Participating in Alzheimer’s Disease Research StudiesCurrently, nearly 80 percent of Alzheimer’s disease research studies are on hold orstalled because they lack volunteers. Some reasons for this are understandable. Forexample, Alzheimer’s sufferers may find it stressful to participate in such studies orthey may be unable to consent to participate. It can also be risky to take experimentalmedications.
However, there are still some ways for all of us to help. Many studies need healthyvolunteers to take simple online tests. The Alzheimer’s Association endorses manyresearch studies and posts them on their website. They also offer a study match ser-vice. Email alerts will notify you of the studies you might qualify for. Participation isnever required.
Alzheimer’s studies generally fall under four categories:
1. Treatment trials test the effects of a new medication.
2. Prevention trials can test medication as well as supplements, vitamins, diet, exercise, and other lifestyle changes.
3. Diagnostic studies examine better ways to predict the onset of Alzheimer’s.
4. Online studies often require answering simple questionnaires or playingmemory games.
Alzheimer’s Universe is one of the online studies sanctioned by the Alzheimer’s Associ-ation.It seeks healthy volunteers age 18 and older. Participants take courses about Alzheim-er’s prevention, treatment, and diagnosis and do a series of game-like activities. Ac-cording to their site, the purpose of Alzheimer’s Universe is “to educate patients, caregivers, family members, spread awareness about AD diagnosis, treatment, preven-tion, and more.”
I’m in my 40's and don’t have a family history of Alzheimer’s disease. While I lose mycar keys on a daily basis, I don’t have any signs or symptoms of dementia. Even so, Ihave been matched to several studies. One is online and requires taking a few simpleonline tests and answering a questionnaire once a year. Another study is diagnosticand more involved. Once every three years, I meet in person with a researcher whotests my preciosity. Preciosity relates to speech patterns, such as which word is em-phasized in a sentence or whether statements sound like questions.
Study subjects may never know the results of their own tests, but their participationmay offer invaluable insights to inform how scientists diagnose and treat Alzheimer’sdisease in the future.

We lived in an old house that we
had an old used cast iron tub and wasbuilt very cheaply. The outhouse thenbecame a wood shed. Anothermemory was the bare pine floors inthe bedrooms. I got slivers in my feet, unless I wore slippers or shoes. Thehouse had a shallow cellar made withlimestone blocks and had a dirt floor. It was fine for me as a child, but theadults had to duck their heads. Thecellar finally was made deeper and acement floor was put in. I found anarrowhead in the dirt that wasexcavated from the floor. There wasno basement under the dinning roomor the kitchen. The kitchen was
Uncle Henry built a new outhousewhich lasted until a bathroom wasbuilt five years later. The bathroom
added to the original house, lean-to.In the winter, the kitchen faucet couldfreeze, so the water was left on just atrickle. I used to get my baths in thekitchen sink when I was two or three. To get soft water, , rainwater waspumped from the cistern under thefront porch and heated on the stove. The drawback was there was soot inthe water. The Saturday night bathwas more truth than fiction. UncleHenry worked on the railroad. Beforewe had inside plumbing, he would takea bucket of water and a wash pan to hisroom and wash up. rented from the Hilbrich’s. After thewar, we had to buy it, because theywanted to sell it. It wasn’t much, anold farmhouse built before the CivilWar. It was built before electricity. The electrical wiring was added afterthe house was built. A single coldwater faucet was in the kitchen. Therewas no hot water unless it was heatedon the cook stove. There was originallya barn beside the road but it burned.A chicken house, broody coop, an out-house, a garage and a woodshed werethere. When we moved in, the househad an old outhouse in the back with abrick walkway. The outhouse was indanger of falling down.

Tips for Preventing People Living with Dementia from Falling Out of Bed
People who are living with dementia are prone to falling out of bed. In fact, 28% of severe falls in memory carecommunities happen when a resident is rolling out of bed or transferring to or from a bed.
There are a number of factors that contribute to people living with dementia falling out of bed. Those living withcognitiveimpairment may become unaware of their physical limitations. They often will attempt to get out of bed even thoughtheymay lack the ability to walk on their own, leading to a fall or roll out of bed onto the floor.
In addition, incontinence is very common in people living with dementia; however, the instinct to get up and go to thebathroom remains. This very often causes people to try to get up on their own and try to navigate to the restroom in adarkened room while sleepy.
Dementia and Falling Out of Bed: Understanding Why
To help prevent our loved ones living with dementia from falling out of bed, it is important to understand why they arerestless or why they are attempting to get up.
Do they need a different bedtime? Examine the number of hours in bed; you may find residents aregoing to bed too early.
Are their medications being given to them at the appropriate time? Are their continence care needs being met effectively and frequently enough? Is the lighting appropriate for sleep? Is the environment too loud? Consider noise in the hallways, televisions etc. Is their bed comfortable? Examine the mattress, pillows, blankets, etc. Examine the level of engagement throughout the day and monitor for frequent napping or excessive
time in bed during daytime hours.
Dementia and Falling Out of Bed: Prevention Tips
If a resident is falling or rolling out of bed frequently, consider implementing the following measures:
Lowering the bed Adding a fall mat to the floor at the bedside to prevent injury Provide transfer enablers, such as a bed cane, halo or transfer pole can be helpful for residents that
areusually able to self-transfer
Use a pool noodle under the sheet or adding bolsters on the sides of the bed to emphasize the edge

The number one reason personsover the age of 65 experienceinjuries is falling and falls can beespecially disruptive for those wholive alone or in senior communities.
There are many reasons for senior falls. One of biggest reasons is poor balance.Causes of poor balance could be innerear disorders, viral inflammation aroundthe labyrinthine nerve, other nervedisorders, vision problems, diabetes, medications and muscle loss. The lossof muscle mass is also a very commonproblem for older adults. Studies haveshown that older adults who do notexercise, or are very inactive, tend tolose 3 – 5 oz. of muscle mass per year.Regular exercise is one of the mostimportant tools for seniors seeking toavoid injurious falls. Studies have shownthat exercising can increase musclestrength and mass, thus improvingbalance.
The best way for senior communities tohelp their residents prevent falls is tohave a great exercise program. The Live2 B Healthy® program is proven to helpseniors improve both balance and overallstrength. Live 2 B Healthy® Trainers areall Certified Personal Trainers, experienced in working with the seniorcitizens. They are familiar with thespecial challenges that come with age,and they know how to customizespecially-designed exercises to fit thespecific needs of each community andeach resident.
Until in-person Live 2 B Healthy sessionsresume, we are encouraging allresidents to get active in our remotefitness classes through Zoom. See thePersonal Expressions or Programmingteam for details and to get connected.
