The Spring luncheon of Vero BeachOpera’s Amici Society recently held atthe Grand Harbor Clubhouse celebratedthe end of the opera’s most successful

season on rec-ord.

Amici means“friends” in Ital-ian, and the Ami-ci Society con-sists of VeroBeach Operamembers whoare committed tothe mission andvision of the op-era and supportsits e�orts in somany ways, ac-cording to Dr.Joan Ortega-Co-wan, presidentof the Vero BeachOpera.

“As a nonpro�t organization, wecould not bring the talented profession-als to Vero Beach that we do without theincredible support of our Amici Societymembers,” said Ortega-Cowan. “Fromhousing the performers, to selling play-bill advertising, to Community Out-

Matthew Martin is the Visiting NurseAssociation of the Treasure Coast’snewest Associate of the Quarter.

As a Help Desk Specialist for theVNA’s IT Department, Martin is taskedwith troubleshooting anything from

printer malfunctions tophone system failures. Inthe short time he hasbeen part of the VNAfamily, Martin has exhib-ited VNA’s core values inhis everyday work.

Associates of theQuarter are nominated by

their colleagues for consistently demon-

strating their commitment to VNA’s corevalues: integrity, collaboration, account-ability, respect and excellence.

According to Information TechnologyManager Nathan Roadhouse, “From thetime that Matt joined the VNA, and es-pecially this quarter, he has performedabove and beyond the requirements forhis position.”

Originally from Indiana, Martin

moved to Vero Beach in 2015. He earnedhis bachelor’s degree in informationtechnology management and securityfrom Indian River State College in 2016,and has been part of VNA’s team for justunder a year.

Upon being declared Associate ofQuarter, Martin said, “Hard work ismuch easier with a strong, supportiveteam. I couldn’t ask for better.”

reach, to grant writing, to serving onscholarship committees, the impor-tance of these volunteers cannot beover-stated.”

Two Amici Society members whoconsistently go above and beyond arePaul and Sue Gauthier. They have beenthe volunteer coordinators for the past�ve seasons for the Homestay program,which places visiting artists in localhomes instead of in hotels. This pastseason they coordinated accommoda-tions for 69 artists, equating to 265 hotelroom nights.

In addition to being the Homestaycoordinators, the Gauthiers coordinateall of the advertising sales for VeroBeach Opera’s playbills, which under-writes the cost of producing the profes-sional playbills. This husband-wifeteam not only provide a valuable serviceto the organization, they help the non-pro�t save money, which is a winningcombination.

Other “Amici” members who chair orserve on various committees are: LouisLawson (charitable giving/vocal schol-arship); Wayne Kleinstiver (Opera Stud-ies); Bill LaViolette (fundraising); Con-nie Derman (historian); Susan Grand-pierre (grants); Kendra Haines (pianoscholarship); Joe and Carol Palowich(community outreach/social events/competition); Linda Sposato (MusicAngels Education Fund); Joanne Web-ster (membership/social events); Don-na Lindsay (Cultural Council liaison);Bob Webster (competition and pianocoordinator/Cultural Council liaison);

and Marcia Loewinger (social events). Vero Beach Opera o�cers are: Dr.

Joan Ortega-Cowan, president and ex-ecutive director; Roman Ortega-Cowan,artistic director; Dr. Robert Loewinger,vice president; Rosemary Gagliardi, re-cording secretary; and Ed Halsey, trea-surer. The 2019 opera season is extra spe-cial as Vero Beach Opera celebrates its30th year. The season starts with“Carmen” on Jan. 13 with Met artist Da-vid Pershall as the toreador. On Feb. 2,there will be a Bel Canto Concert withRossini, Bellini and Donizetti arias, du-ets and ensembles. And the world fam-ous tenor Marcello Giordani returnsMarch 19-22 with a MasterClass, Com-petition and Rising Stars Concert.
