“THE HISTORY OF THE PETALUMA YACHT CLUB”

By Al Alys ~ August 2004

In 1977 Bob McLaughlin was inspired and enthusiastic about the prospects of

realizing a marina in Petaluma. He already had a name for the marina in his

mind, “Egg Harbor”. It was reminiscent of the heritage of Petaluma once being

known as the egg basket of the world. Bob felt that the creation of a yacht club

in town would help the cause of building a marina. With that objective, he set

about contacting a number of people to explore forming a yacht club. He also

placed an advertisement in the classified section under ‘boats for sale” in the lo-

cal Argus Courier Newspaper calling for prospective members.

The first turnout of interested folks gathered at the house of Gene Riggs because

he had the most room. There was an interesting collection of people, both sail

and power boaters, a few non boaters, members of other clubs and varying back-

grounds. A total of approximately15 people. One experienced elderly gentleman

with a grand head of gray hair and dressed in full yachting tradition set a tone of

distinction to the meeting as an advisor.

The initial meeting accomplished four things. First, that yes a yacht club should

be formed, second, it should be called Petaluma Yacht Club (PYC), third that

Gene Riggs be the leader and last another meeting should be scheduled. Before

another meeting could be scheduled Gene Riggs announced he was moving to

Guam. The clubs first unofficial resignation.

After that Al Alys arranged for the club to hold its meetings in the community

room of what was then Northbay Savings Bank where he worked at Petaluma

Boulevard and C Street.

Meetings were devoted to organization, beginning with Al Alys drafted as Com-

modore, Doug Robinson, Vice Commodore, and Tony Smith, Rear Commodore.

Discussion ensued in how to attract members, what activities to have, dues, a

burgee, among other things. A good portion of the meetings were captured by

Bob McLaughlin with regard to his devotion to have the city pursue the building

of a marina.

In November of 1977, the PYC planned its first event. A barbeque for members,

guests and prospective members at Walnut Park at the Boulevard and D Street.

Page 2: July 2015 · 2019. 8. 26. · three power and one sail, donned signal flags and the new burgee for the parade. As it happened, it rained and the wind blew. The parade was carried

Page 2 PETALUMA YACHT CLUB

The day of the BBQ there were intermittent showers, so the feast was moved indoors to the community room.

However, the cooking took place at the park and the food was transported the one block back through the rain

to the community room. In spite of the circumstances, the PYC began its tradition of always having fun under

any circumstances.

After the holidays of 1977, the club asked one of its members, Emily Daily, who had artistic ability to design a burgee. The club wanted a design that identified with Petaluma, but not cows. The burgee that the club has

was her very first design and was immediately adopted by club members.

By April of 1978 the members had their burgees and were ready to display it. Opening Day on San Francisco

Bay in April was discussed but it was a stretch of time from Gilardia (Lakeville Marina) for the several boats

to go. It was decided to have a parade from Lakeville Marina to the downtown basin and back. Four boats,

three power and one sail, donned signal flags and the new burgee for the parade. As it happened, it rained

and the wind blew. The parade was carried out with very few witnesses at the turning basin, including the

people tending to the bridge. The cotton signal flags were not colorfast and some of the boats had colorful

decks afterward. Upon returning to Lakeville Marina drenched, everyone headed up to the bar and in keeping

with tradition, carried on a good party, capping opening day.

The club continued to attract members and was composed of 50% boaters and 50% non-boaters. Dues were

established at $25.00 per year. Meetings continued in the bank’s community room.

During June of each year, Petaluma has the Sonoma Marin Fair which is a 4H and FFA fair. On the last day

of the fair, there used to be a parade from downtown Petaluma to the fairgrounds. The PYC entered the pa-

rade to make itself known to the community and attract new members. Harry Simpson, a charter member and

previous winner of several San Francisco opening day decorated boat contests, designed the flat for the pa-

rade. His friend from Novato furnished a 24-foot trailerable boat and truck. The entire bow was embraced

with a large egg of cardboard that looked like the egg on the burgee. The rest of the boat was decorated with

blue and white streamers together with the words “Petaluma Yacht Club” on both sides. Riding in the egg

was a member dressed in a costume she made all covered with feathers to look like a new chick. She would

pop up and down from the egg along the route. The truck pulling the boat played songs such as “Anchors

Away” and “Row-Row-Row Your Boat”. Other members walked along the float in full yacht dress carrying

paddles and signs saying “Join the newly hatched Yacht Club”. A number of new members were gained as a

result of that effort. Building the float over a month’s period with food and beverage strengthened the mem-

bership.

