The monsoon season, along with bringing high winds and rain, also brings illnesses, and I for one will certainly be glad to get a bit on sun on my body to take away the cold thats been near on impossible to shake off for the last couple of weeks, and from what Ive seen Im not the only one.

Luckily, during this time, for those that that arent living and working here, there are still plenty of activities to keep you busy, and out of the rain. I understand that the main reason the majority of visitors come here is for the beaches, however, if you do get some days when sunning yourself is out of the question, just Google what to do when its raining in Phuket, and youll be given access to a large number of websites which can provide you with all the information you need for the best things to do when the beach is a washout.

TIN MINING MONUMENTShaped like a large drill bit, the monument was built in 1969

to mark the 60th anniversary ofPhukets tin dredging. It is

dedicated to the memory of Captain Edward Thomas Miles,

the Australian who brought the first tin dredge to Phuket in

1907. The monument is located at Sapan Hin Public Park, a

popular destination for locals to relax after work. Here there

is also a sport center which occasionally holds events.

Have you ever heard someone say Phuket has changed a lot in recent years? The tourist boom and fast development has certainly turned Phuket into the busy city it is today. Lets see how Phuket looked in the past compared to today.

PHUKETS LOOKS: THE PAST & PRESENT

PHANG NGA ROADPhang Nga Road was the center of the commercial district

back in the prosperous tin mining era. The photo is taken

where Phang Nga Road meets Phuket Road. You are able

to see a lot of the Sino-Portuguese architecture buildings

that still remain a hundred years later. The building which

is located on the corner with the clock tower was the old

Standard Charter Bank in the past and is now the Promth-

ep News Centre. Old Photo credit: Sangchan Limlo-hakul

SAEN SUK BEACHPhukets tin mining during the 19th Century attracted

thousands of Chinese laborers and westerners settlers.

It was not only the mainstay of the islands revenue

before the tourism era but also enhanced the technology,

politics, education, foreign affairs and employment,

as well as created Phukets unique culture called the

Peranakan. In this photo is a present shot of Saen

Suk Beach, in Phuket Town compared to the old photo

THE OLD PHUKET POST OFFICE This building was the former governors house before it

become the first Phuket post office during 1930-1963 A.D.

Since a new bigger post office was built, this old building

has been used as philatelic museum, one of eight through-

out the country. Phuket Philatelic Museum is on Montri

Road and is open for visitors 08:30-16:30 Monday - Friday,

09:00-12:00 Saturday and Public Holidays, and closed on

Sundays. Old Photo credit: Sangchan Limlo-hakul

SURIN CIRCLE CLOCK TOWER The Old Clock Tower was originally built in the 1950s and

featured pre-modern Thai architecture; the Clock Tower

had a slender shape and perforated structure, and had

a design that attempted to replicate the shape of the

Toa Sae Hill located behind it. In 2003 it was knocked

down and replaced with a Sino-Portuguese Tower. In

the old photo, behind the old clock tower is the Reungjit

Cinema which closed down in 2001. Old Photo: Sangchan

EKWANICH BUILDINGThe Ekwanich Building is located on Dibuk Road, at the

corner opposite Lok Tian Local Food Center in the old

town area. The buildings architecture was influenced

from Chinese, European Neo-Classical and Renaissance

styles. Its front colonnaded walkway is a good example of

the unique architectural style used in the old town during

the second phase (1900 - 1932). The idea of this covered

arcade was suggested by Phraya Ratsadanupradit, the

    past Commissioner of Monthon

    EXPO MARKETShopping like locals

In addition to Phukets Weekend Market, very well-known among tourists, Phuket has another destination for those who would like to experience the local shopping lifestyle. At the Expo Market, you

can walk around 6-7 rows of stalls and shop for cheap clothes, shoes,

    accessories as well as souvenirs.

Expo Market is an indoor market under one big roof. It is located

just at the intersection of Tilok U-Thit 2 Road and Chanajareon Road,

within a few minutes walk or driving from Robinson Ocean Phuket

    Department Store and Fresh Market.

It is a good option for tourist who might miss a chance to be in

Phuket on weekend as its open every day, and is ideal to include in

your one day in-town itinerary after strolling around the old town.

You can spend about 1-2 hours here and move on to the fresh mar-

ket for a local style dinner. If you do happen to get hungry while

shopping, you can either walk inside a small cafeteria selling refresh-

ments and food, or walk outside to the restaurants located nearby.

