Introduction

In this project you are required to compare any two types of English language movies:

a) Romantic comedies OR b) animated films

You should first decide on the genre that you would like to attempt for this assignment. Once this is done, you need to look through materials published on this genre to gain a better understanding of what it is all about. Then, start viewing the chosen film genres again to work on the comparison and contrast essay. Please remember to do EITHER a comparison of similarities OR a contrast of differences only. Do not

1

attempt to do both. It is crucial that your essay involves the discussion of the genre that you have chosen in the introduction.

Please ensure that your essay follows the extended college essay as taught in English 1. For Compare/Contrast essay, you are required to use the right development method, i.e. 'One side at a time'/Point by point'. If you are unsure, refer to the chapter on Compare Contrast essays from 'College Writing Skills' by John Langan. This book is available in the Taylor’s University library. Additionally, I will present you the same format and upload it for your own perusal.

Intro: We all know that Lilo & Stitch (2002) and Tarzan (1999) are animated movies. These

animated movies are not just an ordinary cartoon movie but an appropriate “love” and “family”

animated movies. The movies made me felt like there’s always somebody there for me when I

5

Page 6: July 2013 class assignment 2 brief - revised

need them yet I still have to learn to love my own accompany because even my own shadow will

leave me in darkness.

1st Para: The story shows about non biological related human, animals and aliens become

family but both of the stories are totally different on how they show their love each other. Stitch

starring by the voice of Christopher Michael Sanders escapes and heads for Earth. adopted by

little Lilo starring by the voice of Daveigh Chase, whom, bent on self-preservation, he plans to

use as a human shield to protect him for the aliens sent to recapture him. Stitch does a little soul

searching and begins to understand the meanings of "love" and "family" and his feeling for Lilo

begin to change.

2nd Para: The opposite of the movie which is “Tarzan” is about Tarzan’s life. Tarzan starring by

the voice of Tony Goldwyn was a small orphan who was raised by an ape. He believed that this

was his family then he finds out that he's human. He was given a choice to live with the apes or

humans where he belongs to.

3rd Para: Moreover, both of the movies have different personality for the main character. Stitch

is depicted as a character that is unlikable to many people except Lilo. Stitch is seen as an

adorable, loving "pet" of Lilo's. He does whatever he can to protect his loved ones. Lilo is

dependent on Stitch for protection and support; if anything, it is Stitch who is more dependent on

Lilo. Lilo makes every effort to help Stitch in life and, as the story progresses; he becomes more

self-conscious and capable of making the right decisions thanks to his friend. Lastly, Stitch has

friends, family, loved ones and a purpose worth believing in.

6

4th Para: Whereas, Tarzan is chartered as extremely brave, loyal and honorable. He cares deeply

about his family and friends and was willing to risk his life to save them. Tarzan was playful and

fun loving, but also felt like an outcast due to the fact that he was human. Until Jane Porter, her

father and Clayton arrived he had never seen another human before and was therefore unaware

of what species he was. Having lived in the jungle his whole life, Tarzan developed exceptional

abilities that would be impossible for other humans.

Closing Para: In conclusion, both of the movies showed their love for their non-biological

family but they have different stories about it. Most importantly, the movies taught me to

appreciate my family and friend. Not to be forgotten that I learnt to be independent because you

can’t depend on somebody for the rest of your life.

We all know that Lilo & Stitch (2002) and Tarzan (1999) are animated movies. Both of the

animated movies had made an excellent rating to the viewers since the early years. These

animated movies are not just an ordinary cartoon movie but an appropriate “love” and “family”

animated movies. This is probable the main reason why the movies have such a high rating to the

7

Page 8: July 2013 class assignment 2 brief - revised

viewers. The movies didn’t just provide important massages to the young ones; it will also open

up their heart and mind about the world to lead them to a positive lifestyle because that is how I

felt when I watched the movies. The movies also made me felt like there’s always somebody

there for me when I need them yet I still have to learn to love my own accompany because even

my own shadow will leave me in darkness.

