome once again to Leyton Life magazine, thank you for picking up this copy and any others you may have over the years. Leyton Life will be taking a break for a while, so you will no longer be able to pick a copy up, the web-site will still be available along with an electronic version of the magazine.

If there are any readers out there who are not familiar with the internet, do get in touch and I will arrange for a paper version for you.I have been publishing since 2007 and need to take time out and see which direction to move the publication forward in; this will also free up my time for personal developments. There will still be opportunities for individuals to make their contributions, so keep sending in feedback, editorials and gossip, competitions will still be available. It has always been interesting getting various responses from readers over the years, special thanks to those who would write in pointing out any grammatical errors; these did become less frequent as time went on.

I will be on the lookout for networking opportunities with members of the community and businesses; this will enable the community element to live on which is significant. The CnC page will continue to be a regular feature as the girls have enjoyed their time in getting their contributions together for the younger audience.

Have a great time browsing through this edition, great feedback on pages 14-15, our Councillor took a previous article rather personally; at least he reads the magazine! I wonder if another response will be emailed over?

As a proponent of holistic therapies you can read p8 and see what you make of it, just remember to consult your doctor with any changes you may want to make. Volunteering is the back-bone of a lot of free services being pro-vided nationally and locally so please stop at p18.

All the very best in what you, just remember you are the author of your destiny.

Until next time take care,

Yasmin Allen

RamadanRamadan, Arabic for intense heat falls on the 9th month of the Muslim calendar and starts on June 29th. This is a time where Muslims fast during daylight hours, this period is used as a time to reflect upon religious devotions. Many give their money and time to charity during this time. Individuals are encouraged to read the Quran, some recite the whole Quran and take part in competitions around the country. Ramadan begins with the sighting of a new moon.

Eid al-FitrEid al-Fitr, 29th July is the first day of the Islamic month of Shawwal, symbolising the end of the month-long fast of Ramadan. There are regional variations depending on when the new moon is sited. Many gather together with friends and family giving gifts and money donations to charities, a time of celebrating with new clothes and various foods. This is also seen as a good time to forgive people, and make a fresh start.

Happy Eid feel free to write in with how you performed Ramadan and celebrated Eid.

A Holistic approachHolistic therapies are being used more widely by the Western society; individuals are turning to complimentary therapies to bring back serenity to their busy lifestyles. Whereas the customary solution is to take a pick me up drug which many GP’s prescribe, or you can purchase from over the counter.

The user can become addicted to these, and many medications have a variety of side effects; this is often how a vicious circle of prescribed medicine is born. You take one drug then another to combat effects of the first and then so on. Most fatigue can be dealt with the correct food, drink, exercise, and rest. There is a time and place for modern medicine, but currently a holistic approach to common ailments is not investigated enough. This is due to a different angle of education given to medical students who turn out to become medical practitioners. Far too much emphasis is given to manufactured pharmaceutical drugs, not enough on a person’s diet. Many doctors are not trained in nutrition, having researched various avenues with modern medicine and holistic approaches of food, drink and complimentary therapies it is clear that people need to take more responsibility in knowing what they put into their bodies. Our bodies are like a vehicle, you put the wrong fuel in and the vehicle will stop working and costing the owner a lot of money to repair. Our bodies are just the same, keeping eating and drinking unnatural things and the body starts to break down. Research is showing the

negative effects of consuming processed foods, ready-made foods from shops contain strange varieties of sugars and salts and other Frankenstein ingredients, which are not always easy to interpretate. Although there is more growing pressure for clearer food labelling people have become so accustomed to purchasing convenience foods they have forgotten how to determine what is good for their bodies. The basic rule is to go back to basics, start eating more meals that have been prepared from scratch, with fresh ingredients. A number of retailers and Chefs do meal plans for those on a financial budget and on restricted time schedules. We need to re-programme ourselves to become one with food, experiment how our body feels after having eaten certain things. What are the energy levels like? Water is the main thing we should be drinking throughout the day, and leaving out caffeine and drinks. Many of us are addicted to tea and coffee without even knowing. Even 1-2 cups a day has a hold over you, try going without for a week and you will feel the withdrawal symptoms. Complimentary techniques such as Meditations, Reiki, spiritual healing, and reflexology are on the increase

