Dear Friends:

This month we celebrate the 244th anniversary of the declaration of Independence. The momentous words which sing out to us: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” We now understand the certain irony that is contained in these words as they were written by men who owned slaves and who discounted that women and slaves would benefit equally from these truths. Yet despite these flaws, the vision of human rights that they put before the world two hundred and forty-four years ago, set a lofty goal we are still trying to truly obtain for all people.

As Jews we know what it is to be denied equal rights. Many of us remember the time when clubs, organizations, hospitals and hotels, did not give admission or care to people of the “Hebrew extraction.” We know that we must continually fight for our own rights as well as the rights of others. We know the truth that no one is free until all people are free.

These past few weeks and months we have been reminded again how much work we must do to continue our quest for “tikkun olam”, the repair of the world. We also know that we do this work best when we can share this task with others in community. The work is always easier when it is shared among more people.

I look forward to working with all of you throughout this year to build our congregation, our community and our world to best reflect the world God bequeathed to us.

I am honored to have been given the trust to enter your lives and to share in your joys and sorrows. I am eagerly awaiting sharing Shabbat worship and study with you. I know it will be hard since we need to continue to lead much of our lives through electronic means. But I know that we can still have many opportunities to build a strong, meaningful and hopeful future together.

Rabbi Tarfon teaches us: “We are not required to complete the work, but neither are we free to abstain from it.”

I am pleased to begin the work our ancestors began.

May we grow in wisdom, strength and holiness together.

TOILETRY PROJECT LITTLE THINGS MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE

Shampoos, conditioners, lotions, toothpaste, toothbrushes, dental floss, soaps, razors...small toiletries that you might pick up in hotels when traveling would be so appreciated by those in need. I have been distributing baggies filled with all of the above items to people at the Food Bank, Sojourner House, Homeless Shelters and others in need. I will pick up at the following drop off places: Jewish Community Center, Congregation Rodef Sholom, Temple El Emeth, Ohev Tzedek, Universalist Unitarian Church and Churchill Methodist Church.
