Darracq starting the Double Fifty
F irstly my thanks go to all members who attended the AGM in June. There was
a good turnout and I am please to report that you have some new faces on the
Committee for the next year.
Jan Dearlove is our Secretary, Hugh McInally is the new Editor, Tony Brierley is the
new Club Captain. Stan Richardson is a new Committee member and Paul Fussey
is joining the parts shed committee.
It will be good to have a full team again, and it is always nice to have some new
faces and fresh ideas.
I believe that the feeling of the members is that some innovation is required, fresh
ideas and different outlook on events. But your committee cannot do everything, if
you have an idea for an event or want to try something new just contact any member
on the committee, trust me he will listen. Also at the AGM the plans for the
clubroom extension were circulated. Our next task is to obtain accurate costings to
present back to members. To date no costs have been incurred, but the plans, fire
report, and engineers calculations will need to be paid for soon.
It was a real pleasure to see Robert Johnson receive his 50 year badge at the dinner
after the Double Fifty. Not many Fifty year members are still driving their original
car, which also belonged to the family before Robert joined the Vintage Car Club. It
was also a privilege to have our National President John Comber and his wife
Christine attend the Double Fifty Rally and to present Robert with his Fifty year
badge.
Joe and Lorraine Bruntlett deserve a big pat on the back for organising another
successful Double Fifty Rally. The prize-winning dinner was a great success thanks
to our Social Convenor, Jenny Patton. A lovely dinner and a great venue.
The branch’s programme of events is now out so put it on your fridge, in your office
or somewhere you can see it. Highlight the events you want to attend and mark
them in your diary, then you will have no excuse to forget any event. PTO

At the conclusion of the AGM it was a pleasure to ask Greg Terrill to present the
John L Goddard badge. The badge has been made to present to all past winners of
the trophy. This gives the recipient a permanent memento of this achievement. The
only Waikato member to ever win this award is Jan Dearlove. It was awarded for her
Secretarial role in the 2000 International Rally, of which Greg Terrill was the Rally
Director.
So fellow members lets all look ahead to the future, we have another year ahead of
us, make the most of it. Become involved and support your club.
In closing I would like to thank members for showing faith in me to carry on as
Chairman for another year.
Keep left and keep smiling

Chairman Report Cont’d
At the end of the AGM we were all given a small piece
of paper and asked to write one name on it that you
would like to see awarded the above title.
Not an easy decision in some respect as there are many
in the club that deserve the title for the year. After
deliberations and all slips collected the name was read
out “And the winner is Bob Hayton”. The
announcement was followed by a generous round of
applause
I think it was very appropriate considering the fact that it
was the last night that Bob would be Secretary and not
part of the committee after so many years of excellent
service to the club
Congratulations Bob—a well deserved award.

Secretary
W henever we hear that one of our members has experienced an operation, the rest of us
naturally hope they will soon be back in good health. So to John Bayly and Vicky
Draper, we wish you a quick recovery.
The motorbike group certainly will recall Brian Strangwick who was until recently a regular,
enthusiastic participant on many of our runs. Unfortunately, after being poorly for some
time, Brian sadly passed away recently and will be missed.
For our next Kairangi Hillclimb, Committee have approved an extended course length in an
attempt to meet participants’ expectations and create a better spectacle with improved
viewing possibilities. This will require some additional marshals, so if you are not driving,
please try and make the time available to assist where you can.
The secret is now out, the member presented with a 50 Year badge at the Double Fifty dinner
was Robert Johnson from Matamata. We were privileged to have National President John
Coomber attend to make the presentation and he advised us that he and Christine enjoyed
their weekend rallying in the Waikato and mixing with branch members.
The recent AGM went off well, with a few new members joining the committee and a very
satisfactory financial result reported. At last we have a Club Captain in Tony Brierley,
Venture will now be in the hands of Hugh McInally, with Stan Richardson joining the
General Committee and Jan Dearlove taking up Secretarial duties. Any articles, letters or
adverts you have for inclusion in Venture should be emailed to
[email protected] or as before, mailed to our post box to arrive by the 15 th of
each month.
The clubrooms extension plans have now arrived back from the engineer and members
approved the next step of procuring appropriate construction costs. Once pricing is received,
this will be brought back to a special meeting for the next stage to be determined. Another
option put to members was the possibility that the Judo Club may vacate their clubrooms
leaving us with the chance of taking this over. Some spoke for and some against the idea
and several ideas were discussed for suitable uses for this property, such as a workshop,
spares store or a section den; any more suggestions that you have would be welcomed by
Committee.
Whilst financially things are very sound, members approved the Committee recommendation
of a $1.00 plus gst increase in branch levy on each principal membership, to come into effect
from April next year. This increase will assist with an anticipated need for upgrade of some
of our older kitchen appliances.
Just a couple of entry forms are available right now – Wellsford/Warkworth Branch Winter
Woollies Wander and the Sulphur City event at Rotorua. Call Jan, or email
[email protected] if you would like a copy sent to you.

