“How about a DL650A?” Marcus at Suzuki asked me.

I had to think for a minute because manufacturers often use metric codes for their bikes instead of the popular model names.

“Oh, the V-Strom? Sure,” I answered quickly.

The V-Strom – “V” for its V-Twin engine and “Strom,” from German, for “stream” or “current” – crosses all kinds of categories.

You can consider it an entry-level bike, an everyday commuter, a sport enduro tourer, or all of the above.

I wouldn’t hesitate for a second to ride a bike like this.

It is what I consider an “eventual” bike. Meaning that, eventually, some riders might come to their senses and forego the sportbike cramped crouch or the ape-hangered idiocy of overpowered cruisers for a simpler, agreeable and user-friendly motorcycle, offering standard seating accommodation, middleweight maneuverability, good ground clearance, dependable and

economical V-Twin power, some degree of wind and weather protection, a long range fuel supply and a list of available accessories that allows for a blend of broad-based applications and versatility.

And the V-Strom 650A (“A” for ABS), affectionately known as the “Wee-Strom,” is a good example of that kind of common sense practicality, designed as a smaller displacement follow-up to its bigger brother, the V-Strom 1000

(or DL1000).“The V-Strom 650 is one of our most

popular bikes,” Marcus told me. “It’s achieved an almost cult-like following.

No matter what Suzuki event I go to, eventually I find myself surrounded by V-Strom owners, asking questions, talking about their bikes, giving me their opinions and feedback.”

The group is roughly split into two camps. The V-Strom 1000 offers more oomph, a wider range of one-litre, two-up touring power and a sense of well-planted highway stability. The V-Strom 650 is more nimble, slightly lower in the seat and centre of gravity. It offers better fuel economy and will also save you about $2,600 in initial outlay, along with a 16 kg saving in curb weight mass.

last year and a Hayabusa sport monster the year before. The orange paint is vibrant in daylight, shifting to a more subdued

copper tone at dusk, both shades complimentary to a V-Strom sense of style that is either awkwardly ugly, or endearing, depending on who you ask. Or maybe it’s both, come to think of it.

The V-Strom’s enduro DNA shows in the seat position, higher than on cruisers or sportbikes, giving a good vantage point for touring and left turn visibility. It’s tall but no problem for my 36-inch inseam.

The one-piece rider and pillion seat unclips via a keyed lock located at the rear of the bike, just below the built-in back rack. Removing the seat, reveals helmet hooks, a small tool kit and a slightly larger than usual storage spot towards the rear.

The pegs and handlebars are an easy reach, the windshield is adjustable with the turning of a few screws and the bike is comfortable to ride.

I chatted with the owner of a blue V-Strom who was quite pleased with his bike. He had added spill guards to take the worry out of dropping the motorcycle, added large-sized aftermarket luggage cases and solved his carpal tunnel complaints with fatter handgrips. All of them good customizations well worth considering.

The 645 cc V-Twin engine runs quietly, almost unheard at highway speed and the tranny snicks sweetly through six gears. I got the bike

fresh out of the box with barely a dozen klicks on the clock so rating fuel efficiency seems somewhat unfair even though the engine had been bench run by Suzuki before the bike hit

the road. Keeping in mind that it was barely broken in, I rode for 350 km before the gas gauge graph read down to the last bar, filling up at 360 km for a combined fuel economy average of 4.75L/100km.

Based on that personal consumption rate, the 22-litre fuel tank would give me a touring range of well over 450 km.

Although listed as a dual-sport, the V-Strom is intended mainly for the asphalt with mild gravel road ability.

Suzuki Canada will be introducing a new and revised 2012 V-Strom 650A for next season. You can see the bike already on Suzuki Canada’s website and clicking back and forth between the 2011 and 2012 models shows some of the cosmetic changes, mainly around the fuel tank and front end.

More importantly, the 2012 will be taller and narrower, with a higher, more thickly padded seat, a slightly stretched wheelbase, and with a slimmer 20-litre tank and corresponding six kg weight reduction.

The engine has been tweaked for better low-to-mid-range response and improved fuel-efficiency. And a new modernized instrument package bumps up the bike’s sophistication level.

No doubt, there will be V-Strom fans eagerly awaiting next year’s next generation model but the advent of the 2012 version might also be a savings opportunity for those looking for an already willing and able middleweight dual-sport enduro tourer – the 2011 Suzuki V-Strom 650A.

Bentley has announced its pen partner Tibaldi has recently won the Most Exciting Motorsport Pen at Pen World’s 17th annual Readers’ Choice Awards.

The Tibaldi for Bentley Mulsanne pen was chosen by readers because it was inspired by the roaring engines which are associated with the legendary straight and corner at the Le Mans circuit.

The Readers’ Choice awards were presented in New York City and the complete list published in Pen World.

To capture the essence of the Bentley Mulsanne, Tibaldi has

fashioned a series of writing instruments that communicate the feel of the car in a piece of functional, hand-held sculpture.

Fingers holding the Mulsanne will make contact with knurled bands, the surface matched on the pocket clip, echoing the design of Bentley switchgear.

The pen is topped with a Bentley emblem which recalls the vehicle’s starter button. And every pen adheres to Tibaldi’s respect for the Divine Proportion, the ratio between the pen’s cap and the visible portion of the barrel when the pen is closed, equalling the ratio of 1.618.

At the TrackEve of Destruction lights up Western Speedway

Western Speedway’s Eve of Destruction entertained Western Speedway one the season’s largest crowds July 23 when in addition to the regular Demo classes competing – Bombers, Demo Cars, Demo Trucks and Mini Figure 8s – fans enjoyed a boat race and a Limo Car jumping a line of parked cars.

While Heath Cooper recorded a fast time for the Bombers of 19:786, Chris Stone was the night’s big winner, taking first in both the second Heat Race and the 35-lap Main Event, where he was followed across the line by Trophy Dash winner Brandon Steen, Jamie Morgan, Cooper and Mark Lockhart. Teresa Johnson won the first Heat Race, followed by Morgan in second.

Robin Trotter had a winning night with the Demo Cars, starting with a fast time of 20:567, then continuing with a win in the Heat Race and the 12-lap Main Event, where Craig

Holfeld, Jake Matthews, Kenny Baker and Chris Romkey rounded out the top five.

Joe Liberatore won the Trophy Dash, followed by Trotter in second.

Kevin Knight recorded similar success with the Demo Trucks, with a fast time of 20:560, which he took forward to a second-place finish in the Trophy Dash – won by George Haywood – and wins in the Heat Race and 11-lap Main Event, followed by Paul Scotthorne, Haywood, Mark Keeler and Doug Richens.

No. 15 Mike Rutty posted a fast time for the Mini Figure 8s of 12:964, plus a first-place finish in the Trophy Dash, but it was Kail Beck who got the win for the 31-lap Main Event, followed across the line by Dan Baluch, Tim Sutton, Rhett Szevics and Cam Wilkinson. Heat Race wins went to Marie Haywood and Ashton Campbell.