Harry Simpson, having been a cruise chairman many times for the San Rafael YC and the Marin Power Squadron suggested that the PYC begin cruising. Harry organized the first cruise for the club which became the annual Delta Cruise. It was a one week cruise ending on Labor Day. Three boats joined in, Doug and

Shirley Robinson aboard the “Canadian Mist” a new 25-foot fiberglass Century, Al and Shirley Alys aboard “Crackers” a 26-foot 1963 Chris Craft, and Harry and Betty Simpson aboard the “Tiger II” a 26-foot 1962 Chris Craft. Also aboard were three teenagers. Two days before the cruise the Simpsons hosted a pre-Delta

gathering at their house to go over the trip and sound advice. This gathering established the tradition of a pre-Delta party that occurred every year.

Ted Adams - Commodore

Hello one and all.

For those of you that were won-

dering why there was no news of

the board meeting in May, there

was only one thing done and it

was the voting in of new members. Otherwise we

had no quorum and that’s the end of that.

The June meeting was different. We had a quor-

um and a stack of things to get through. First and

foremost, our esteemed RCO, Mike Freeman, had

decided to resign his post and we decided to ac-

cept, without discussion. Seems the guy is way

over loaded, and had to give it up. Thanks Mike

Freeman for your service, I hope you will be able

to return someday. He is however staying on as

the cruise director, doing an excellent job there. In

his place David Quist has taken over the RCO slot

until the end of the year, and might take it from

there, TBD. Speaking of the new RCO, the stove

is fixed, He and I got the drain cleared this week,

and the galley is all cleaned up due to David’s

hard work. He’s got a long row to hoe, but he’s

doing great!

Which by the way leaves 2 vacancies on the

FLAG OFFICER’S REPORTS

board, and the request by the current secretary

(David Quist) his position (as secretary) as well. If

you’re inclined helping the club, now is the time.

There were some minor tax issues discussed at the

meeting, and then the membership drive. Holy cow,

what a slew of new members. We approved 8 in the

last two months, 2 more next month, I believe they

will add to the character of the club immensely. I

hope that we will add at least 10 more new member-

ships to the club by the end of the year bringing us to

near 100 memberships.

Speaking of cruise outs, this weekend (6/27-28) is

the cruise to South beach, the weekend after is to

Martinez for the 4th of July. If you have a boat, and

you use it, come out with us, we always have a good

time. Contact Mike Freeman.

I hope you are all enjoying the new member profiles,

I wanted to bring them back. I asked Denise Calvert

to try and get folks to write the articles about them-

selves and I believe she has had great success.

Looking forward to seeing you down at the club

Ted

First- let me say I am as surprised as you are about this change! After reading Mike’s emails about his rea-sons to resign as RCO it is complete-ly understandable and I personally thank him for all his efforts to date in

this role and for all he has done for the club so far! The good news is he and Beth remain with the club!

Second- part of my accepting this new role without any ‘seasoning’ was getting many promises of sup-port from many bridge and board members! In fact, several of the roles of the RCO are being divided up and being managed by others to help me out.

#1- Cruise Outs ---will be continued by Mike Free-man- Yayyyyyyy!!! Whewwwww…..

#2- Rentals ---- will be handled by Director John

Wolthausen- Yayyyyyyy!!! Whewwww

#3- Cruise Ins --- will be handled by-- me----- aw shucks……… and all the rest!!!

No, really, Al Alys has promised the full support of the Buildings and Grounds committee to help me with maintenance issues. They probably know me and a hammer can do more damage than good so it is best to ‘support’ me than have me do it alone!!!

I am much better at the bar!

In closing, I will try very hard to be a good RCO for the remainder of the term. I have already been involved in overseeing the oven repair, the drains being cleaned out and REPLACING the dining room Direct TV box!!! How about that!!!! Over and Out!!!