Shops start to open late in the morning and close about 9 pm. A

large section is clothes and accessories for women. A pair of slippers

can cost only 99 or 120 Baht whilst the price of a dress can start at

    350 Baht. Enjoy shopping!

    Free Trade Area OF THAILAND-AUSTRALIA

A Free Trade Area is an economic integration between two or more countries to establish liberalised

trade in goods and services and to create

    favourable conditions for the stimulation

of trade and investment flows. Mem-

bers of a free-trade area do not have a

    common external tariff, which means

they have different quotas and customs,

as well as other policies with respect to

    non-members.

Thailand and Australia entered into the

    Thailand-Australia Free Trade Agreement

    (TAFTA) which consequently came into

effect on 1st January 2005. Subsequently,

    Thailand and Australia completed the

    elimination of significant tariffs between

each other, however all tariffs were not

    immediately eliminated. Instead, those

that still remained were phased down our

out, with 95 per cent of all trade between

    Australia and Thailand completely tariff

    free by 2010.

Besides the elimination of tariffs, TAFTA

    also supports Australian investors

    conducting business in Thailand. For

    instance, the agreement permits major-

ity Australian ownership for businesses in

    certain sectors including mining operations,

    construction services, restaurants and

    hotels, tertiary education institutions,

maritime cargo services, and more. It

also facilitates businesses by easing visas

and other requirements for the temporary

entry of Australian business people to

    Thailand, including through reduced pa-

perwork, access to a one-stop visa and work

permit service, and extension of the maxi-

mum length of stay under business visa

    arrangements.

By virtue of TAFTA, in order for Australian investors to be eligible for the privileges attached to a Business Operations Certificate in

accordance with Section 10 of the Foreign Business Act, there are the certain criteria that must be met in order to have the right

to request a Business Operations Certificate as follows:

    (1) Being a juristic entity incorporated

under Thai law in the form of an Ordi-

    nary Partnership, Limited Partnership or

    Limited Company.

    (2) In the case of a Limited Company, the Authorised Directors who can sign on behalf of and bind the company must be Australians or Thais. As for an Ordinary

    Partnership or Limited Partnership, its

manager or managing partner must be

    Thai.

    (3) In the case of a Limited Company, its shareholders must be:

    1. Australians or a mixture of Austral-

    ians and Thais; or

    2. Juristic entities incorporated under

Australian law, a majority of whose

    shareholders are Australians. This

proportion of shareholding must be in

compliance with the conditions of type

    of businesses under TAFTA.

    (4) The applicant must have its debt-to-

    equity ratio not exceeding 3:1.

The history of civil airlines in Thailand was tightly regulated by government control, but the mid-1990s saw a relaxation

of air operator regulations. Apart from a few

small private companies who took advantage

of the opportunities offered by the Vietnam

conflict in the 1960s, Thai Airways and then

    Thai Airways International (following their

merger in 1988) reigned largely unopposed.

Bangkok Airways (previously Sahakol Air) was

the sole survivor from the Vietnam days. Air

Siam provided some interest and competition

during most of the 1970s, but was finally

crushed in 1977. Readers may also recall the

flying boat services of Tropical Sea Air for a

couple of years in the early 1990s. But from

    the mid-1990sthe floodgates opened, with

the arrival of Orient Thai, PB Air, Angel

Airlines, Air Andaman, and Phuket Air.

The History of PHUKET AIRThe History of PHUKET AIR

Often described as a hobby airline, Phuket Air was formed in January 2001 under the management of

Vikrom Aisiri, a local Senator and the owner of the Andaman Club and other hotels and resorts in the region.

Despite the name, Phuket Airinitially chose Ranongas their base, largely because the Andaman Clubs main

gambling resort on Son Island was accessible to Thai gamblers from that Thai coastal town. At the time the city

had no scheduled air connection so Phuket Airs daily service, which was launched in December 2001 using a

single 99-seat Boeing 737 to connect Ranong with Bangkok and Phuket, were essential to transport wealthy

    gamblers to the tables.

This article was kindly written by Steve Darke for the in-Phuket magazine. Steve Darke is a 59-year-old British aircraft aficionado who, between 1993 and 1997, has spent four years in Thailand in the construc-tion business. He is also the man behind the Thai Aviation History website www.thai-aviation.net, the most comprehensive online project on this subject. He also has a book shortly to be published, written in collaboration with Dr. Virachai Vannukul (once CEO of Air Siam), covering the development of civil aviation in Thailand since WW2.

