    The Starling Invasion

Many garden bird watchers loathe starlings, mainlybecause of the way they descend on food in largenumbers and eat everything within a few minutes.

It is easy to see this behaviour as greed and a concernedbird feeder on a limited budget can be driven to despair.(I have toyed with the idea of a flame thrower!)

However, starlings are in decline; surveys suggest thatthe survival rate of young birds is responsible. (Cancelthat flame thrower!)

The large volume of starlings we see during the wintermonths are not local birds; their numbers aresupplemented by millions from Eastern Europe, wherewinters get too hard for them to remain. They arrivehere during late September, returning late March, earlyApril.

Over the last few weeks our garden has become aplayground for starling chicks - they drop in from the skylike harrier jets. Watching their parents feed them is asight to see.

They are like miniature penguins, following their mumsand dads around with open beaks. Has anyone elsenoticed that starlings, when feeding, are alwaysfollowed around by sparrows? Im not sure if theyconsider starlings as body guards or food testers?

Despite the bad reputation, starlings are greatentertainment. On closer viewing they are extremelycolourful birds and full of character.

Best of all is the daily communal bath time. How can 26young starlings dunk and dive at the same time intosomething the size of teapot?

Most of you will still consider starlings as a gluttonousgarden pest. I am reminded of this most mornings whenmy neighbour can be heard shouting Bleedin Starlings!

Restaurant ReviewThe Eagle Tavern at Little Coxwell

    www.eagletavern.co.uk Tel: 01367 241879

Every once in a while you discover something pleasing, something special that you wantto keep to yourself. We recently found such a place: The Eagle Tavern in Little Coxwell.

Wed booked our evening meal in advance, but we arrived with no real expectations. Onentering, we immediately noticed the relaxed ambience of the place, despite it beingfairly busy, with people having dinner or just popping in for a drink. We were reallyimpressed by the Bar Menu, which had a wide choice of grills, cold boards, nibbles, specials and mouthwatering desserts, as well as a good kids menu. The restaurant istucked away at the rear of the pub and its very intimate. Again, the atmosphere anddcor was totally relaxing. You can see that the new management have put in a lot ofhard work to achieve this.

We chose a bottle of Australian Shiraz from the extensive wine list while weperused the La Carte menu. I went for grilled mackerel for starters, followed byspring lamb three ways. My good lady opted for parfait, followed by poachedsalmon. The presentation was excellent and the taste was fantastic - why have wenot been here before? Honestly, we have visited most of the local eatingestablishments in Oxfordshire and this is right up there with the best. I couldntmanage a dessert after totally gorging myself, but dipped in to the good ladysbanana flamb and wished I had!

The Eagle Tavern source both free range meat and fresh vegetables locally, andtheir fish arrives direct from Brixham Fish Market. The La Carte menu is a setprice for one, two or three courses from 12.95 - 22.50.If you fancy a daytime treat, lunches are served daily (except Mondays), includingSundays.

When looking for superb food in great surroundings this is it - quite simply, modern European cuisine at an affordable price.

Festival Fizz!Frizzante is an Italian termfor semi or lightlysparkling wines, where truesparkling wines are referredto as spumante. They can beproduced via a couple ofmethods: one being by directcarbonation; anotherthrough partial secondary

fermentation in a tank, then bottled under pressure inorder to preserve the bubble. (The bubbles being thecarbon dioxide by-product from the fermentationprocess).

Here are a couple that will add a bit of sparkle for festivalgoers and the relatively lower alcohol levels see themconducive to the daytime hours.

Il Casone Glera Frizzante IGT NVVeneto, Italy

Produced from the white Italian grape variety glera, which until 2009 was referred to as Prosecco. It is fromthe same area of prosecco production, which may havehad a hand in this confusion. (Prosecco is produced fromthe grapes of the same name.)

Lightly sparkling with youthful aromas of white blossomalongside peaches and melon. The palate is refreshing, with flavours of crisp green apples with subtle melon andpeach.

Sacchetto Pinot Rosa Frizzante IGT NVVeneto, Italy

This fizz is produced from the grapevarieties pinot nero (pinot noir) and pinotbianco. Coloured light salmon pink, it hasvery subtle aromas of strawberries andredcurrants on the nose.

The palate delivers a refreshing burst ofsummer fruits; strawberries with redcherries as well as some white pepper onthe finish. It is balanced, providing a crisp, clean finish. A great one to drink on itsown!

Both wines available from The Portwell AngelSpecial Festival Frizzante Prices!
