Letter from the Executive Director

Dear McKee Garden Member:

A Year of Firsts - I’m proud to report that McKee continues to thrive and grow. 17 years after opening, we are still experiencing many firsts in the Garden.

In November, we put the FIRST spade in the ground to kick off construction of the new Children’s Garden at McKee, funded by our FIRST capital campaign since the original acquisition and restoration campaign launched over 20 years ago. Construction is well underway and the team is hard at work to open the Children’s Garden in Summer 2019. If you have any interest in visiting to see the progress, please let us know!

With everyone’s support, we are confident that we can complete the Campaign for the Children’s Garden at McKee by June 30, 2019. As of the end of this fiscal year, our generous community of supporters had contributed over $5.5 million towards our $7.5 million goal (including the Garden’s FIRST million dollar gift!) Be on the lookout for the opportunity to help fund the landscaping of the Children’s Garden by becoming a “Cultivator of Creativity.” Even the kids are getting into the fundraising effort. They raised $256 over three hours during the Waterlily Celebration with their own Lemonade Stand (and even came up with a delivery system to visitors throughout the Garden.) Be on the lookout for them again in the months ahead.

For the FIRST time, our Garden Café – operated by Sealantro – extended its hours into the summer. Their following is expanding and their food is delicious, so please stop by. Also this summer, our annual exhibit It’s A Jungle Out There! became the FIRST exhibit ever held over through the summer, thanks to the resounding enthusiasm for the collection. This is the FIRST exhibit we have purchased rather than rented, so keep your eyes peeled for some of the sculptures lurking in the Garden even after the exhibit closes in September.

On the event front, we hosted our FIRST Garden & Antique Show in March. It was so well-received that we will be holding it again in 2019. Of course, our many annual signature and community appreciation events met with resounding success. For the FIRST time at the Holidays at McKee and Nights of Lights, we welcomed professional lighting designer, East Coast Encore Lighting, to enhance the experience and the result was spectacular. Be sure to come over the holiday season this year to see what he has in store! All of these events helped us exceed last year’s annual attendance by over 1,500 visitors, making 2017-2018 our second largest year yet with 58,767 visitors to the Garden.

Yet another FIRST! Our Seed to Sea Secret Supper was held at Citrus Grillhouse in partnership with esteemed chef, Scott Varricchio. The sold-out event supported the Children’s Garden at McKee and will be held again this season on Sunday, January 13, 2019 in another “secret location.” Certain to be another sell-out, you will want to make reservations early! More information will be arriving on your doorstep in October.

And last but not least, McKee was named as one of the Top Ten Most Romantic Places in Florida for the FIRST time by Coastal Living magazine. Thanks to our outstanding horticulture team, the Garden continues to provide peace, serenity, inspiration and fascination with its many plants and floral beauties hidden within our 18 acres of lush Florida jungle. Transforming with new botanical surprises every day, each visit to McKee is its own FIRST. We look forward to seeing you here in the months and years ahead! Thank you all for your support.