The story shows about non biological related human, animals and aliens become family but

both of the stories are totally different on how they show their love each other. In “Lilo and

Stitch”, the plot was about the story of a little creature created by genetic experimentation and

bound to prison with his evil creator. Stitch starring by the voice of Christopher Michael Sanders

escapes and heads for Earth where he tries to impersonate a dog and gets adopted by little Lilo

starring by the voice of Daveigh Chase, whom, bent on self-preservation, he plans to use as a

human shield to protect him for the aliens sent to recapture him. But without a greater purpose in

life, no friends, family or memories, Stitch does a little soul searching and begins to understand

the meanings of "love" and "family" and his feeling for Lilo begin to change. This movie is

really funny and touching. It made me cried several times even I have watch it like 10 times.

Family is the most blessed thing I have in life.

The opposite of the movie which is “Tarzan” is about Tarzan’s life. Tarzan starring by the

voice of Tony Goldwyn was a small orphan who was raised by an ape named Kala starring by

the voice of Glenn Close since he was a child. He believed that this was his family, but on an

expedition Jane Porter starring by the voice of Minnie Driver is rescued by Tarzan. He then finds

out that he's human. Now Tarzan must make the decision as to which family he should belong to.

8

Page 9: July 2013 class assignment 2 brief - revised

Moreover, both of the movies have different personality for the main character. Stitch is

depicted as a character that is unlikable to many people except Lilo. Beneath his "monster"-like

exterior, Stitch is often emotionally fickle. In his 'bad' persona, Stitch is destructive and seen as a

threat; however, in his 'good' persona, Stitch is seen as an adorable, loving "pet" of Lilo's. He

does whatever he can to protect his loved ones. However, he is shown to be quite childish at

times. A perfect example is during Lilo and Stitch 2: Stitch has a Glitch, during a fight with Lilo,

both of them acting humorously childish, such as him whining and shouting, "She's touching

me!" when Lilo pretends to poke him, and they are fighting about who goes downstairs first.

There is a common misconception from viewers that Lilo is dependent on Stitch for protection

and support; if anything, it is Stitch who is more dependent on Lilo. Despite her having her own

troubles to contend with, Lilo makes every effort to help Stitch in life and, as the story

progresses, he becomes more self-conscious and capable of making the right decisions thanks to

his friend. At the end of the series, Stitch has friends, family, loved ones and a purpose worth

believing in.

Whereas, Tarzan is chartered as extremely brave, loyal and honorable. He cares deeply about

his family and friends and was willing to risk his life to save them. He has also been known to be

willing to rescue his enemies; an example of this was when Clayton by the voice of Banjō

Ginga (Japanese) was about to fall to his death and Tarzan exclaimed "Clayton! Clayton, don't!"

and reached out to save him, even though Clayton had fatally wounded Kerchak by the voice of

Lance Henriksen and attempted to kidnap his whole gorilla family. In his youth, Tarzan was

playful and fun loving, but also felt like an outcast due to the fact that he was human. Until Jane

Porter, her father and Clayton arrived he had never seen another human before and was therefore

unaware of what species he was. And as an adult, he had matured into a more serious character 9

Page 10: July 2013 class assignment 2 brief - revised

but still displayed a playful and friendly side when around his family and friends. Having lived

in the jungle his whole life, Tarzan developed exceptional abilities that would be impossible for

other humans. He was able to swing through the trees, hold things with his feet and had a good

sense of hearing and smell. He frequently moved like a gorilla, walking on his knuckles but

would walk upright at times too. He is also incredibly strong being able to pin down Kerchak and

lift at least two fully grown humans at the same time without any apparent effort.

In conclusion, both of the movies showed their love for their non-biological family but they

have different stories about it. Most importantly, the movies taught me to appreciate my family

and friend. Not to be forgotten that I learnt to be independent because you can’t depend on

somebody for the rest of your life. Until now, I don’t left the people I care alone because the

words “Ohana means family, family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten” from the movie

of Lilo and stitch is always in my mind. I was glad that I watched these movies. In a brief, both

of ‘Lilo & Stitch’ and ‘Tarzan’ had a lot of differences including difference in plot and

characters.