David Quist, RCO

Tina Powell - Vice Commodore

Happy Summer! Our summer is off

to a great start – a big Thank you to

the O’Leary’s for doing a great job at

the bar. Likewise to all our bartend-

ers, all the hard work that goes into the bar. This is

why the boaters love to come into PYC, we are fun

folks who like to show our guest a good time.

Speaking of a good time, I would like to introduce

this month’s special. Good old Budweiser is on sale

for $1.00 a bottle and if you top that with a pour of

Tequila only $3.00. Now I am not saying to pour

the Tequila on the beer. Yes that’s right A bottle of

beer with a shot of Tequila. Only $3.00.

As most may have heard we did have plumbing is-

sues. Meltdown! So this is just a reminder when

draining the three sinks at the bar, please drain them

one at a time, if we drain all three of them at the

same time, it may cause the drains to back up.

If you are looking for the sodas, they are in the

soda gun. Coke, Diet Coke, Tonic, Soda Water,

Ginger Ale, Lemon Lime. Come on Down!

The Director of the month is Gerry Reinartz

The Bartenders for the month of July are as

follows:

3 - 4 4th of July Honor Bar

10 - 11 GM Madrid

17 -18 Sibbald

24- 25 Townley

The plan was to meet in the middle of San Pablo Bay near Pt. Pinole since two boats would be coming from

Port Sonoma and San Rafael. With the help of a compass, radio and watch, the boats finally met….but not

near Pt. Pinole. After that, Harry Simpson was designated as the head chicken and his little chicks. With the

burgees flying, the itinerary was as follows:

Saturday: Brannon Island State Park

Sunday & Monday: Lost Slough Anchorage

Tuesday: Walnut Grove

Wednesday: Disappointment Slough Anchorage

Thursday: Village West, Stockton

Friday & Saturday: Potato slough Anchorage

Sunday: San Joaquin YC

Monday, Labor Day: Ride Home

Of note, during this cruise, the first day a brief stop was made at Antioch to visit the club’s first associate

members Adam and Lorraine Denter aboard their boat “Sweet Lorraine”. They were regular members at

Bridgehead YC and later joined most Delta cruises. The other note of interest was hearing an unhappy call on

the radio from a San Rafael YC member aboard “Montego Bay”, aground on Steamboat Slough. Off to the

rescue, the PYC, using two boats was able to pull the San Rafael YC boat, a 40-footer, off the sand. The

club’s reputation spread. With a stop for fuel at Glen Cove, all made it back through San Pablo Bay to home

port. A week afterwards, members met at the Alys’ house for a post-Delta party, and on-again, off-again tra-

dition, with a unanimous vow that there will be an annual club Delta cruise, but with a two-week duration.

In keeping with boating Harry Simpson arranged the first Bay cruise with the Marin Power Squadron to San

Leandro Marina. There were three power boats and two sail boats from PYC. The cruise began at Port Sono-

ma before dawn in pea soup fo gand a minus tide. An infamous start for the first bay cruise. Save for the

knowledgeable Marin Power Squadron cruise, the PYC chickens clung to their sterns and made it safely to

San Leandro. Charter member Bob McLaughlin got started about an hour later from the downtown basin in

his 26-foot Thunderbird sail boat and arrived in San Leandro at 8 pm. He joined in the dinner, slept a few

hours, and headed back to Petaluma at 4 am. Arriving at 6:30 pm. He reinforced the sail boater’s dedication to

the club.

During the latter part of 1978 work was underway to formalize the club so it can begin to apply to PICYA

(Pacific Interclub Yachting Association) for membership. A copy of the by-laws from the San Rafael YC was

obtained which with minor changes was adopted by the membership. The existing officers agreed to serve

another year. Charter member, Barry Parkinson, an attorney, assisted in incorporating the club into a Califor-

nia non-profit organization. Equipped with evidence of incorporation, and a recognized burgee, a committee

applied for membership in PIYCA. Upon a successful interview with the PICYA membership committee, the

board voted the club into a one-year probationary status. The 1979 PICYA yearbook featured the club in the

new applications section. A proud moment with the burgee in full color.

In December 1978, the club had its first annual Christmas party that was held at Lidos on Washington and

Petaluma Boulevard. The club finished the year financially ahead as you can see from the first financial report

on the next page.
