The students have settled into their summer schedules and are enjoying our summer activities. Several of our students from Miss Kim and Miss April’s room have recently completed their kindergarten screening. While it’s always exciting to see them enter this new phase of their lives, we’re always sad to see them move on. However, a lot of good memories have been made for all of us. After much prayer and consideration, the daycare board and the church elders have given us the green light to offer an all day kindergarten class for the 2014-2015 school year! Because this is our first year and we wanted to keep the class small, we will only have 12 openings. What does this mean to you? First and foremost, no more alternate school days and trying to remember what day your child is in school. Second, your child’s schedule doesn’t really change. They can be dropped off as early as 6:30 and be picked up after work. Their school day will be 6 hours (exact starting and ending time is still being decided) with before and after school care provided. And third, there are no teacher work days or snow days for you to contend with. The cost is $130.00 per week. This includes before and after school care, breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack. Mrs. Natalie Kraly who works in our office will be our kindergarten teacher. Natalie graduated from Mt. Vernon Nazarene College in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education. We are currently enrolling for our fall preschool classes as well. Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9:00-11:30am. The four year old class will be held on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9:00-11:30am. Pre-K classes are for those children who miss the August 1 cutoff for attending kindergarten and is held Monday through Thursday from noon to 3:00pm. All classes will be taught by Miss Jami Hinson. Jami will be starting her fourth year as our preschool teacher and is looking forward to another great year. Several of our families arrive before each morning before 6:30 am. Because we are licensed by the state and must fall under their guidelines, we cannot open our doors before 6:30. Legally we are not allowed to open our doors before that time. Please plan accordingly. You are free to sit in the parking lot in your car and wait until 6:30. I know that mornings can be hectic for our families. Parents are trying to get themselves ready for work and usher everyone out the door. If you child is eating their breakfast on the way do the daycare, please be sure they are finished before entering the building. It might seem like an easy solution to have them bring their breakfast with them into the classroom but its a problem for the teachers. First, it’s very distracting to the other students. Many times, the student that brought the breakfast suddenly isn’t hungry and they want to leave their breakfast. The teacher usually has to stop what they’re doing to clean up depending on what the student is eating. If it’s fast food the student then usually has to go to the bathroom to wash their hands. Also, the office staff cannot have your child sit in the office while they eat. From time to time we are needed in a classroom and cannot leave your child sitting here by themselves while they eat breakfast. As a reminder, we serve breakfast in the cafeteria from 6:30-7:30 am.

The Teddy Bears–Miss Barb, Miss Ashley, Miss Betty As a result of our recent baby boom, our infant room is growing by leaps and bounds! This month we would like to welcome Avery B., Avery G., Grady, Jake and Mason. The babies are siblings of our current families so they are already near and dear to our hearts. We look forward to welcoming these families into the Infant Room once again.

July 2014 Newsletter Q: My kids love exploring the woods behind our house, and I’m worried that this summer will bring about the first case of poison ivy. What is the best way to treat a reaction should they experience one?

A: Some of the most common poisonous plants include poison ivy, poison oak and poison sumac. Upon exposure, the immune system revs up and attacks the plant oil. This results in an allergic reaction, causing an irritating rash.

Pets, clothing and tools can spread the oil. And since the oil remains allergenic for years, unsuspecting spring gardeners can get the rash from last season’s gloves and shovels.

If you come into contact with these poisonous plants, you should wash well with plenty of soap and water. Unfortunately, this won’t always prevent the rash because the oil bonds fast to human skin and is nearly impossible to remove within 30 minutes of exposure.

Once you have the rash, it typically lasts two to three weeks. Meanwhile, you can treat the symptoms and prevent infection. For mild cases, over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream and oral antihistamines such as Benadryl work well to control inflammation and itching. Topical antibiotic ointment may prevent bacterial infection when the skin is broken open from repeated scratching.

If you have widespread rash, face or genital involvement, or signs of infected skin, it’s time to see your doctor. In these cases, prescription steroids or antibiotics might be necessary.

Prevention by avoidance is best, so take the time to learn about and recognize these plants. Be sure to consult your child’s primary care physician with questions and concerns.
