Its Blueberry Festival time once again.
Thursday, July 16th
from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
in the lot between the parking garage and Central Presbyterian
Church
Fresh Indiana blueberries, ice cream and baked goods will be availa-
ble. There will be live music and childrens activities.
(FYI the church parking lot will be closed at noon on July 15 to
prepare for the festival and will reopen on Friday, July 17.)
The 7th Cents Youth Group and Youth Design Team sends
thanks and best wishes to Tiffany Grossman as she completes her time as
youth director this month. Tiffany is making her family and nursing
school her primary focuses in life. The Design Team will soon be seeking
a new director, and current volunteers will be leading until one is hired.
Watch for information on a farewell gathering for Tiffany.

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One
is insight. Proverbs 9:10 (NRSV)
When I visit others homes, I always enjoy seeing the books they keep on the shelves. Its fun to see what interests them: sometimes the titles are very pre-
dictable, but often they surprise me: Wow, I had no idea they were interested in THAT! I also like talking with others about books and hearing their recommendations. So I thought I might
pass along a few titles that I have been reading (or that are on my read soon list) and that I
think you might enjoy.
Telushkin, Joseph. Jewish Literacy: the Most Important Things to Know about the Jewish Religion, Its
People, and Its History. New York: W. Morrow, 1991. My law school friend David Wohl-
berg sings the praises of his rabbi, who wrote this book and many others. So when I read
it, Ill learn more about the Jewish faith, as well as about the religious leader who has so
inspired my friend.
Emerson, Michael O., and Christian Smith. Divided by Faith: Evangelical Religion and the Problem of Race in America. New York: Oxford University Press, 2000. This was recommended by
local pastor Vince McFarland (Maryland Community Church) as a good beginning point
for an inter-racial pastors discussion group we hope to begin.
Rohr, Richard. Things Hidden: Scripture as Spirituality. Cincinnati, Ohio: St. Anthony Messenger
Press, 2008. My friend Morgan Roberts has recommended several books by this Catholic
monk and teacher. A Franciscan, he writes for a wide audience of religious and non-
religious persons. I cant accept all of his conclusions, but I deeply appreciate some of his insights. His suggestions about reading scripture with a generous spirit are, I think, espe-
cially instructive.
Blumhardt, Christoph. Everyone Belongs to God: Discovering the Hidden Christ. Charles E. Moore,
ed. Walden, New York: Plough Publishing House, 2015. Morgan Roberts recommended
this book, an edited collection of letters written in the early 1900s by a retired pastor to
his son-in-law, who had just become a missionary in China. This is one of the most chal-
lenging books I have read since Dietrich Bonhoeffers Cost of Discipleship. Blumhardt ad-vises his son-in-law not to worry about churchy things, but to start out by providing real, material help to those among whom he is ministering, trusting the Holy Spirit to lead
persons where they need to be.
Wright, N.T. Simply Good News: Why the Gospel Is News and What Makes It Good. San Francisco:
HarperOne, 2015. This is Wrights latest offering, and its one of my favorites. Without minimizing the insights of evangelical, revivalist Christians, he shows that the gospels claims are not just about going to heaven when you die, but rather about living life now as persons utterly convinced that God has won the victory and that evil is even now on
the run.
I hope you enjoy your summer reading!

Dear Central Presbyterian Church,
Thank you so much for your
kind hospitality and generosity here
in Tere Haute. That was hands
down the best meal weve had on the road!! We all enjoyed getting
to talk to many of you last night,
learning about this city and listen-
ing to the wonderful poem. You are a fundamental and vital part of
our journey we would not be able to make it across American without the love and generosity of
communities like yours.
Sincerely,
Bike and Build
Central US Team 2015
Dear Central Pres. Work Group,
Thanks so much for your volunteer work
on the grounds of Pyoca in April. Thanks to
your work and man other groups like yours,
our camp looks great for summer camp! I
hope to see you at Pyoca again soon!
Blessings,
Rev. Jake Hofmeister
Dear Pastor Davis,
Thank you so much for giving me the
chance to inform your congregation about
CASAs need for more advocates. Your con-
gregation was warm and welcoming to me,
making me feel a part of your church and less
a stranger. Your message Sunday was found
to be helpful because while we cant do it all,
we can do some. And that can make all the
difference in the eyes of our Lord.
Thank you for your kindness & for all that
you do .
Ally Jeffers, Vigo County CASA
