The week-long experience, offered in Flagstaff and Cottonwood, gives kids the chance to meet new friends, learn about activities available in their community, and try new, fun ways to be physically active. This year, we had almost 40 campers who participated in rock climbing, hiking, swimming, gardening, field day, Bounce Boot Camp and more. Campers also enjoyed healthy lunches and snacks, and even learned how to make some themselves! See some of the highlights from camp below, and visit our Facebook page for more photos. Mindful Drinking

Chocolate Covered Banana Pops

Summer is in full swing, and with all the vacations, outdoor activities and sports, it’s important to remember to stay hydrated. And, it’s not just about how much you’re drinking. It’s important to be mindful of what you’re drinking!

Beverage industries often market to children and teens by using fun and enticing commercials or using someone famous, such

as an athlete, to appeal to kids who want to be more like that particular athlete. Studies have shown that sugary drinks are the number one source of added calories in teen’s diets. It is not uncommon for a teen to get 500 added calories per day from sugary drinks. As of 2011, 60 percent of girls and 70 percent of boys ages 2-19 drink at least one sugary drink per day. Approximately 16 percent of children’s total calorie consumption comes from added sugar!

When going down the beverage aisle at the grocery store, there are numerous drinks with added sugars, but often very few healthier options to choose from. There are so many drinks that contain added sugars that we often don’t even realize how much we are consuming. If you aren’t sure whether a drink is a healthy choice, check the

Directions: 1. Peel, then cut each banana in half crosswise and insert a craft stick into each half. 2. Place on a tray, cover with plastic wrap and place in the freezer until frozen, about 3 hours.3. Place the peanuts in a shallow dish or on a plate. 4. Melt the chocolate in the top of a double boiler over slightly simmering water, over the lowest possible heat, stirring frequently. Make sure the water is not touching the bottom of the top pan. 5. Pour the melted chocolate into a tall glass. 6. Dip each frozen banana into the chocolate, turning it to coat, and immediately roll in the peanuts. 7. Place on a tray covered in waxed paper. Serve immediately or wrap individually in plastic wrap or waxed paper and freeze for up to 2 weeks.

nutrition facts label. To see how much sugar is inside, use the formula–one teaspoon (1 tsp.) = four grams (4g.) of sugar. • One 20 oz. bottle of Coke has 64 g. of sugar (64÷4=16 tsp. of

sugar!)• One 20 oz. bottle of lemonade has 67 g. of sugar (67÷4=16 and ¾

tsp.)• One 8 oz. carton of chocolate milk, which is often served at

school lunches, has 24 g. of sugar (24÷4=6 tsp. of sugar!)• The average juice, organic or not, has about 20-24 g. in 8 oz.

(20÷4 & 24÷4=5-6 tsp. of sugar!)The recommended amount of sugary drinks for kids is 8 oz. or less per week. It’s important to be mindful of how much added sugar you are consuming throughout the day, because people whose diets are higher in sugar are more at risk for cavities, heart disease, obesity, Type 2 diabetes and kidney failure. When in doubt, drink water or a low-sugar beverage!
