EDITOR’S NOTE
YOGA PRESCRIPTION FOR MONSOON SEASON
RAINS HOLD SOME VALUABLE SPIRITUAL INSIGHTS AND ECHO THE SENTIMENTS THAT LIFE CYCLE OF DEAD AND CONCEPTION CONTINUES. THE RAINS BRING WITH THEM THE LIFE
LESSONS OF BEING FLEXIBLE AND ADAPTING TO CHANGES IN LIFE WITH RESILIENCE.
PEARLS OF WISDOM
YOGASATTVA 04
Vedas mention rains. Parjanya (Sanskrit: parjánya) according to the Vedas is the deity of rains. The Atharvedas claims Parjanya and Prithvi to be father and mother of all beings. In Rigveda, Indra the leader of Devtas who resides in Swarga (Heaven) is the God of thunder, lightning, rains and storms. Indra is the most discussed rain deity in Rigveda.
Rains hold some valuable spiritual insights and echo the sentiments that life cycle of dead and conception continues. The rains bring with them the life lessons of being flexible and adapting to changes in life with resilience.
Nature is the inspiration behind all Yoga lessons. Let us talk about the monsoon Do’s and Don’ts as per Ayurveda and AVAV, the four pillars of Yoga - Ahara, Vihara Achara and Vichara.
During rainy season, common problems seen are due to Pitta, Vatta and Kapha imbalances. Conditions such as dysentery, common cold and cough, asthma, arthritis, nasal infections, digestion problems and skin allergies begin to surface.
Ahara/Diet tips for monsoonSattvic diet is the set norm, but things to include in your balanced diet —
Do’s-
• Eat more of whole grains, barley, pulses soups, curd, buttermilk, citrus fruits, honey etc.
• Ginger and black pepper intakes improve digestion.
• Green leafy vegetables to avoid or clean them properly before use because they tend to contain more muck, dirt and soil than usual. Boil or steam the green leafy vegetables before consumption.
Don’ts-
• Don’t consume frozen foods, ice-creams, fast foods, refined, roadside pakodas and processed foods.
Vihara/ Recreation for monsoonDo’s-
• Indoor recreation or activities are encouraged for children. Board games, Yoga asanas, card games, tell jokes to family members and share a light moment etc.
• Asanas such as Yastikasana, Parvatasana, Bhujangasana. Pranayamas like Yogendra Pranayama IV, Ujjayi and Anuloma Viloma.
• Relaxation techniques like Nisphandabhava, Anitya Bhavana etc.
• Meditation and Bhramari are recommended.
Don'ts-
• Don’t get lazy because you cannot go outdoors and exercise.
• Don’t worry about falling sick.
Achara/ Routines to follow during monsoonDo’s-
• Use hot water during bathing and washing your hair. If your head is wet immediately dry it.
• If you have to travel for the job keep an extra set of dry clothes in your office or lockers provided.
• Avoid skin infections – A quick home tip is to add 1 or 2 spoons of neem oil to half a cup of warm sesame oil and use it for the massage
before hot water bath.
• People with arthritis and joint pains should avoid sitting on cold floors since it will increase Vatta dosha and aggravate the pain.
• Foot care is very essential for people with diabetes. During rains, the feet tend to get wet often hence care needs to be taken to dry them properly.
• Keep body warm wear with adequate clothing and cover head when required or travelling. Invest in comfortable footwear with proper grip to avoid falling or slipping on wet surfaces.
• Cut your nails as moisture between them will increase the chance of infection.
Don’ts-
• Avoid sleeping during afternoons to avoid lethargy (do conscious relaxation in Shavasana).
• Don’t wash your hair in cold water. Cold showers are a big no-no. Scanty clothing should be avoided during rains.
Vichara/ ThoughtsDo’s-
• Dose of rainbow coloured optimism is advocated. Every dark cloud has a silver lining, so focus on that lining. Positivity is the key for all seasons.
• Yoga is a way of living. Aim to be healthy in mind and body. Our reality or present state is due to thinking. Think it and chances are you will achieve it. We all are physical, mental and spiritual beings & Yoga encourages a balanced development of all the three.
• Pranayamas help since thought and mind have a close connection. Yogendra Laya is the best way to beat the mind chatter and harbour
positive frame of mind.
Don’ts-
• Some people experience depression during rains. Negative thinking worsens the symptoms. Stop over thinking (do pranayamas).
• Don’t indulge in gossip that will tend to multiply negative thoughts. Don’t hold on to negative thoughts and comments (learn to let go).
The rains nurtures the grass, trees and flowers, and it replenishes the rivers and lakes. Rain is nurturing our planet and the creatures that inhabit it. The next time it rains, take a Yogic break and nurture yourself. Recharge your mind, body and spirit this rainy season with Yoga wisdom. Aim for holistic health.
Stay healthy and happy. This rainy season enjoy all the rainbow colours “VIBGYOR” of life and celebrate Yoga way of living.