We hope that you will enjoy the club and it’s many activities
T wice over the last couple of months I have said that the Double 50 rally
was more often than not won by someone who attended our training run,
and so it was this year. Congratulations must go to Bruce Murcott who at
age 92 years of age showed all the younger ones the way home. I would
say that that is a record that will stand for some time because firstly we have to
reach 92...Wow!! The AGM was well attended and it was pleasing to see all
positions filled, so that means that this will be the last report from The Phantom.
We are indebted to Tony for putting his hand up for what is a kingpin position in the
club. The July club event is a run to Raglan for a conducted tour of the new
museum and also a look at the new wharf that was destroyed by fire on April 10th
2010. I understand that the wharf took so long to replace because it was discovered
that the original wharf buildings were built over water, resource consent was a slow
process. As well as our own Ladies rally there are some good away events coming
up including the Wellsford Winter Woolies Wonder and also the Rotorua swap meet
so get out your car and gumboots and shine them both.

DOUBLE 50 WEEKEND
2nd June 2013
Granddad’s 92nd Birthday and the Double 50 Rally were a clash this year but it wasn’t until
we had said yes to both that we realized this.
Our Double 50 started in Australia as Granddad lives in a high rise on the Gold Coast.
After a week of ordinary weather and a final farewell lunch we were heading for the 3pm
train to take us to the Brisbane Airport.
NZL34 was to land at Auckland Airport around midnight then an hour drive home –
hopefully no fog!
Finally to bed around 2pm and up at 7am to prepare my car, mind and body for the 9am
start.
My regular ‘NAVIGUESSA” was too busy with lunch duties so I was to be guided this day
by Georgia Van Den Broek.
We started 26 out of the nearly 80 cars and were soon on our way.
Leaving the Hamilton Classics Museum we left the city via straight line navigation to find
Shirley somewhere out by the Hamilton Zoo.
We were headed North via back roads with very few instructions and relatively easy
questions to answer provided you were still on route.
Lunch was at the Te Kauwhata Rugby Club made difficult to find because of the Rangiriri
road works and a detour in addition to our instructions.
The 50 mile afternoon return journey was very pleasant with some new roads encountered,
even fewer instructions and more questions easily answered provided you were still alert and
on track.
I enjoyed the route and Georgia’s company very much.
The evening function at St Andrews golf course was a pleasant change, the place was full.
Between Joe, Lorraine and Graham the official presentations and prize giving was well
executed and entertaining.
The winners I gather are on page 7. Special congratulations must go to Bruce Murcott &
Trish Forsyth for First place for a Waikato entrant
Present at the function was National President John Comber who presented Robert Johnson
with a 50 year service badge.
Both John’s address and Robert’s acceptance were entertaining and relevant and thought
provoking as to the future.
This years Double 50 can be simply summed up as a very good event.
Thanks to all concerned.

Club Night Event
Wed 10th July This month we have the opportunity to see at first hand how Paintless Dent Removal is performed. Our guest will be Hugh McInally Franchisor for Dent Magician the only nationwide company in NZ and largest Paintless Dent Removal Company both here and in Australia. Paintless Dent Removal is very much a skill and a craft and is recognised as such by the Guild of Master Craftsman in the UK Along with Hugh there will be a couple of his Franchisee’s/Technicians to give you a emonstration of how the system works. No, dents cannot be sucked out as many presume. The system is basically made up of numerous steel rods of various shapes and sizes that allows the Technician to get in behind the panel and with very precise pushes the dent is slowly manipulated until it is completely removed. No need to panel and paint. Big savings—car remains original and only without your car for about an hour rather than days.

JOKE A boy is walking along a road when a car pulls up alongside him. ‘If
you get in my car ,’ says the driver, ‘I’ll give you a bag of sweets’. The
boy ignores him. ‘Okay’, says the driver. ‘Get in my car and you can
have two bags of sweets.’ The boy ignores him. ‘Okay’ says the driv-
er. ‘Get in my car and you can have two bags of sweets and $5.’ The
boy ignores him. ‘The driver says, ‘listen, if you’ll just get in the car
I’ll give you all the sweets you want and $20’. The boy turns to the
driver and says, ‘Dad, for the last time, I’m not getting into your
Skoda’.

As I mentioned in the last months Venture, we would meet at the club-
rooms and have lunch together before going on our run on the 11th
August. Well the place we were going to visit has to be changed because
of a double booking. We are now going to visit Nelson Marshall who has
kindly offered to let us view his collection of Bikes, Rally Cars and as he
said other ITEMS.
As Nelson’s place is in Hamilton and with Bert Munro’s Bike hopefully
still being at the Classic Museum I thought it would be a good idea to
have our lunch there and then visit the Museum ($10.00 for Club Members and name badges
must be worn) then go to Nelson’s place at about 2.00.
So we will meet at the club rooms at 11.00 and then go for a ride on back roads to Hamilton
arriving just before 12.00, this should give us time to do all we need to do, but I would like
your feed back by phone or email on this event, as we have a bit of time to fine tune things
before August.
It is with regret that I have to advise that my very good friend and club member Brian
Strangwick passed away on Tuesday 11th June. Brian always took a great interest in all the
Club’s activities and in particular our bi monthly Bike Runs where he always found some
one to talk to or some thing to talk about. Brian also did a very good article for the Venture
on our visit to the Toyota Car Plant. He was so impressed with what he saw there, that he
took his own group along latter on in the year.
While you are reading this we will have been on our combined run to Te Aroha. As I am
writing this article the weather does not look good for that, but it is winter.
