    Comrades, Ladies and Mens Auxiliary,

    On Sunday June 7, 2015 myself, Dean Agardi, Bob Webber,Frank Skopp, and Harlee Ruenger, along with Mark Webber,and Marilyn Agardi went to VFW Post 10154 in Three Points tovisit the Vietnam Memorial Moving wall.On Saturday June 6, we lost a Past Post Commander MikeFoster, he was a long time member, a good friend, and he willbe missed.We have put up the suggestion box. If you have a suggestion orcomment please drop it in the box. Please sign the form you putin the box or it will not be addressed.In order to keep track of all the hours our volunteers work, I haveput together a volunteer sign-in sheet. Every time you volunteerwill you please sign the book and put down the hours you work.So at the end of my year as Commander the Post and I canthank all of you with a dinner and some awards. This is the leastwe can do for all the hard work you do.The Veterans of Foreign Wars has many programs for students.Patriots Pen is an essay contest for grades 6-8, Voice ofDemocracy is an essay for 9-12 grades. If you know any kidsthat are in grades 6-12 and you want to know more about theseprograms you can contact the Post Jr. vice Commander RichardMontgomery at the Post. There is also contest for Scout of theYear, Teacher of the Year, Police Officer, Firefighter and EMT ofthe Year. All these programs will be judged at the Post, Districtand Department levels here in Arizona. If you need any info onthese other program you can contact Jr. Vice commanderRichard Montgomery. The Post winners will then be forwardedto the District for judging. We will be looking for volunteers tohelp with our Buddy Poppy drives throughout the year.

  • Past Post Commander David Olsen and Past PostQuartermaster Jack Davis were awarded White Hats at thedepartment convention, for a job well done. They both put theheart and soul into this Post for the last two years. On behalfof the Post, I thank you both.We want VFW Post 549 to be known as The Friendly Post,so if you see someone at the Post you dont know, make apoint of saying Hi! and make them feel welcome. I have contacted the Presidents of both the Ladies and MensAuxiliaries to meet and discuss future events and projectsaround the Post. My plan for this year is to have all of uswork together on everything as one organization, instead ofworking as individual organizations. Jim Stutts, a Post member built and donated a very largesmoker to the Post. He delivered it on Friday June 19. Hethen fired it up and put 165 lbs of beef briskets, and porkshoulder in it and let it cook until 4pm Saturday June 2. Wetried to let Post members know about the free dinner, andaround 75 showed up, and were treated to some of the bestsmoked beef brisket and pork shoulder I have had. We allowe Jim a big thank you for the smoker and all he has donefor this Post.Membership is what keeps this Post alive. We need to recruitmore veterans to join our ranks. Please tell your friends aboutthis Post. Tell them we are trying to grow so we can helpmore veterans and their families. Remember, if you renewyour membership, you will get a free Friday fish dinner, thisincludes the Ladies and Mens Auxiliary. We will be having a 4th of July Party at the Post, with the helpof the Auxiliaries it should be a great time. The time anddetails are on the flyer in this newsletter. Please remember tobring a side or a dessert to share.

    Greetings Comrades, Brothers & Sisters:

    As we start our new Post year I would like to personallythank the members for electing me as your Senior ViceCommander. I will do my best to carry out my duties andresponsibilities to the highest degree. This is our Post, letsmake it a great one. We all need to back our CommanderRay Gerving and assist him when we can. Remembermembership is of high priority. We are all recruiters. Withoutmembers there would be no Post. Looking forward to theFourth of July event where we be having burgers and hotdogs and other great food. Please bring a side. I am surethe A Team will be cooking for your pleasure, with ChefHarlee at the grill. I had the privilege of attending theDepartment Convention for a day and it was a goodexperience. Our Past Commander Dave Olsen andQuartermaster Jack Davis got a well deserved award.Congratulations Comrades. Volunteers are always needed. Ifyou can help it would be greatly appreciated. A new Ace ofSpades drawing has started. There have been some rulechanges, so you might want to check them out. We nowhave a Suggestion Box. Lets be mature and put meaningfulsuggestions in the box! The purpose is to get ideas to helpmake your Post better, See you at the Post.

    In closing I would send a big thank you to Jim Stutts, one of our members, for his generous donation of a large smoker with propane tanks to the Post. Saturday June 20, 2015 Jim also donated approximately 140 pounds of meat and invited everyone at the Post to partake of the meal. There was a great turnout. Thank you Jim.

    Comrades, Sisters, and Brothers:

    We will soon be starting our 2015 campaign for Patriot'sPen and the Voice of Democracy competitions. Studententry deadlines for both are November 1st, 2015. Let's getthe word out to our students!

    Here are the basics for each competition:

    1. Patriot's Pen

    Conducted nationwide, this VFW-sponsored youth essaycompetition gives students an opportunity to write essaysexpressing their views on an annual patriotic theme. Weinvite you to join the more than 120,000 students whoparticipated last year in the contest. The national winnerswill receive at least $500. The first place national award iscurrently $5000 plus an all-expense paid trip toWashington, D.C. for the winner and a parent or guardian.The competition is open to 6th, 7th, and 8th grade studentsenrolled by the November 1st deadline.

    2. Voice of Democracy

    Since 1947, the Voice of Democracy has been theVFW's premier scholarship program. Each year, almost40,000 high school students compete for more than $2million in scholarships and incentives. Students competeby writing and recording an audio essay on an annualpatriotic theme. This year's theme is: "My Vision forAmerica." The competition is open to students in grades 9through 12 by the November 1st deadline.

  • Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56men who signed the Declaration of Independence? Five signers were captured by the British as traitors,and tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army;another had two sons captured. Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds orhardships of the Revolutionary War. They signed and they pledged their lives, theirfortunes, and their sacred honor. What kind of men were they? Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists. Eleven were merchants, nine were farmers andlarge plantation owners; men of means, well-educated,but they signed the Declaration of Independenceknowing full well that the penalty would be death ifthey were captured.

    The ordeal of the IndianapolisA little before midnight on Sunday, July 29,945, the heavy cruiserIndianapolis was returning from a secret mission to the Pacificatoll of Tinian. She had delivered parts for the atomic bomb thatwould be dropped on Hiroshima eight days later. Headed towardLeyte, the vessel was ripped by torpedoes from a Japanese sub-marine. Within 15 minutes she had vanished beneath the surface,the last American ship sunk by the enemy in World War II.

    The ship sank so quickly that of the 1,199 crewmen, only some850, including Capt. Charles McVay, escaped. The terrifying truthwas that it would take days for the U.S. naval command to dis-cover the Indianapolis was missing. Her survivors were aloneand unnoticed, except by the sharks.

    The effects of exposure and lack of fresh water were less grue-some but even more deadly. After 48 hours in the sea, the kapoklife jackets became waterlogged and began dragging men under.

    Finally at 5 minutes past noon on August 2, they were spotted. Anavy pilot on a routine flight had given in to mild curiosity anddipped his PV-1 Ventura aircraft to inspect what he thought wasan oil slick. Rescue ships arrived, but by then the crew had been in the waterfor 4 full days. Only 316 men and Captain McVay survived. McVaywas court-martialed, the only U.S. Navy captain in WWII to facetrial for losing a ship. Many of his crew believed he had beenmade a scapegoat for naval brass, who by failing to keep track ofthe ship's location had botched the rescue. The captain was foundguilty but within a year the navy remitted his sentence.
