President'sMessageHello Silverado!

Did everyone find some great deals at the Parade of Garage sales? Did you manage to get your garage cleaned out? How about the space under the stairs? Don’t worry, mine are still full too. Next year!

July 13th is our Bird Watching Event at Radio Creek, on the west side of Silverado. Our Membership Direct and resident Biologist Nick Bartok is going to be showing you what to look for and how to do it. If you are looking for more information on what to bring or where exactly to meet, find us on facebook or email Nick directly at [email protected].

Schools. May has been - breakneck. On May 1st nine new schools were announced for Calgary. None of them were for Silverado. On May 27th the Calgary Board of Education released it’s new Capital Plan. On May 28th the CBE voted that new Capital Plan into effect with no public input or debate. We went from being 17th* on the list to 33rd. With only six new schools announced for Calgary in the last five years, it could potentially mean that we aren’t going to get a CBE school for Silverado within the next thirty years. As larger communities are developed around us, we will continue to fall on the list of potential candidates for a school. In fact, you’ll prob-ably see schools in neighbouring communities mod-ernized before we get our first school. It’s something we are trying to rectify. We’ve sent letters to the CBE and the Premier about the issue and we’re doing everything we can to get information out there about this. We’d love as much help as we can get from the community, but if you do one thing about this it’s vote. This fall, get informed about the candidates running in Ward 14 and go out and vote. Tell your neighbours to vote and tell their neighbours to vote too while you’re at it. It’s Oc-tober 21st. A great turnout from Silverado is going to show the people making decisions about our commu-nity that we aren’t afraid to have our voices heard.

Talk to you soon!

Sincerely, Mike Bradshaw

SCA Recreational FacilitiesThe SCA is in the current planning stages for outdoor recreational facilities and we need your help to de-termine what our recreational needs are for the com-munity. Currently we have three soccer fields and two baseball diamonds. We would like to get your thoughts on what other outdoor recreation sites you would like. Some of the outdoor recreation sites to choose from are tennis courts, basketball court with multiple hoops, out-door hockey/skating rink, beach volleyball sand court, skateboard area, horseshoe pits, bocce ball court and splash park. These are just some of the possible ideas that we could build on SCA land for the future use of all residents. We will be putting a recreational site survey on the SCA website : www.silveradoca.com. We encour-age your thoughts, ideas and feedback on possible outdoor recreational sites for residents of all ages.

Thank you for your participation in the survey!!

Silverado Community garden: Finding Our RootsRumor has it...Gardening is great stress relief! Get away from a clean and orderly desk. Get dirty. Digging in the dirt brings us back to our childhood. Watching a plant grow from a seed into a vegetable can be a beautiful experience.

Did you know…Community gardens were developed during the years between WW I and WW II. Not only were these gardens a way of feeding people, they provided jobs for the unemployed. “War Gardens” or “Victory Gar-dens” relieved food shortages throughout North Ameri-ca and Europe.

These are the words the Silverado Community Garden Team have come up with to describe our future garden:•connection and support•community building•accessibility•tranquility•inclusivity•shrubs•organic•excitement! fun!•kids, seniors, moms and dads•colour•shade•carbon footprint•multi-seasonal•beautiful

What words would you add to the list?

Kid ConnectionsSimple ways to connect with your child each and every dayIn our busy lives, it is sometimes difficult to find time to really connect with our children on a daily basis. Here are some ways that you can spontaneously or routinely connect and acknowledge your children every day.

Prepare Meals TogetherAfter a long day, we as parents often scramble to get food on the table to feed our families as quickly as pos-sible. It may take a few minutes longer, but encouraging your child to help out can give you the opportunity to discuss each other’s day.

Bedtime Highs and Lows:As you tuck your child into bed at night, discuss the day’s events with them. You can also use this time to discuss the “highs” and “lows” of the day. This is par-ticularly beneficial when you, or your child, are dealing with stressful situations or events. It can be quite valu-able to share your own stressors with your children, but remember to maintain a positive attitude, and don’t

get into too much detail. You want your child to learn from your experiences without creating more stress for them.

