Where to Watch NET’s Three Channels NET offers three separate television channels for you to watch, but finding them in the increasingly complicated media market can be a challenge. We want to be sure that you have access to the public television programs you support, appreciate and enjoy on NET, NET World and NET Create. Several of the state’s cable and satellite providers offer the NET and NET World channels as part of their services. If not, they are available to most Nebraska homes free over-the-air with an antenna. In fact, many Nebraskans have been watching our first public broadcasting service (NET) that way for more than 60 years. NET Create is also available free over-the-air with an antenna. If you are having trouble receiving any one of our channels, visit netNebraska.org/tvchannels for localized channel information and guidance on home antennas. The site includes additional online links that may be helpful.

Wow! “Windshield time” goes by quickly in Nebraska. We logged more than 1,100 miles during our “On the Road with NET” trip. Our team visited six towns in seven days – with 17 events that included two Friday LIVE radio

programs, another radio show called NET's Panhandle Showcase and a Backyard Farmer television show in Gering on a hot (103 degrees) summer day. The audience and crew got a little dusty, but the questions were great and the backdrop of the bluffs was incredible. It was a packed week, but by far, one of my favorite NET experiences. (Pictures and story on pages 18-19.) We also celebrated the restoration of NET’s over-the-air television signal with the new KTNE antenna and met hundreds of loyal NET fans – each with a story to tell about the part of Nebraska they call home. There were two teams out collecting video that you’ll see in new Nebraska Stories episodes (Season 8 starts in January), as well as other snippets you’ll see when we celebrate the state’s Sesquicentennial. Along with a sunburn, I have a new appreciation for the unique beauty of Western Nebraska! While we were out enjoying our summer adventure, staff from PBS NewsHour and NPR have been preparing for coverage of the upcoming Republican (July 18-21) and Democratic (July 25-28) National Conventions. You (the American public) consistently rate PBS as the most trustworthy

among nationally-known organizations, so you can be confident that you’ll see expert, intelligent analysis. If you’re a Downton Abbey fan searching for another series to capture your attention, then you won’t want to miss A Place to Call Home, beginning this month. Set against the social change of the 1950s, this drama centers on a mysterious nurse who discovers a potentially scandalous family secret.

As we sent this issue of INSIDE NET to print, there were just a few days left in our “Close the Gap” fundraising campaign. Thank you for being a member! If you’d like to make an additional gift – there’s still time. (Visit netNebraska.org/donate to see how close we are to reaching our goal.)

As always, we can’t thank you enough for your continued support. Your gifts make it possible for NET to create and broadcast high-quality programs. They also fund community engagement and education efforts such as NET’s Virtual Learning Library, a free online tool for educators, students and parents.

We’ll continue the work of connecting Nebraskans to each other and the world. In the meantime, please drop me a line. I’d love to hear from you!

Listeners of On Being say the radio show prepares them to relate to people in fresh, new ways, and emboldens them to engage in new kinds of service. It seems like just the sort of results Peabody Award-winning host Krista Tippett would want from a show that explores the mysteries of human existence and questions at the center of life.

What does it mean to be human, and how do we want to live? Every Sunday morning at 7 a.m. CT on NET Radio, Tippett examines these complex questions as they relate to our 21st-century lives and endeavors. On Being is a social enterprise with a radio show at its heart.

It is also the home of the Civil Conversations Project (civilconversationsproject.org), another approach that creates dialogue about today’s relationships. On Being’s listeners, readers, and online communities cross boundaries that separate them in the culture at large: generational, socioeconomic, political and religious.

Tippett was raised in Oklahoma and studied history at Brown University. She first created the show – originally called Speaking of Faith – at Minnesota Public Radio/American Public Media. It launched on public radio stations across the U.S. in 2003.

A Place to Call Home is like a cross between Dynasty

and Downton Abbey with a twist

of Mad Men.

Dr. Nancy Beck, PARADE

A Place to Call Home is a 13-part sweeping romantic drama that centers on the mysterious nurse Sarah Adams as she returns to her native Australia after two decades in Europe. While working for her passage home, Sarah quickly connects with charming and wealthy widower George Bligh, the son of a patient. When she unwittingly discovers a potentially scandalous Bligh family secret, her future becomes forever linked with theirs.

Estranged from her mother and carrying the secrets of her wartime experiences, Sarah accepts George’s offer to come and work in Inverness, the picturesque country town near his family estate. Fearful of what Sarah knows about the family, Bligh matriarch Elizabeth resolves to sabotage her employment prospects at the local hospital. Though Sarah manages to secure a job at the local hospital over Elizabeth’s objections, the feeling of being set-against is an unwanted echo of her dark past.

Full of intrigue, romance and drama, A Place to Call Home has been described as a “compelling melodrama about love and loss set against the social change of the 1950s.”

It was a chance to meet NET viewers and listeners, share our programs and celebrate the return of NET’s over-the-air television signal, bringing full public television coverage back to the entire state. Television service was disrupted in April 2015 when an antenna fell off NET’s KTNE/Alliance tower.

Support NET

An engineer training to manage a track maintenance crew, Cate works for Union Pacific and lives in Fairbury. Her rail line runs from Gibbon to Marysville, Kansas. Cate’s enjoying her new job and her new state, and has become an avid NET Radio fan. She’s also chosen to support NET as a major donor.

Why?

• Listening to classical music – definitely.

• Local news – certainly.

• Gaining an international perspective – absolutely.

“It’s for people looking for sound journalism. It helps me work and it helps me be smarter and it helps me have a better perspective, it’s great,” she added.

“In my job you’re listening to loud trains all day, every day, so it’s nice to have something more relaxing to listen to when driving. NET’s local news is also a great resource. I love local politics and what is going on in my community. Having hourly updates on weather is really helpful, especially in my job.”

Young NET Donor is on the Right Track

Although she didn’t have extra cash while a student at Purdue University, she’s pleased to be able to support public media now.

“I asked, why don't I give back to the community in something I love and something I've put hours a day into? That would be NET Radio. I want to give back so that they can keep giving me these great programs,” Cate explained.

As part of the millennial generation, Cate is bucking the perception of young adults born in the 80s and 90s, some-times described as “generation we.”

“A lot of people like to say the millennial generation is the selfish generation. I completely disagree. I would say, ulti-mately, that what we see and what we want is authenticity and we want these characteristics in our media like PBS and NPR,” she added.
