St. Mark’s Parish Nurse Ministry: Water

Did you know that about 70% of our body is com-

posed of water? Everyone needs water to stay healthy

and survive. Water is essential to the body.

Drink WATER Instead of Coffee or Soda

If you drink too much coffee, dehydration may occur

because coffee is a diuretic and causes the body to

loose water.

ARE YOU Thirsty?

Thirst is a signal that your body needs water. Keep

hydrated with water before you become thirsty and

dehydrated, especially in the summer heat.

Function of Water in the Body

Water is the primary component of every cell in your

body and all body fluids including blood, lymph, sal-

via, cerebrospinal fluid, intestinal, gastric, and pancre-

atic juices.

Complications of Dehydration Extreme dehydration can cause damage to the kid-

neys, brain and heart. Occurs in episodes of severe

vomiting and diarrhea. The most common signs of

dehydration: thirst, dry lips, sunken eyes, cold hands

or feet, rapid breathing, and rapid heart rate. If you or

someone you know becomes severely dehydrated, it is

important that you get to a hospital immediately.

...a note from your

Parish Administrator Dear Parishioners,

- I pray that everyone is having a good summer!

There are many interesting saints whose feast days fall

in the months of July and August. Over the next few

weeks, we will learn about a number of them.

- St. Benedict (July 11): After founding twelve com-

munities of monks at Subiaco, Italy, Benedict of

Norcia (480 AD - 21 March 547) traveled

to Montecassino where he established a monastery

and wrote "The Rule." This simple set of guide-

lines for how the life of a monk should be lived has

become one of the most influential works in all of

Western Christendom. Interestingly, vocations

seemed to run in the family as his twin sister St.

Scholastica founded communities of contemplative

nuns.

- St. Bonaventure (July 15): Known as "the seraphic

doctor," was born at Bagnoregio, in the Lazio region

of central Italy, in 1221. A Franciscan, he did much for

his Order and composed The Life of St. Francis . He

also assisted at the translation of the relics of St.

Anthony of Padua.