Play Together:Play is vital to a child’s development. As parents, we sometimes forget this, or may not know how to join our children as they play. Simply sitting down beside your young child and picking up a toy is an unobtrusive way to acknowledge their need to play, while showing her/him that you are taking a moment to spend your time with them. For older children, you may choose to pick up a colouring book and some colouring pencils and invite them to colour with you. Or, add some toilet pa-per rolls and tape to their block building area and ask them what they think you could build together.

Skip the Dishes, and Head Outside After Dinner:Once in a while, it’s ok to show our children that we take joy in spontaneity and having fun as a family. You’ll be glad that you did, and your children will thank you!

Acknowledging your children and sharing your time with them, is one of the greatest gifts you can give.

Did you know?• it is normal to see small

groups of coyotes during certain times of the year.

• Coyotes looking for mates gather in January or february

• By July and into fall, family groups travel together in search of food. Coyote sightings may be more common in summer, particularly when people make frequent use of urban parks or green belt areas.

• Coyotes are capable of running at speeds of up to 64 km/hr (40 mi/hr).

• on average, coyotes weigh 9 to 23 kg (20 to 50 lbs.), similar to a medium-sized dog.URBAn COYOtES

Coyote EncountersIf you encounter a coyote, make the experience unpleas-ant for the animal by making it feel unwelcome in your neighbourhood. Even if you are not concerned about problems with coyotes, they should not learn that neigh-bourhoods are safe places to feed and rest.

•Respond to their presence aggressively by making yourself appear large; wave your arms overhead or thrust long objects, such as a walking stick, toward the coyote.•Throw rocks, sticks or other objects toward the animal.•Shout in a deep voice and maintain eye contact.•If the coyote continues to approach, back away slowly

and move toward buildings or human activity.•Do not turn away or run. This may encourage the coy-

ote to chase you.•Dog repellents and pepper spray products can be effec-

tive in deterring coyotes.

Protect Your Pets•Do not allow your cat to roam.•Supervise your pets when they are outside.•Pick up dog feces and be aware that dog urine may also

attract coyotes.•If your dog is in heat, keep it inside or away from areas

where they may encounter coyotes.

•Always walk your dog on a leash.•If you spot a coyote, pick up your small dog. Ensure your

large dog is leashed and under your control. Back away slowly and leave the area immediately.

Some people believe eliminating coyotes is the solution. However, trapping has proven ineffective. Poisoning or other methods pose risks to other animals and children. Removing coyotes creates room for others and the pop-ulation may actually increase in response.

Coyotes in Towns and CitiesCoyotes have established themselves within many urban areas in North America. Parks and river valleys in towns and cities provide good habitats and a variety of food sources for coyotes. They can make beneficial neigh-bours as they help control rodent species, such as mice and ground squirrels.

Coyotes are curious, adapt easily to new situations and are not picky eaters. They primarily feed on rabbits, mice and squirrels. In cities, they also eat pet food garbage, compost and bird feed. If a coyote frequents your neigh-bourhood, it’s because it has found shelter or food.

Serious conflicts between people and coyotes are rare. However, wildlife are unpredictable, and coyote can pose a public risk. Coyotes are not usually aggressive

toward humans but can become bolder around people when they learn backyards, playgrounds, or parks can provide them with easy meals. The likelihood of a prob-lem encounter increases if coyotes are fed by people, as they lose their natural fear of humans.

Help Your Children Be SafeTeach your children how to respond to coyote encoun-ters and remind them about the importance of not leav-ing food or garbage in school yards, parks or in your backyard. If you know there are coyotes in the area, su-pervise your children when they are outside.