YOGASATTVA 05
oga is an ancient science of healthy living which can also lead you Yto higher life if one wishes to follow. All said and done this century old science has changed its hands from teacher to teacher
and student to student. Obviously it goes without saying that it has changed its forms and appearance but one thing for sure what never changed is its esoteric essence, meaning Yoga can never be known through books as it lived in your experience, which a Guru transpires in a shishya. You may practice whatever form of Yoga with right attitude it is bound to bring change in your person.
My Guru Dr. Jayadeva once said that, “Apparently we can’t see how asana help us achieve this. Mostly we take to asana when we have some physical problems like aches and pains or certain disease conditions. And our attention is towards resolving the problems. And once problems are resolved we stop performing asana. We are not interested in experiencing the intrinsic values which also includes preventive and therapeutic value of asana.”
When asanas are done in conformity of the definition STHIRA SUKHAM ASANAM sincerely in non violent way with quiet and relaxed mind it is capable of developing attitude of peace, stability, relaxation and self reliance as they also work on nervous system along with muscular system. Asanas work on subtler areas of body and mind like; circulation, nerve impulses, etc. When the nervous system is in correct and healthy condition then lot of good occurs and problems are resolved. Same goes
with Kriya, Pranayamas, Bandhas and Mudras, though in overall perspective techniques are just 1% part of Yoga, rest is just common sense.
In the scheme of Ashtanga Yoga when it is said Yama has to be practiced, it doesn’t mean we have to follow an ethical code, instead the suggestion is to restrain those tendencies which are self destructive and consumes our 99% energy. And this is where its preventive mode begins. Further when we go a layer below this, prevention does not mean suppression, it means sublimation. Negative or positive tendencies are inherent within us; we just choose positive over negative and allow the negative to fritter away to be weakened without causing any harm.
If we want to pinpoint on central theme in the entire system of Yoga, it is our focus point, what is the object of our focus. If it is destructive, we destroy our life and if its constructive we build our life. Yoga just facilitates us through its techniques in achieving this discrimination.

