Health Care Campaign Update – Senate Bill Introduced
Senate Republicans finally made public their version of the American Health Care Act (AHCA), which repeals
the Affordable Care Act or Obamacare. You can find the full text of the Senate bill here. Our Government
Affairs team will continue to provide analysis of the bill, but here is what we know now:
Millions of Americans will lose their health insurance coverage over the next decade. This loss of coverage for millions of Americans will be done in order to pay for massive tax cuts for the
wealthiest Americans. The bill maintains the so-called Cadillac tax, punishing union members who have quality, affordable employer-
based health insurance plans. The bill includes an age tax, allowing insurers to charge older Americans as much as five times what they charge
younger Americans. The Affordable Care Act's Medicaid expansion will be phased out from 2020 to 2024. Cuts to Medicaid are
designed to grow larger every year. In the second decade – beyond what the CBO will score – this bill will gut Medicaid as we know it.
There is still a great deal of uncertainty about the process through the next week. However, our best estimate
is that the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) score will be released next Monday, June 26. Senate rules
require 20 hours of debate, which will likely occur on Tuesday and Wednesday. This will be followed by a
rapid-fire “vote-a-rama” session on amendments to the bill. While Democrats can introduce an unlimited
number of amendments to the bill, Republican leadership is able to cut off debate at any time and proceed to a
final vote, likely on Thursday, June 29.
The next week is our best chance to stop this horrible legislation from becoming law. Please engage now to
put pressure on Republican senators in your states. Here’s what you can do:
Drive calls to Senate offices utilizing our toll-free hotline: 888-865-8089. An updated flier with this hotline is attached to this email and is also available on the Working Families Toolkit.
Direct people to our landing page that includes facts about the AHCA and ways to take action: https://aflcio.org/ahca.
Mobilize working people online with health care graphics and videos from our digital toolkit. Watch for town halls and public appearances for opportunities to put pressure on senators:

Milly Krause – SBDWC Legislative Liaison & DWCF Legislative
Chair July 2017 News Article
Florida’s 2017 Legislative Session is over for now unless another
surprise Special Session is called.
After weeks of urging Governor Scott to Veto the Dangerous
Education Conforming Budget Bill, HB 7069, he signed the bill into
law on Thursday, June 15th. Watch for lawsuits. While many
support a 20 minute recess daily for students, the fact that millions
are being used to support unproven charter schools, rather than give
money to help schools in need, strongly indicates that too many in
the legislator are working to destroy public schools in support of
private enterprise. For the sake of our DEMOCRACY, we must
continue to fight, fight, fight, and educate those who don’t believe
that this is what’s happening.
Also, keep your eyes out for email Action Alerts on Trumpcare. We
need to stop this legislation. Your calls will be needed.
Even though I’ve already shared a summary of the 2017 Legislative Bills, the following is helpful and easy to
read.

Our club picked Healthcare as our main issue to focus on, please work to focus on your own issues as well. For
those who are weary of the Legislative Process in Florida and Nationally, don’t give up. We must keep the
pressure on. If we don’t say anything, then we give those we oppose, a license to do as they please. When you
make calls, these calls are logged. It takes, time, energy and persistence to make platform changes. So, give
yourself a break and then, get started again. Over the summer, contact your local legislators and work to
influence the creation of productive legislation.
Here’s the link to the Florida House and Senate. Take many virtual tours of these sites and visit your local
legislators to discuss issues and future legislation. Ask about doing this at our next meeting. CLICK THE

We have Ray Romano on the show tonight. He stars in the new movie “The Big Sick,” which is also the name
of the Republican healthcare bill. Jimmy Fallon
The Senate healthcare bill came out today, and it would cut a tax on indoor tanning. Which is the biggest proof
so far that Trump was actually working on the bill. Jimmy Fallon
Yesterday, White House officials said Russia targeted election systems in 21 states last year. Trump was
furious. He said, “I paid for all 50.” Jimmy Fallon
Today, Trump tweeted that he doesn’t have recordings of his conversations with former FBI Director James
Comey. He doesn’t have them. Then one guy said [Russian accent], “Don’t worry, you can borrow ours.”
Jimmy Fallon
NASA reports that it had a record 18,000 applicants to be astronauts. And apparently 1,000 more apply every
time President Trump tweets.—Conan O”Brien
You remember a month ago Donald Trump tweeted: “James Comey better hope there are no ‘tapes’ of our
conversations before he starts leaking to the press.” Well, guess what, today Trump tweeted, “I have no idea
whether there are ‘tapes’ or recordings of my conversations with James Comey. But I did not make and do not
have any such recordings.” He’s now fact-checking himself! James Corden
Of course Trump doesn’t have a tape. Secretly taping someone would require thinking ahead — and show me
one time that this president has done that. James Corden
But yeah, it turns out Trump didn’t record Comey, there are no tapes. The main reason for this is that people
haven’t used tapes since 1992. James Corden
At a rally in Iowa last night, Trump unveiled a new plan for his long-proposed border wall [clip of Trump]:
“We're thinking about building the wall as a solar wall so it creates energy and pays for itself.” A solar wall.
Now he’s literally blowing sunshine up our [butts]. James Corden
This morning Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell showed us a draft of his top-secret new healthcare
legislation. They opened the vault, they laid the bill out on a table, rubbed lemon juice all over it, and the text
magically appeared for all to see. And wouldn’t you know it, the bill includes a big tax cut for rich people. So
unless you just got drafted by an NBA team, it’s not great news. They’re calling the plan “Bettercare,” as in:
Just imagine how much better this plan would be if the people who wrote it cared. It slashes Medicaid, which
could negatively affect millions of poor and elderly people. But here’s the thing, it won’t happen until 2024. It’s
gradual. Which makes you wonder: Why 2024? What is the significance of that? Will we all be in those pods
from “The Matrix” by then, we won’t need healthcare? ……Jimmy Kimmel
Senate Republicans today released a draft of their bill to repeal and replace Obamacare, which would cut taxes
for richer Americans and insurance companies, and defund Planned Parenthood for one year. The bill is so bad,
President Trump said, “Does anyone have any questions for me about Russia? ..Seth Meyers
Alternatively, I could show you my tax returns. Do you guys want to see that?” …Seth Meyers