Avoid Attracting Coyotes to Your Neighbourhood•Do not feed coyotes. Feeding coyotes inevitably leads

to unsafe situations that can result in human injury.•Pet food will attract coyotes. Bring in feeding dishes

immediately after your pets have eaten or feed pets inside.•Dispose of garbage and compost materials in contain-

ers that have secure lids, or keep them in the garage or a shed.•Take your garbage out only on collection day.•Do not litter in school yards and parks.•Keep a clean backyard. Remove seeds and suet put out

for birds as well a fallen fruit. These foods can attract mice and squirrels, which are prey for coyotes.•Make sure your fence as no holes or gaps that curious

coyote can use to access your property.•Trim out thick shrubs and the bottom of trees to pre-

vent coyotes or prey animals, such as rabbits or squir-rels, from using those spaces as shelter.•Coyotes and other wildlife may use the spaces under

decks, patios and outbuildings as shelter. Close off these spaces with a durable wire mesh.•Talk to y our neighbours about following the same pre-

ventative measures.

If you see a coyote that is too sick or injured to move, or if a coyote bites, nips or makes other physical contact, call the nearest Fish and Wildlife office of Alberta Sustainable Resource Development at 310-000 toll-free. To reach the coyote information line: 403-2977-7789.

Crime Prevention Delivered to your inboxThe Calgary Police Service is going digital with commu-nity crime prevention messages.

The Service is expanding the Police and Community Awareness Program (PCAP) to include e-mail and text capabilities, and is being rebranded “The Hub”.

Starting March 1, 2013, Calgarians who want informa-tion about crime and other activity in their community can sign up to receive voicemail, email or text alerts as part of The Hub, the new CPS information headquarters.

The system, originally known as the Police and Com-munity Telephone (PACT), has sent approximately 2,700 voicemail messages to Calgarians since 1993.

The Hub will alert citizens to important situations such as criminal activity or requests for public assistance in cases such as missing persons. The Hub will also be used for proactive community information such as crime prevention advice, and promotion of commu-nity events.

More than 64,000 households and nearly 6,500 busi-nesses subscribed to PCAP. Current subscribers will be required to re-register with the new system in order to keep receiving alerts.

The Hub will also help deliver messages to Calgarians based on several factors including demographics and their geographic location.

To sign up, visit www.calgarypolice.ca.

The Hub is proudly sponsored by Encana.

Wagonstage Children’s theatreSummer break means thinking of all the ways to keep children active, entertained and engaged. Wagonstage Children’s theatre is a great choice. This year’s play ‘This Place is a Zoo’ by playwright Nicola Elson, is all about a little girl with a wild imagination. Trying to cope with the world that just won’t stop changing, Cynthia meets whooping cranes, elephants and gorillas as she sets out on her adventures.

Every summer since 1971, The City of Calgary partners with the University of Calgary’s Drama Department to bring interactive, educational children’s theatre to life. Wagonstage is a travelling theatre production written and directed by theatre professionals and designed and acted by graduate and undergraduate Drama students. Wagonstage has always been committed to new work produced by local artists. Approximately half of the

plays produced for Wagonstage over the last 42 years have been commissioned from Calgary playwrights.

Each Wagonstage performance not only gives children a front seat at the performance, it gives them a leading role in the play, providing many opportunities to inter-act with the characters.

Wagonstage sets up in the great outdoor spaces in our city, so whether you’re taking the kids to a swim les-son, experiencing one of the city’s fabulous festivals or events or spending a day at the Calgary Zoo, there’s bound to be a performance taking place near you.

Performance schedule:•July 1 Canada Dayyc Prince’s Island Park•July 3 – 5 Cardel Place•July 8 -12 Southland Leisure Centre•July 15 – 19 The Genesis Centre for

Community Wellness•July 22 – July 26 Trico Centre•July 29 – August 1 Riley Park•August 6 – 9 & 12 – 16 The Calgary Zoo

Lots of people get a new puppy in the spring and summer when they can devote more time to a new fam-ily member and complete house-training without braving the snow and ice…I did. This is probably the most time consuming and occa-sionally frustrating part of adopting a new dog. I schedule time on the initial puppy examination to give clients housetraining advice. I try to gear the advice to their lifestyle. I follow up on housetraining at each examination, and I encourage clients to call the clinic if any advice given is just not working for them. Puppies are like any other living creature, no two are alike.

