From The PodiumExalted Ruler Joan VanOsten
Hello fellow Elks,I hope all of you are enjoying the longer days that
we've been having. First, let me remind you thatwe doI not have a meeting on July 1 Our July board meeting
has been moved to July 13th and our next regularlyscheduled meeting will be July 15th.I'd like to take this opportunity to thank you for letting
me represent our lodge at the national convention inOrlando, Fl.. I will be leaving on July 1 and returning onJuly 8. I will represent our lodge to the best of my ability, keeping in mind that it's not my lodge but our lodge. In addition to the meeting changes listed above, please
mark the following on your colander. On August 14th wewill have the pancake breakfast for the Danville CancerAssociation. You should have received your tickets forsale or purchase. On August 29th we will travel to theSalemVA Hospital to serve lunch to the patients.Looking back on June it was a very busy month..
Members attending the spring state convention in.Charlottesville enjoyed it immensely. The little leaguebaseball team that the Elks sponsor won the city widechampionship. We had a cookout for them on June 13and.the adults in attendance had as much fun as theplayers. On June 24 we had our BBQ chicken dinner. Iwould like to thank Lane Hudson, Brian Travis, WalterHodges, Willie Worley and all others who helped make .the event a success. We'd also like to thank Mr. Milamfor letting us borrow the cooker. For the first time I"painted"chicken. It was fun.I know that many of you are on vacation and I wish you
safe travels and a relaxing time. .Fraternally

Charlottesville Summer Convention 2010
Message from the Grand Exalted Rulerr do not claim to know all there is to know
about attracting new Members and holding ontothem. However, r offer Some thoughts on thesubject.
In my book, membership boils down to whatwe do, how well we do it, and how what we do isperceived in the community. An active Lodge, working relevant projects, will draw interest. Wethen need to be geared to ask, "Are you an Elk?Would you like to be?"
We are all busy people. We spend much timeworking and child-rearing. We seem to have little time to do volunteerservice activities. Yet, with all of that, there are some folks who wouldwant to participate in a family-oriented Elks Lodge that has a Hoop ShootFree-Throw Contest, a Drug Awareness Pool Party, a Veterans' Picnic, theAntlers, and so on. Why can't we find these people?
r am firmly convinced they are right there in front of us and (just)need to be asked. The problem is, some of us are older and do not haveassociation with younger people. Some of us are burnt out and do notbother, even when a likely prospect is known to us. And some of us aresocial people and not Lodge people. So, what do we do?
The people who do all the work and are too busy to brainstormmembership must step back and realize, if we do not do this membershipthing, we will soon not have a Lodge. I suggest the Exalted Ruler enlist thePast Exalted Rulers Association to form and man aMembershiplRetentioniReinstatement Project. Make it the highest priorityof the Lodge. Call it a Membership Drive.
However, do not neglect to integrate all new Members into the life ofthe Lodge. A new Member is fine, but we must actively work to keep thatMember.
Organizations that grow are organizations that strike a responsivechord in the community. J believe our Order and your Lodge have lots ofwonderful programs and are poised to do just that. Work your programswith enthusiasm. Tell your story. Membership will follow, so long as anElk steps up and says, "Would you like to be an Elk?"
Sincerely and Fraternally,James L. Nichelson, Grand Exalted Ruler