Asthma is a condition characterised by recurrent attacks of
w ide-spread revers ib le narrowing of the airways to the lungs. The wind-pipe (trachea) and its tree like branches (bronchial tree) becomehypersensitive and irritable in asthamatics and react to variety of physical, chemical, psychological and immunological (allergens) stimuli and become narrow.
The narrowing results from
1. Broncho-constriction resulting from contraction of circular strip of bronchial muscles in the walls of bronchii and respiratory bronchioles.
2. Swelling of the inner musical lining.
3. Increased secretion of mucus by swollen linings.
As the airways become narrow, it becomes difficult for air to move in and out. This results in feeling of tightness in chest, shortness of breath, wheezing {whistling noise} and coughing.
These episodes can be seasonal, irregular or perennial. A more severe form is status asthmaticus, an intractable episode where no relief is experience despite repeated oral and injectatble medicines.
Despite modern medical advancement, most asthmatics suffer due to poor awareness of disease, its monitoring and management. PEFR meter is a device which helps to diagnose narrowing at earliest which when attended prevents severe attacks. There are two types of medicines used to treat asthma. Relievers use medicines to treat an acute attack and preventers use them to control the immunological sensitivity and inflammation. The treatment is such that by using preventors appropriately the need for relievers and hence the acute attacks are minimized or abolished.
While modern medicine focuses on purely physical aspect of the disease; Yoga techniques acts at innermost level of our existence (panch-koshas). The nervous system in asthmatics is irritable and hyperexcitable resulting into imbalance between the parasympathetic and sympathetic limbs of autonomic nervous systems. Yoga practices reduce this autonomic nervous system excitability and restores balance of the system. No wonder many asthmatics get better when they learn Yoga. Yoga also
corrects disturbances at emotional, psychological and energy levels and should. Yoga creates deeper level of a w a r e n e s s s o l v i n g psychological and emotional confus ion tha t t r i g g er a s t h m a a t t a c k s . T h e awareness may also help ident i fy ing the t r ig ger
factors. A sattavic balanced diet will take care of most food allergies. Asthmatic should not overeat or lie down for 2-3 hours after meal for this reduces the diaphragmatic excursions and hence the lung capacity temporarily. They should have a daily routine of walking and laghu-vyayama for this builds the stamina to fight disease better. Starting a new active creative hobby, practices of anitya and pratipaksha bhavana helps to take away focus from constant worrying over disease. Relaxation and recreation are vital to remove the stress which triggers asthma attacks.
Daily Jalneti, Kapalabhati and Kapal-karna randhra dhauti helps in removing the allergens and germs from nasal passage which otherwise triggers asthma attacks. Upward and backward bending asanas help to expand chest cavity. Forward bending and inversion asanas help to drain the excessive mucus. The lateral bends and twisting asanas serve both above purposes. Pranayamas 1 to 4 help build up respiratory muscles. Rechak pranayama and breathing out against pursed lips help building expiratory muscles. Meditation calms the mind and gives mental clarity which both help to alleviate disease. Positive thinking, reading good scriptures, identifying self from non self, temporary from impermanent gives asthmatic a new leash of life. Yoga thus should be adopted as a complementary measure in all asthmatics.

This practice activates the digestive fire.

YOGA TO BOOST MENTAL HEALTH
YOGASATTVA 26
YOGICINSIGHT
Q : Why has mental health been chosen as the theme for Cyclopaedia III?
Dr.J: Nowadays, there is an increase in stress conditions and tensions. Generally the ordinary individual’s thinking is confused. There is a lot of uncertainty as far as the meaning and purpose of life is concerned. That is why the theme has been selected.
Q. : The second volume of the Cyclopaedia has been Education. Is there a link between Education and Mental Health?
Dr. J : Education is more for the student who are very impressionable. They come consciously with the intention to learn. They come willingly to learn. Whereas, there are persons who are suffering from mental illnesses and are not aware of it. Sometimes they are required to seek psychiatric help as good mental health remain hidden in sane education.
Q. : Who is a mentally healthy person according to Yoga?
Dr.J : The traditional ideas are there. When a person reaches a Sattvika state, he is mentally healthy with greater balanced state of mind, greater clarity and understanding. When the four Bhavas which are spoken of in Samkhya (Dharma, Jnana, Vairagya and Aishvarya) are in their full strength, that is health.
Q. : What is the Yogic viewpoint on mental ill health and what are its causes?
Dr.J : Mental ill health is also considered in the Yoga sutras. There are various obstacles in the study of Yoga. There are also certain
conditions that are psychosomatic in nature. The way in which
Yoga thinks of handling these things is creating greater steadiness, balance – Ekta Tattva Abhyasa that is understood. Here of course, all the earlier techniques are necessary to see that steadiness is created. Steadiness should be the answer, otherwise it is Prajna Aparadha.
Q.: What things would you say are most helpful in maintaining mental poise amidst intense work activity?
Dr. J : Yoga proceeds in a very systematic and practical way. There are various schemes like the Eight-fold path, Kriya Yoga and even various techniques of Hatha Yoga. Yoga has procedures for re-establishing mental health.
Q. : Cultivation of which attitude would prove most helpful in adversity?
Dr.J : Naturally, faith is an important ingredient. The individual that does not have faith is like a lost person.
Q.: How does one generate faith?
Dr.J : Faith is considered as an Upaya. It is said that when an individual enjoys quietude, quietude itself helps in creating a certain conviction. That would be one way; the other suggestion
is that the positive states of the mind can generate faith. The four Bhavas, when they are available in full strength, positive conditions, faith can come.
Q. : Can one bring about change in one’s basic personality by cultivating these attitudes?
Dr.J : That is the contention. The contention of Vijnana Bhiksu is that even in this very life, one can reach the highest. We reap the desired results with a certain persistence, with certain obstinacy of one attempt, in this very life.
Q. : Doctor, you have mentioned reaching the highest. What is this highest state?
Dr.J : Traditionally, the concept is that when the impurities are removed, when the kleshas are removed the Sattvic state is created. The Ekagra Chitta state, the Niruddha Citta state is created. These are the traditional ideas.
Q. : What would you have to say about ‘All matter is for the service of the spirit’?
Dr.J : Things are happening in our life in such a way that they assist us in our own growth. In various ways, nature is helping us. If you
can generate this faith in nature, taking assistance from events that have occurred, learning out of events, changing one’s life, it will give us important guidance.
Q. : How do we translate into practice the Chitta Vritti Nirodha
idea at The Yoga Institute?
Dr.J : At the preliminary stages, one can regulate the Achara, Vichara, Ahara and Vihara concepts. As a result the mind is steadier and one-pointed. The mind creates a certain clarity about goals
Nihreyasasya Hetu as it is said and when these condition occur, the individual has strong motivations and strong urge. Once one sees this, one’s thinking is reduced and one enjoys steadiness. When these is unsteadiness, the mind is very active and runs here and there. Where the goals are set and the focusing occurs, there is considerable reduction that take place as far as the mental life is concerned. Once the individual works on the techniques that are suggested in Yoga, like disinterestedness, concentration, etc.,as far as the very highest is concerned, it
would of course be a matter of the individual’s own effort. We can lead the individual upto a certain point only.