We acquired a new Papillon puppy last week. I had forgotten how fast and coordinated small breeds are compared to a large breed puppy that matures later. On the other hand, my Labrador puppy litters are going outside by four weeks even at sub-zero temperatures. They leave for new homes at seven weeks well-along with their housetrain-ing. Many small puppies are kept on newspaper and do not go outside. Puppies raised on pee-pads or news-paper inside can take a lot longer to readjust to outdoor potties.

First and foremost, never leave a puppy loose and unsupervised. If the puppy can’t be watched confine him. Don’t monitor by com-mittee. Someone must be

responsible for catching the puppy every time he squats to teach him this is the big no-no. Give a loud growling “NO”, clap your hands, and then rush the pup out to the appro-priate spot, there you will then tell him what a marvelous baby he is. Do not punish for the puddle in the hallway from ten minutes ago. Pup-pies quickly learn they are in trouble when there is pee or poo present and the owner walks in, so they cower and “look ashamed”. They don’t un-derstand the problem started with the act of urinating or defecating, unless this is where the correction is given. They will eventually get it, but it takes longer and causes confusion. You have five seconds after a behav-ior to praise or punish and have the puppy associate the reaction to the action. Timing is the cornerstone of all obedience training. A punish-ment involves only a scary sound.

The best confinement is a dog ken-nel. A puppy can be quickly popped into the cage if you can’t watch him. Most puppies are clean and will not soil themselves in a small space. My Labrador puppy crate is too big for my tiny Papillon so she pooped on one end this morning and stayed

clean at the other end. I need to shrink my crate for a week or two. This is exactly why I encourage my clients to call me if any housetrain-ing or behavior recommendations I give don’t come together. We may need to tweak advice.

Bring the puppy to the area of the yard you want him to use for elimi-nation; every time you remove him from the kennel, after eating, when he wakes up, and if he starts to sniff around. Use a command. Mine is “Hurry Up”. When the puppy squats tell him what a wonderful brilliant baby he is, use a treat if you want to. Feed your puppy his last meal of the day at least four hours prior to bedtime and take away water two hours before bedtime. At bed-time make sure the puppy pees and poops. Most puppies can go six to eight hours overnight in the crate. If you feed meals at set times, not free choice, you can usually figure out the schedule when the puppy needs to defecate each day.

Good luck and remember not all home environments and previous training support easy housetraining. Seek further advice and get creative if classic training tips do not trans-late to your situation or lifestyle.

Howdy (and a tip of the hat),

The next hundred years of the Stampede is soon to begin. Yahoo! I hope you get out and enjoy it, right after you read this tale of $52 million.

Your property tax bill is broken into two parts: the city’s property tax, and the education tax that the city collects and remits to the province. In March 2013, the Province decided they were going to give you a break on the educa-tion portion of your property taxes. This amounts to about $52 million in total, or about $126 annually for the average residential property owner. Two years ago, Council voted to automatically take any ‘vacated’ tax surplus from the Prov-ince (I voted against this).

That is how Council ended up with $52 million, and it is not “one-time money”. This will become part of the base property tax that you pay every year, onto which all future increases will be compounded.

It is my job to listen to what you have to say. There are five choices for how this money could be spent (they can be found at www.calgary.ca/52million), and I URGE you to contact me with your opinion, because I AM listening. The issue will be coming to Council on July 22nd.

It is also my job to cast a vote on this issue, and it is no secret that giving it back to taxpayers is my current favou-rite. Some have said that this option would make no dif-ference to Calgarians because $126 dollars is such a small sum. Calling any sum of money irrelevant sets a dangerous precedent, but for now let’s assume that an extra $126 in your pocket is inconsequential because that is not really the point. The point is the $126 is not extra for you; it’s ex-tra for the City! The point is that the Provincial government lowered taxes, so YOU could get the money back! If the city continued to charge 7% GST when it was lowered to 5%, I wonder how well that would have been accepted.

You can contact me anytime at 403-268-1653, or [email protected], with any opinions you might have. For general City inquiries, you can now use your smart-phone with the new 311 App. I’m proud to have played a part in the streamlining of 311, of which this new app is a result. See www.calgary.ca/ward14 for a history and details on how to get the 311 app.

