PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGEThe season of the rains, July, meant a breath of fresh air and new life for us at StAgnes College when we celebrated VANAMAHOTSVA both on campus, and inthe five villages adopted by St Agnes College by planting hundreds of sapling offruit bearing and shade giving trees.The annual feature of Mother Mary Aloysia Endowment lecture on 2 July broughthome to us a fond remembrance of our Founder and our Foundation Day. The most colorful event of the month was the installation of student cabinet ofUG and PG for 2019-20. Maintaining a perfect balance between academics andco/extra curricular activities the students had their Mid Semester examination. We hope you will enjoy reading this edition and relive your memories of StAgnes.

The Departments of Botany and Economics ofSt Agnes College organised ‘Vanamahotsava– Connecting People and Nature’ on 1st July2019.  The Chief guest, P Shreedhar, RangeForest Officer, Mangaluru division in hisinaugural address gave a call to the studentsto protect forests and spoke on theimportance of caring and saving trees. Sr DrMaria Roopa A.C., Joint Secretary, St AgnesInstitutions, Sr Dr Carmel Rita A.C.,Administrator, St Agnes College, Sr Dr MVenissa A.C., Vice Principal andShubharekha, Dean Administrator of StAgnes College were present. The dignitaries along with studentrepresentatives planted fruit trees and herbalsaplings in the college premises.  St AgnesCollege is all set to celebrate its centenary inthe year 2020. In connection to this event,the organizers distributed 100 saplings to100 students, wishing them all success. Inkeeping with World Environment Day 2019Theme ‘Beat Air Pollution’ is the 160countries all over the world are taking stepsto save the environment and planet.

Venissa A.C. was screened. Afloral tribute to Mother MaryAloysia A.C. was given by all thedignitaries present.  MeenaVaidyanathanthan in her inauguraladdress spoke on “Start Ups,Innovation, Technology – Futureof the Millennials”. In her lecture,she said, “Those who swimagainst the tide are those whocreate a niche for themselves.”“One needs to always follow theirgut as it knows what the headhasn’t figured out yet,” sheadvised.  Distinguished alumnaeRenitia Lobo and Shamitha Rao,the founders of Mother TheresaMemorial School,Shankaranarayana, Kundapurwere awarded for their pathbreaking services in the field ofeducation. Mrs Marina, IQACsecretary welcomed the gatheringand Dr Vidya Saraswathi sharedfew words of gratitude. MrsVinatha compered the programme.The faculty and the students of UGand PG, the alumnae of the collegeand the PTA members werepresent.

The Department of UG Chemistry organised atalk on the topic “Higher studies andemployment opportunities in physical andbiological sciences” by Prof. Ronald Pinto on9th July at 3pm. The programme began with a prayer song leadby Namitha and team of ІІІrd B.Sc. AlishaMenezes of ІІІrd B.Sc introduced and welcomedthe chief guest.  Prof. Ronald Pinto motivatedthe students to pursue higher education, spokeabout its importance and career opportunities inthe field of physical and biological sciences.  Around 150 students attended the programme.Students who secured 85% and above inchemistry during the academic year 2018-19among which 16 students were from I B.Sc (ІІsemester),12 students from II B.Sc (ІV semester)and 7 students from III B.Sc (VІ semester) werefelicitated by Prof. Ronald Pinto. Students of IIIB.Sc Areeba proposed the vote of thanks andMaleeha compered the programme.

The Department of Computer Applications organised a talk onInternational Business on 10 July 2019 for the M.Com andMSc Big Data Analytics students of St Agnes Centre for PostGraduate Studies and Research. The resource person for thesession was Dr Amitabh Anand, SKEMA Business SchoolCote d’Azur, France.Dr Amitabh gave a deep insight on how Business influence anindividual and also every aspect across the globe. He explainedthe importance of International policies. He said the technologyera currently is the Data Era, where everything speaks of onlydata.Dr Amitabh spoke on how students can choose interdisciplinary research topics to gain in-depth knowledge onvarious challenges faced in the International Business withData Analysis. The session started with a silent prayer. DrCathrine, HOD Department of M.Com, florally welcomed theresource person, while Mr Thousif Assistant ProfessorDepartment of M.Com presented a memento as a token ofgratitude.

