The Poor Box in the
lobby areas of Holy Name of Mary Church,
and at Good Shepherd Chapel, is a very
special Box. It supplies the resources the
Parish needs to continue to assist the needy
in our Parish. Food and grocery cards are
distributed monthly to those few local
people who need a bit of help. Our Pastor,
who sometimes, will have the means to
assist if the Fund is available.
Have an extra dollar? Feed the Hungry….
CATHOLIC SCHOOL CORNER: The seeds of a Catholic
education are planted by both our parish communities and our
families. By establishing strong academic and spiritual roots,
Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of New York are putting
students on a path that allows them to grow in faith and
knowledge as they achieve their full potential. As the school
year comes to a close, we would like to thank you for your
support of Catholic education in our region. Our schools are
vibrant, safe, nurturing dwellings. Seats are still available in
most grades. Our schools are on summer schedule but we are
available to meet with you to discuss enrollment. Please call
646-794-2885 to schedule a tour or appointment or visit
www.ApplyCatholicSchoolsNY.org to apply today. Thank you
and have a restful and blessed summer.

Readings for This Week 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time
First Reading: Isaiah 55:10-11
Second Reading: Romans 8:18-23
Gospel: Matthew 13:1-23
Next Weeks Readings SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
First Reading: Wisdom 12:13, 16-19
This passage from the Book of Wisdom addresses itself to God, giving praise and thanksgiving for his mercy.
Second Reading: Romans 8:26-27
Paul indicates that since people are, in general, unaccustomed to the manner of praying, of speaking directly to God, the
Holy Spirit will intercede for them.
Gospel: Matthew 13:24-43
According to Matthew, Jesus speaks of the “reign of God” in three parables: the man who soweth good seed, the
mustard seed, and the yeast. In each parable, Jesus demonstrates that once the “reign of God” had been established, it
grew and spread.

How Catechesis of the Good Shepherd transforms religious formation
Two summers ago, four families came into our parish with
school age children who weren’t baptized and hadn’t received
any formal exposure to our faith. This was a perfect
opportunity to use the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd
religious formation program.
The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS), a style of
instructing children ages 3-12 in the truths of the Catholic faith,
seeks to create an engaging and hands on environment in
which each child can explore and respond to the faith
individually, in a way they can understand.Pictured right is a
guide (also known as a catechist) and one of the children
exploring the elements of the altar and the consecration.
CGS differs
from traditional religious education in that it
perceives the child not as a “blank slate” ready to
be instructed about God, but rather as a person
who already has a relationship with God, and
who needs language and a space to grow deeper
in this relationship. The goal of CGS is to help
each child discover how they best connect with
God. The adult serves as a co-listener and co-
learner with the child, moving out of the role of a
teacher into functioning in a role similar to that of
a spiritual director. The program is individually focused because it’s hard to give a gift to a whole
group, but it’s very possible to give a gift to an individual.
Much of the catechetical style revolves around asking questions that tap into a child’s sense of
wonder. For example, when exploring the story of the Annunciation with a child, a catechist might
ask the child questions such as, “How do you think Mary felt when an angel showed up in her
room?” In addition, the catechist will use three-dimensional models and figures to illustrate the story
and allow the child to interact with it more tangibly. Pictured above is the material to give the
presentation on the Last Supper. The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd first came about in 1954
through the work of two Roman Catholic laywomen in Rome, Sofia Cavalletti and Gianna Gobbi. The
materials they prepared for children were based on the Bible, the Roman Catholic liturgy and
sacraments, tradition and Church teachings. Recently, multiple religious orders have incorporated
the program into their formation programs, such as the Missionaries of Charity, Mother Teresa’s
sisters.
Mark Your Calendars!!!! Mark your calendars! Holy Name of Mary will have two concerts this Summer. On Sunday,
July 30th at 7:30pm, Music Director, Jack Coen, will give a solo piano recital featuring works
by Mozart, Rachmaninov and Ravel. On August 17th at 7:30pm, Cantor, Laura Jaegar, will
perform a solo voice recital, accompanied by Jack Coen. Admission is free; donations are
encouraged and will benefit the music ministry.
Parents offer praise for HNM Montessori School: We have been very happy with HNMM. We appreciate the thoughtfulness with which HNMM has executed the Montessori method and we are deeply grateful for the Catholic atmosphere of the program. (Our son) has grown so much in the past year and he loves all of his school activities so much. He has shown a deeper love and reverence for God, as well as a greater interest in the liturgical aspects of Catholic worship through CGS, more than we thought that he was capable of!” We are currently registering children for the 2017/2018 school year. Please call if you would like to learn more: 914-271-5182.