although not medically promoted a lot of open minded physicians do see the benefits and do recommend some patients to try them out. There are still some religious groups who teach against such therapies without actually examining the practise and researching the benefits. Complimentary therapies are practiced as just that, and not a religious practice. For those of you who may be in this predicament look at it as a gift from the creator, where individuals can use their own bodies to try and heal themselves. Surely using simple breathing techniques, and mediations, natural crystals should be tried before being rejected inappropriate. Follow your intuition, and you will find the right approach. -Hippocrates Natural forces within us are the true healers of disease. -HippocratesLeave your drugs in the chemist’s pot if you can cure the patient with food.-Hippocrates, 420 BCThere are two great medicines: Diet and Self-Control.- Max Bircher, 1962A cheerful heart is good medicine.- Bible, Proverbs 17:22www.whfoods.com

Bored with your spare time?Do you have skills that could be taught to others in a group setting?

Are you happy to just go along with the flow and help by being present?

Are you a people person who likes a good chat, or do you like to be creative and be-hind the scenes without much contact with members of the public?

There are a lot of volunteering opportuni-ties in this borough; many of these belong to local independent organisations, that run charitable events and hold regular groups of some kind. Volunteers are re-quired to help make these events possible,

most don’t need a long term commitment and you can say how often you would be able to volunteer.

Volunteering is a great way of gaining experience, if you are out of work or in-be-tween jobs or retired. It is also good way to keep connected with the community and socialising. If you are an organisation who may want to recruit some volunteers get in touch by either email phone or post details on page 2, and a networking opportunity can be put on the website for you. Are you someone who could spare some time, then also get in touch you could be matched with a great opportunity.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Place to go this summer?

The Olympic village has a park called Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, which is a very nice place to go especially in the summer. It has a big outdoor water fountain which you can run through or stand in and get soaked. This is a great way to cool down if it is hot. There are also rock climbing walls for all ages, and other fun equiptment. Make sure you bring a set of dry clothes!

Local Reflections...It was great to open an email from Councillor Robbins, who had read the article about betting shops and wanted to make his contribution...

Dear Leyton Life and Ann-Marie Abbasah,

I read your item on betting offices in Bakers Arms in your May/June edition. The issues you raise about the proliferation of betting shops is spot on. They are a negative service on our high streets when too many huddle together. As Waltham Forest council we are constantly opposing their growth.

The Bakers Arms pub in particular changed over from a public house to a betting shop almost overnight. It did not ask for permission because it did not need to. The council had no authority to give or refuse a license. As the building was previously a public house it had automatic rights to set up a betting shop.

Like wise the most recent application for a betting shop in Leyton High Road directly opposite a competitor was refused by our council and overturned on appeal. Yet another Paddy Power. We are always campaigning to get appropriate legislation for councils to stop the constant growth of betting shops.Recent changes proposed by the Coalition government fell far to short and gave betting shop companies all the support they need to continue invading our high streets.

So your comment that the council hands out licenses is wrong.

Can I also point out that credit should have been given on the exceptional shop front investment particularly in Bakers Arms which wasn’t mentioned at all.

Baker Arms shop fronts have received a major make over and the new pavement area provides a much better shopping experience. All of this has been provided by 100% grants to shop owners and landlords.

Our recent investment in Leyton High Road and Francis Road among others, has revitalised shops and Victorian facades. So far this investment has reached nearly 300 shops across the borough.

We intend to do more and it would be wonderful if you could support our campaign to give councils more control over betting shop licenses. Some recognition of our £12 million plus investment in high street shops would also be welcome.