    09in Phuket, July 2013 Lifestyle

    The Boeing 737, named Similan

    and wearing an eye-catching

    tropical colour scheme, arrived at

    Phuketin early December 2001, before

moving on to Bangkok the next day to

ensure an auspicious arrival there on

the 74th birthday of the Thai King,

    Bhumibhol Adulyadej. Phuket Air

    received two more Boeings 737during

2002, allowing the start of services

from Phuket to Krabi, and Bangkok to

    UdonThani, Chittagong and Manda-

lay. Phuket Airs attempts to expand

their regional routes in 2004 were

    unfortunately timed, because of the

emergence of true low cost carriers

such as One-Two-Go and Thai Air Asia.

To serve domestic routes Phuket Air,

from 2003, acquired a fleet of five

    NAMC YS-11As twin-props which had

    been withdrawn after many years

of service with the Japanese airline

    All Nippon. These aircraft allowed

services to be operated to Chiang

Mai, Chiang Rai, Phuket, Hat Yai,

    Buriram and Mae Sot.

    In a wider international setting,

as early as the beginning of 2003

Phuket Air announced plans to start

    long-haul services to Europe, and

acquired a fleet of old Boeing 747s

from late 2003. A service three times

a week from Bangkok to London

Gatwick began on 1st July 2004,

    followed by Amsterdam in March

    2005. The events which followed

    entered the headlines in April

2005, andare well known to those

    unfortunates who planned to travel

    to Europe with Phuket Air.

From the beginning of the service

    in 2004, passengers had reported

the generally poor condition of the

    aircraft, based on seemingly minor

    problems with seats, toilet facilities

etc, but the issue came to a head

in April 2005 when passengers on

a Boeing 747 en route to London

    Gatwick reported an apparent fuel

spill seen whilst departing from the

    intermediate stop at Sharjah UAE,

and caused the take-off to be aborted.

This was followed three days later

by the return of another Boeing

747 to Gatwick following an engine

    problem shortly after departure, and

    its subsequent impounding, until

    February 2006, for non-payment of

airport fees. A further three days later

yet another Boeing 747 had hydraulic

    problems at Bangkok before departing

    for Amsterdam. These problems caused

the Thai Department of Civil Aviation

to immediately ground all of Phuket

Airs fleet whilst safety inspections were

    carried out, with some domestic

services resuming on 13th April 2005.

    The two European routes however

    never recovered. The Dutch authorities

suspended the airlines license at the

end of April on safety grounds following

the discovery of a pilot without a valid

    medical certificate, whilst the French

authorities added Phuket Air to the list

of airlines banned from French airspace

in June 2005.The airlines image also

    suffered yet another blow when

they were added to the European

Commissions list of airlines banned from

entering EU countries in March 2006,

although a year later they succeeded in

becoming one of the first airlines to be

removed from the banned list, largely

based on their assertion that they had no

plans to operate in European airspace.

The safety concerns also resulted in the

fleet of five YS-11s, and two of the three

    Boeing 737s, being withdrawn from

service by the end of 2005, the airline

operating only the Bangkok to Ranong

route by early 2006, and Bangkok to

    Yangon through the 2005/06 high

    season. Both were withdrawn before

summer 2006. Visitors to Don Mueang

airport today can see the fleet of

YS-11 aircraft still parked in store.

Of the eight-strong Boeing 747 fleet,

only two or three remained operational

by the end of 2005, the others are in

    various decrepit states at Bangkok

DonMueang or Jakarta. Two of the

    operational aircraft operated Hadj

flights on behalf of Saudi Arabian

Airlines during the winter periods, and

    later operated some non-European

    services for Saudi Arabian Airlines.

Phuket Airs safety record was not

helped by the loss of an engine on

take-off from Cairo in July 2010,

resulting in the airline acquiring three

newer Boeing 747-400s for the Saudi

    Arabian services.

However, by early 2012 all of the

Boeing 747s were out of service,

leaving Phuket Air with no active fleet.

Although Phuket Air no longer operate,

they did their part in helping to put

Phuket firmly on the map and now

    Phuket International Airport, which

    is currently under much needed

    expansion, welcomes carriers from

across the globe keen to capitalize by

    offering holidaymakers direct flights to

    this wonderful destination.

