CD of the Month Contemporary Sainthood – a double feature by Mark Hart Why settle for less? While many claim to follow Christ, far too few commit themselves to what it really takes. In this incredible double feature, Mark Hart illuminates what it means to seek sanctity in the 21st century. In the first presentation, Mark discusses unleashing the power of the Holy Spirit and becoming who we are meant to be: saints. In the second presentation, Mark talks about the dangers of putting human expectations on our supreme God. These two talks will be sure to jump-start your spiritual life and shed some light on what it means to be a contemporary saint.

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

FAMILY CORNER

Another summer has arrived during which I’ll spend time in northern Ontario – a time that includes attempting to overcome my irrational fear of bears in the dark. I’ve seen bears; two summers ago we were bicycling and spotted one sitting just off the trail. My son Tim and I increased our speed considerably – so much so that we missed our turn in the trail and had to backtrack. Healthy fear is good. Irrational fear – the kind where you believe that a bear is hiding behind a tree planning to jump on you as you pass by – is not good. Fear is a characteristic of being human. Sometimes though, we need help to overcome our fears. I found a Catholic priest’s blog containing two pieces of advice:

“Share your fear with a trusted friend. Pray for and develop the virtues of courage and trust. St. Augustine said: ‘Pray as though everything depended on God. Work as though everything depended on you.’ When faced with fear, we should pray for courage, and trust that all things work for the good for those who love the Lord. With that in mind, we will find it easier to plan our next steps.” Not long ago, I watched a woman trying to overcome her fear of deep water by jumping off a dock. I told

Asia her story – about how much courage and trust she possesses. While travelling alone as a pilgrim, she met my son Chris. Even though I hadn’t read the blog mentioned above yet, I told her that, deep down, she knew that she could share her fear with him and could trust him to be right there as she jumped.

What prompted me to tell this story might be a mystery, but, yes, she jumped in the water. I suppose my next step is to follow the proverb in Luke 4:23 – “Doctor, cure yourself!”

Jeremiah

The Formed feature for this month is: Maria Goretti

The story of Saint Maria Goretti is retold in this beautifully made film from Italy. It explains the plight of the poor laborers of the time, struggling to survive in a swampy area with rampant malaria and extreme poverty. Luigi and Assunta Goretti keep their faith despite the hardship, and they in-still in their children a deep love for God. Their daughter Maria is especially devout. But tragedy strikes more than once: sick-ness and death affects the Goretti family, and then their young neighbor Alessandro does the unthinkable. This film, made on location and filled with authentic detail, stars Martina Pinto as Maria, Flavio Insinna (Saint John Bosco) as the brave local Passionist priest, Luisa Ranieri and Massimo Bonetti as her parents, and Claudia Koll as the Countess Mazzoleni.