Best wishes,Chris RobbinsLeader Waltham Forest Council.

Dear ReadersThank you to the Council for

the great looking shop fronts, cynics have said this was a project started for the benefit of the Olympics and now Tour de France. Business owners have said it is about time the council did something to improve the area especially the amount they have accumulated over the years from business rates! Although the monies have been obtained by a grant more should be done to restore services, instead a number of services are being cut. I came across a lady whose daughter classed as disabled will no longer be able to attend a day centre on Markhouse Road because she is in a residential home. The day centre provides a different type of service to users and now users will have nothing to look forward to just be stuck in their residential homes, where activities are limited.

Christian Kitchen has provided meals to homeless and vulnerable people for 25 years, and the council tried to evict them from the Mission Grove car park. A High Court judge has ruled that a local authority’s decision to terminate a charity’s licence to operate ‘soup kitchen’ at one of the council’s car parks was unlawful. How much is this court case costing the taxpayer?Food stall holders lost money during the Olympics as they were misinformed about the route people would be taking to the Olympic village, individuals

Page 15: July august 2014 fp

July/August 2014 - Page 15

lost between £16,000-£25000 as far as I know at the time of contacting N.London Business and Council no one was taking responsibility between Skateco UK Ltd.and the Council. A lot of businesses closed due to these losses, and as far as I know have not been refunded a penny by either party.

There was the closing of Walthamstow dog stadium, and the site was left unused for a number of years.

The Walthamstow arcade was also left flattened and has finally started to have developments

take place, people had to leave their homes and businesses after many years of having been there. Going past a site which was not being used or developed for the number of years of was not beneficial to the previous users or the location.

Departure of Chief executive Andrew Kilburn raised many question which went unanswered by the council. “Cllr Davis added that he believed the chief executive was forced out because of his decision to commission an independent review which revealed widespread financial mis-management across the authority.” The Liberal Democrats were the ones knocking on peoples

doors around Leyton and getting petitions signed, to stop the betting shop to be given a licence by the Council. Is this the reason why the Council refused the licence in the first instance? Due to a lack of time the council or Liberal Democrats were not approached for any comments. But if any of them are reading this feel free to get in touch and set the record straight. The Councils free fortnightly newspaper has been a bone of contention between some who think it should be scrapped and monies used elsewhere in the borough. But even after the Government introduced

legislation to restrict Councils use of monies to fund self-promoting publications at the cost of taxpayers our councils continues. “ Waltham Forest council’s refusal to abide by the law and restrict publication of its fortnightly free sheet is “pathetic and absurd”, according to a vice-chairman of the Conservative Party.” Although there are improvements being made in Waltham Forest there is still a lack of transparency. Leyton life is not set out to criticise the Council, but provide a different perspective to it’s readers, just like the council continues to do through their own publication by promoting all the wonderful things it is doing. Independent

media is independent for a reason, previously there has been very little interaction between the council and Leyton life especially when asked questions of an awkward nature of council activities.

We need to build strong foundations between residents, businesses and the council; currently there is a void with only a minority being involved. Local businesses previously have said they have not been able to win tenders with the Council, has this situation changed? How can it change? Is the Council willing to work with individuals and businesses that may not share the same views but have a vision for the borough?

Spot the Difference

Rakhi 10th of AugustRaksha Bandhan - the Indian festival of tying the knot of amity, brotherhood and long life, is a symbol of seeking divine bliss. Not for the ‘self’. But for man on whose wrist the thread is tied. ‘Raksha’ is the word for pro-tection. ‘Bandhan’ is the bond. So it signifies the bond of protection. The protection is from the dark hands of the evils and against all perils.

The protection that connotates - not just phys-ical, but the spiritual one as well. This whole ritual of typing this sacred thread symbolizes the sister’s love and prayers for her brother’s well-being, and the brother’s lifelong vow to protect her. The brothers also give gifts or money to their sisters in return. This festival is generally observed by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains.