The ‘World Environment Day’ was celebrated byMangaluru Municipal Corporation, ForestDepartment, Mangalore Smart City Ltd, NationalService Scheme (Mangalore University), BharatScouts and Guides D.K District and Karnataka StatePollution Control Board, Mangaluru on 12th July. The programme began with an awareness rally fromMangala Stadium to T.M.A Pai Convention Centre at9 am. More than 2000 students from variouscolleges across the city, including St Agnes,participated in this programme. The chief guests were Saalumarada Thimmakka,Piyush L Rodrigues, U T Khader and Dr Sudhakar.The guests spoke on the importance of conservingthe environment for a better and healthier future.This was followed by an oath taking ceremony whereparticipants pledged to protect the environment.

National Level workshop onStructural Equation Modeling

The Department of Statistics organised atwo day national level workshop on'Structural Equation Modeling (SEM),' on12 and 13 July. The programme was opento the faculty members, researchscholars and students of variousconstituent colleges of the country. 62delegates representing 32 institutions ofIndia participated in this workshop. Theprogramme began with a prayer and thewelcome address was delivered by MrsShubharekha,the programmecoordinator. DK Zilla Panchayat CEO DrSelvamani R inaugurated theworkshop.  “Even though officialstatistics is considered as one of theyardsticks of development, it need notnecessarily indicate the realdevelopment. Official statistics and the  real statistics differ a lot. We haveplenty of data. But the challenge is toextract knowledge from the collecteddata,” Selvamani said.He focused on the fact that the real timedata plays a significant role in any fieldof social or agricultural sciences. Thechief guest gave a statistical touch to hisexpression and explained the importanceof structural equation modeling. Hestressed on manipulation, duplicationand nonresponse data which may lead toan error. Statistical techniques haveshown tremendous development over theyears, he said. Principal Sr Dr M.

Jeswina A.C. presided over theprogramme. In her address shehighlighted the importance of StructuralEquation Modeling (SEM) and alsomentioned about the upcoming centenaryyear celebrations. This programme wasdesigned to equip the participants withadequate knowledge about the variouscoding forms and data reductiontechniques with structural relationshipbetween the variables. Dr Ismail BProfessor of Statistics, MangaloreUniversity was the chief guest. Theprogramme concluded with the vote ofthanks by Ms. Harshini.

Cabinet Inaugural 2019-20

The inaugural ceremony of the student cabinet for theacademic year 2019-20 took place on Saturday, July 13 atthe St Agnes PU auditorium. Rajni Lobo Patrao, PGDIB analumna of the College was the chief guest. Among thedignitaries present at the ceremony were Sr Dr M JeswinaA.C, Principal, Sr M Carmel Rita AC, Administrator, Sr DrM Venissa AC, Vice Principal, Sr Dr M Vinora A.C, PGCoordinator, Charles Pais, Registrar. IQAC Coordinator,Dean Administration, Deans, the PTA Executive Committeemembers, alumni, faculty, UG and PG students of theCollege were also present.The student cabinet comprises 29 members who are electedby the student body. The PG student president Anna UnaCrasta and UG student president Jerusha Maben took theoath administered by the principal along with eight Vicepresidents and 19 members of the student cabinet.

The theme that the cabinet has adopted for the year 2019-20is, 'Individually we are one drop, and together we are anocean'.Rajni Lobo Patrao in her address inspired and guidedthe new cabinet from her own experience as the privilegedstudent president of St Agnes College in the millennium year

2000-2001 and her working experience inthe corporate world as well as in the creativefield.

AGNESIANS TAKE UPENGLISH CLASSESAS PART OF ATC

The final year students of III BBA visited Dakshina

Kannada Zilla Panchayat Govt Higher Primary

School, Hosabettu, to conduct spoken English

classes to the students studying in I to VII

standard on 13 July. The aim of conducting this

activity was to help students of the government

school improve their English language. The pupils

of the school were divided into different groups

and each group had two students, teaching

them English. The students of St Agnes College

used creative methods to train the young minds.