Finally, don’t forget to join me in the Southcentre Mall parking lot for the Ward 14 Communities BBQ on Septem-ber 21st. We’ll be celebrating Ward 14’s Community Asso-ciations. See www.calgary.ca/ward14/events for details.

New legislation to improve organ and tissue donation ratesThe Redford government is taking action to improve Alberta’s organ and tissue donation rates and lower transplant wait times across the country, in an effort to save and improve more lives.

The government brought forward a motion to adopt Private Member’s Bill, the Human Tissue and Organ Donation Amend-ment Act, 2013 — or Bill 207 — as a government bill.

The Human Tissue and Organ Donation Amendment Act will establish one agency to co-ordinate organ and tissue donation activities in Alberta, including work to increase public aware-ness. This agency will report to the Minister of Health. The legislation also proposes the creation of an organ and tissue consent-to-donate registry. Albertans who are willing to do-nate their organs and/or tissue will be able to provide online consent.

Alberta lags behind other provinces in donation rates for organs and tissues. The province’s deceased organ donation rate was 16-17 donors per million population from 1995 to 2005; by 2011, the rate had dropped to 5-7 donors per million population. This compares to 16.3 donors per million population in Ontario and 11.8 donors per million population in British Columbia in 2011.

Alberta empowers more students to succeedAlberta is giving teachers more tools to help students succeed by introducing new, more student-friendly assessments that will replace the existing Provincial Achievement Tests (PATs).

The series of new computer-based tests - known as Student Learning Assessments - will be developed by experts and ad-ministered at the start of Grades 3, 6 and 9. This will better en-able parents and teachers to be aware of a child’s strengths or areas needing improvement over the course of the school year to support more personalized learning.

The tests maintain a strong focus on literacy and numeracy, but will also help educators and parents understand how well students demonstrate competencies such as creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving.

While most students are comfortable taking such tests on a computer, traditional paper copies will also be available.

Grade 3 students will be first to write the new assessments, with pilots starting in September 2014. Full implementation for Grade 3 is expected by September 2015. Pilots for Grades 6 and 9 are scheduled to begin in 2015 and 2016, respectively.

Alberta Education will continue to work with the Alberta Teach-ers’ Association, Alberta School Boards’ Association, College of Alberta School Superintendents, Alberta School Councils’ As-sociation and the Alberta Assessment Consortium to develop and test the Student Learning Assessment process.

Pension plans now available to all AlbertansThis spring, our government passed the Pooled Registered Pension Plans Act. This allows any working Albertan – includ-ing the self-employed and those working in small or medium sized companies – to join a pension plan.

Research has shown us that many middle-income Canadians are not saving enough money to sustain their current lifestyle into retirement. If this trend continues, a great number of peo-ple will have to cut back significantly in their quality of life once they reach retirement. Obviously, this is not ideal, and that’s why we’re reminding Albertans to get an early start on their retirement savings.

Now that the legislation has passed, we are in the process of writing regulations for these pension plans. Expect to see pooled pensions available in 2014.

Community NewsOne of my favourite parts of being an MLA is going to schools and speaking with students. Recently, I had the chance to speak to the Grade 6 classes at Nickel School and answer some great questions from the students and teachers about how the provincial government works.

Our office has been working closely with the Auburn Bay Par-ent Group, who formed to work towards new schools in their community. I recently participated in a meeting for Auburn Bay residents about schools attended by members of the commu-nity and Trustees Bazinet and Williams.

Silverado has also started a Parent Group to work towards schools, and I have attended meetings with them as well. I will continue to work with these two groups for the betterment of our constituents.

Another important group in Calgary-South East is seniors and I make monthly visits to have tea and conversation at the Walden Seniors Residence to speak to the residents about what is important to them.

Finally, I recently completed the Calgary Half Marathon and was able to raise funds for a constituent’s charity, the MEOW Foundation, a cat rescue organization.
