Thank you for your involvement over the last 2 days with the 3 way conferences. Your participation, along with your child, is an important part of the partnership we endeavor to develop to make sure that your child's learning journey is as enriching as possible. As a staff we put a lot of time into the analysis of every child's achievement data to identify trends and to come up with the teachers next steps for their teaching and learning programmes. We do not want any child to just 'slip through'. We are a school with talented children and supportive families and the sky is the limit!

Moffett Cup preparation is in full swing. Thank you to all the families who have committed to helping out in some way for this big day. The coordination and running of this event is a big deal and it makes a real difference with strong community support.

We have had some requests for information about iPads and possible deals etc. If you are thinking about purchasing an iPad for your family at

some stage we have included in today’s newsletter one example from a local business on what possible purchase or finance deals would look like. Obviously, other businesses around town would offer similar packages and this is no way an endorsement of one particular business.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank some people who have been doing quite a bit of work around our school lately. David White Building has been responsible for the building work in getting the new office and classroom ready for action. David and his team - James and George - have been extremely helpful and obliging with all the little requests that come up in a small 'renovation'. Thank you, David. Olphert Contracting have been responsible for all the painting work that goes with the building changes. Darryl and his team have also been very helpful and easy to work with. Thank you, Darryl. Barry Smith, from our Board of Trustees, has been a significant help in getting the job done. Thank you, Barry.

Our school does not have a permanent paid caretaker. It is the contribution of our community that helps keep our school looking great and functioning efficiently. I would like to acknowledge and thank Jeff Hegan for 'grading' the carpark before the start of term - less potholes is always good! Jeff Blomfield did a great job of tidying up the grounds and garden before the start of term and in clearing out the bike shed - we're trying not to fill it up again, Jeff! Andrew McKee has also been a huge help fixing up the safety matting around our fire exits, fitting new door closers and other odd jobs. Tom Marshall and Dale Hoffman have been a huge help in identifying, sorting and creating a plan of attack in keeping our effluent system functioning efficiently - this is greatly appreciated! Thank you to these 'good guys' and all those other people out there who contribute significantly to the life of our school. The strength of our community is key to a strong community school!

Community:  Southland Junior Netball Academy: is running from Monday 30 July – 24 September in Invercargill. This is a 9 week skill development programme for 8-12 year olds. Bruce C Gull spoke to the Junior School about the environment and how we have an impact on it.

Year 6 Camp - we have made an adjustment to the dates for this year's Year 6 camp. We have managed to secure the new facilities for the dates of 3rd to 6th December (Week 8 of Term 4). We hope that you are able to make some arrangements to join us as parent help this year. Due to unlimited (within reason) accommodation we're inviting all parents to join us this year - even for the final evening bonfire if you can make it.

Also, we are planning a market day to help fundraise for our camp costs, date still to be decided. We will send out more information closer to that date and we're looking forward to the 'finer' weather that the date will offer.

School News:Security: We would like your help when sending money to the office. We ask that all money, no matter what amount, is sent in a labelled envelope or small plastic bank bag, or stapled. When we have a lot of items left at the office they become separated from the note and sometimes we have a battle trying to sort out who has paid for what.

Friends of the School:Facts-a-thon: there are still 68 students who have yet to return their sponsorship card and money. We really dont want to have to phone each student individually to chase them up! Class teachers will be get a list of outstanding students this week so that they can remind them too. Thank you so much for the wonderful response to our request last week for help with Moffatt Cup. We now have lots of baking offers thank you. However we are still looking for more helpers on the day. If you are not donating baking but would be able to donate tea, coffee, sugar, tomato sause or serviettes then please complete the pink form with the donated item stated on it and drop it back to office.You will be able to drop off donated items to school on the afternoon of Thursday 2nd or Friday 3rd morning before 9am. Camp 2012

Week 1 Term 3

MANUKA have shared their initial thinking on what is living and non-living and we have put our ideas on our blog. We have created a 'wonderings wall' with what we hope to discover in this inquiry and have begun finding out about the life processes. Ask your child about Mrs Gren and a story we read to discover the things that mean something is living. Bruce C Gull visited us this week to talk about the environment and how we can make a difference to living things. Many children have a reading goal of 'retell'. It would be great if you could encourage them to do this after they read to you each night. Certificates: Caleb Devery, Peyton Dixon for fantastic holiday diaries.

KOWHAI • We have been learning about Bruce C Gull and painting a picture of him. We wrote a story about him too. Lucy• Bruce C Gull told us about the environment. I leaned that not to put dirty stuff in the pond because it will make the birds sick. Abbey

Mrs Polaschek apologises for being unable to be present for the Tuesday interviews and is looking forward to catching up with most parents and children at the Wednesday interviews. If you were unable to re-book a time for Wednesday, please see me to make another time. Miss van't Wout entered some of our wonderful koru artwork into the Polyfest Art exhibition. Unfortunately due to space they were not able to display all of the entries, but some will be displayed in the Invercargill Public library from Friday 27 July, so be sure to check it out!

RIMU Kia ora from Room Rimu. We are on assembly this week so keep an eye out the for part of the script that your child will read. The scripts are going home on Thursday for the children to practise. As it is Maori language week we have been trying to add more maori into our everyday classroom discussions. This week we are concentrating on the weather.

RATA Last week we began to inquire about what makes a thing living or nonliving. We have some really interesting ideas about this. The children took photos and they are displayed along with their ideas in the classroom. On Monday Bruce C Gull spoke to us about the environment and how we can have an impact on it. He doesn't like it when we pollute the beach because this is his habitat. Here is something to think about...Would you like it if we put rubbish in your habitat?

MIRO • I am enjoying practising Moffet cup and having dad coach our team. Adam• I like doing Moffet cup practise beacuse Mrs Horton has do fun games for practise. Tarrah• I enjoyed writing my retell about A Little Princess. Olivia• I enjoyed writing my speech about favorite animals. Grace • It is good to be able use my ipod touch in class for searching facts for my speech and recording. George• It was fun writing my speech because I enjoy sharing about what I am interested in. TOTARA Spelling testing is continuing so there is no spelling in the homework this week! We are using Mrs Gren to discover the characteristics of what makes a living thing and having fun dancing to the "Evolution of Dance" as part of our Inquiry. Moffett Cup practises are going smoothly with skills and teamwork improving rapidly!