The primary students were also taught some

action songs in English. All the students of the

school enthusiastically participated and learned

to introduce themselves to the audience in

English. The classes benefited 54 primary school

students.

As part of Agnes Towards Community (ATC), 40

students pursuing graduation in the science

stream checked the quality of water in

Amblamogaru village on July 20.

The students collected water samples from

various water sources and conducted several tests

under the leadership of Ms Smitha and Ms Hezil

from the Department of Chemistry and Mrs

Prajwal Rao, the HOD of the Department of

Microbiology.

The Department of Chemistry conducted water

tests to determine pH, conductance, turbidity and

hardness of water. Meanwhile, the department of

Microbiology performed microbial examination of

water. This involves tests such as - presumptive

coliform test, confirmed coliform test and

completed test.

ADVISES BBA STUDENTSA guest lecture was organisedfor the BBA students on thetopic, ‘Career Building and itsImportance’ on 18 July. DrAmitabh Anand, AssistantProfessor, SKEMA BusinessSchool, France was theResource person. The programme began with aprayer led by Viyona andgroup. Mrs Sabina, HOD ofBBA Department welcomedthe gathering and introducedthe guest.  Dr Amitabh Anandspoke on the importance ofbuilding a career. He spokeabout Sochiro Honda, thefounder of Honda, who nevergave up in spite of facingmany failures. Honda’sperseverance led him toachieve success. Dr Amitabh spoke about hisown life's journey and how hesucceeded in building up acareer for himself. The talkwas inspiring as it includedreal life examples. He alsospoke about the variousopportunities or scope forBBA graduates in India andabroad. Dr Amitabh concludedthe session with a message,follow your dreams, nevergive up and be happy in whatyou do.  Shreya Mallya of IIBBA delivered the vote ofthanks.

DRUGSThe NSS Unit of St AgnesCollege observed WorldAnti-Drug Day byparticipating in theprogramme organised byShri Dharmasthala RuralDevelopment Project, B.CTrust, Mangalore Taluk,Karnataka State AlcoholRestraint Board, Bengaluru,Canara Bank, SyndicateBank, Karnataka Bank andDistrict Legal ServicesAuthority of DakshinaKannada on July 18.The programme began withan anti-drug awarenessrally at 9 am from JyothiCircle to Town Hall. 21 NSSvolunteers from St AgnesCollege participated in thisrally. After the rally, allparticipants assembled inTown Hall to witness theformal programme.Dr M Mohan Alva,Chairman, Alva's EducationFoundation, Prof. PSubramanya Yadapadithaya, Vice-Chancellor,MangaloreUniversity DarshiGangadhar, Senior CivilJudge and Legal ServiceAuthority member andMahabala Chauta were thechief guests. They enlightened theparticipants on the use aswell as the abuse of drugsand the impact of the sameon society.The talk was followed bythe screening of anawareness video on ‘DrugAwareness’ and an oathtaking ceremony whereparticipants vowed to stayaway from drugs.

Serrao cleaned the littered roads of Kanain Hosabettu village on the same day.Along with the clean-up drive, threesaplings were planted. Prathibha Kulai,the area corporator, arranged for the toolsrequired for the drive and a vehicle todispose the collected garbage from thearea. Rotarians Naveen Kumar andRajendra P supported the programme andmotivated the NSS volunteers. The driveended with refreshments provided by thecorporator.  One of the NSS volunteersopined that the day was well spent byrendering social service, motivating andeducating people about a plastic freenation.

The Department of BBA organised a guest talk on the topic ‘The leader in meand the seven habits of a highly successful leader’ on July 23 at 2 pm.

