Success is defined relative to individual goals, and its appearance varies with each of our unique points of view. Regardless of your vantage point, you will find essential resources and insight at this year’s AIA Florida Convention

to help create success within your career, your practice and your community. So please join us this summer at the Trump National Doral Miami Resort where you will be engaged in dialogue and discovery of the most significant issues shaping our collective future.

Centered on the theme of ‘Creating Community’ this year’s convention committee, chaired by Kim Headland, AIA and AIA Florida Vice President Joe Garcia, AIA, has assembled a unique set of programs exploring the connections between design and community health, economic growth, service leadership, career development, crime mitigation, and much more. Exploring the role of our profession relative to these issues is essential, as the value of design thinking continues to take a more prominent role in the public consciousness.

Our kickoff speaker, AIA National President-Elect, Elizabeth Chu Richter, FAIA, brings a unique perspective on the place of our profession in a changing world. Also joining us, Steve Dumez, FAIA of Eskew+Dumez+Ripple will join us to share how their New Orleans-based firm developed a community-focused culture that earned them recognition as the 2014 AIA National Firm of the Year and Ellen Dunham-Jones, AIA, co-author of Retrofitting Suburbia; Urban Design Solutions for Redesigning Suburbs, will be on hand to present timely insight into the creation of community assets that promote healthy and sustainable living through architecture. We will also showcase the award-winning film “If You Build It,” documenting one of America’s most innovative classrooms, where high school students collaborate to transform their community. Programs that engage young professionals and promote the path to licensure will be featured, while project tours and a fantastic opportunity to visit AIA Miami’s new Miami Center for Architecture and Design will round out the offerings.

With its vibrant cultural heritage, Miami is a natural location for Florida’s architects to assemble for fellowship and collaborative dialogue. Everyone has a role in shaping a successful future, and the knowledge we share today determines the course of our profession for the next generation of service leadership to carry forward. Because you desire to grow your career and position your practice to meet the challenges of the future, I know we will see you this summer at the 2014 AIA Florida Convention!

Sponsored by Florida natural Gas Association

When you attend FNGA’s CEU course on Thursday morning July 17 at 11:00 am, our Energy Expert will give you a reference card to work from. The card may also be picked up at the registration desk. All you have to do is sketch a creative use of natural gas in a structure on the fly. You’ll have a full day to com-plete your sketch.

You can use a napkin, a paper or your laptop. Bring it to us at the beginning of the Tradeshow Friday afternoon and we will select the winner during the last half hour of the event. (Then hang around for the Gas Grill Drawing…and the Cre-ative Energy Contest Winner.) We’ll trump this convention and make it better than ever.