APPS TO HELP YOU FIND YOUR LOST SMART PHONE

Luckily, we have smart phones and applications that make it really smart when we lose it. There are several applications that have been developed to help you find your lost phones. Here below are the recommended apps and instructions for

    both iOS and android users.

IPHONE USERSFor iOS users, you need an application called Find My iPhone. This is a custom iPhone locator app, built into iOS, Apples mobile operating system. The application requires iOS 5 or later (iOS 6 is required for Lost Mode), or OS X v10.7.5 or later.

Its important that you set up each device with the same iCloud account information so you can see all your devices when you sign in to iCloud from any computer or web-enabled device. Then the approximate location of your phone will be displayed on a map.

After installation of the app, you have to correctly enable Find My iPhone. Tap iCloud in Settings, if youre asked to sign in, enter your Apple ID, or if you dont have one, tap Get a Free Apple ID, then follow the instructions that appear. Then, turn on and confirm to use Find My iPhone.

You can add security by setting up a pass code that needs to be entered before anyone can access the apps and information on your device (Settings > General > Passcode Lock). You can also turn on Restrictions to prevent anyone else from turning off Find My iPhone (Settings > General > Restrictions).

Now you can use Find My iPhone at icloud.com/find using your Apple/iCloud ID to find the approximate location of your iPhone. Please note that you can find your phones current location as long as it is online, not asleep, and within range of a Wi-Fi network.

If your phone is online its approximate location will be shown on a map. The app allows you to remotely lock your iPhone, play a sound or wipe out all data on it to secure your confidential information. When your phones offline. If the app cant locate your iPhone, the last known location is displayed for up to 24 hours before the map is cleared. What you can do next is to select the Notify Me When Found checkbox to receive an email when your iPhone comes back online with a location.

For the coming iOS 7, Apple has added more security to iPhones by asking your Apple ID every time you want to make change to Find My iPhone setting.

ANDROID USERFor Android Users, there are a few free applications recommended on Google Play.

WINDOWS PHONE USERFor Windows Phone users, Microsoft offers a free phone location service with its Windows Phone 7 operating system called Find My Phone. The application is activated through the phones Settings page. When youve lost your phone, Find My Phone features are accessed through windowsphone.com. Look for the My Phone drop-down menu, then sign in with the same Windows Live ID you use on your phone. Then, in the My Phone menu, click Find My Phone. Now you can see the location of your missing phone, make it ring, remotely lock it, or erase data.

However, besides using the application you should also go to see the police to report the loss and ask police for the report, and advise that your phones IMEI is needed. Then, bring the document to the Legal Affairs Department of any carrier and ask them to check and notify you if there has been any communication made through your phone. They will know when your phone becomes active again. You can now bring the document from the carrier to the police to get your phone back.

Lookout Security & Antivirus This is an application by Lookout Mobile Security. Basic features include security protection, information back up and find your lost phone services. Its free basic functionality includes security, contacts backup and missing device that allows you to find your phone on a Google Map from Lookout.com (while its online), sound a loud alarm to find it even if its on silent, check your phones last known location.

However, there are some key features that Lookout only makes available in its premium upgrade, which costs $2.99 per month or $29.99 for a one-year license. The privacy adviser, photo and call backup, data transfer to a new phone, remote lock, wipe all data and premium support are all restricted to the premium upgrade.

After successfully installing the application, you need to set up and register your phone to enable the services. Upon opening for the first time, the app will automatically scan virus for you. Then, to set up the Missing Device function, you have to go to Missing Device, click Enable Better Protection, select Enable Better Protection and click Activate. If youve set it up correctly, the Enable Better Protection button will disappear.

You can now log in with the username and password you set up at www.lookout.com to manage your phone.

Android LostThis application is developed by Theis Borg. After installation, you can now go to www.androidlost.com and log in with your Google account to activate and get access to its control panel. This application allows you to activate the alarm to ring with a flashing screen, enable and disable the GPS, data and Wi-Fi connection, remote wipe the SD card, and get your phones latest call list. This free app also lets you take photos from your phone camera (front and rear) as well as make your phone speak using text-to-speech. Once the SIM card is changed, you will be notified via email. As the apps feature is remotely installed and is hidden from the launcher to prevent uninstallation, it can be used even after you have lost your phone.