Mrs Aruna Doreen Menezes, Assistant professor, St Aloysius College, Beeri wasthe guest speaker. Elson Dsouza, Assistant professor of BBA department

welcomed the gathering and introduced the guest. Mrs Aruna advised studentson how to think like a leader and become one.  The speaker concentrated onStephen Covey’s 7 habits of a highly successful leader such as Be Proactive,

Dr Vishala spoke on various steps involvedwhile conducting research. She also helped studentsin understanding the complexities of research whichcan be reduced by following proper methods andreferring right articles. She gave students information regarding e-journals such asN-List, J-Gate, Shodhganga etc. which could be easilyaccessed by students. “Prepare, organise, combine andevaluate,” were the four key aspects she explained in hersession. 'EARLIER THE BETTER; LONGERTHE BETTER’, A guest lecture on ‘Mutual FundInvestment for Wealth Creation’ by APrashanth Kumar, AssistantProfessor, SDM College was held forCommerce post graduate students ofSt Agnes College on July 19. Themain focus of the lecture was on howindividual investors can invest andgenerate returns from mutual funds.It included the explanations abouthow mutual fund industry has grownalong the years being one of thesuccessful avenues in investmentsector. The key factor stressed uponby the speaker was ‘earlier the betterand longer the better’, that is, theinvestment can fetch good returns 

only if one can invest in it as early aspossible and keep it invested till alonger period of time.He also spoke about the financialgoals one needs to have and how itcan be matched with investments.Prashanth spoke about the ‘Rulenumber 72’ which is used to calculatethe number of years it takes formoney to double and the various keyinvestment considerations. Thedifferent rates of return for differenttypes of investments were alsotouched upon by the speaker.  Thestudents got to know about thedifferent types of mutual funds basedon various classifications. risk, moderate risk and low riskmutual funds which one needs toconsider while investing.The session was helpful especiallyfor the final year M.Com studentswho will soon start earning and canmake productive utilization of theirincome.The guest lecture facilitatedstudents to gain an insight into howmutual funds work, how one canmake investments in mutual funds,what will be the returns, what kindof mutual funds are best to invest inetc. The two and a half hour sessionhelped students in understandingunknown aspects regarding mutualfunds.

The Department of Psychologyorganised an orientation sessionfor the new set of students ofM.Sc Psychology on July 8.The session began with an icebreaker, where the 47newcomers got an opportunity tointeract with their classmates. Later, faculty members Dr VPremanand, HOD of Psychology,Assistant Professor DeepthiKodoth, Assistant ProfessorDeepa Kotari and AssistantProfessor Anirudh Rameshproposed their ideas about thecourse.They gave an introduction to thesubjects which the first yearswill study in the academicyear.This was followed by asession explaining thefunctioning of the department.The II year students briefed thefreshers on what to expect in theupcoming years and aboutcertain college rules they are tofollow. Post which, II yearstudents introduced themselvesthrough a documentary.

PG Fresher’s Day brings outstrengths and talents ofnewly inducted students

The Fresher’s Day for First year post graduate students was heldon July 20. The programme was themed “Turn your spark into aflame” and the students were motivated to explore theiruniqueness and showcase their strengths and talents to the entirepostgraduate family. The programme commenced at 9:30 am where Arathy Chandhrantook the privilege of welcoming everyone. The I year ClinicalPsychology students gave a good start to the programme with aperformance on the theme ‘Retro’. It was followed by a shortperformance by the I year Big Data Analytics students on thetheme ‘Music Trends’. Next were the students of I M.ScChemistry who gave an amazing performance on the theme ‘FearFight Survival’. In order to cheer up the seated audience, amusical chair game for the Lecturers was conducted. Dr GeethaNazareth from the Department of Chemistry turned out to be thewinner. Next performance was from the PG Department ofEnglish with an exclusive theme of ‘Be Yourself’. The I yearGeneral Psychology students put up a play on the theme‘Halloween’.The final performance was from the students of I M.Com whogave a perfect end for the Fresher’s day performances with theirtheme ‘Kudla Express’.The college cabinet introduced ‘The NewAgnesian  Contest’, to recognise the proactive spirit amongfreshers. PG student president Anna Una Crasta took charge tointroduce the contest and its objectives. Mr Delan Lobo from the UG Department of Commerce and Ms Athena Aranha, UGDepartment of Psychology were the judges.Chris was conferred the ‘New Agnesian’ title. She was crownedby the PG Coordinator Dr Sr Vinora AC. The HODs of variousdepartments awarded a bookmark and pen to their respectivenew Agnesian participants.The contest was hosted by Sharon Vasand Unnimaya Madhu with charm and cheer. Anna proposed thevote of thanks. Dr Sr Vinora AC gave a memento to the judges asa token of gratitude.