“Start Living Yoga”- A very apt theme to celebrate the 4th International
Day of Yoga 2018. This is the need of the hour. Living Yoga and not just
doing asanas, as Yoga is more than just asanas. It is my good fortune to
celebrate this day with The Yoga Institute Director, Dr.Hansaji and her
team.
The Yoga Institute, founded in 1918 by Shri Yogendraji, is in its 100th
year, serving the society and touching the lives millions during its journey.
The Institute has produced more than thousands of Yoga teachers, teaching all over the world. The Yoga Institute has been contributing to the promotion and development of holistic Yoga for over ten decades, and served every section of the society both, locally and globally. I applaud the excellent work done by the institute and the indefatigable efforts of Dr. Hansaji. She is well-known for her oratory skills and is quite popular amongst the national and international Yoga fraternity. While many identify with her as the celebrated presenter of the popular television series, she is also known as the ‘First Lady of Yoga’. She made the nation proud by being the only lady Yoga Guru to share the stage alongside-Honourable Prime Minister of India-Shri Narendra Modiji at the ‘First International Yoga Day’ (21June 2015-New Delhi).
Madhya Pradesh soil and its people are honoured for the wonderful
opportunity of launching the YOGA FOR ALL, a new book on Yoga that
integrates the values of The Yoga Institute. Within the pages of this book,
Dr. Hansaji J. Yogendra has bought forth her immense experience over decades of practice and teaching Yoga into a concise and systematic format, integrating ancient wisdom into the traditional practices.
It is also a matter of great pride that we have the recipient of prestigious
Prime Minister Award winner amongst us.
I am in debt to the Institute and Dr. Hansaji for her invaluable yogic
insights and for sharing the gift of Yoga with the world.

