Prayer for Hurricane Season

O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed your order

and returned to its former quietude. You are still the Master of land and sea. We live the shadow of a danger over which we have no control: the gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awake from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land and spread chaos and disaster. Dur-ing this hurricane season we turn to you, loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with the passing of time. O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our Beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with you Son in our behalf, so that spared from the calam-ities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of grat-itude, we will walk in the footsteps of your divine Son to reach heavenly Jerusalem where a stormless eternity awaits us. Amen. Bishop Maurice Shexnayder

Visit the website for more information and to register www.helpourmarriage.com. Prayer Calendar for Priests and For Seminarians Support vocations and perseverance of vocations to the priesthood by praying for a Priest and a Seminarian each day. The July calendar is available on the table at the main entrance of the church.

Centennial Campaign As a few pledge cards continue to trickle in, we would encourage anyone planning to make a gift to do so this week. (Cards are available under the stairwell, near the main entrance of the Church.) In that way, we will be able to run the numbers and give you a final total for our parish, which is already over our assigned goal. Please keep in mind: All checks for the campaign must be made out to "Centennial Campaign", not St. Patrick Church. (We cannot run these checks through our books without complicating things.) Also, if you have filled out a pledge card, you will be con-tacted by the Campaign office at the diocese on how to continue to donate over the course of your pledge. Please do not send your check to the parish. And again, many thanks for the generosity of so many. From the Pastor’s Desk

You may have noticed we are moving toward an election this fall. On this 4th of July weekend, it seems like a good time to draw some attention to the social justice teaching that is offered to help us in exercising what we call “Faithful Citizenship”. As we celebrate freedom, it is good recognize the importance of being engaged in one of the most important tools we have for preserving freedom, the right to vote.

This week, and next week, we will be including inserts prepared by our U.S. Bishops on this topic of Faith-ful Citizenship. The two inserts (Part I & Part II) are a summary of a longer document entitled “Forming Con-sciences for Faithful Citizenship”. You can find this document online at the Bishops’ site (faithfulcitizenship.org), or by searching for “Faithful Citizenship”. There is also a link from our parish website to a variety of resources on this topic that I have gathered together. Reading the entire document is highly recommended. Otherwise, the summary will at least offer the basic ideas.

This document on faithful citizenship has an interesting history. The first version was issued in 1976. It not only had a different title—Political Responsibility— but a different focus. At that time, it stressed the im-portance for Catholics and all Christians to be involved in the political process, not least by voting. It also made clear that for the believer, the challenge is to apply the truths of the Gospel and the social teaching of the Church to the issues of the day. This allows the faith to guide and direct one’s electoral decisions. One cannot leave one’s faith at the door of the voting booth.

Since then, the document has been revised every 4 years, and expanded to include more teaching on the basic themes of Catholic Social Teaching (dignity of human persons, family and the common good, preferential option for the poor, etc.) and to address a greater number of specific issues (e.g., human life, religious freedom, migration, the right to health care, caring for the environment, etc.). Yet even in speaking of these specific issues, the document in no way tells anyone how to vote or endorses any candidate or political party. That decision is left up to the individual, who hopefully has formed his or her conscience in accord with these teachings on justice and human dignity. The document provides valuable guidance for all.

On a personal note, I have to say that this year’s political campaigning is some of the ugliest I have every seen. Malicious attacks on persons and groups of people have become the order of the day, accompanied by a blatant disregard for the truth. We as Americans deserve better than this, and should demand it.