One of the most beautiful and fragrant trees of The Yoga Institute is named `Kailashpati’ as the petals resemble the hood of a Naga protecting a Shivalingam (stigma). It is also known as Cannonball, as the fruit it bears resembles a cannonball. Mythological significance: The flowers are used for worshiping Lord Shiva, and are found in temples in India and Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka and Thailand. The tree also commemorates the Jewish New Year for Trees, and the Shamans of Amazon believe it provides protection against evil spirits.
TESTIMONIALS
When we think Yoga, we have a certain image in our mind of someone performing a posture. But we often don’t think of meditation, scriptural study, breathing practice, food preparation. While I’ve been around Yoga in the West for over 10 years, The Yoga Institute opened my eyes to the complete understanding that Yoga is not just a physical science, it’s an ancient holistic lifestyle. In my nearly 4 months here, I have changed dramatically in my awareness of life’s teachings. And I know those changes will continue to take effect long after I begin my journey as a teacher. Change is inevitable in our lives and TYI has taught me not only to accept changes but ascend with them.
The saying that, if you really desire something from the depth of your heart, then the entire universe will work towards achieving what you aspire. This is exactly what Yoga and The Yoga Institute is for me. Yoga has helped me evolve from being an impatient and anxious person to having a composed personality. I always had a feeling that every person I have closely associated at this esteemed Institute, be it my Gurus, the teachers, the staff at the institute or my friends, everyone were only helping me grow as a positive person. I feel blessed to have been trained and guided under Guru Late Dr. Jayadeva and Guru Smt Hansaji. Each and every day was a growth from the beginning when I joined the 7 day camp to being the coordinator of 3 month TTC. I take this opportunity to congratulate The Yoga Institute for completing 100 years and spread the goodness for many more years into the heart of every human.

My experience with The Yoga Institute and their instructors was fantastic. We always think about how to stay fit, which exercises to do etc. But when I sat down with Neelamji and Amitji, and while they were demonstrating I thought we can always spare those 10 minutes in which our entire body is toned and revamped. I was really happy with the easy and doable Yoga stretches and asanas they showed. I extend my thanks to The Yoga Institute for conducting an informative session.

But soon after I realised the immense health benefits that I got after joining Yoga classes.I had put on weight as I didn't have much opportunity to do any physical activity or pursue sports activity as I was in 12th standard. Not only did I lose weight but I also got a toned and flexible body. The teachers are extremely helpful and patient with us. They guide us to do d i f ferent postures in a ver y simplified manner. I have been associated with The Yoga Institute for the past ten years. I use to come for the regular morning classes but would divide my time between Asanas and Parisamvad as I use to feel delighted going to work pondering on Hansanji & Dr. Saab’s words of wisdom.
As soon as I retired, I joined the 7 months Teachers training course. I thoroughly enjoyed the course as it gave me a chance to find myself. On its completion, I took up a job at the Institute. If I have any health problem I go back to my practices of asanas and pranayam and rarely take any medication.I have great faith in Yoga so when my friends ask me the secret of my enthusiasm and good health I tell them its Yoga.
LEYLA CZAKON, STUDENT FROM CANADA
I’ve spent the last 4 months in The Yoga Institute. First, I completed the 1 month TTC, during which I felt I wanted to go deeper and learn more in this school. I’ve interacted with so many inspirational people, both students and teachers. This isn’t just a school, it’s a home, a community and a family. The campus is like an oasis of peace, clarity and love in the middle of the chaotic jungle, Mumbai. It may be a teacher training course but I personally feel it’s more of a journey of self study, self understanding & growth. I look forward to come to The Yoga Institute. I’m very grateful to have found this haven.

Shri Yogendraji - Father ofModern Yoga Renaissance
In contrast with the orthodox concept, were Yoga to focus its
attention from the individual to the society and thus socialize its
technology, it shall be possible only when its teachings and
technique are reorientated as a system of education to suit modern
needs. In such a transformation, it need not lose its identity. On the
contrary, it should gain more scientific and rational strength to
establish itself as something unique, in the modern educational
curriculum and which is so lacking in the present system of
education.
In fact, Yoga is not intended to replace university education but it
certainly can supplement and sublimate that education at the school,
college and university levels for expansive and exact knowledge.
What is certain is that India has by accident for the present broken
her spiritual backbone in the mad rush for materials progress under
competitive incentive for survival and supremacy. In this context,
the role of Yoga is to supply the essential experience of the spiritual
values in one’s relation to oneself and others through the technique
of shifting the self from the non-self and making discrimination
possible not in personal interest but in the interest of all.
